Yes, I have a small list of things I'd like to shut up. One is the data detecter and the other is menu extras. Once I'm there, I sure don't need to hear it every time I move.

yes, but, since it already reads the url, email address or sigature, why
oh wy do they persist in also telling us 1 has been detected, it's
driving me nuts. It's even more so in ml than in Lion. I wish we could
toggle this off.

Good Day:

Here is the relevant extract from chapter 7 of the VoiceOver Getting
Started guide, which is the last option in the VoiceOver help menu. Of
course, VoiceOver now appears to be more specific about which data has
been detected, but I think the instructions still apply.

Use data detectors in Mail messages

Mail can detect specific information or data in messages and make it
easier for you to use the data. For example, Mail can recognize phone
numbers and add them to Contacts, or recognize a date and time and
create an event in Calendar.

 1. In a message you’ve received, move the VoiceOver cursor over a
phone number, email address, URL, street address, date, or time.
Mail outlines the data as a field with a pop-up menu, and
    VoiceOver speaks “data detector.”
 2. To open a shortcut menu that contains commands for using the data,
    press VO-Shift-M.
For example, if the data detector is the URL of a website, you can
choose Open URL from the shortcut menu.

Hiall,
I was reading an email to find a guy's phone number. I found it, and
vo said "signature detected". I'd love it if the mac could
automagically put the contact info into a new ocntact for me, but I
don't know how to do it. How would I go about this, or any data
detector, like an event or email detection? I am running Mountain
Lion if that matters. Thanks.

Have a great day,
