[RBW] Re: So Torn, Cannot Decide
Hey Peter, folks have shared a lot of great insight and experience on this thread. I'll just be redundant and say, call up the folks at Riv, talk to them and trust them. I own two Rivs, a Quickbeam I picked up used and a Hilsen I've had for 3 years. I used to have a Rambouillet but just didn't need it with the Hilsen and it was just a tad small. Given your stated plans for the bike I say go with an Atlantis. I purchased an LHT for touring earlier this year and just love it. LOVE IT! Can't say enough good things about it. Given my experiences with the various Rivs and my LHT, I say go for an Atlantis. I don't see how you could go wrong. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Erm that is North Korea. [RBW] Re: So Torn, Cannot Decide
Oh I have called Riv a few times just to pester them with a million questions and never had anyone ask me to buy something or made me feel like I was wasting thier time. They are all really awesome guys. The issue is that in the NYC area it is hard to find anyone who owns a Rivendell to give it a test ride let alone a dealer to get to up close and personal. I know Harris has some models but again that is a bit of a Trek (4 hours in the car) for me from Brooklyn and since I have been blissfully car free since 2004 I would have to bum a ride from somebody which I hate having to do. I just would hate buying something and then deciding its just not for me but realize I have to pull the trigger on something. I wish someone had a 52cm Sam for sale so I could see if it was indeed too small, at 84ish PBH I fall right in that middle ground of alot of riv bikes but have never had the chance to actually ride one to see on what side of the divide I fall. I might just wind up buying the 56cm Sam to see how it fits since it is the cheapest option and sell it this summer to pick up the Atlantis. Losing a couple hundred on the Sam will hurt less than losing over 500 on the Atlantis if I decide to sell. Again if anyone has a 52cm Sam to sell I would pick that up too, doesnt matter what color/brakes/etc. On Oct 6, 12:48 pm, John Bennett wrote: > Dear Joe, > > I figure you mean internal pressure, not from us. Quoth the Compass website, at least about handlebars: "All Grand Bois handlebars are *made in Japan by Nitto*." At some point a few years ago I remember seeing an online photo tour of one of Shimano's wheelbuilding plants (Malaysia, maybe?) and it seemed a fairly pleasant place; of course, it is only one among many, I'm sure. Folks, Before I list them on e-bay I have a Velo Orange Gran Cru 50.4 BCD crankset for sale. This is a high quality copy of the well known TA cyclotourist crankset that sells new, when available, for $200. This one has less than 100 miles on it and is in virtually new condition. (Bolt caps haven't been installed and I have box and packing.) This is set up as a 46/30 double. I'm looking for $175 shipped anywhere in the US except Alaska or Hawaii. Re: [RBW] Re: parts made in places where worker conditions are fairly reasonable
Good point, Jeremy. The notion that there are "good countries" (e.g., Republic of China) and "bad countries" (e.g., People's Republic of China) is rather simplistic. There are plenty of exploited workers in every country, including the US. Buying (or trying to buy) from specific manufacturers that observe good practices is a sounder strategy, IMO. I don't know if the folks at Riv personally visit every one of their suppliers, but it is clear they care about people, and not just profit, and that is one reason why I feel good about giving them my business. It's a difficult, constantly shifting and multi-variable equation. Stuff I've loved and use sits there gathering dust, mocking me in it's unsellability, while that pesky 20% quietly and almost unnoticeably accounts for the 80% of cash flow and sell-through. IME, Rivendell has always been able to work with their key suppliers of choice to get the right stuff if it isn't on their shelves, or tells you right up front that they can't so you can obtain it. A lot has to do with availability from their suppliers, as well, I'd reckon. My operating procedure is that if it's something I really want and don't see, I'll ask. [RBW] Re: So Torn, Cannot Decide
Here's another vote for "talk to the guys at Rivendell". There is zero pressure, and they ask a lot of questions about you & your riding, etc., in order to get you onto the best bike for you. This also makes you really think about what you want and what you're going to do with the bike. If anything, Rivendell staff errs on the side of caution in giving advice, and I can understand that. Most of us have wandered into a bike (or other retail) shop with only a vague idea of what we want, and within 5 minutes someone is telling us "this is what you need". It's refreshing to work with people who want to bring clarity to the process. And you get to deal with nice people too. dougP On Oct 6, 10:08 am, Peter M wrote: > Oh I have called Riv a few times just to pester them with a million > questions and never had anyone ask me to buy something or made me feel > like I was wasting thier time. Re: [RBW] Re: Stem length question - WTB shorter replacement - how short???
Jay: this is what you need: http://www.octagoncycles.com/ Goes well with argyle, I believe. Seriously, have you found a solution to your question? FWIW, raising my stem 2 cm made 1.5 cm longer reach bars feel much the same in the hooks and on the hoods as the shorter bars positioned lower. [RBW] Samuel P Taylor & Wet and wild Point Reyes Mini Trip. Ride Report and Photos
Hi Y'all, It was my Uncles 50th Birthday on Saturday so I took the opportunity to make a mini trip out of it and headed out on Saturday morning and caught the first Bart train to Embarcadero to start my Journey. The ride to Fairfax was beautiful and I arrived a bit early so I decided to ride out to Samuel P Taylor and doubled back to Fairfax for the Party. Woke up a bit hung over and headed back to Samuel P Taylor for some relaxation and to wait for a buddy to drive and meet me for the night. The weather was amazing and clear for the night, but Monday would be a different story. Started riding to the Point Reyes Ranger Station to check in for my campsite for the night and proceeded to Point Reyes Station for munchies at Bovine Bakery and to wait for the Rain to subside so I could push to camp. After eating to many Pastries and a few pieces of there amazing Pizza, I pressed on to Sky Camp. I decided to Hike up 3 1/2 miles up Horse Trail to Sky Camp and it was amazing even though I was getting rained on Hard all the way up. Half way up and being soaked head to toe, I was second guessing my decision to camp for the night. But I pressed on. Set up camp and decided to wait out the storm. I was in my tent from 8:00 Pm to 7:00 Am waiting out the storm, but the views in the morning of the fog rolling in was definitely worth the cold and wetness. It was absolutely beautiful. I was supposed to stay another night at Hawk Camp but that was put on hold since everything I had was soaked to the bone and I had to ride back in my flip flops, since my Sambas were filled with water in the morning. I will save that trip for when the weather is better. The medium saddle sack and my Barsack kept everything dry, with a little help from some Garbage Bags and Ponchos. A great trip, meet allot of fellow bikers along the way and will definitely do it again. Here are a few Pictures of the trip. http://www.flickr.com/photos/54527498@N06/sets/72157627832794810/ Cheers! [RBW] RBW and Apple
Once upon a time, I thought I saw a poll that was looking at Rivendell bike owners and Apple products, but I can't find it now. Anyone remember such? I was an old Apple ][ user, then when the IIGS dropped, I switched to PC's, and my work field is PC-based. However, iPods, iPhones, have brought me back around. Still don't own a Mac, but I'm no longer anti-Mac the way I was a decade or so ago. I was more a fan of Woz, but, I have to admit, Jobs has really had an influence on society. [RBW] Re: parts made in places where worker conditions are fairly reasonable
On Oct 5, 1:41 pm, Seth Vidal wrote: > How about the manufacturer of any of the Grand Bois non-tire parts? - Grand Bois tires are made by Panaracer in Japan. Their stems, handlebars and racks come from Nitto, also in Japan. - Grand Bois rims and cassette hubs are made in Taiwan. - Compass Bicycles' new cranks also will be made in Taiwan. Both countries have excellent labor standards. There are two reasons bike parts are made in foreign countries: Expertise and cost. Forging a bicycle crank requires specialized tooling to broach the square taper. I don't know of any North American forging house that has this tooling. Even TA has their cranks forged in Taiwan. Cost is a different issue. In the mainstream market, every penny counts, and labor-intensive production is moved to whomever offers the lowest bid. In Taiwan, this often means sub-sub-contracting to China. When our engineer visited all prospective companies in Taiwan who wanted to make our cranks, he found that many were little more than an office, who then would sub-contract the job to mainland China. Of course, the label still would say "Made in Taiwan." This type of outsourcing to the cheapest bidder not only has implications for labor standards, but also quality. It is not uncommon to substitute a cheaper alloy. As a result, you find chainrings that are labeled as 7075 aluminum, but wear so quickly that there is little doubt that they are 6000-series. That way, the company could underbid all the other companies who had to factor in the higher cost of the raw material... and they got the bid. When you work with reputable companies, you don't have to worry too much about these issues, but of course, the higher quality comes at a higher cost. *How can I know (or guess well) which I'd like better without buying 2 more stems? * ** Unfortunately, the answer is: You can't. The trick is either take a guess on one; or buy both, then sell one. The first option means you may not have to sell if it works. The second..you get to try both, then decide. I know that, as Jan Said, some places are labeling as Taiwan when they are outsourcing elsewhere. This is why I said some places in Taiwan. and this is also why I ask about where things are actually made, rather than taking it as it is sometimes assumed. My major concern is that I'm getting products from places where they do not undervalue the importance of their workforce. -sv -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Jan, thanks for the response. This is exactly why I asked. I take it you are confident that your manufacturers are playing fair on their outsourcing. I agree higher quality comes at a higher cost and I expect that. But I've also found you can get expensive goods which are, in fact, quite cheap. -sv ps: speaking of parts from reputable makers: any word on when the compass cranks are going to be available? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: parts made in places where worker conditions are fairly reasonable
I think that cost is the most sole driver to place of manufacture. There are many competent Broach houses in the US who could certainly do square taper cranks. I work with them on a regular basis making parts for Rocket Engines. And they would be willing to make the appropriate tooling if the business case were there. But based on US labor rates those Companies could never compete with the shops in Taiwan. We would be paying $1000 for a crankset. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] B-17 vs Flyer
Anyone out there used both? The recent blug entry suggests that there's less rail room for pushing the Flyer back than there is on the B-17. Can someone characterize the difference? 5mm? Over 1cm? An inch? I love my B-17 but am "Flyer-curious", shall we say, after having ridden a little on a friend's B-67 recently. I liked those springs. [RBW] B-17 vs Flyer
Well if I ever get out of Denver and back home I'll measure for you. Just put one on my Bombadil and didn't notice a difference. At 225lbs it can feel bouncy at times. Then again I've only got 100 miles on it.. I will know more after 50 ish mile ride Saturday. [RBW] Re: B-17 vs Flyer
This is a fuzzy memory from 5 years ago, but I would estimate the difference is about a centimeter. Grant is right about the springs: At 160lbs. back then (oh, glory days), the only difference between the two saddles was looks and weight. Those springs didn't even buzz for me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: B-17 vs Flyer
I found the leather on two different Flyer saddles to stretch and lose tension really quickly. And the springs were always annoyingly squeaky. Don't know about the rail lenghts.
