I think that cost is the sole driver to place of manufacture. There are many 
competent Broach houses in the US who could certainly do square taper 
cranks. I work with them on a regular basis making parts for Rocket 
Engines.  And they would be willing to make the appropriate tooling if the 
business case were there. But based on US labor rates those Companies could 
never compete with the shops in Taiwan. We would be paying $1000 for a 
crankset.
