No , it does not come treated with Boeshield or Frame Saver, as it's really

Re: [RBW] Interesting Incident on Today's Ride

2011-07-31 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Not too long ago I stopped and talked to a man near my neighborhood
who was walking north across NM to Colorado, from Texas and,
originally, from Florida, IIRC, pushing 200 lb of personal possessions
on a sort of custom-modified hand truck. I gave him the only money I
carry, a dollar or two I sometimes keep in my wallet for bus fare. Was
riding my Fargo, though, not one of the Rivs.

Re: [RBW] New Hunqapillar

2011-07-31 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Please keep us informed of your off road ride experiences. I am still
tempted by a Hunqapillar to build up as a ss off road bike, to
complement the Fargo, but I want something that feels lighter and
nimbler (the Fargo is lovely but it is heavy at 33 lb with the fat
wheelset).

I am rather put off by the extra diagonal, but that may be overweighed
by the trademark Rivendell ride quality, so I am particularly
interested in how the H feels in cornering and acceleration.

Or I may just get a ti or -- gawd 'elp us -- crabon fibre frame.

Why the so-high bars? Not criticizing, just curious. I find that I
need a certain torso angle and forward reach, otherwise I feel as if I
can't get any power. I'm 56 so I'm no spring chicken, either.

[RBW] Rivs on RAGBRAI

2011-07-31 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I'm sure there were more somewhere but I saw only one Riv on RAGBRAI and it
wasn't mine. It was a nice Ram being ridden well.

Up called out as he passed, mentioned my QB, got a knowing look and a wave
and he was gone into the distance.

I didn' t bring my QB because of the cost of travel from Hawaii and because
I wasn't up to 2+ feet of climbing of on a single speed, though some
seemed to be.

It most a great time, even if it was mostly brutally hot. Still I'm glad to
be on my way home.

Aloha!

[RBW] Re: New Hunqapillar

2011-07-31 Thread Geoff
Hi René,

Congrats on your new Hunqapillar! It looks great. Nice buildup, with some
nice upgrades from what would be a typical Riv 'standard' build kit. I got
my Hunq earlier this year, and Riv built it up for me pretty much standard,
but with Rich-built wheels, 150mm Bullmoose bars, and Paul Thumbies bar
mounts w/Ultegra 8spd bar end shifters. I was originally going to get the
200mm Bullmoose bars, but wanted the greater 'reachback' of the 150's. I'm
glad I went that route, as it allows me to have a more upright
position(comfort for my lower back). Like you, I love how the Bullmoose
bars feel in regards to wrist ergonomics...it feels very natural. Your Paul
Neo Retro/Canti brakes look great. I have the Tektro high profile cantis
and love them. I got the Schwalbe 700 x 50 Big Apples and really like them.
I test rode an Atlantis with the Schwalbe Supremes, and it did feel a bit
zippier than the Big Apples. But Riv guy Vince, who helped me with my test
rides and order, felt the zippier feeling was due more to the higher
pressure given the Supremes, than anything else. I definitely liked the
cushier feel of the BA's.

Here's my Hunq: My 2011
Hunqapillar (I
apologize to those who have already seen these pics.)

Re: [RBW] New Hunqapillar

2011-07-31 Thread erik jensen
patrick,

the hunqapillar can be light and nimble. the second top tube feels natural
to me anymore, and folks often comment on how light my bike is (and it's a
62). i notice the stiffness when i'm out of the saddle pulling on my
bullmoose hbars, relative to my atlantis in similar conditions. for a beefy
steel frame, it ain't bad.

what i like most is having a bike that handles like my other rivs, but is
set up for offroad riding. i'm using 29x2.1" knobbies and having a blast.
look at some of my photos, and you'll see that with 29" tires you end up
with not too long of a wheelbase--an inch or so of clearance between the
seatstay and the tire. if i get into a flow and let off my brakes on
descents, i can carve into corners just as easily as with my old karate
monkey--but the front end handles more like a road machine which is
something i appreciate--feels more responsive if a bit dulled with a
slightly longer wheelbase (hope that makes sense). i had to go to knobbies,
as big apples slid too much in the loose stuff at speed--i know you like
BAs, maybe that'll help you decide.

descending straighter lines, well, that's pretty damn magical--the riv
stability surprising translates well onto pretty gnarly downhill lines.

i'm using light weight components, but nothing crazy (still got steel hbars,
for instance). i love my bike, and feel like i'm riding the 29" equivalent
of an early mtb. it's a lot of fun.

i would love to help you with your ride plans jim, but am currently wrapping
up a journal article and tied to my desk till tomorrow night.

i do propose a ride, but i'd like to see it as an s24o up on mt. diablo.
maybe a ride up to juniper, and a large breakfast cooked the following
morning. it's the classic rbw territory, and the classic rbw activity.

let's plan one for september. anyone?

[RBW] Re: Rivs on RAGBRAI

2011-07-31 Thread Ken Yokanovich

I wore my Rivendell hat proudly, sported my Rivendell PA panniers, a basket,
Noodle bar, leather seat, lugged stem, but alas... did not ride any of my
Rivendells. I packed in a hurry on a Saturday afternoon and left on Sunday
morning. No time to fit my Atlantis with lights.

My plan included wrappin up the week with a gravel century in central Iowa
called the Guitar Ted Death Ride Invitational and this was the bike I wanted
to ride. This week of touring included many firsts for my, worthy of a full
write-up. The bike was great, proved to be amazingly versatile, fabulously
comfortable, and is a favorite on the gravel. It wasn't designed with the
purpose of touring, but managed okay, similar to the way that my custom
All-Rounder handles the load.. a bit "noodley." The Atlantis will most
certainly be the bike of choice for future touring adventures.

I don't have many photos, here's one of the bike loaded on my way north on
Friday evening to connect up for the Saturday morning gravel adventure.

Re: [RBW] New Hunqapillar

2011-07-31 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Erik: Thanks for the details. I am almost on the point of toppling
over on the Rivendell side of the fence. I'd probably ride a 54 -- the
smallest taking a 622 wheel and just my size anyway - and I see that
these do not have the extra tube. I'd use an upjutter stem to get the
drop bar flats about an inch above saddle center.

And, I notice that Riv states 55 as the largest tire, but I know
somone onlist spoke of using 60 mm Big Apples; measuring from inside
to inside of fork legs and stays at the 29" mark, what is the width? I
need room for at least 65 mm tires -- the width of 2.35 BAs on the 45
mm SnoCat SL rims.I can forgo fenders since this will be a -- believe
it or not -- gofast type of offroad bike; ie used for offroad riding
when I want to carry as little weight as possible. I have the Fargo
for everything else.

I would probably have the SnoCat SL rims rebuilt with an ENO rear and
a nice, sealed front and mount the 60 mm Exiwolfs that came stock on
the Monocog 29er I sold. I'd probaby use V brakes with the appropriate
drop levers something like Salsa Bell Laps or even perhaps 44 mm Nitto
185s. Oh, dream on, dream on. We'll see.

First, you need to know how much we suffer here in the SFBay with
crowding in the Jim-namespace. I believe Jim M. holds title to being
the
as-the-crow-flies-nearest-to-RBW Riv rider, whle I am merely lucky to
have a neighbor with such fine tastes (myself lurking on-list as I
consider RBW to be my LBS).

It was good to meet Gernot and I am sorry I missed you @RBW, Esteban.
The pictures you've all seen do not lie- mere minutes from RBW exist a
chain of State and regional parks where Hunqas roam and vultures soar.
Just yesterday, I enjoyed some good dirt I'd not been on previously,
in the southern portions of Shell Ridge- down around the old Joaquin
and Franco places. If you're ever visiting the area I am happy to roll
or to at least provide. I think it is high time for an s24o.

[RBW] Re: Headset Issue

2011-07-31 Thread Darin G.
So, gave the Sam a few rides after adjusting the headset and it
started indexing again, primarily in the dead-ahead position, and
resumed scaring the hell out of me twisty curves. So I decided to
just replace the headset. Had the shop that built the bike install an
IRD Interloc as opposed to the bearing swap discussed above. I
ultimately decided this wasn't something I wanted to do again anytime
soon and given that a considerable portion of the cost is labor which
I don't feel presently competent to do myself I just went ahead and
replaced it. Frankly, I'd have sprung for the Chris King if one had
been available for immediate install. I now appreciate that bikes are
subject to considerable stress in the headset and for me the peace of
mind factor is worth the upgrade.

Examination of the old headset indeed revealed signs of brinelling. I
was surprised that such a small defect in the surface of the race
could have such a pronounced effect on handling. Thank you Mark and
Steve at Saturday Cycles in Salt Lake City for getting it done so I
can take my Sam to Durango this week!

experience has been that the P-50's gave better coverage and fender line

Got my bike a few months ago, now wondering where I can go, and if any RBWHQ
locals here have some recommendations.

I'm currently running around on the canal MUP and the Ironhorse Trail, but
that's just about all I know. I live just a couple miles from RBWHQ, but
I'm a veritable newbie to this bike riding thing. Taking the road when
there's no bike lane feels really unnatural, so I'm kind of hesitant to just
pedal out there on some random street. I'm on an A.H.H., so my off-road
capabilities are limited. Not adverse to sticking my bike on a car rack and
heading out somewhere though.

If you've got any tips, thanks in advance (sometimes I can't seem to post a
reply).

Now that I think about it, I probably should use it as an excuse to buzz by
RBW and ask, but that will have to wait for another weekend.

If you see a black metallic A.H.H. with a perma-on dyno headlamp, maroon
bartape, carrying a slightly confused, strangely dressed rider, it's me. :)

[RBW] Re: New Hunqapillar

2011-07-31 Thread brian tester
I have been riding my 54cm Hunq about 30% of the time off road. It's
currently shod with 700x50 Duremes (which are pretty decent off road,
btw, at the correct psi.)

Hunq does make a great off roader. Cornering is pretty tight due to
the low bb, though you need to be aware of your pedals. I think it
climbs great as well, though YMMV according to your technique.
Not noodly, yet still comfy. I'm learning how nice 29er's can handle
climbing and trail-cruising in the dirt.

If you aren't planning on catching a lot of air, or doing dual-slalom
or all-mountain type riding, I can't see how the Hunqapillar wouldn't
suit your off-road needs. The ride is not a million miles away from
the mb-1s and mb-3 I used to ride.

Re: [RBW] New Hunqapillar

2011-07-31 Thread Brian Hanson
I'm actually surprised how good the Big Apples are in the dirt. I'm in
Whistler, BC this weekend, and took my old MTB up some blue trail single
track with mud, rocks, roots, and even a few twisting bridge ramps, and only
had one slight front wheel slip in in a gravelly switchback. They were
solid and I stayed quite a ways out front of my knobby shod friend on the
ascents and descents.

[RBW] Re: Visit and ride at RBW

2011-07-31 Thread Earl Grey
Been meaning to post, but have been caught up in a friend's wedding
proceedings. I had a fabulous ride thanks to Jim and Joe, and a great
time at WHQ as well. Loved the Hunq. Feels like my Sam with even
fatter tires. Wore my RBW visor for the first time (Grant was wearing
his to work as well) and really appreciated the cooling breeze in my
hair on the Diablo climbs. The visor is an awesome design, and
decidedly not selling like hotcakes according to Grant. So throw one
in your shopping cart next time, they are only $13, and like many
other Riv products, a bit unconventional, but once you use them, you
wonder how you got along without one.

Saw the new green Sams and a new green Hunq, and while I think the
Sam's orange is about the prettiest bike color ever, the new green may
be the second prettiest. The photos on the riv site don't do it
justice. It's less Kelly and more creamy than it appears on my
(calibrated) monitor at least.

Re: [RBW] t-9

2011-07-31 Thread René Sterental
Since I've picked up all of my frames in person at RBW, I've always asked
them to do it. For the Hunqapillar, since Mark is on vacation, it was Jay
who installed the headset, BB and cranks and prepped the frame, and he asked
me if I wanted him to add the T-9 even before I asked. His concern was that
it might drip while in my car, but I told him to go ahead since I always
carry the frame home inside its plastic bag just in case. So he did.

I don't know if they do it for all the frames/bikes they ship.
