559 tubes are no problem.

As a reference, I once found myself way out of town on my 700C-shod cross
bike, and realized upon pinch-flatting that I had swapped gear in my pack
for an earlier ride, leaving my patch kit and 700C tubes at home while
bringing 26" x 2.2 tubes along. They worked (though I was pretty careful
to seat the tires carefully) for about 5 miles of trail and 15 of road to
get home.

I've got a new wild hair - I've been thinking of polishing off the
logos on my derailleur and brake levers. They say "Shimano 105" or
just "Shimano", and I was thinking that a plain silver look would
compliment my Rambouillet a bit better.

I know, you can't see the logos from more than a few feet away, but
winter is here, and why not?

Does anyone have any experience in doing this? Does it work? What
polishing compound and/or tools did you successfully use?

I've used 559X2" tubes in 29er tires; the biggest problem was getting the
little tubes over the big 622 rims. (I've also used 559X1" tubes in regular

[RBW] threaded headsets

2008-12-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery

This was briefly mentioned before, but I thought I'd put it up here
again. I just noticed that QBP again lists all Shimano headsets as
"discontinued". Rivendell doesn't list any on their web page. I was
unable to find any headsets of any kind on the Shimano web page. I've
called several major wholesalers, and they don't have any either.
There are some other brands of threaded headsets still available
(Ritchey, Tange, Chris King, and a couple others), but they tend to be
either super cheap or super expensive. The Shimano models had a lot of
quality for a reasonable price, and it's sad to see them go away, as
it seems they have.

Anyway, for those of us who are in favor of threaded headsets, and the
Shimano models in particular, now may be the time to obtain a lifetime
supply.

The problem comes when the tube is a bit on the large side. I found
the Specialized 559 x 1.5-1.75 tube to be rather on the fat side for a
650B Col de la Vie tire. Mounting the tire without pinching part of
the tube under the bead was difficult because there was just so much
of the tube. The next size down, Specialized 559 x 1.25-1.5, was just
right.

I have one of those black ones. Probably will buy some roller bear

pretty good selection of threaded headsets from Tange and itself. It
has a wholesale business now and Box Dog Cycles, for example, sells
stuff from VO.

[RBW] Oh, oh, oh!! Monumentally, heroically, collossally big tires!!!

2008-12-15 Thread PATRICK MOORE
The UPSman just dropped off a Rivordered pair of Schwalbe 622X60 Big Apples.
I've used the 559 60s and liked them very much, but those were puny,
pissant, starveling things compared to these! Lightweight be damned! A full
2 1/4 lb, 1000+ grammes, each, of strutting, macho, shove-thy-neighbor burly
weight! I can't wait to mount and ride them (but I must control my haste,
must get back to work).

Advice sought: it's snowing lightly and I prolly should keep the Exiwolfs
installed for the moment, but how do y'all find big, FAT road tires in light
snow, at low pressure?

[RBW] Re: threaded headsets

With all due respect to Velo-Orange, your LBS probably has, or can
easily order Tange headsets from any wholesaler. If you don't have a
LBS or don't like your LBS, that's another matter.

He mentioned Tange, too. But, yes, the Grand Cru is a V-O specific
item. I don't mean to say anything resembling "don't shop at V-O". I
admire V-O's operation and envy his marketing and product savvy, which
I fully intend as a compliment. Just that I often notice that folks
will order some small part from across the country (including from me)
when the part in question is readily available from more local
sources.

What's light snow where you are? As long as there is no danger of ice
underneath the snow, I prefer a relatively skinnier tire that will
"cut" the snow down to the pavement. I feel comfortable/confident in
about 1-3 inches on 25s. I tried some Hetres in the snow and wasn't
thrilled with them. A bit too loosey-goosey. Anything over 4 inches,
I roll with studs because the sloppy, icy stuff usually comes with
that kind of accumulation.

[RBW] Re: threaded headsets

2008-12-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery

Back when all headsets had ball bearings, the A9 was revolutionary by
having needle bearings. This feature prevented these headsets from
developing the notchiness that sometimes plagues headsets with ball
bearings. It was also pretty lightweight, being made of alloy and
plastic when steel headsets were more common. In my opinion, it's a
good headset, but not as good as many of the new sealed-bearing units,
like those formerly made by Shimano.

I'd advise any A9 owner to have some spare parts on-hand. Some of the
little tapered rings and bearing retainers can crack if they get
dropped on the floor, or perhaps in a crash.

Yes, they live a long time. I have one that's been in service at least 15
years & still works fine.

What piqued my interest was a recent discussion about them getting hard to
find, & I want to pick up a couple for other bikes I have. They're a good
value & nice looking to boot.

[RBW] Re: Converting horse panniers to bike panniers

2008-12-15 Thread Doug Peterson

At $26 to $50 they look like a bargain. Didn't notice if that was for each
bag or "one horses worth" but even per bag it ain't bad. You could invest
in a lot of customizing at that price.

For cycling, my question would be the weight. Since the horse folks are
dealing with about 10X as much power as most of us, weight's probably not a
big concern. I'd also guess that they'd lean toward extra-heavy-duty
materials & construction since the trail riding world is pretty rough with
brush, rocks, etc.

Let us know what you learn. Maybe another option for the frugal cyclist.

Have not used Ortlieb but the Nitto big rear rack handles most panniers.
The little post as well as the small loop at the bottom are just convenient
mounts. I've lashed all sorts of junk onto my Nitto & having multiple
places & ways to strap stuff is handy.

Agree that the rear tab leaves a tail light pretty vulnerable. I've broken
a couple & don't use it any more. The platform is long, which is handy, but
you have to be careful which is sometimes hard to do when you're wrestling
the bike up stairs, etc.

[RBW] Re: Converting horse panniers to bike panniers

2008-12-15 Thread Angus

My wife and daughters ride horses. Best I can tell, there is NO
consideration given to weight with horse equipment. Over the weekend
I have to help my wife carry her saddle to the barn. I knew my B-17
wasn't light, but I don't have any issue picking it up!!!

I had the same feeling although I did speak to the seller on the phone
and walked away with the feeling that the guy was on the level. He
sounded genuinely bummed that he under priced the frame. I didn't ask
him the details on how he could underprice a frame that much but
didn't get the feeling he was getting rid of a stolen or damaged frame
which I thought might be the case before I called. Who knows.

[RBW] Salt Water on a Steel Riv

2008-12-15 Thread Ray

So, I got caught by the super high tide Saturday on my way home from a
Marin County ride. The path across the Mill Valley salt marsh was
flooded with about 4 inches of bay water at extreme, full moon driven
high tide. I rode through it as slow as possible, but still got the
lower half of my canti-Rom covered with salt water. Nearly as soon as
I got by the marsh, the skies opened up with a real drencher, and I
rode the rest of the way home in a medium rain sprinkled with
intermittent hail. Great day for a ride!

Anyway, I washed the bike with soap and water, rinsed it well, and re-
oiled the chain and moving pieces. I have heard that I would also be
wise to drop place a drop of oil on each spoke nipple. Does anyone
think that's something I should do? Any other comments, suggestions?

thanks, all.

Is it Framesaver'd on the inside? I would probably pull the seatpost
and BB and flush out the lower part of the frame, just to be sure
there isn't any salt in there.

My guess that they have no internal stiffening, so you'd have to
improvise some sort of interior structure to keep them from flopping
into the wheel.

I'm wildly allergic to horses, so all of my steeds are made of steel!

[RBW] Re: Salt Water on a Steel Riv

2008-12-15 Thread Doug Peterson

Salt water is one of the most corrosive things in nature. I've seen "beach
bikes" that people casually ride along the sand at low tide (thinking "it's
dry, it's OK"), then park outside the house at the beach. EVERYTHING
corrodes - steel, aluminum, SS. Even plastics don't look so good.

It's a lot of work but it's also a nice bike - tear it down, flush & spray
everything with Boeshield, WD-40, something to displace the water & protect
the metal, internally & externally. Keep a close eye on things for the next
several weeks & get right on top of any corrosion you see on the alloy parts
especially but anywhere else also.

Sorry to sound like an alarmist on this but...been there, not fun at all.

The few times I've gotten mixed up with saltwater, the chain was showing
corrosion within 24 hours.

Bay water is more brackish than pure salt, but I'd probably pull the bb and
take a look. If something got in, you'll probably see a little corrosion.
It's also possible to have a little light corrosion inside the frame just
from the bay air and over-the-bridge humidity.

You might spray something in through the venting holes at the rear dropouts.
That would be the other spot of water access. If you weren't fendered, I'd
probably drop the fork and clean the steerer tube, race, inside the headtube
and headset.

Hope that helps,

- Jim
