Re: [RBW] Re: Swift Industries Panniers
Thanks, Harry, and all who have responded -- I pulled the trigger on a pair of the Swift Mini Stack Panniers last night in waxed canvas. Looking forward to using them. What I like about them vs. the V-Brand set sold by RBW (Riv-content for the thread) is that they are not joined together as one unit. I can use one or both, depending on the load. I also like the Swift use of an interior "neck" with two draw cords (similar in design to the Acorn bags). That will keep the contents dry AND/or dust free when over stuffed. I also really like the accessible exterior pocket on the side and in the lid. The bag is just the right size for my typical commuter loads. Lastly, the company is cottage sized, the bags MUSA all the way, and other list members like them. All good enough for me! Oh, and I also dropped an order yesterday to RBW for a couple of more V-Brand bags (I really like the V-Brand stuff a lot) and another pair of MUSA pants (also among my fav's). Life is good on two wheels. Oh, and GO GIANTS!!! [RBW] Tire clearance question: 44mm tires in 50mm stay?
Would you put a tire that measures up at 44-46mm in a 50mm (2") chainstay? This leaves approx. 3mm clearance a side. Is this too close? My bike mechanic thinks so. I'm thinking of putting Big Apples on my old MB-6 and the Apples measure up at 44mm according to the Riv site. Would love to try the fat, cushy tires somehow. [RBW] Re: Tire clearance question: 44mm tires in 50mm stay?
The 44.45mm that Riv shows is for that specific rim. Also, we don't know the if that measurement is new, or a well broken in tire, as they they do get wider as opposed to brand new. 3mm each side is really close. I've seen some do it of course. Make sure you have really well built wheels that stay true and don't break spokes! Too bad there isn't much between 50's and 42'sin tries. I'm using some Kenda Kwick Roller EZ 700x45 tires that measure 43mm on A719 rim, and they are fantastic. Nashbar sold them, but I think they are out of the 45's. Someone may have some though. They are as good as a Marathon Supreme, at fraction of the cost. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Bomb(s)
No need to apologize Bobby.. you're just being honest. I prefer the Bombadil the way it is too. I didn't buy it for it's looks. I'm surely in the minority here in not caring about all the pretty stuff on Riv bikes. The ride is what matters to me. The water bottle setup with the diagonal tube will be odd to me. The frame doesn't need to be any stiffer. It adds more unnecessary weight to and already perfect frame. The frame can be as super heavy duty as you want .. but the limiting factor on the road will always be the wheels. Are we to use 48 spoke wheels to compliment the stout-er frame? Lol:) It's just seems like they've chosen their idea of aesthetics over real world function to me. It's not the end of the world or anything ..but hey, it's their frames, and they can do anything they want. We either buy them or we don't. I'd like another Bombadil. one for the road, and one dedicated off road. I'll take the new paint scheme with the current frame. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: worlds collide
Steve, your assertion (sadly accurate as it may be) that "everybody's moving to 10 speed or higher" only strengthens my resolve to never give in to this madness, and not only will they be prying my dead fingers off my 7-speed freewheel when they bury me, I'd like my tombstone to read "MY 10-speed is a 2x5"... I have to laugh at myself, because my 29er mountain bike has a carbon 9-speed derailleur, hydraulic brakes and tubeless rims (although it IS steel with a steel fork, thank you), so therefore I don't qualify as a true "luddite"... But when it comes to derailleured drivetrains, the move to 10-speed and beyond will only create weaker components and lessen index shifting tolerances. This is simply moving us in the wrong direction... It's NOT going to make the riding experience better... I'm all for gearing choices, but not at the expense of making a weaker drivetrain. Gee, I was in such a good mood... the mere mention of 10 speed cassettes always brings me down... I need a good ride on my thick-chained 5 speed... [RBW] Re: worlds collide
The industry will say anything to promote their goods. They'll say hey , we gotta cut costs, so we're just going to make 10 speed stuff only. Code for ... we can make more money. They are not hurting making 7, 9 or 9 speed stuff. The hard thing may be getting hubs. The aftermarket will have to step up to offer 8/9 sp. bodies. I'm sure Phil Wood will keep them around. I don't think SRAM or anyone else is going to stop making 8 speed chains anytime remotely soon. I'm still lamenting SRAM for buying Sachs and closing the FW factory. Those FW's are great. I have yet to even come close to wearing one out. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
