bootcamp win10 and sharpkeys?
Hi everyone, I want to make a bootcamp windows 10 so i can use os x and windows side by side. On the mac i have seil and karabiner and vmware fusion but for some programs I need to use bootcamp. I was wondering though does sharpkeys still work on windows 10? I need an insert key and i would really like to have windows key and alt key function in a normal way. Re: bootcamp win10 and sharpkeys?
Hello, Yes, I do know that bootcamp is not a virtual machine. I am merely asking if sharpkeys does still work within windows 10 because i want to use that with bootcamp. IF I were using a vm i would not neet sharpkeys because I could use vmwares internal remapping capabilities and sail/carabiner. reinstalling a native lion macbook air
Hello everyone, I want to reinstall my 2011 macbook air. It came preinstalled with lion. I did hear that it has a recovery partition and that you can access this by hitting command+r while booting the machine. Is this accessible with voiceover? Can I then format my disk with disk utility or is running a reinstall enough? verifying/connecting mba to wifi in recovery mode
Hi everyone, I want to completely reinstall lion on my macbook air that came preinstalled with it. I turned off disk encryption and was able to open the recovery partition while booting by pressing command+r. The help document states though that, ifyou want to reinstall, you have to be connected to the internet. I am not sure if the computer is connected or how i can connect because i cant read the status menu (command+2x m). I know my laptop is normally connected to wifi but am not sure if these settings are stored on the recovery disk as well. How can i check if the machine is connected and connect it manually if it is not/ Or is it not needed after all if you just want a standard reinstall? Re: verifying/connecting mba to wifi in recovery mode
Hi, I guess an alternative would be to make a bootable usb lion install, i think Mike arrigo did a podcast on htis and there might be others. I do suppose I can still use disk utility in recovery mode to erase my disk and i would then use the usb drive to reinstall the system thereby bypassing the need for an internet connection. Would this work in my case? reinstalling my macbook air from external usb thumb drive?

serious problems burning iso to disk on mavericks
Hi everyone, I wanted to experiment with bootcamp next to my mac os x so i wanted to burn a windows iso to dvd in order to try it out. I have an external dvd-drive that i have bought a few months ago and used successfully to read a few dvds in the past. I just bought some new dvdd and inserted one into the external drive. The mac recognized the dvd and i told it to open finder.I went to disk utility opened the relevant iso through option+cmd+o and selected burn from the files menu. Then i get a message cannot burn disk because the disk drive is not available. What might go wrong here? I am really peeved because i can apparently read dvds with this one but cant seem to write them. I also tried burning the file just from the finder window but the seem result. I also cant find where i can eject the disk on my macbook air 2013 since it does not show up on finder when containing an empty disc. Help would be appreciated since i need a bootable dvd (bootable flash wont work). problems with apple mail + google 2-step verification
Hi everyone, I use my google account and gmail a lot to create new acoounts on sites etc. As an extra precaution i thought it might be wise to setup 2-step verification. The setting itself went fine but then getting apple mail to work did not. Since apple mail cant work with sms verification codes you have to generate an application specefic password on the google site. That part on the site, at least with safari does not seem to be accessible. I do see the dimmed generate button but not the parts where you should be able to select your mail application and the device that you use. I wonder if others have experienced this as well and if there are any solutions (besides turning the safety feature off again which i did for the time being)? working efficiently in the terminal with braille (or speech)
Hi, I am following a podcast that has some pretty nice basic terminal introductions, i sometimes miss the old dos days and have liked for a while to learn a bit about the terminal. However, i cant say i really find it usable with braille on os x. I do see the command prompt but vo+left or quicknav left does not seem to do anything. The only way that i seem to be able to read what my last command did is using the item chooser but that blobs everything on one line and sometimes spills over and just in general does not seem to be all that useful. How do others use this, can it be done with braille or do you have to use speech? Is it possible to just read the text which terminal gives after you give it your last command> I dont want to read the whole terminal window just the last command and its result if at all possible. Hi, I am playing an m4b file, never played one before and am using itunes to do it (thats why i sent my last question). To my amazement when i stopped the file and reopened it it resumed where i left off! Is this an itunes setting or is this something pertaining to the file format? thanks, Greetings, Anouk, -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. wifi-problems with windows 7 under bootcamp
Hi everyone, Sorry if this is slightly ot but i am using my mac privately now as well as in a workrelated situation. For the last situation i use windows 7 under bootcamp for productivity reasons. I notice however, that while on the macside wifi works great on windows the connection is VERY unstable, the network connection cant be established or it drops everytime and you have to reconnect manually. My macbook air is from july 2013 bur a friend of mine who has an older macbook with bootcamp and win7 is running into the seem issues. I was wondering if more people have these and what your solutions are? Apparently bootcamp installs 3 wifi drivers and i was wondering if that might bring a conflict? I was wondering if an external wifi adapter might solve the issue? I think its weird still though because I have VERY good wifi on the macside and all the other stuff is working well when using bootcamp. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. hiding ibooks in ibooks app on the mac
Hi, I have a fairly large ibooks library with books that i bought in the ibooks store. On ios i can filter the selection to only show ones stored on that device. I do notice that if i delete a book from my iphone the copy also sdisappears from the mac. But I cant seem to filter on the mac the way i can on ios only showing the books that are stored on the mac at that time. Is this possible somewhere? I love the fact that the boks are in sync in where you are with reading on either device. vmware fusion+windows 10 sharing an external drive
Hi, I just upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7. I have the newest version of vmware fusion and am running the newest version of nvda as screenreader. I want to share my external harddrive within vmware fusion so that I can copy files from within windows to that drive (i cant simply copy files out of the vm to the mac while I CAN copy files into the vm from the mac, a bit weird). I shared the drive within the vms preferences (command+e sharing turned on sharing first of course). I hit win+e within windows 10 to go to file explorer, i go to network and turn on public file sharing but the drive does not turn up within the network as it would have within windows 7. Is anyone experiencing anything similar or does anyone have suggestions that i could try to get htis working? Thanks in advance, The drive is ofrmatted as mac os x extended journalling but since vmware is making it into a network drive this should not matter (this is why i dont just give the drive to windows though). Re: finder busy in large folders and can't create new users
Hi, I think its more about how many files and folders are in there as opposed to size on disk bu ti might be wrong, my large fodler contains about 1000 items in total and is about 1.5tb in size. using vo temporary settings on someone elses machine
using vo temporary settings on someone elses machine Hi everyone, Sometimes I have to use a different ma cthen my own when i need to demonstrate stuff to others. I have made some custom vo settings for my braille display and keyboard commander though that i dont like to have to change each time that i use a mac that i snot mine. Will the export settings export all of them and be able to import them on a different mac? Is it then possible to get back the settings that were there previously (for when i give the machine back to its original owner), or perhaps save the settings udner different filenames? ibooks on the mac, how do you all magane this?
Hi, I hate to bring this up again, maybe I am doing something wrong but reading ibooks on the mac (using braille) remains quite the challenge. Next chapter command does not seem to work and i have to use the item chooser quite often to get text to scroll down so i can read new material. Quite time consuming and inefficient. I can read on ios using speech, just read from cursor, but i comprehend text better if i read it in braille and normally find this experience more efficient on the mac. Any tips guides or podcasts that can help with htis or is ibooks on the mac just not as accessible as of now? To begin with: it is free. A sighted guy, named Tim Sniffen if I remember correctly, did a book on mastering the mac. His audience is mainly veterans, but the book is amazing, especially when you go through the chapters for pages and numbers. The author wants to contradict the reasoning, that the mac is okay for home use, but for more advanced office applications and uses, people have to revert to windows. He talked to people asking them what it is, that the mac cannot do, where windows is the tool of choice. After reading these chapters, you may well feel differently about this. Creating a default pages template, using custom templates, hanging indents, inserting and formatting pictures, working with tables, styles, specific accessibility issues, it's all in this book. I've been reading and working through it all day, and I just wanted to point you to it if you would like a good and structured read on how to use these apps from a voiceover perspective. The author starts kind of easy, but then really gets up to speed. Just a tip. Search for Sniffen in the ibooks store on your phone or ipad, and it will be among the first few results. tip: reading 'mastering the macintosh with vo' ON THE MAC
Hi everyone, I am not sure about the legalities of this but since ibooks on the mac is rather inaccessible with a braille display and even though you can use a braille display on ios it just does not feel as comfortable as reading braille on a mac to me. So, i got this tip from an acquaintance of mine and thought i would share. Since this is a free and apparently unprotected ibook (this does not neccessarily go hand in hand, some paid ibooks are protected others are not). It is actually possi ble to read the ibook on the mac with safari. Epub apparently is just a container, at least the text of the ibook is some kind of html. to do this: - imho its easiest to download the book on ios, make sure to open it as well on that device. - then open ibooks on the mac, it will ask you for your apple id so it can sync with icloud - open the book on the mac once as well. - then go to the finder and use the go to folder commando (cmd+shift+g) and paste the following path ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books this is the folder where apple stores the ibooks that you have downloaded onto your mac. The books are given a random number, in my case since the book was the last one i added it was easy to find just by looking at the date modified column. - go to that folder and then to the underlying ops folder. Here you will find the chapter files. Its perhaps a good idea to copy the whole book to a different folder so that it will be easier to find in future. hth Greetings, Anouk, -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi, my problem is that i only seem to be able to do it by using the item chooser and even that stops at a certain point. If i try to read it normally then i cant get to the next page or chapter. Also i could never seem to figure out how to use the table of contents to navigate to a spot directly. Admittedly it has been a few months since i tried this though. Hi, I have mailed aple accessibility as well. These things should just work imho without you having to make your own shortcuts, the default ones should just do their job. garagebands software instruments sounding rather disappointing
Hi everyone, I just got my first midi keyboard the m-audio keystation 61 and i like it. I use it with garageband on the mac via usb and it just works immediately. The instruments that i have in gb are rahter disappointment though. I did download the extra stuff and i have mainstage for the jam packs but still most of it sounds like a very cheap home keyboard. Are there any other instruments that you can get? Thanks in advance for any info. Hi, Just to clarify, I suppose you used a sighted person to find that skip ads button the first time? Because i never see it in form controls or item chooser. Re: hot to download youtube videos on mac?
Hi, I tried mactubes as well but I PERSONALLY vastly prefer a program called downie. Its totally accessible and can work with many many many other sites besides youtube. I installed a plugin for safari and now it is even easier, when you are playin gthe video that you want to download from youtube, in the safari toolbar there will be a button open with downie. Then, if the video is part of a playlist you will have the opportunity to download that in its entirity. The program can even extract just the audio and save it as mp3, deleting the original mp4 or other files. Its all pretty intuitive and automatic. The app is not free but there is a 7 day trial. I think it costs 15 orso, for me its totally worth that. I have been downloading twit podcasts and youtube videos with it all day and it just owrks flawlessly. Re: hot to download youtube videos on mac?
Hi, I think I said this already: The video gets downloaded first then, if you want (you can select this in the apps settings) the app converts the file to mp3 and then deletes the original video. You can give it as many videos ad you like and if you like it will autostart them one after another so you dont need to look at it again. What i like about this app in contrast with mactubes is that you can use safari to select the videos that you want to import, i personally did not like that mactubes limited the results to 50 and then you had to go to the following pages. With downie you can also get a whole playlist or, as i like to do it get all the videos by a certain user by going to his or her profile selcting videos and then selecting the first one, once that one is playing you can easily do next video until you have them all (with each one you then select open with downie in the safari toolbar) it works quite well for me personally. Hi Ray, I have not found that one yet: how can you configure downie to autoload all videos? Another thing that i like is that, if you have the safari extension installed downie works with LOADS of other sites as well, even sites that it does not officially support (like twit). I will certainly be buying this in a few days totally worht its price to me personally although i have yet to try if it works with protected youtube videos that are set to not be downloadable or if it owrks with videos that use ads. Hi, Ah see how different people are I see this as a big plus, i found mactubes not easy at all to use and am able to use the youtube site with great ease. The extension for downie shows up in your safari toolbar so you have to make sure that the toolbar is not hidden in the view menu. weird issue with web rotor under yosemite
Hi everyone, I just installed yosemite for the first time (clean install) and I noticed something strange with the web rotor. It seems tor efresh now each time it opens it says for example loaded 30 links or more. In the past it showed me the total of the links on the page but now it does not seem to do this anymore. I used to rely on this at times. It does say this in the summary if you turn it on but i do use braille a lot and then (luckily) the summary is not spoken. Anyone else noticed this? possibly getting back to the mac
Hi everyone, I have been away from the mac community since april 2010 (although i did buy an iphone in september'. I am thinking of getting back into it when the new macbook air is released and if it fullfills the hopes that I have for it. I have heard rumors that it will be released nearly immediately with mac osx lion, has anyone heard confirmation about this= I was also wondering if all the standard apple apps will still be accessible within lion and if anyone knows if there will also be a new iwork version soon. Furthermore there were a few programs that I wanted to use on the mac but were not accessible or not all THAt accessible at the time. For example at that time there was no really good usenet client or a client to play online game swith )muds'. I was wondering if this has changed now. I was also wondering if garageband is now accessible and if the seem is true for protools= Vuze )for torrents' didnt really work back then, i was wondering if this is still the case. I know we had just gotten finereader when I stopped using hte mac but that it only was a light version and a version 9 at that, i was wondering if there are now any more ocr offerings on the mac platform= A lot of questions I know but it might help me to decide wether or not to get back onto the mac wagon. external soundcard for macbook
Hello, I am intending to use either protools or garageband once I get a macbook pro so I will need to connect a midi keyboard, also I want to connect some speakers to it. Are there any external soundcard solutions for use with the macbook family that also have accessible drivers? With either a firewire, usb or optical connection to connect it to the macbook. It owuld b enice if it had a midi input and xlr fixed outputs for speakers. I know m-audio has a big range of cards but most of them seem to be internal. Any advice would be appreciated. Op 13-7-2011 21:50, Gary Readfern-Gray schreef: Hi Chris, just my short take on using a Mac and audio production. Well, I bought my mac to get an accessible version of Pro tools and found that I just wasn't using my Windows machine at home at all after that. Whilst I still use Jaws every day at work, I now prefer the Mac environment and never thought I'd ever be saying that. OK, So, I first found pro tools very clunky to use up until last night where I heard a tutorial by Kevin Reeves and I now I've found it to be brilliant and it will do all the things in your list apart from work with your dxi plugs, you'll have to use a vst adapter and use the vst versions. So, finally about the price, People are selling there MBoxes fairly cheaply on EBay so you could probably pick up a second hand mbox 2 mini for about 150 bucks or maybe less, I've just checked and they're going from 59 bucks to 150 and, of course, you get pro tools in the box. If you do it, you'll need Pro tools version 8 so that you won'd have to pay extra for the 8.4 accessible version. Still a chunk of money i know but much cheaper than the 600 for pro tools 9. deffinately, deffinately do that because you won't look back if you do. Plus the PTAccess list is very helpful and will help you out using it. OK, so it wasn't very short after all but hth. Can I edit audio, cropping things, paste mixing things, adding effects, using pitch correction on my vocal tracks, adding effects like reverb, panning certain tracks for a better stereo effect, raise or lower volume, identify if I'm clipping on a certain track, etc. 2. Can I over-dubb, and multi-track onto seperet tracks then manipulate the tracks individually? 3. Can I record both audio as well as midi? 4. Can I play back midi? 5. Say I have a midi file already arranged, can I import it, and then over-dubb all my vocal tracks, and add pitch correction and effects like reverb etc. to them? 6. Can I import an mp3 file, then over-dubb/multi-track whatever else on top of it on a seperet track? 7. Can I add dynamic compression and E Q effects or envelope effects to tracks? 8. Can I Do snap to grid kind of editting? 9. Can I have a click track produced by audio, not by midi that I can use to stay in good timing? 10. If I can do midi, is there an ability to quantize each track individually? 11. If I can do midi, can I import .sf2 sound font files and use them? 12. Finally, can I import and use external d x i, and v s t plug ins? If sound studio can do all this, then I may, provided it isn't too confusing of an app for me to work with, consider it, but being I do audio production for a living, it needs to be extremely concised. In addition, since the OCR is done in the cloud, it's slower than doing it all on your computer. My preferred solution is to scan using VueScan and have ABBYY FineReader perform the OCR. If I'm scanning a whole book, I set VueScan to multipage scanning, and scan the whole book into one TIFF file. I have TIFF files all set to open with ABBYY FineReader by default so the file opens automatically and I just have to tell FineReader the title, where to put it and its format.
