Hmm, seems a bit long. How about Devel::Function? No, that sounds
like something to help you develop functions.

Devel::ThisFunction? Maybe... but that's even longer than
Devel::FunctionID. Closer to the actual usage, though.

Devel::Self? ...no, that sounds like a program that writes itself.

Devel::This? Hm. That could work. That also opens the door for
future functionality. Like say $this_package or something. (Yes, I
know about __PACKAGE__, but that doesn't interpolate into strings...
). Or something else that someone else might suggest someday.

What do you think of Devel::This?

Thanks in advance. (and thanks for your comments, folks!)

I am a bit sceptical to Devel::This because for a lot of OO people,

Actually, this is not database specific. I've been using it on Postgres

The only reason AURIJUS wanted it called DBIx::Informix::Perform was that
"PERFORM" was a trademark of Informix and he wanted to be clear of trademark

Putting Informix in the name will mean most non-Informix users
will ignore the module.

I didn't see that discussion (sadly have have little time to read
[EMAIL PROTECTED] these days).

I believe there is no need to "clarify" trademark issues in module
names. (In the same way that domain names that include a tradename
don't have to include the owner of the trademark.) All that's
needed is for the module *documentation* to clarify this (README + pod).

Indeed. To quote my original mail:

Some googling revealed that the Informix technology is trademarked and
often spelt as PERFORM, as 'Perform' is usually associated with a common
verb.

I now see that it is ambiguous -- I meant
({trademarked-as + often-spelt-as} PERFORM)
instead of
(trademarked) and (often spelt-as PERFORM)

Pardon my suboptimal English. :(

The original intent is to advice against using the common verb 'Perform',
and instead either capitalize it (as an abbreviation or proper name), or
qualify it somehow, by prefixing it with ::Informix.

It is true that DBIx::Informix will look like DBD::Informix-specific.
However I cannot easily think of a better name.

Thanks,
/Autrijus/

I mistakenly looked at DBIx::OracleSequence and DBIx::MSSQLReporter in
the module list and thought that it's okay for DBIx::Informix::Perform
to go in; now I see that, following the same naming convention, maybe it
should be called DBIx::InformixPerform or something else.

  rationale:

Function optimizing is one of the basic computer usages.
Unfortunately, there is only one single module available on CPAN for
that task, the Math::Simplex. The Math::ES module provides another
tool for non-linear ("genetic") optimization procedures, as e.g. in
parameterization.

Almost everybody knows GAs, genetic algorithms, but Evolution
Strategies (ES) are rather unknown, although they have been
developped simulataneously. So this modules follows two intentions:
provide users with another optimizer tool and make the idea of ES
more public.

The module is in oo-style; it allows multiple populations with
migration and mixing, elitism, cross over, mutation, two selection
schemes and self adapting step widths.

So much for the uniqueness ...

Perhaps something else without 'informix' in it - see my email about
trademarks.

No problem.

Don't forget that some modules in the list pre-date newer
namespaces or were in widespread use before getting listed.

So take the module list itself only as a imperfect guide :)

These days DBIx::OracleSequence would probably be Oracle::Sequence.

I'd like to avoid more database-specific modules going into DBIx::*
as that's really meant for database *I*ndependant extensions to the DBI.
But I can't complain too loudly as I haven't been around to beat
that drum much.

Tim.

p.s. My thanks to all who look after [EMAIL PROTECTED] these days.

If it is relatively unknown, then the user probably can't figure out
what ES means. Maybe Math::EvolutionStrategy or Math::Evolution?

So, what's the official word from the modules-keepers? ::Informix:: or not?

I still have the cvs checkout from before the ::Informix:: change
(being a little behind on that sort of thing) and can go back to that. If
not, I'll check in the change at Sourceforge.

The official word is: keep the DBIx::Informix::Perform namespace
with our blessing, and please accept my personal apology for letting
you be troubled with the post-hasty-decision discussions.

Note that at no point during the discussion do Tim nor I suggest
the approved namespace to be changed -- we're merely discussing
how similar requests to be handled in the future.

  rationale:

I've developed several complex applications. Some parts are
configurable via configuration file. The parameters can also be
defined by a script. In the application core I set the default
configuration values. I need to merge this three sources of
configuration to get the final configuration set before used in
other parts of the application. I've used this mechanism internall.
Now, it's just the time to release it to the public in hope that it
can be useful to others.

I've changed the name from something internal to Config::Merge, and
I think this is an appopriate name. There's already a namesapce
"Config::" for configuration parser. So Merge will fit just well. I
believe this is the first module in CPAN for this purpose.

I'm internally testing this module before releasing the first
version (0.0.1, alpha stage). In the meantime, this is an excerpt
from ABSTRACT:

Config::Merge merges configuration from at most three sources. Your
application may allow users to define configuration in a file, but
you also have set predefined (default) configuration. At the end you
want single configuration by merging them with a certain precedence.
This module will do just that.

Additionally, Config::Merge provides internal parser for convenient
and historical reason, but allows users to provide external parser
via CODE reference to suit their need.

  rationale:

As this modules requires the Win32::API module and via these uses
the msi.dll-functions, it is currently applicable only to windows.
(side note: who would use msi on unix?)

I plan to write some other modules below Win32::MSI - eg. a
Win32::MSI::Tools module, which should be able to compare msi

some Tk-Classes for displaying data from msi-databases.

Win32::MSI will define the core functions for accessing data.
