That is similar to my recent problem — reported via “Help>Send
Feedback…”
Lots of crashes while my internet connection was dog slow, and then
MailMate was able to get through its startup ok when the internet
connection improved.
There was an account “unavailable” with a message stuck in its
“Sent” mailbox that seemed to be featured in the crash logs
according to Benny

So… was there a connection problem during the MM startup?

[MlMt] latest version/update crashes during load..help?

2020-09-30 Thread Jim Cook

Same problem here.
Seemed to start when I upgraded to MacOS 10.15.7 last night though may
be a coincidence.

Seems to be related to connecting to a particular IMAP source.
Not related to version of Mailmate as I tried reverting to latest pubic
build (r5673) and no difference.

This email written on r5722 after the fix below.

My fix:

Disconnect from internet by turning WiFi off
Start Mailmate - it doesn’t crash.
Set all sources to offline
Turn on WiFi
Go through sources one by one to set online.

I found one source that was causing the crash (not a Google or Microsoft
email server) hosted at `genotec.ch`, sorry I don’t know what software
the server is running (or if that’s relevant).

Hope that helps,

Regards

Jim

[MlMt] Keybindings for non-US keyboards

2020-09-30 Thread Charlie Clark

Hi,

I usually use a German keymapping which means that certain common
application keyboard shortcuts such as anything involving square or
curly brackets are a challenge as I have to remember these. I'm sure
I'm not alone in this, so my question is: how do others manage with the
commands like next mail view or changing the indentation level?

Increase indentation cmd + [ becomes be alt + cmd + 6 on my keyboard
And I've no idea how to get alt + cmd + [ because I'd need alt twice!

While this was happening did you just happen to notice in what state
your internet connection might have been?

If your internet connection was normal at that time then I doubt my
problem is/was treated to yours, otherwise it might be a clue to an
underlying issue.

Then it sounds like it could be a bug. Use “Help ▸ Send Feedback” to send me

Then I'll see if I can reproduce similar behavior.

I seem to be able to trigger these when viewing emails containing images. I'm
guessing it's the WKWebView (the primary Apple GUI element used to display
emails) which uses the GPU for some data processing.

I'm not seeing the 100% behavior, but maybe that's related to the specific
emails you are displaying.

When I reduce the number of “about:” processes running then I believe it should
also decrease the number of MTLCompilerServices (and the amount of memory used).

Ok, that would be tricky since it would require MailMate to reconnect to all
mailboxes with deleted messages on exit. It also seems a bit strange (to me) to
require closing MailMate to expunge messages, but I usually never quit
applications unless I have to.

A “naive” implementation would prepare all the emails for deletion on exit, but
in practice it would (mostly) happen when MailMate was launched...

2020-09-30 Thread Marco Qualizza

I'll chime in here with my own observations:

* The processes seem to be related to opening new emails (I get both an
"about:" and some number of MTLCompilerServices)
* The processes don't seem to spawn when opening a previously-opened
email
* W.R.T. memory consumption -- I haven't noticed whether the memory used
by the processes depended on the size of the email, but I have seen
MailMate's memory usage (as reported by iStat Menus) exceed 15GB -- I
now periodically check, and restart the app when it gets near 10GB (I'm
restarting at least daily). Currently, it's at 4.9.

Cheers!

Thanks for the details. Let's debug this one off list.

Start by sending the output (after a crash) in a Terminal window if you launch

/Applications/MailMate.app/Contents/MacOS/MailMate

This is because MailMate currently caches some number of the views used to make

With regards to memory consumption, I should clarify: the numbers I
quoted include all of the processes spawned by MailMate. Currently,
according to Activity Monitor, MailMate itself is running at a
(relatively) svelte 950MB, and My All Messages shows 311097 (with All /

One concern is that these processes don’t seem to be going away after
I close a message view. I’m using 5722 and I currently have 11
“about:” processes and 14 MTLCompilerService processes.

Not particularly large emails or images, just a typical variety, though
some are “image-heavy” (political fundraising usually is). It’s
not a matter of running low on memory for me. I have 64 GB of RAM with
about 21GB in use.

The primary MailMate process is currently using 300MB, with another 3MB
for 1 MailMate Networking process, anywhere from 8MB to 14MB for each
“about:” process, and from 9MB up to 60MB for each
MTLCompilerService.

Typically "Alt" (common on Windows keyboards) is mapped to the Mac

keyboard have a 3rd modifier key of some sort, i.e. Control, Alt, and

And after quitting MailMate, I was left with 12 MTLCompilerService

I seem to be adding multiple “about:” processes each time I advance
to another message. It doesn’t matter if the message is new or not.
More complicated messages seem to spawn more “about:” processes. A
text-only message gave me 2, while an image-heavy message created 9.

Re: [MlMt] Keybindings for non-US keyboards

2020-09-30 Thread Robert Brenstein
He meant that to produce the left square bracket on the German keyboard,
he needs to press alt-5 (option-5 if you will). So how do you produce a
shortcut that itself requests the alt key to be hold. Will the alt key
be recognized doubly, once to produce the bracket and then to produce
the shortcut? I gather he has to remap these shortcuts to completely
other keys.

Typically "Alt" (common on Windows keyboards) is mapped to the Mac
"Option" key rather than "Command" (a.k.a. "cloverleaf".) Does your
keyboard have a 3rd modifier key of some sort, i.e. Control, Alt, and
Something Else? I know that Windows keyboards usually have a Windows
key, which is often mapped to Mac's Command.

[MlMt] can send mail but new mail doesn't download into inbox

2020-09-30 Thread Ken Pope
I’m using MM 1.13.2 (5673) on Catalina 10.15.7. Everything perfect
until a few hours ago when: (a) although I can send mail, new mail
doesn’t appear in my inbox; (b) my account (k...@kenpope.com) under
“sources” turned red, and all the boxes under it went from black to
light gray; & (c) although new mail doesn’t appear in the inbox, it
*does* appear under “sources” if I highlight the red source account.

Although MM is my main client, I have 4 others (Mail, GyazMail, Airmail,
& Postbox) that I use solely to download mail and provide backups—the
k...@kenpope.com continues to download and appear in their inboxes.

Any idea about what’s gone wrong and how I can fix it?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [MlMt] can send mail but new mail doesn't download into inbox

2020-09-30 Thread Robert Brenstein
What you describe is a case when the account is taken offline in MM.
Such a thing happened to me a couple times when one of my providers had
problems for a while and MM could not connect. You can also take an
account offline as a user, which I also did a few times.

If you go to the sources section, you can right-click on the account and
the popup will have an option to take the account back online.

Does the account and its folders all have "(offline)" appended to their

Have you tried selecting the account and using 'Mailbox->Take
"[accountname]" Online'?

One possibility with so many clients accessing the same account is that
you're hitting a server-side limit on simultaneous connections, either
from the same IP or to the same account. MM usually pops up an alert
when that happens, especially with per-account limits (which look like
authentication errors) but when the connection is simply ignored at the
network level there may be no useful reason to do anything beyond
offlining the account and turning it red.

Re: [MlMt] nuclear option

2020-09-30 Thread Antonio Leding
I doubt this is even remotely related but I will say that for some MM
users (i.e. ME), inadvertently wiping out mail can be quite easy.
Here’s how it happened…

* I receive some mail alert that is clicked on either intentionally or
by circumstance.

* This will take you directly to the “All Messages” portion of the
MM client with the message from the alert brought into focus and
selected.
* Sometimes, that message will be part of a thread that I need to read
more about so I then click on one of the many highlightable fields in
the just received message.
* This of course creates a new ad hoc filter - then, I often find it
necessary to move from the “All Messages” section to the “All /
Junk / Deleted” section.
* When there, on a couple of occasions, I have highlighted a large range
of messages for deletion and inadvertently forgotten that some of these
were already in the Deleted\Trash section of my client.

Again, I doubt this is what is happening but it is one somewhat related
use case that I have encountered…

Yes, that's it. Sorry for expressing myself poorly. I am, of course,
used to []{} even if I can't see them on the keyboard. But __quis
composit compositor__: how can use one to compose a command if itself
must be composed? But basically I'd like other (standard) combinations
that don't require composed keys. I think indent/dedent maybe standard
because I think my IDE does this: TextMate uses

Regarding names: I'm fed up of Apple changing the names and designs (I
want my Apple key back!!!) for the keys but on this Apple keyboard
(around 2016 notebook style) the option key definitely says "alt". Maybe
it would be just possible to show the combination differently? I think I
"learned" that TextMate used cmd + alt + 5/6 without ever thinking about
[].

Thanks so much! I've shut off the other mail clients until this
problem can be solved.

As you suggested, I used the "take account online" function, which
turned the source account back from red to black, and all the folders
underneath back to black from gray. (Thanks, again!)

However, though I can still send, the inbox does not download incoming
mail.

And as the source account was trying to refresh, the following message
popped up:

MailMate encountered the following error: "Warning: Non-standard
response treated like NO (response: "Disconnected for inactivity.",
command: "").".
Mailbox: "INBOX/Sent".

Retry Take Account Offline Try Later

[end pop-up]

Any further steps I could take to solve the problem?
