Back when all headsets had ball bearings, the A9 was revolutionary by having needle bearings. This feature prevented these headsets from developing the notchiness that sometimes plagues headsets with ball bearings. It was also pretty lightweight, being made of alloy and plastic when steel headsets were more common. In my opinion, it's a good headset, but not as good as many of the new sealed-bearing units, like those formerly made by Shimano.
I'd advise any A9 owner to have some spare parts on-hand. Some of the little tapered rings and bearing retainers can crack if they get dropped on the floor, or perhaps in a crash.
