Text edit and Lion
Hi everyone! I have a new MacBook air and this is my first adventure with VoiceOver on a Mac computer. I have read the Getting started book, which did give me some minimal starting points. I'm now going through the tutorials done by David Woodbridge. Obviously there are a few things that must have changed in Lion. One of the most annoying things I can't get around comes in Text Edit. I can't believe there's no warning when it over writes a file and that no matter what I do, it just saves it when I quit. That's worse than automatically changing words to something I don't want. Ultimately if I end up using this computer for real, I'll likely spring for Pages or something, hoping that it doesn't do this as well. Also, when I open a file, I sure don't land where David does in his little demo. I have to go through a bunch of radio buttons before I find a list view table of document names. Is there a quicker way to open a document? And I won't even talk about mail yet. Anyway, any help would sure be appreciated. Thanks. Re: Text edit and Lion
Hi Anne! I will check the setting in the voiceOver utility to see how they're set. But I am talking about opening a file within TextEdit. I'm just following along with the mp3 tutorials that David Woodbridge did, although Lion wasn't out yet when he did them. In his demo, when he finished writing in the sample practice file, he just quit the application with Command Q, without closing the window first. I'll try that and see if it responds differently. I did find something online that talked about how if you didn't want to save something in Lion, you have to go to the tool bar and find a previous version and save yourself that way. I've also just learned that it locks files if you don't open them for a certain period and that this preference can be changed in Time Machine. So I guess I'm about to learn Time Machine. I'm just not used to so many things being done for my own good without my knowledge. Wow! Thanks. Thanks Matt, Anne and all of you for the Lion education. Now if only I could change the default state of that check box in the shut down the computer dialog. Oh well, progress, eh? Thanks again. Re: Text edit and Lion
Okay, continuing. First, I did double-check my settings in the navis indeesection of the VoiceOver utility and it is indeed set to keyboard focus. Here's what happens when I open a file in Text edit. First I open the application. I'm beginning to think I should just go in through the documents folder. Anyway, I hit command-O. The first thing I hear is, plain text encoding. I then move with Vo-right-arrow and hear, forward. Then I reach a series of radio buttons, of which list view is the selected one. Then I reach arrange, menu button. Then I reach a popup button which used to say documents. But last time I was in, it changed to downloads. I pressed vo-space on this button and found my user folder as a choice but not documents. So I selected that. Continuing to move right, I pass search and a side bar table and eventually find the list view table, which does seem to contain my documents. Eventually I find my practice document and enter on it. So, I tried adding some text to it and then closing the document with Command-W. It just saved with no possibility of choosing a don't save option. So it looks like only with a new or untitled document do I get that option when using Command-W. Boy, it just seems like I'll fill up my drive with a zillion versions of my file. I then managed to sort of stop interacting with my text and use vo-left-arrow to work my way back to a versions button. I find a browse all versions button but can't figure out how to get to those versions. Hmmm, truly puzzled. Thanks so much. Thanks again, Anne, Ricardo and everyone for the help. And yes, that silly check box that would reopen all windows in any application was unchecked the first time I snooped around in the general tab of system preferences. Is there one place where the Lion changes or differences are described? Thanks so much. I usually have to alt-tab to my desktop when I first boot up. Sometimes VO talks and sometimes it doesn't. Re: Text edit and Lion
Hmmm, I gave up on unchecking that box every time I shut down quite awhile ago. Most of the time I'll hear finder is running in the background, and then I can alt-tab to the desktop. But sometimes it's just silent and I haven't quite been at this long enough to know how fast a MacBook air should boot up. So I just wait till I get bored and then try and see what alt-tab gets me. Re: Web shortcut files [was Re: Drag and drop with VO]
Hi Jason and others! Jason, the one thing I played with that seemed just a bit fuzzy was when to type the Command-shift-D to get the file on the desktop. I did this after typing command-S. Then I had to navigate back to the text area to type the name. When I hit enter after typing the name, I did not get the dialog asking if I wanted to accept the .url extension. But the shortcut did appear on my desktop. When I opened that shortcut, I got a message from core services about text edit creating the file and then after all of that, I got complaints about the certificate of the web site I put in. If it's this crazy to do, I may just stick with bookmarks. Is there a way to copy a url from a page we're visiting to a clipboard and enter it into a text file by pasting? Adjusting system and VoiceOver volumes independently in Lion.
Okay, here was the question I was trying to ask when things really fell apart. This evening I found the David Woodbridge tutorial on adjusting the system volume and VoiceOver volume independently. In his example, he was playing a relax something in the background. When I did it, I was playing his mp3 tutorial. I then used the command-option-command left arrow to find volume. I then held down the modifier keys and moved down to lower the voiceover volume. I followed his exercise and then started moving back up. In his example, when he hit 96 per cent, the next thing was system volume 20 per cent. He could then raise, but not lower the system volume. In my attempt, after 95 per cent was 100 per cent and that was that. When I use function F11 to lower the system volume, it lowered VoiceOver as well. In trying to look around, I can't find any setting that refers to separating these two volume levels. I keep having this experience with his tutorials. He says do this and that will happen. I do this and just hear bink! According to the about this mac, I have 10.7.3. Where am I going wrong here? Thanks. Mail Problems, using Lion.
Okay, everyone, I'm really trying to like my new little MacBook air. I really am. And every time I get close, it bites! The first thing I tried to do on this machine was to set up my mail. I cussed and fussed at it for about two weeks, including a trip to the genious bar and we couldn't get it to accept my server for outgoing mail. It seemed to work okay if I set it to imap, but this is a pop mail account and it just seemed like something was broken here. Then one night, it just started working. I have no idea why. So I started to feel better about this computer. Now tonight as I attempted to write to this list about another subject, I can't send any more. It just says can't connect to this server and gives me the option of changing servers, of which there is no option. I have deleted and recreated this account so many times it's ridiculous. I have set up this account on a zillion, well okay, a few Windows computers with no problems, so I know I'm entering the right things. I actually did it over the phone with the people who host my server where my mail resides just to verify that I was correct. Anyone else have similar experiences? Any suggestions? Thanks. Hi there! Yes, I know about function F11 and F12. But they lowered the volume for both VoiceOver and system sounds. In this example, they were separate. Re: Mail Problems, using Lion.
Hi everyone! First, I know I've entered the correct information because it worked for two weeks. When I got it to work, I had a friend who owns a server just like the one where my mail is stored create a fake account for me. That one worked. After creating that account, my real account started working. The reason I use pop mail is that on my main windows computer, I'm using Eudora, which started out as pop a long time ago. I have all my folders set up on my computer along with way too many messages in my inbox. This MacBook air is to be used when I'm traveling or not at my desk. What I want to do here is to read mail and leave it on the server. So if I readjust everything, it could work, but it's just a bit more than I want to do at the moment because Mail busted something. And I can't imagine what kind of mess I could create as I delete this account over and over again. And I'm also sure about the port settings and such because we couldn't get it to work at the Apple store either. In searching online I have found a bunch of references to people having problems with Mail, it working for awhile, losing it again and so on. It sure is discouraging though. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably end up doing all sorts of strange things in the near future. I just can't believe how much time I've wasted on this. Yikes! Re: Mail, unread versus read messages.
Okay, you might be right. And in the act of trying, I seem to have made a mess of mail. Here's what I have. When I first open Mail, it says inbox, so many messages, so many unread. VO says messages table is under the cursor. I can open a message with enter and VO-J does take me to the text. If I tab from there, it says message content, row 1 of 1. Tab again and it says mailboxes table, then I'm back at messages. And after doing what I thought was the correct directions to disable the preview pane, from the messages table, VO-left or right arrow just takes me through the fields, date received, status, etc. If I stop interacting with the messages table, VO-right arrow takes me to a horrizontal splitter. Is this the one I use? If I VO-right from this splitter, it says mail activity, then next is another horrizontal splitter. Continuing right, I get new mailbox button, hide mail activity button, mailboxes action button, then back to message content. Now I can't find the table. I've ended up in funny menus sometimes too. If I quit mail, I can then come back in and find my messages table again. Boy, if someone could help me sort out the mess I've made, I'd sure appreciate it. Hey, at least I can send messages this week. I have no idea why it started working again, but I'm not asking. Anyway, thanks so much for the help. Hi Anne! Okay, you're right. When not interacting with the table, I pressed VO-down-arrow and there it was! Horrizontal splitter. Is this the one I should then route my mouse to and double tap? Thanks Ioana! I was just about to ask this question. Do you know if holding down command-option-right-arrow will make the music scrub slowly forward, like an old tape recorder? re: using the mouse.
Hi everyone! I can't believe I'm doing this. It drives me crazy when there's just been a discussion on a list about something and then someone writes in and asks, what was that again? So, tail between legs, ears back, here I go. I was so excited about mail finally behaving that I accidentally deleted the message about using the actual mouse. I'd love to be able to wander around the track pad and get VoiceOver feedback. Is it that I go into universal access and change the delay there to zero? I think there's another step I've forgotten though. So please forgive me and I promise to pay closer attention from now on. But if someone could resend me that original post, I'd be most grateful. Drop box question.
Hi everyone! Okay, making progress. Last night I installed Drop box on my Macbook air. I have to say, wow was that install easier than it was on my Windows 7 machine! It all talked very nicely. Okay, now what? On my Windows machine, the install just put a shortcut on my desktop, I entered on it and there were my folders. On the Mac, I went into the Applications folder and found Dropbox in the table. I've tried Command-O and VO-space. It just says drop box has no windows. The only thing I can do at this point seems to be to command-tab back into the finder and close the window. I can't find anything on the dropbox wweb site about differences in using it on the Mac. Any suggestions? Much appreciated. Messages table not reading subject after adding new mailboxes in Mail.
Hi everyone! In mail, using Lion, classic view, I just created a bunch of new mailboxes and then added rules which send all my list messages to the appropriate mailboxes. That was easy and works like a charm. However, just one snag. I navigate with up and down arrow in the mailboxes table till I find mailbox which contains unread messages. Then I tab to the messages table. As I up and down arrow around, it says image, unread, but does not read who the message is from or what the subject is. Any thoughts on why the display has changed and how I can get this back? Thanks. Veronica -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi there! In the messages table, I can VO-right arrow, I can find subject, sender, etc. But before I created all of these other mailboxes, VO read all of the status items each time I'd arrow through the messages column. When I first open mail and it reads in my inbox, it read all of the fields. But when I changed to my Mac Visionaries mailbox, no go! I'm also noticing that mine says unread, image, blank, buddy, then sender and subject. A friend's mac does not say blank. Is this controlled by a say blank setting in VO? Thanks. Re: Messages table not reading subject after adding new mailboxes in Mail.
Quick nav is definitely off. Everything read just fine until I created a bunch of new mailboxes. When I select a new mailbox, and go back to the messages table, all fields are read for the first message, but not for any of the rest of the messages. I can VO-right arrow to the rest of the fields, but this is just so strange. If this were Window-eyes, I'd think that adding mailboxes took up room on the screen. I'm just clueless right now. Re: Messages table not reading subject after adding new mailboxes in Mail.
Jonathan, VO says messages table, and I just use arrow keys to move up and down the list. I hear everything when I just tab into the table. Hitting left and right arrows together turn Quick nave on and then off. Here's an interesting additional discovery. If I have two messages in a mailbox, all fields read properly on the first. If I down-arrow, I only hear one field. If I shift-tab back to the mailboxes table, then tab back to the messages table, I can hear all the fields for the second message. I tried this on a friend-s mac tonight. Until I had used her computer, she had only read mail in the inbox and everything read fine. She asked me to go look at something in her sent mail box. I did that and now her Mac behaves just like mine. Now I have two computers to fix. There is something happening which is caused by changing mailboxes in that table. I'm sure baffled. Thanks. Using Macbook air with Braille Sense On Hand
Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anyone had successfully paired the BrailleSense On Hand with a MacBook air. I'm pretty new at both pieces of gear but after looking at everybody's instructions, I came oh so close. So I just thought I'd see if any of you had tried and/or succeeded at doing this. Thanks. Re: mail weirdness
Actually, it doesn't work as it should for pop mail either. In mail preferences, I have checked the option to have erased mail deleted when I quit mail. It has done this once. Most of the time, when I finish going through my Email, I have to just do the Shif-command-delete to get the trash emptied. And I know plenty of people who think that Apple has broken many things in Mail with version 5, and not just VO-related stuff either. Solved getting icons to read when changing mailboxes.
Hi everyone! I figured this out today and thought I'd share it here in case it helped anyone else. Just in case it matters, I didn't make smart mailboxes, only regular dumb ones. When I'd arrow through my mailboxes table to choose a mailbox, then when I'd tab back to the messages table VO would only read one icon, rather than reading all that I'd chosen. First I figured out that each time I selected a mailbox, if I then exited mail and opened it again, that first mailbox would behave properly. Now I've figured out that when I go into the messages table, if I am on a message, ask VO to interact, VO says no text to interact with, then I uninteract with this nothing, then everything reads fine in that bunch of messages. It shouldn't be, and it's a bit weird, but at least I have a work-around. I'd be curious to hear from any of you who have multiple mailboxes set up. Oh, by the way, I'm using pop mail. Anyway, I hope this helps someone. Just about to give up!
Okay, for the past week I've been writing about mail issues from out of town. I'm still puzzled about the mailboxes and messages tables because they don't behave like some of you describe. But now that I came home, the good old Mail problem reappeared again. I can once again receive mail, but not send. I know this is a mail bug because I've now visited two different genious bars and they said they know of many people who have changed their email from whatever it was to a G mail account so it won't keep losing track of itself. I'm tired of recreating accounts and struggling to read subject lines for mail. I'm about ready to put this thing away until an update comes out. I so want it to work but I'm really frustrated. I don't think the losing track of my account server is related to VoiceOver at all, but the other stuff is, for sure. I feel so stupid when I read this list and see how much some of you are doing, yet I can't seem to get the basics out of my way so I can enjoy the more complex stuff. Okay, I did get Drop box to work. I found out that the Braille Sense OnHand is supposed to work with Macs once Mountain Lion comes out. I don't know. Is it not my time? I just wanted to write and see if there's anyone out there who understands where I'm at right now. I learned Dos. I'm quite good at Windows. I didn't have any trouble learning the iPhone. So why is Lion driving me absolutely insane? Thanks so much. Re: Just about to give up!
Dean, I do have the outgoing server set correctly, as verified mulpitle times. I've walked through the account setup with the company, repeated the process at the Apple store, and done it numerous times myself. The weird bit is that it will suddenly start working fine, and then will stop just as suddenly. I was able to send two messages this afternoon. Tonight I tried to send one more and it failed. I then wrote to myself and that one went. I am no longer touching any account settings, just letting it work properly or not. Mail worked fine when I was out of town for a week. Go figure! I just don't think this one's about me. Mail problems explained.
Okay, a bit of work ahead but I do feel vindicated on both accounts. First, regarding the problem, not being able to send mail consistently, as some of you suggested early on, guess I'm going to do what Apple wants and switch to imap because the pop mail is definitely busted somewhere. So as soon as I figure out what to do in Eudora on my windows systems, I'll be switching over and then I'll be able to send mail consistently. Second, the problem I've been describing since last week, VoiceOver not reading all the icons in the messages table after changing to a different mailbox? VoiceOver bug. So thanks for the help, Mark. Now I'll go learn about imap. And then I can get back to playing the optimist again and eagerly await the next update? Hahahaha! Thanks again. VoiceOver not always reading greeting correctly.
Hi everyone! I just started noticing this little annoyance in the last couple of weeks. In the VoiceOver utility, I have chosen my own text for the greeting after log in. My computer says Hello Veronica. I am here for you! Okay, I like a bit of personality in my machines! Well, for some reason, lately, more often than not, it just says VoiceOver on. Until the last week and a half or so, it always spoke my little creation, but now, most of the time it does not. Every once in awhile, it will read it properly. I don't see anything that I could have accidentally changed in the general tab of the VO utility, so I'm curious as to what may have changed. Any ideas? Thanks. Re: question for all voice over trainers: trouble interacting with items
Hi there! Well, I am not a trainer, but I thought I'd describe my difficulties understanding the interactive concept and see if it helps at all. I do understand your bookshelf analogy except for one thing. If I'm in the finder and come upon a folder name, I just issue an open command to go into it. If I don't want to open the folder, I just hit the arrow key to move to the next folder title. So, I didn't have to do anything there with VoiceOver. I'm really baffled by things like sometimes having to interact with a table and sometimes just arrowing down, as I do in the messages table in mail. So, what did I finally do for me? Gave up on trying to get the concept. I did better with rote learning. Interact here. Don't interact here. Try something and if it doesn't work, try interacting. I can't think of anything in the Windows screen-reader world that is like this. So the best phrase I was able to offer myself was this, some things just don't happen automatically in VoiceOver and you have to tell VoiceOver what you want it to look at. That's the only thing that allowed me to deal with what seems like inconsistencies in when one does or does not need to interact with something. It is kind of a goofy thing and I can see why some people would struggle. And you're right. The only real answer is practice, trial and error. See if it helps to tell your student that other people have trouble figuring this out too and we all just try things together. Maybe if your student can then relax a bit about it, not getting to that brain ache place trying to understand something, he or she may start practicing again. I know I've given myself breaks, just to let my own frustration wind down. And good for you for continuing to try to reach this person. Keep it up. Hope this helps. Veronica At 09:10 PM 6/3/2012, you wrote: The way I explain VoiceOver's interacting with an object or region is to think of what a sighted person does with their eyes when they want to focus in on a small region of the screen. It's also akin (sort of) to the zoom feature of a camera; when in zoom mode, you can only see certain elements at a time, but you can see great detail. Can't get out of Flash update!
Okay, can somebody please rescue me from Adobe flash update. I thought I was being so smart by not letting Adobe update automatically. But every time I go to YouTube, there's another stupid Flash update. Sheesh! Anyway, it's clear that there are some images that need clicking or something. I got so frustrated looking for the install that when my sighted husband walked by, I just let him click it. But now it says it's done. I can tab through radio button, let adobe update for me, learn more and then to a done button. But I can't seem to click on the done button. First I tried VO-space, then enter. Then I thought I remembered from an earlier discussion about mouse keys so I then tried VO-command-4 to route the mouse cursor. Then I tried shift-VO-space to click the mouse. It made a nice clicking sound, but didn't work. I think it just landed on "image" rather than a done button. I'm a little ahead of myself here in terms of learning mouse keys and the like. But boy, I'd sure like to dump this installer. Help! Thanks a huge bunch to any and all of you who can sort me out. No cheating now. My hubby is at the hardware store. Hahahaha! Thanks. Re: Can't get out of Flash update!
Thanks so much, Tim. I did eventually think of hitting the space, but wondered if I'd made the right choice there. When I did it, I landed back in the part of the installer where I enter my password. So I hit escape and then I was out, but the .dmg file was still on my desktop. I went in there and found a quit button and that finally made it go away. Then when I returned to the page in YouTube that I was originally trying to listen to, I had to refresh a couple of times before the song would play. Trying to recreate account as imap in Mail.
Hi everyone! Okay, I'm baffled. Thanks to the urging from many of you on this list, I'm finally making the switch from pop mail to imap. Don't even ask about life with Thunderbird on my Windows computer! Anyway, here's the Mac question. Oh, I am running Lion on my MBA. So, I deleted my pop mail account by hitting VO-space on the remove account button found in mail preferences. I then closed Mail and just for good measure, rebooted the computer. When I opened Mail, the welcome message appeared and it took me through the questions. Trouble is, there was no question asking me whether I wanted imap or pop. The first time I went all the way through the set up, it ended up as imap, but all of my previous mailboxes, messages, rules and signatures were still there. It didn't synchronize properly in that the new folders I'd created on the server didn't appear and I ended up with two sent folders. So I removed the account a second time and shut down the computer again. But again, in the account creation dialogs, there was no question about choosing imap or pop. Somehow I get the feeling it's not really deleting what had been there and I'm ending up with a bit of a mess. Any suggestions would sure be appreciated at this point. After all, this was partly why I was supposed to join the 21st century and switch to imap, so everything would just automatically appear on all computers. Hmmm, as I said, all the wisdom here is so much appreciated. I'll keep searching articles and such to see if I find some miraculous solution as well. Thanks again. Yes, I am positive that the account supports imap as I have it running on my PC now. Re: Trying to recreate account as imap in Mail.
Hi again! Okay, found the choice. In the second screen of the dialog, I discovered that VO wasn't landing in the start of the dialog. So lo and behold, I did VO-left-arrow and there was the button which said pop. So I changed it to imap. I then completed the account creation and all of my folders which I'd created on my pop account were still there. None of the folders I've recently created on the server show up except that second sent mail box. Is there a place deep down where previous activities have been stored? Should I manually remove all folders and rules before I remove the account to see if that helps? Is there another setting in Lion that I don't know about in terms of how it talks to the server? Thanks. Veronica Previous text: Yes, I am positive that the account supports imap as I have it running on my PC now. Discovery! re: trying to create imap account
Okay, I've managed to find another tidbit of trying to create my imap account. This time, VoiceOver actually said, "collapsed" on my inbox. So I expanded the inbox and there were all of the folders I'd created. As I arrowed through the mailboxes, I then found "sent, level one." It was empty. -- Continuing to down-arrow, I then found all of the mailboxes which I'd previously created during the pop mail days. Below those mailboxes is my second sent mailbox, which is full of previously sent messages. When new messages come in, they're being put in the second set of folders. Could this be because the program is set to keep copies of the message on the computer for offline viewing? I'm considering what might happen if I remove this second set of folders and all of the rules, just to see what happens. However, I'm a bit nervous about accidentally deleting folders from the server, which I worked hard to create. Any thoughts? Thanks so much. Still tuck getting rid of preview pane in Mountain Lion Mail.
Okay, feeling kind of stupid here. I thought I followed the directions I saw on this list earlier, for getting rid of the preview pane in Mountain Lion mail, but it didn't look the same on mine. I have a list of mailboxes and for each mailbox, a bunch of messages. In Lion, I'd just tab from the mailbox and I'd be in the list of messages, and could shift-tab back to the mailbox list. So after upgrading mail, I found myself on the list of mailboxes. I uninteracted with it and foud one vertical splitter. So I moved it to 100, but nothing changed. So I looked around again to see if I should have gone to the right of the messages, but just found a horrizontal splitter there. I moved it to 100 anyway, just in case. But I still have the new mailbox button and possibly something else in between my mailboxes table and my messages table. If someone can tell me where I went wrong, I'd sure appreciate it. So far my snooping around hasn't yielded anything brilliant. Thanks. ML Mail annoyances.
Hi everyone. Two things to ask about. I am using imap and have ML mail set to classic view. 1. Still scrounging around for what I goofed up from yesterday's message about getting rid of preview pane. In between the mailboxes table and the messages table I have three things, new mailbox, hide mail activity button and mailboxes action menu button. I assumed that if I moved the only vertical splitter I found to 100 per cent, everything would look familiar, but that hasn't happened at my house. Any thoughts? Second, yes, I can jump between the mailbox and message tables with Vo-J, but I somehow like the simplicity of the tab key. In addition, I find it easier when encountering the other thing that is apparently not yet fixed. 2. In the first mailbox I check, VO reads all of the status columns just fine, message subject, from, date. But when I change mailboxes, Vo just says image. I either have to turn VO off and back on to hear columns read properly, or tab and shift-tab for each message. How do the rest of you who have many mailboxes get around this? Thanks. In a message you’ve received, move the VoiceOver cursor over a phone number, email address, URL, street address, date, or time. Mail outlines the data as a field with a pop-up menu, and VoiceOver speaks “data detector.” 2. To open a shortcut menu that contains commands for using the data, press VO-Shift-M. Moving around in Messages table in ML mail.
Hi everyone! I know this has been asked before and I know what it seems like the answer should be. But I am sure stumped. I just can't seem to get to the first or last message in a table. Shouldn't it be Vo-shift-FN-left or right arrow on the Macbook air? When I hit this keystroke, it just goes to the horrizontal splitter. Re: Moving around in Messages table in ML mail.
Hi Rachel and everyone! Okay, interacting did make the home and end work. I then uninteracted in order to hear alll of the information as I arrowed through the messages in the table. I couldn't get option-up or down arrows to do anything though. I don't know about anyone else here, but boy I sure could use a good overall tutorial on using Apple Mail. I've managed to figure out that if I interact with the messages table, Vo doesn't read alll of the information like from, subject and such automatically, but uninteracting makes that work. But if I don't interact, there is the vertical splitter between the mailboxes and messages table so I'm constantly going back and forth. I'd sure like to find the most efficient way to just get through my email with the fewest keystrokes. Thanks so much. Re: So Why on Earth Does Mission Control Just Pop Up Unexpectedly With That Weird Noise?
Christine, it's because the command to get into Mission control is control-down-arrow. All it takes is to hit the control key to shut up speech, then hit the down-arrow a little too soon and there you are. Mission control is supposed to be a place where you can look at all of the different applications you have opened. If you go into system preferences and find the keyboard section, then choose the keyboard shortcuts tab, you can get rid of this shortcut and this annoyance will go away. As I remember the dialog was a bit twiddly fiddly for me when I did this, but I was much more of a beginner than I am now, which is a slightly more advanced beginner. Hahahaha! But when I'm on my macbook soon, I'll take another look at that dialog in case you have more questions about making sure you get rid of the right shortcut. Also, I think control-left-arrow opens the dash board. Hope this helps as a start, at least. Getting Mission Control out of the way.
Hi Christine and everyone. Okay, I'm on the MacBook now so I thought I'd share what I did to get rid of Mission Control's annoying unwanted appearances. 1. go into system preferences. 2. Interact with preference panes scroll area. 3. VO-right-arrow to the keyboard button. Note: You will pass by Mission control, which does contain some keyboard options. But these are for keyboard commands while you're in Mission control, so they're not what we're after at the moment. 4. Select keyboard and VO-right-arrow to the keyboard shortcuts tab and select it. Note: You'll pass by the keyboard tab on the way to the keyboard shortcuts tab. 5. VO-right-arrow till you hear "shortcut categories table. 6. On mine, Mission control was the first item in the table. If it isn't for you, up and down arrow till you find mission control. 7. Then VO-right-arrow past a vertical splitter, then you'll find mission control shortcuts table. 8. Here's where it got interesting for me. If you don't interact with the shortcuts table, you can up and down arrow, hearing checkboxes which are either checked or unchecked. But of course, you can't change the state of the checkboxes. Once you interact, you can uncheck these boxes, you just can't tell what you're unchecking. So I just kept tabbing and shift-tabbing back and forth, being careful that I didn't get myself into a strange table and uncheck some big thing somewhere. But when you're not interacting with the shortcuts table, you will see things like application windows, control-down-arrow. If you count from the top, knowing which one this is, just interact, uncheck that box and your life will be so much more peaceful. 9. If you stop interacting with the shortcuts table, you can VO-right-arrow to the place where you can decide how the tab key behaves. Or you can just close with Command-W and enjoy your Mac life. Anyway, there may be an easier path, but I hope this made sense and did some good. Safari questions with ML
Hi everyone! First, I thought I'd respond to the discussion on tables. The one I encounter is on my bank's web site. I can find the table and VO-right-arrow through each item. When I'm on the first column of a row, the VO-R command also reads the whole row to me. I can't figure out how to bop straight down a column though. But at least the information is all there. And I so appreciate those of you who reported the apparent bug here. I was beginning to think I was losing my mind. I just can't seem to quite figure out where I land and when I need to interact and when I don't. I don't remember having this issue in Lion but granted, I only used it a little bit because I was waiting for Mountain Lion before really getting going on this Macbook. The other thing I've apparently lost track of is how to quickly do a google search. I have figured out that if I open Safari and just stay on the tool bar, I can type a url or a search term. I then VO-right-arrow to the html content area where I interact. But it sure seemed to me that there was a keystroke or something that went easily into that google search. But I just can't find it anywhere. But boy I'd sure love a good tutorial and demo of really using Safari in ML. I did create an activity which turns on Quick Nav when I go into Safari, and I was afraid that this was what was messing up my browsing experience. So I will await further news and see how far I get in the meantime. But thanks so much to all of you who are so on top of all of this stuff. I look forward to doing my part to pay forward. Re: Getting Mission Control out of the way.
Mark, it comes up when you hit the control key to silence VO, as in starting to read the subject, date and all the info for an email message. If you then hit the down-arrow too quickly, intending to go to the next message, bingo! You've opened Mission control. I did this a lot in the early days of learning this keyboard. In trying to type something like VO-down-arrow, all you have to do is slightly miss a finger press and hey look! There it is again. In my case, since it was something I knew I'd never want, I sure couldn't see tripping over the thing, no matter how infrequently it happened. So that's my story. Have fun. Hi there! Less is right. There are other things you may or may not want to uncheck in that list. You'll find control-left-arrow, and F12, hich opens dash board, or at least it did in Lion. But there is also F11 to open the desktop. I like to use that one sometimes, so I don't uncheck that box. That's why a good old-fashioned snoop is in order here. Have fun! Organizing files and folders
Hi everyone! This discussion of setting up folders reminded me of a question I've had for a long time. Coming from the Windows world, when I'd go into my documents folder, I was used to finding the folders listed first, then all of the files in alphabetical order. It drives me crazy having the file and folder names all mixed up together like this. Is there any way to sort things so that I see folders first? Just curious. Thanks. Answering a FaceTime call when in another window.
Hi everyone! Okay, I think I must be missing something really obvious here. Earlier I was checking my mail, reading a message when a facetime call came in. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to get to the window where I could actually answer the call. I heard VO speak and it did say in the background, but command tab didn't go there at all. I had to go chase down the application in the dock and open it and hunt for the window. By the time I got there, the caller was long gone. Is there a quicker way to respond when a call comes in? Three running applications?
Hi everyone! When I'm sitting on my desktop, in the finder and I type VO-F1, it used to say two applications running. Then I'd go into the application chooser and the finder would be there. I did go into my user account and look at the log in tab to see what was checked. The only thing checked in there is iTunes helper. I think this has always been the case. I'm really puzzled. Any thoughts? Thanks. Re: Saving Files in TextEdit
This is one of two things that drive me crazy using Text Edit in Mountain Lion. Frankly, I'm going to look at a different text editor. I don't have any intention of saving my documents in icloud and since I can't change that default, it's now a royal pain in the you know what. I also don't like this new wizard or whatever it's called that appears when you open text edit. I tended to use this program for things like grocery lists and such and I just hate all the extra fussing around. Re: Text edit and icloud
Hi there! Happily, I also figured out that somehow when installing ML, it had changed my icloud settings. So once I went in and unchecked documents, as I don't want my documents in the cloud, Text edit started behaving nicely again. Yay! No opening with the strange wizard and saving defaulted to the documents folder. Yippee! Thanks. Re: Saving Files in TextEdit
Steve, when I unchecked documents under my icloud preferences, that weird wizard did indeed go away. This also changed the default save to documents folder, rather than icloud. Now, here's the thing I wish would come back. When the save dialog appeared, you used to be able to just hit command-d for don't save. That seems to have gone away. Bummer! I did send a note to feedback asking for this one back. Even my sighted hubby misses this shortcut. Thanks. ML .1, first look.
Hi everyone! Okay, I too was surprised by how my update went. I expected more of a download event. In any case, it was easy and I do in fact now have 10.8.1 on my system. The first thing I did was to try Safari. It seems the same, unfortunately. It still comes up on the tool bar and doesn't seem to automatically interact with html content like Lion did. Hmmm. If there isn't some little thing I'm doing wrong, bummer! I so want Safari to be smooth and sensible again. I look forward to hearing from the rest of you on this one. Thanks. Re: ML .1, first look.
Okay, Alex and Chris! Maybe we can figure out what I do differently than you do. I hope so because I really want this to work. So I'll give you one example. I open Safari and it lands on the tool bar. I typed in www.harryfox.com and waited. Then VO said, html content, then just sat there. When I interacted with the html content, it then started saying, home, contact us, etc. Never mind that I have my settings such that I'd like it to announce some information about the page when it loads. Once in that page, I then used command-L to go to another page to see if it behaves differently. I went to www.acb.org and saw exactly the same behavior. I'd love to hear what you guys do that is different. Thanks so much. ML .1 changed Mail again.
Okay, I'm going to go gray before this Macbook is done with me! After playing with Safari, I just thought I'd restart and see what happens. Then I thought I'd check my mail. Two things. Did anyone else notice that the first time you go into Safari and the first time you opened mail in 10.8.1, you heard that sound you get when sending mail or opening up Mission control? Anyway, after that, I went into Mail and boy does it look weird. I know we've had zillions of discussions about preview panes and all of that but I haven't see it look like this before. When mail opens, I'm usually set to classic view, which I still am. I have preview pane gone. Usually I come up in the messages table where I can up and down arrow through messages. It comes in and says messages table, inbox, 135 of 136. Okay, I'm sitting on message number 136. If I up arrow, I hear, horrizontal splitter. If I down arrow, I hear horrizontal splitter. If I Vo-left arrow to the mailboxes table, I can hear the current mailbox but none of the rest of them. I can interact with the table, but then I can't easily get to the list of messages where I used to be able to up and down arrow without interacting, getting to hear all of the column information at once. Does this mean that the preview pane is back? Guess I'm going to have to keep those instructions set right by the computer if every time the operating system gets a snack, preview is back. Sheesh! Now let's see if I can hunt those instructions down. Good grief! Thanks for any help. Hi Chris! First, thanks for such a nice exact description. And in case anyone else is following along, here's what solved it. I am using Mountain Lion, latest update. My voiceOver cursor was in fact set correctly in the VO utility. Here's what did make it work. Yes Chris, it was the set new tab function in Safari. Who'd have thunk it! I just figured that things would load faster if every new window didn't have to go to a page. Wow! But in fact when I did set it to go to my home page, bingo! Safari began interacting automatically. Boy this list sure earned its place in my book! Thanks so much. It would have been quite awhile before I got around to making that connection. And I had in the past created an activity to automatically turn on Quick Nav when I went into Safari, but kicked it out when I was trying to figure out why VoiceOver thought I had extra apps running. Maybe I can relax and put that back now. Anyway, thanks again. Really really appreciated from here. There's part of your issue. You need to first always always always! hit command+L first to focus yourself to the address bar. Then! type the address and hit return. Second off, do you have Voiceover set to automatically interact with html areas? Let's take a quick look. Go into your voiceover utility with vo+F8. Remember you may need to do fn+vo+F8, depending on your setup. Vo+right arrow over to the categories table and then hit the letter W. Don't worry, you don't even need to interact first. As long as you're actually on the table itself, you should be then able to hit W to jump to the web category. OK, vo+right arrow two times, and you should hear page loading tab. If it isn't already selected, go head and hit vo+space on it to do so. OK, now vo+right arrow 4 times. You should hear a checkbox to move the voiceover cursor when loaded. You need to be absolutely certain that this box is indeed checked. If it's not, hit vo+space to check it. OK, that should help but don't close the Vo Utility just quite yet. I wanna lookat one more thing, just? in case. go back up to the top of the window, and go to the categories table. I'm gonna assume that from this point forward you are using either Lion, or Mountain Lion. If you're on anything earlier, I E, Snow Leopard, Leopard, or Tiger, God forbid!... then you're not gonna have this option, so in that case, just hit command+W. You're done, otherwise though keep on following my directions. In the category list, again, make sure you're focused on it. You again do not need to interact, just be sure you're on it first. Then, hit the letter A, as in activities. Once here vo+right arrow until you get to the activities table. Again, no need to interact here. Just down arrow and if anything is in that table, see if you have an activity for Safari. If not, then you're good to go. Just hit command+W. If you do however, then read on. So, if you're still reading, then that tells me, you actually did have a Safari activity. Otherwise I'm expecting you read no further. So, make sure Safari is selected in the table. Vo+right arrow 12 times. You should get to a check box that says Web. Is it checked? If not, then you're good to go. Just hit command+W. If it is! checked however, then keep reading. If checked then there should be a set button just to the right of the checkbox. Vo+Space on it. Now again, locate the page loading tab and select it, then make sure the box to automatically move the Voiceover cursor is checked. Then go down to the very bottom of the screen, and vo+Space on the OK button. Then, finally command+W to close the Voiceover Utility. Now, If Safari was running, command+Tab to it, if needed, then hit command+Q to quit it. Now, reopen it. I know that sounds a little silly. Why quit it then reopen it, but trust me. You're right, it's probably not necessary to do, but I wanna cover all of our grounds just in case. OK, now hold it! Don't do anything! Don't start typing a U R L. First, hit command+L. Now, and only! now, type in your hairyfox.com Then hit return. Wait a sec, and let the page load. Now! vo around, and see what you get. Did that work? Another thing, too, you may want to do, is, In Safari itself, hit command+Comma, to bring up the preferences, then find your toolbar and interact with it. Vo+Space on general, then stop in

If it isn't already selected, go head and hit vo+space on it to do so. OK, now vo+right arrow 4 times. You should hear a checkbox to move the voiceover cursor when loaded. Re: ML .1, first look.
Hi Chris and everyone. Chris, when I type command-L, the next thing I do is to type in an address. Then it loads and says, html content and I must interact to get anything. It's just so weird that it worked once very nicely. And I have not had any experience at all with disk permissions or the repair utility. I'm going to toggle the new tab just for fun to see what happens. I'll go in and look at hiding the tab bar because I can't remember how that's set. Thanks so much, all of you, for batting this around with me. I really appreciate it. Before you hit command l did it take you to the html area? Do you know how to run a disk permissions and a disk verify/repair in disk utility? It honestly really might be worth trying as a very last resort. The only thing I am seeing that it seems a bit odd to me on is, why're you wanting to hit command+L then immediately try navigating? All command l does it takes you to the address bar. so, if you hit command+L, then before you'll be in the html content automatically, you need to first after hitting command+l type a web address, then hit return. If you just hit command+L then try moving without doing anything else first, then no, it's not! gonna take you to the html area automatically. Sorry, maybe I'm just slightly confused on exactly what your'e doing and how your command+L is connecting with this issue. As I said, if nothing else, might be worth running a disk permission verify/repair. I doubt that would have much baring, but it's probably what my next step would be. Here's something actually else to consider. Did you upgrade from a previous O S to ML, or did you do a clean install? If the former, then did you have this Safari activity for your quick nav set up in the previous O S before you upgraded? If so, then what might a happened is you may have part of the activity configuration from the previous OS lingerring around in addition to parts from ML, which of corse would make things conflict. If that's the case, I'm gonna suggest you try removing the activity entirely, then try to recreate it from scratch. Then! see if it works as expected, and actually, if you'd not done so already, I'd even go as far as to remove the activity, then even before! recreating it, see what it does if you then! with no activity intact, try it. This is, I agree, a bit perplexing. I'll do what I can, but short of that and running a disk permissions verify/repair, I'm sorry. I'm outta options striking out. Really frustrated with Mail! For real this time!
Hi everyone! I can't believe this issue is back. I'm so not happy right now. When I first got this Macbook air, I was using pop mail. I had a ton of trouble sending mail. It would come up and tell me it couldn't use the current sender. Everything pointed to a bug in apple mail that they said they couldn't duplicate consistantly enough to fix. The fix was to change to imap. So I put the macbook awy till I learned about imap and made the switch. It worked great for awhile. And now tonight, it's back to not being able to send again. I actually had to save my last message in drafts and go to my windows computer in order to send it. I know it's not a problem with my provider or my settings because I went through this way too many times. How can I count on this thing for email use when I'm traveling if this old buggaboo is back? Re: trying to update Flash player - problem solved
Well, I'm sure striking out trying to update flash player myself. I go to adobesystems.com and find flash. It comes up to the point where I find the download page and it shows the correct operating system. But clicking the download link does nothing. I land on a page where I have tried tabbing as well as just reading the page with VO and arrow keys. It says that the download should have started automatically, but it doesn't. Clicking the link for those who have trouble seems to get me nothing but that stupid, did you get what you came for? I'd love to know how the rest of you are getting it done. Thanks. Re: Really frustrated with Mail! For real this time!
Yes, yes, yes I am certain of my settings. I save the message to drafts and use a windows computer to send with the same settings. Sometimes I reboot the Mac and then it sends. The Mac is inconsistant and has been all along. I went to one apple store when I was visiting someone in Kansas City and was told that they were noticing everyone from their local cable company having trouble so they just set everyone up with a G mail account. It's an apple problem, not mine. I have redone this account way too many times and will not do that any more because it's pointless. There's a bug somewhere and it's just frustrating because I can't count on it. It's a pain to have to reboot right in the midst of just sending a quick message. Like I said, frustrating! Mail not always announcing unread messages properly.
Hi everyone! Since the update, I've noticed that when arrowing through messages in any of my mailboxes, Vo says unread on some of them, but not all of them. This is a completely new issue for me. Oh man! Well, just like last night's little trial, this one works once. If I want to use Safari without having to interact myself again, it's reboot time. So, reboot every internet session. Reboot every mail session. I tell you, I'm about ready to toss this Mackbook inAir our neighborhood yard sale. I'm trying to believe that the rest of you do serious and interesting things with your Macs, but this one is just driving me crazy. I don't know how to completely wipe the system on a Macbook air and do a clean install, as I have no external disks yet. I'm sure there's something I could do with a USB something, but I wish I could believe that this would sort me out. Till then, I'll head into my studio and play with my old system 9 Mac and my Windows 7 computer. Sheesh! Maybe I'll see if there's really someone at one of the bay area apple stores who might know something about VO like they claim. Anyway, thanks for listening. Yes, this one caught me for awhile too. Silly me, thought that an all signatures area meant that they could be used with all accounts. I was however, able to at least use copy and paste when getting the signature placed in the table for my main account. Once they're added to the proper account table, then they should show up in the signatures popup button. Hope that made sense. Re: using multiple signatures in mail?
Good question, Alex. It does seem silly just to in effect have a storage place for signatures that one can then drag into the appropriate account. It would be nice if they'd call that field something that gave the answer away. In any case, glad it worked. Re: Another problem with mail.
Kawal, I was really hoping that this would get fixed in the newest update. I noticed this problem starting with Mountain Lion. The weird thing is that today I noticed that after checking my mail on my Macbook, when I looked at it again in Thunderbird on my windows machine, it was also marked as read. So I can't figure out whether this is a mail problem, improperly marking messages, or whether this is a VoiceOver problem, not reading the status correctly. If anyone has figured this out, I'd sure appreciate the info so I could report this accurately to Apple. It makes reading the mail not very pleasant any more, for sure. Thanks for bringing this up here. Re: When might we expect a Voiceover Improvement in 10.8
The thing that disappoints me is that VoiceOver still doesn't automatically interact with html content when loading a web page like it did in Lion. It just doesn't feel as nice and seamless as it used to feel. I'll keep writing to apple but man, it would seem like the simplest of tries with VoiceOver by the development staff would show this. Bummer! There are some pretty basic fixable things, that I am very disappointed that Apple has not addressed in either update. And before I get blasted for posting anything negative on this board about Apple, yes, I have emailed Apple Accessibility, and yes, I have used a Mac for a long time. The one primary thing that seems like a quick fix would be getting Web spots to work properly in safari. I am still stunned that you have to now click VO command right bracket to go left or up a page, and VO command left bracket to go right or down a page. Anyone with the slightest bit of logic would have realized that this is reversed. Numbers is still very difficult to use if you have a big spreadsheet as there is no way to search for a certain cell in a large document. While the command to do this in Lion was bizarre at least it worked most of the time. Calling Apple Accessibility, I find it hilarious that the people at the specialized Voiceover department know nothing about numbers, and the numbers department know nothing about Voiceover. Pretty hilarious. QuickNav is still unbelievably buggy. Several times a day QuickNav just stops working, and I have to toggle VO off and on to get it to start working again. Just wanted to name a few and mention it would be nice to actually see a Voiceover improvement in an update to the operating system. Otherwise, what is the point of me taking the time to contact Apple Accessibility. They have gotten back to me every time which is very nice of them, but lets start getting some of these issues implemented. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Is it just me?
Hi everyone! I don't know, but somehow I've just hit a real low since upgrading my Macbook to 10.8.2 and my iphone to Ios 6. On the Macbook air, for the moment I'm primarily interested in doing some email and web surfing. And now the bit about things not interacting properly just makes it feel extra clunky. The email no longer identifying unread messages makes it hard to find things I'm looking for. Every update just seems to get a bit less slick than the previous one. With IOS 6 on my iphone 4S, horrible! First, the sound. They've obviously increased the highs and I can't stand to talk to someone on a Face time call now. The interaction between VoiceOver and other sounds is a mess. I've stopped playing Hanging with Friends because the sounds I'm used to hearing are not there and things are so sluggish. In my prowling around, I've found articles about interapp audio, but don't know if there's a relationship here. But I'm beginning to think there's something different about multi-block threading or something. But the way application priorities are set just may be messing up those of us with VoiceOver. I also wonder if they have EQ'd sound for the new iphone or something, but this is not good. Like I said, today for some reason I'm kind of feeling like stuffing these two devices in my closet. I'm a bit done with seeing devices junked up with a bunch of stuff I don't want and getting poorer quality on the things I do. I am going to send in a report about VoiceOver and Safari, again because one would think that a developer would notice this and someone would try and figure out the problem. It did work in Lion, after all. Same with the unread status in mail. Anyway, going to take a break and do something else for awhile. But I will be sending feedback to Apple. Thanks for letting me spout off here. Much appreciated. Thanks. Re: removing preview pane
Just one slight addition here. Make sure that you double-click the trackpad or else nothing will happen. When I did it, VO didn't have anything to say, but when you do VO left or right arrow, it will say different things than what you'd heard previously. And it turns out that I had disabled the preview pane, but it came back with the most recent update. So upon repeating these actions, surprise! VO began announcing the unread status of messages properly again. yay! Hope this helps.
