[RBW] Funny ride story - Sunday
Hi all: Here, at least I think, is a pretty funny story. I was riding in Sparkill, NY today going up a short but steep hill on my Rambouillet set up in credit card touring mode. A guy on a Trek Madone pulls along side me, and with a hint of condensation says, "Wow, nice bell on that bike", referring to the bell that Rivendell sells. I ring it for him and tell him I agree. I do not know what got into memaybe hypoxia from climbing the hill, I then tell him the bike has a nice horn too and proceed to break wind. A long loud one. At this point, we both start laughing so hard that neither of us can pedal up the incline and both get off to push the bikes up the incline laughing non-stop. We both promised to try to meet up to go on a ride at some point. Goes to show youcan't judge a book by its cover. Even the weather crew on WGN here in Chicago has been talking about this event building in the Pacific lately. They're a more detail oriented group of forecasters who use multiple models to predict weather patterns. I hope this is not too devastating - floods, heavy snow, mud slides, etc. for the NorCal region, but as you say, it looks ominous. Shimano makes a couple of 'em, so not sure which one you are referring to. Re: [RBW] Pedal: One Side Clip-Free, Other Clip-In
I concur. The A530 are the best you can find. It's what I rode until I decided to go completely flat and bought Grip Kings for the Homer and Bombadil to give them a good try. If you want to buy a new set, check them out at Wiggle (wiggle.co.uk). Their price in US$ is quite a bit lower than the US price and if you add other stuff you might also need, they'll ship to the USA for free. I think their minimum for free shipping is $80 or so... Fenders on, Dustin! I'll do the same with any un-fendered bike in my house and our combined efforts might turn this storm back to Hawaii! Batten down the hatches. Mudslides, floods, and other calamities that are par for the course in California (not to mention economic disaster) are always in the next chapter. [RBW] Re: Pedal: One Side Clip-Free, Other Clip-In
A few years back when I was still riding with clip-less SPD shoes I used to use these pedals. I had both the Shimano as well as several pairs of the "cloned" Performance (Forte) brand. The Shimano was much superior in both smoothness and clip operation. If you want to try some of these out to see how you like 'em you're welcome to a pair of the Performance pedals at no cost. Just drop me an email and let me know where to ship 'em. If you decide you like them and you want to use them, fine; if you decide you'd rather upgrade to the Shimano after trying them out, keep 'em anyway or give 'em to someone else, as you like. [RBW] Re: Will riding a Rivendell make me self-conscious or overly worrisome?
I rode an Atlantis everywhere (work, touring, group rides) for 8 years until I was in a collision with a motor vehicle and the frame was damaged :<. I always felt the bike was very low-key in appearance and I feel the Sam Hillborne and Betty Foy are too. I would get positive comments from bicyclists who "knew" it was a Rivendell; it never made me feel uncomfortable. Usually they wanted to look at the bike and ask me a few questions about it. Once on a group bicycle tour in the White Mountains of Arizona it started to rain and most of the cyclists who didn't have fenders, rain gear, etc., stopped at a local store to wait for the sag to pick them up. I had my rain gear with me in my saddlebag and I had fenders so I just donned my rain gear and continued the ride. My husband told me later that one of the other cyclists said "That girl on the Atlantis looks like she can ride through anything". On another occasion on a group bike tour, a fast cyclist on a very flashy road bike passed me on a hill and said "What a dinosaur!" If I had ever caught up to him, I would have asked "Do you mean me or the bicycle?" I had some of the best rides of my life on that bike and I felt it was worth every penny (and then some) that I paid for it. I now am riding a Rivendell Glorius, which is a stunning bike, yet I feel many people think it is just an old bike and don't give it any attention. That is fine with me. I hope to get another Rivendell frame in the near future, perhaps a Hillborne. Thanks for the update. We've been watching this one but didn't have quite the information you provided. The Alpine Fire department in east san diego has been handing out sandbags all week and warning of a big one. So today was a very long ride on 60+ degree dry roads, stacked dry wood close in, cleaned the rain gutters and then pulled out the rollers. Now it looks like I need more wood in. [RBW] Feeling self-conscious riding a rivendell
I agree w. Ron Lau about not riding a bike I didn't like. And in the scale of things, losing a bike, no matter how well-loved is relatively trivial. But I'm actually kind of excited about reviving the PX-10.With moustache bars , it'll make a nice single-speed. Sort of a nice new- old bike. Most of the parts we already had, and for a couple of hundred dollars, it'll be on the road again, ratty enamel paint and all. Doesn't matter; it's still a good bike.and in 1973 , I bought my 1st PX-10, loved it, lost it, bought another which I kept 10 years until it was stolen, then bought this one. On the other hand, I don't like to expose something I've spent a few thousand dollars on to unnecessary risk. My X0-1, my 1997 all- rounder and my 2001 Curt-built road have too much invested in them financially and emotionally. And they're kind of hard to replace. That's just my take and YMMV. As soon as I'm able to retire, locking them up at work won''t be a problem any more:) But that's a few years down the road. On a less controversial subject; to the person who posted the link to the Reader, thanks. I know we all wish they came out more often, but it's nice to see it's there. It reduces friction, lets you run shorter cables, and cuts down on head tube rub. Sheldon Brown's description is below. Jay Hartman "Criss-Cross" Cables Most bicycles with handlebar-mounted shifters run the rear cable on the right, the front on the left. This causes some awkwardness in routing the length of housing from the shift lever to the frame stops. Due to the need to allow these housings to be long enough to permit the bars to be turned all the way back and forth, the housings often wind up making a reverse bend--for instance, the rear will go from the shifter, which is on the right, swing forward and cross over past the centerline of the bicycle, then back over to the right side of the top tube, before heading down the down tube. These extra bends increase friction, and the fairly forcible contact between the housing and the side of the top tube can damage the finish. A neat solution to this is to run the cables "criss-cross" style: The rear runs from the lever, (on the right) around the top tube, and to the cable stop on the *left* side of the down tube! The front cable crosses over similarly from the left side of the handlebar to the right side of the down tube. The bare cables then cross one another under the middle of the down tube, making an "X". The cables may touch where they cross, but they will do so very lightly, since they are both straight...the tiny bit of friction at this crossing is more than offset by the reduction in friction in the smoother-flowing cable housings. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. This means my SPD Shimano sized 45 (more like a 44) have been gathering dust in the basement for at least past five years. Anybody interested? Still in very good condition. These things are quite sturdy and should last forever. I believe these were marketed as Mountain Bike shoes though I'd argue they belong in the dork collection! [RBW] why no need to feel self-conscious on a rivendell
Related to "self-conscious" comments Last weekend I was up on the mountain at the halfway up hangout spot where most people (me too) usually sit and talk. I had my 58650B AHH with bags front and rear, and my friend had his Bleriot. There were four or five other riders there on normal bikes, and one guy said to us, "You made it up here on those?" It was a compliment to our toughness. Then he said to his friend, "THose bikes are hard to ride. They're steel, you know. THey're HEAVY. I have a bike like that. I love that bike--it's an old Nishiki. I keep it in the shed." I never know how to respond to that, but I said, something like, "You know, they aren't that much different, and once you put a rider on the bike, the actual frame weight difference becomes unimportant, and we're going to ride down on trails, so that's why we have thicker tires..." But there's just such a huge misunderstanding about stuff. The point is, the bikes may look fancy to you, or to us, or something, but to most people, they look like the bikes they don't ride anymore, or the bikes they had as a kid or something. A Glorius, maybe not so much, but any of the others just look like skinny-tubed obsolete technology. I bet at least twenty riders on this list have been told, "I had a bike like that one when I was a kid..." No need to feel self-conscious!
