Safari with Mountain Lion
.Hi: I attempted to surf the web last night, but first I couldn't get the reader to work. I accidentally brought up a reading list and though it's now hidden, I can no longer get the shortcut keys to work except, ironically, the reader. What did I do and how do I undo it so that I can once again use Safari? Thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: safari question please shortcut
Not a dumb question at all. Use command plus left or right bracket. They are right next to the P key. Re: updates for Itunes and Iwork
What I discovered is that you have to hold down the VO keys now as you scroll with the arrow keys in any playlist. I'm having to do this in Mail even as I'm scrolling through the messages or I get a lot of stuff read to me that I don't want to hear and have never heard bbefore. If I hold the VO keys down I just hear what I want to while scrolling. Re: performance issues in Mail being reported - wide spread?
I am seeing some delay, but also a lot of garbage that I don't want to hear as I scroll through the messages, even when I interact with a particular column such as subject. This behavior isn't always stable, meaning that sometimes, for no reason I can think of, it stops doing that and reads as it should. Pressing the VO keys while scrolling helps, but doesn't get rid of the problem. Sometimes I have a glorious mess. All of the settings look like they were in SL. Re: The lion sleeps tonight
Am I missing some voice choices? I'm only finding Alex, Fred, Olivia and Vicki. I might be missing one or two, but only Alex sounds high quality to me. Are there others somewhere? I've looked in the default voices under speech and found nothing else. I also tried checking the voices with the VO/CMD/arrow keys and managed to crash mail. :) My computer knows when somebody that's almost computer illiterate is using it. :) Thanks. Re: The lion sleeps tonight
Hi Donna; I found that you can scroll through your playlists by using VO/arrow keys. My husband who is sighted said that when I was using just the arrow keys as I used to do, the VO cursor wasn't keeping focus at all. As far as VO being sluggish, it takes forever and a day to unload and reload. I'm slowly figuring out my mail issue, but it's still a bit unstable. Just my thoughts. Re: yet another VO feature broken?
I can't just press VO/j to jump from an open message to the messages table either. The conversation method of looking at messages is ok, but again, more cumbersome as you have to open and close each message. What a pain not having that option. Things should get easier, not harder. I take back my previous post regarding mail

Hotspots
Hi: I know that the hotspots were a bit unreliable in SL but now they don't work at all in Lion, and the hotspot chooser shows them as inactive. I had two of them set for ITunes that actually stuck, and I miss them. How do I enable them once again, as I have no idea how they were disabled in the first place? Re: speech loss
I've been losing speech often since upgrading to Lion. If I leave my computer for an hour or two, I can pretty much guarantee that VO will not work. Another mail question with Lion
Hi: I was going to personally reply to a list member but I can't figure out how to highlight each header. Before, I could open the message with return, shift tab to headers, vo/right arrow to the email address so that I could select it. Now I can't seem to highlight any headers and I don't think they're hidden as I can see the info, I just can't seem to place the cursor on any particular heading. It's been a heck of a long time since I attempted this, and I am barely computer literate so it might be obvious, and if so, I apologize. I've got mail in classic view. Re: speech loss
Hi: I just used the screen saver that dimmed the screen; the default one, but suspecting that, I turned it off to no avail. I haven't had the problem today though as soon as I post this I probably will. That's usually what happens. :) I think that it was because the Log Me In program was not hidden. On a different note, I discovered quite by accident that control+left arrow brings up the dashboard. I couldn't figure out why it kept popping up. Make sure you press that option key good and solidly. :) F12 still works also. I have a feeling it has to do with that spaces and applications thing. My apologies
The only thing I have complained to customer service about is a problem I was having with ITunes, and I politely let them know that I didn't like the way that VO navigates the screen; everything is out of place and less convenient, The layout looks the same to a sighted user, but not to Vo. plus I was having sluggishness. The latter was because I didn't have enough memory, and my poor computer couldn't handle the music browser. Yes, I don't always handle change well, but I can assure you that I haven't complained about anything else to CS though I have times when VO won't wake up with my computer and it is hard to start it, both with my old Mini with 2 gigs, and my brand new one with 5 gigs of Ram. I'll live with it, no problem. Sorry if I complain too much, I simply replied to a bad thread, and I know that there are some of those. I'll shut up now. Alex is the best voice ever, and I love my Mac. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Viewing Music by Album or artist
I just use the find feature most of the time rather than wading through all of my music etc. I've got a hotspot set to search, and for some reason it sticks. After you type in your search quarry just Vo+right arrow a couple times and you should see your music table. Interact with it, and VO+down arrow through it until you find the desired results and press return to listen, or you can just press return at the top of the list to hear it all. Re: accessible pandora apps
Pandora is working to an extent as there is a new site that shows all of the music ID info and bios etc, but the problem is that the controls are still not visible, and it will only play 2 or 3 songs and stop. Re: pandora issue solved
For those of you who don't have the Piano Pubb app, you can go to pandora.com/your name, and get into your spacific account where it shows your stations. You can choose by pressing return on the one you want, I believe. The new site also shows them, but I haven't played with that as much. Re: Have a question on selecting multiple item and navigating by form field and text
Hi: For some reason, when loading Google I always land on the form field so I can edit the search. Maybe it's because I turned off the summary when the page loads feature so Vo doesn't read the whole page automatically. It simply loads on the form field. Hope that helps. Is there a way to navigate text element by text element, sometimes it would be useful just to get to the text section of a webpage, especially ones that contain many links. Is there a hot key to navigate text element by text element on the web? 3. I was reading the select multiple items section and tried it on the Voice over utilities, VO + F8, and went into his web section, and went to the web rotor popup menu. I wanted to select multiple items or deselect multiple items but I could not. Plus VO does not tell you if the checkbox on the popup menu is on or off, even when I pressed VO + f8. Can anyone shine a light on this? I can live with having to close the menu for every selected Item I want but it would be more convenient to just select all items I want then close the popup menu. 4. Is there a way to set up multiple tabs upon starting safari? I had multiple tabs for my internet explorer on windows since this way I have quick access to my bank account webpage, phone bill web page, Google search, Gmail, NFL website, book share, and others. Does anyone know how to do this? 6. Is there a way to activate a link from within the web item rotor? Like for example, instead of just going to the link selected from the web item rotor can I activate that link so that the web page will load up auto magically? This would save me on more steps in selecting the link. If there is no way to do this, then I will send an email to apple

Re: Vo delay
Hi Kevin: Thanks for your response. I have to start Vo several times because it freezes up easier too, or states I'm somewhere where I'm not. I hope I don't have to reinstall from scratch; totally restore the system. I just did a permission repair about a week ago because I was getting busy signals in Safari rendering it almost useless. Weird Safari issue/voiceover restarting
Hi: I wripped a CD of mine for my own use with a bad track and now I can't use Safari without VO restarting every time I try to navigate. We are using Spaces, but have been for quite some time with no problems. Does anybody know if this problem could be connected with the CD? Could a Mac be prey to another Media Max attack? I can no longer jump between the sources and songs table with VO/j. I haven't had a chance to play with it much yet, but this disappoints me as I use that key combo all of the time. Magic track pad
Hi: As quickly as I learned most of the basic commands of the OS10 format, you'd think I could pick up on using the track pad quickly. However I am having a real hard time with it and can not accomplish much at all. I am getting very discouraged. At least learning the keyboard commands was easier because I learned and accomplished something each day. I was able to build enough confidence that even with any problems that cropped up, I kept plugging away. Not so with this stupid Track Pad. I heard the basics but they don't all seem to work even. For instance, I can hear the sound indicating that I have selected something, but I can't seem to get it to activate except for Safari when links are opened as soon as my finger touches that choice. I can't even choose a spacific link because of this. Am I slow or what? I may take the thing back if I don't accomplish something soon. Thanks for any suggestions or information on tutorials I may use. Oh, by the way, the response to my original message about ITunes 10 ended up my drafts folder somehow. I appologize as I was having a terrible night and then I couldn't get to the tables I needed. ITunes search
Hi all: The search feature doesn't seem to want to work correctly in ITunes 10. I type in a search quary and come up with a blank list. I've tried using search options to no avail. Does anybody know what's going on or how to use the search feature now? I seem to have problems others don't have. It's the nature of things, I guess. :) It's frustrating though., Thanks in advance. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: VO J not working in new ITunes, any alternatives?
Hi: When I use command/option 3 to go to list-view in ITunes, I no longer see my LCD section. The browser is on, but I can not tell what band or artist is oplaying as I could before. Cursor tracking problems with ITunes update
Hi all: I just wondered if anybody else has had tracking problems since the new ITunes update? Sometimes even pressing vo/command/f5 doesn't do the trick either. I seem to have probloems others don't, but this is really getting annoying. I checked my cursor tracking options in the Vo utilities menus and they are fine; no changes evident. Any ideas? Re: iOS 6 Disappointment!
I have to admit that it is pretty amazing how Apple products have speech built in. I can use my iPhone and iPad like anyone else. I think sometimes Apple and others try to release too many features at once and don't make sure they all work correctly first. They get in a hurry. Let me point out that it is not just Apple who does this. Sent from my iPad On Feb 15, 2013, at 11:59 AM, "J.P." wrote: > Agreed Chris... cursor tracking problems in ITunes
Hi Ricardo: I can't find the original reply you gave me, but I know you wanted some idea about what exactly is going on. Well, the mouse cursor wanted to stay on the Apple Logo, or the previous song button. I was trying to do things all over the place. Obviously the VO cursor was moving without the mouse cursor. Once in a while the VO/command/f5 key combination would link them, but not very often. It got rather anoying when I was trying to choose a song to play, or a radio stream to listen too, and nothing would happen. I'd check the mouse location, and sure enough, it would be on one of the previously mentioned areas. have done a permissions repair, and now when I try to move from songs to sources, I get a busy signal for a minute or two. The mouse cursor seems to move better now, so maybe I can't have everything work. My remote app on my IPhone takes a full minute or 2 to find my library now too. How do you click and double tap with a track pad? I have the Magic Track Pad, and sometimes when links are highlighted, they tend to activate whether I want them to or not. I can't seem to double tap on anything, nothing happens. I am so frustrated with the thing that it is just sitting here on my desk getting more dust than use. Re: Not able to sign into itunes
Oh, I didn't look at the original message as I posted a similar problem with busy signals the other day. Sorry. Incidentally Antonio, my sighted husband is having trouble playing videos since the last update, and I have been having mouse problems and busy signals also.. Re: track pads
Double tapping does nothing so I can't do much. I do all kinds of things with the IPhone. I got so frustrated that I gave my Magic Trackpad to my husband. Re: replying directly to sender?
Here is how I do it. Hit enter on the message you want to reply too. Then shift tab to message headers, use shift command right arrow to highlight the address, go into the context menu with vo/shift m. Next arrow to reply to sender, hit enter and the to: field will automatically be filled in. It sounds harder than it is. I hope that helps. Re: iPhone or iTouch?
Another thing that negates its value is the $30 data plan. My family would be paying $90 monthly in data plan fees. $30 for family would be great, but not per phone. monthly. It's outrageous in my opinion. My husband has an IPhone, but I'll probably never get one because of the cost of the phone and data plan. The DVI adaptor is not the right one. That one still passes through the monitor detect signaling so it just moves the problem further down the chain of connections. For those not familiar, without a monitor connected the Mac tries to detect what's hooked up. This detection apparently hangs the machine, makes it run horribly slow or other bad behaviors if there isn't a monitor hooked up. If you hook up an NTSC adaptor the detect runs as though a screen is hooked up and then everything works. Yeah, I bet I did send it to Rich. Sorry about the mix-up. I'll see if I can find the message and send it to you personally. Again, I apologize. I think that part of the problem also is getting these agencies to realize how accessible OSX is now. this has been my personal experience. Re: Mail reading the status as blank after scrolling through unread messages
HI: The status of most of my messages is blank. Sometimes the Voiceover cursor gets stuck on the status column and you just have to VO/left or right arrow to get to the messages column. Occasionally I have to shift/tab to get out of the scroll area. Mine does that every once in a while as well. If it's doing this most all of the time you may have to do a permissions repair or reinstall updates and/for SL. It's simply a focus issue as far as I can tell. Re: no mac for blind people in Belgium
Hi Mark: I certainly don't hold a grudge as everybody is entitled to their opinion. However, if it weren't for the Commission for the blind here in Oregon, there is no way that I could perform the job I was hired for. I had to have a programmer write JAWS scripts so that I could get to the buttons, read the drop down boxes that just had graphics for names, etc. I couldn't have afforded the thousands of dollars that has costed. He is working as we speak since the company I work for has changed software and everything we had done in the past regarding the original software is now null and void. I could have not afforded a Braille display at about 12,000 dollars. I can say with certainty that there are few if any companies that would provide any of these services. Unfortunately many government funded agencies, including the Oregon Commission for the blind do know little about Mac accessibility as they have contracts with certain vendors, and, face it,whether we like it or not, a majority of companies still use Windows based software. My husband and I both decided on our own to try the Mac, and though I've had some problems, I'm glad I did. I've learned it without an instructor. We nearly lost our Commission last summer so when I hear people talking about how we shouldn't have government agencies such as this, I have to disagree though they do have their problems. Yes, some people do rely on others to much, but not all of us do. Like you, I grew up in the public school system in a rural area. I was born blind also. I'll get off my soap box now. You've got a point. I wish I could do all of this on my own. OCB has been willing to step in after my employment to help me, but I know that many organizations don't. They do sign over expensive equipment which you are then responsible for getting repaired regardless of your income. I don't like to be baby sat, don't get me wrong, but I'm glad I have some assistance. I think that many do need to assess what they would do without these organizations. You've got me thinking now.
