Questions about switching from PC to Mac
Hey all, I'm a transplant from the viphone list here and this is my first post to MacVisionaries... be gentle. In the same way I used that list to educate myself before purchasing an iPhone, I'm hoping to learn some stuff about the Mac here since I'm thinking of making the jump. Seeing as how I have the iPhone 4, plan on getting the next iPhone that's released in the fall and own an Apple TV, I figured it made sense to migrate to the Mac... or at least entertain the possibility. I live in Ontario and, thanks to the assistive devices program, 75% of a new computer is covered every five years for those with accessibility needs. They recently started covering Apple products and my five years is up this fall so I was thinking of taking full advantage of this. With that being said, I have a variety of different questions to ask on here. I just wanted to know what the best way to go about it was. They cover a wide range of topics and I don't want to spam the list. On the other side however, putting them all in one e-mail would probably deter people from viewing certain questions they could answer because of other questions. So erm... I guess I'm asking what standard practice is around here for such things. I bet you guys get the same questions from new comers all the time so I don't want to be repetitive either. Thanks for any advice you can lend and I look forward to learning about the wonderful world of Mac! :) -Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Questions about switching from PC to Mac
Hello there, It's funny you mention flash because one of my big questions is browsing the web. I use sites like facebook, gmail, etc... on a regular basis and was wondering how easy/difficult they are to use with a Mac and VO -- I know facebook is a pain to navigate through with jaws on my PC sometimes. What web browser do people mostly use, safari? Also, I use twitter but have the qwitter client on my PC... is there any program for the Mac that is similar? I'd be very grateful for any info on these topics. Re: Questions about switching from PC to Mac
I just wanted to thank all for the info they've given me so far, it's much appreciated! I kind of disappeared, I know, due to a busy weekend. I will be picking people's brains over the next little while so please have patience with me too! Really appreciate the info about fb, gmail and twitter btw. :) I feel like I did before getting the iPhone, I was on the fence until I finally took the plunge... then was petrified for the first few days I was using it. After about a week or two though, I started learning things and taught myself... now I can't imagine not having one. It sounds like the same can be said regarding Macs? My biggest erm... hang-ups I guess... are that I run a wifi network from my current PC that my parents feed off of with a network cable through a router. I am totally clueless as to whether or not a PC/Mac network is possible and what it takes to do that, if so. I also have my programs that I use with Windows... I'm set in my ways... with mp3 players, mp3 volume amplifiers (I hate using soundcheck for CD volume normalization) sound editors to create ringtones, etc. I'm just very fearful that there will be something I take for granted now that won't be available after switching over and by then it'll be too late, you know? Thus the education... all answers so far have been quite helpful though so keep 'em coming and thanks! :) -Marc On 4/1/12, Jennifer Perdue wrote: > Hi I'm Jenny, > > I found it hard to make the switch at first, but with the people on this > list and some patience I wouldn't go back to windows if you paid me. Track pads
Hey all, Okay so my search for Mac info continues... Basically, this is a simple one. I've heard mentions of track pads before and, to my understanding at least, it seems like they enable mouse or touch screen-like navigation? Is this a fair assessment and if not, what do track pads serve to do? If so, how much can it substitute for navigation with the keyboard? Thanks in advance! -Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Re: Track pads
Is there any brand of track pads people can recommend? Using an iPhone, this intrigues me a great deal -- are all the gestures the same as on that device as well? Obviously my next question is what limitations does the track pad have when it comes to navigating through the Mac OSX? Mac to PC network -- is it possible?
Hi all, The subject describes my overall question but I'll provide some details so you have a better idea of what I'm looking at. Right now I have my computer upstairs in my room. If I got a Mac this year like I'm planning to, I'll still be living with my parents for another year and they use our home network to get the internet from my computer. Their PC is set up in the basement at the opposite end of the house so they're linked to my internet connection via network cable and d-link wifi router. My iPhone, laptop and fiancee's lap top all run the internet off of wifi thanks to the router as well. My question is, given all of these factors, can I create a network with a Mac replacing the main PC hooked up to the internet, which is what all other devices gain internet access from? Obviously I know my iPhone and Apple TV will connect but I just want to make sure that A) Any other non-Apple laptops/products can use the wifi and B) my parents computer will be able to share the internet connection via network cable if I'm using a Mac. The wifi signal just doesn't seem to be strong enough to reach the basement. One last question, I assume I'd need to buy a new router for the Mac to create a home network. If so, can someone recommend a router that works well with Macs? Thanks in advance! :) -Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Advice on switching from PC
Just a question that came to mind with the discussion about VM and Bootcamp here. I have a 64-bit version of Win 7 and jaws 13 -- will the 64 bit versions of those programs work on a Mac using one of those two methods? I wasn't sure if there were any compatibility issues that'd come into play there (I am also trying to decide to make the jump from Mac to PC still.) Re: Build the Mac Pro That You Wish Apple Released
This is also not an option if you're looking to be covered by ADP and/or ODSP in Ontario, Canada. You can only buy from a list of approved vendors to be elligeable for the government to pay any percentage of the computer's cost. Also, of course they're going to focus on the positives without advertizing the negatives. For me it sounds like more hassle than it's worth but to each his/her own. This article did get me to consider waiting until 2013 to get a Mac though. -Marc On 6/19/12, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Hi, I sure have. some company out of Florida I believe were making them. > It is straight up, no doubt about it, illegal to run Mac OS on non branded > Apple hardware. I don't know how much this relates to your problem with finder, but I cannot use it in column view with Mavericks. Much as you described, I just get a "Busy" warning the second I do something like, say, type in characters to skip to a certain file I want to access. Flash player in Mavericks
Hey all, Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, I've noticed that the flash player doesn't work on pretty much any webpage in safari unless it's set to auto play. The frame for the flash video will still be on the page but once I focus into the frame, there are no controls available to get it to do anything .This is with powersaver blocking a file or not, when I VO + spacebar, the frame disappears altogether. I also updated to the most recent version of adobe flash. Is anyone else having problems with this? 55.1 speakers w/ mac mini -- is there adapter available?
Hey listers, I set up my mac mini over the weekend and came upon a realization. While my P C had three speaker jacks to plug my speakers into, the mac mini only has one. As a result, I only have sound coming out of my right speaker at the moment. lol What I'm wondering is if there is some kind of adaptor available that would enable me to plug my speakers in properly? If so, could someone direct me as to where I should look? I am also in Canada so any links to Canadian sites people could provide would be greatly appreciated. How to add apps to the doc and searching on google with safari?
Hey all, Okay so the subject line makes it sound like these two things are very random but they aren't so please read on. I downloaded a couple of apps from the app store and want to add them to the doc -- I have found them in finder so they're there... but how do I go about doing this? I tried looking it up on google (and this is where it all ties in) as well but... ... is there some sort of trick to this? The reason I ask is because, whenever I search for something, I get the results with no problem. My issue is that when I go to select a result, it won't bring me to the actual page, instead it loads a page with different headings like "URL" and "5" -- it almost seems like it's just presenting the results page again but in a way that isn't presented properly. This is using the latest edition of safari, as I am using a brand new mac mini. Sorry if these are dumb questions with obvious answers -- this is my first mac and I'm still getting used to how it works. Re: How to add apps to the doc and searching on google with safari?
Thanks for all the help, I assume all apps downloaded from the app store automatically go into the applications folder? Also, I'll try using the web rotor menu but while using quick nav and navigating through headings that way, pressing VO + space on the result's link still brings up the weird page. Could quick nav be the problem? -Marc On 1/10/13, Alex Hall wrote: > I've never noticed this. I just move by heading, pressing enter or vo-space > or space on the item I want. Quick question: If I decide not to use adium after installing it, how do I go about removing it? Where is the program installed to by default on the computer and how do you get all the install files off the desktop? (Or is that actually where the program gets installed? Sorry to keep pestering about this but does no one know how to do this? I figure there must be a way but I've done a few internet searches and haven't come up with anything. Wavepad questions
Hey all, Is anyone else out there using wavepad for the mac? I used to use it on the PC and read somewhere that it is accessible. I downloaded and started fiddling around with it this morning -- while its accessibility is pretty good, there are a couple of things I can't figure out. How do I save a file under a different format? When I go to save my file, it sets it as a wav file by default and I can't figure out how to change that. Also, when saving as a wav file, how do you make it so you can customize the encoder settings? I know there's a pop-up menu and "auto" is selected. I bring it up and go to custom but then it doesn't let me leave the menu... or if it does, it goes back to auto as the selection. If I hit return on it, it will close and just bring me back to the main window without saving. Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks! -Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Accessible mp3/wav editor
Hey all, I am looking for an accessible audio editor that lets you edit and save in both wav and mp3 formats. I would also like something that allows me to separately change the speed and pitch in the app or another app that can do this, if possible. Wavepad has these features but I'm not prepared to pay for the full version to use them as I find the software to be overpriced for my casual use. Any suggestions? MP3 amplifier
Hi all, I found the easy music converter app thanks to a helpful member of the list here and was hoping luck could strike twice. Now that I can convert tracks from flac and other file formats easily, I am in need of a program that can amplify mp3 volume levels. I used to use mp3gain on the PC, which worked perfectly for this, but found that mac mp3gain doesn't actually amplify my mp3 files at all. Does anyone know of a VO friendly mp3 amplifier? I don't want an audio editor with an amplify option, I'd like something specifically for amplifying mp3 files. Re: MP3 amplifier
Sorry, I thought my original e-mail would be included in the last one. I am looking for a program that can boost the sound volume in mp3 files. On the PC, I used mp3gain because it worked better than soundcheck does in iTunes and amplifies the file itself instead of just when you listen on iTunes. You could also decide how much to increase the volume yourself on an individual track, so quieter ballads weren't louder than they should be. There's a mac mp3gain but I found it doesn't do anything to the files one way or another. I'm going to be putting some albums on an iPod shuffle for someone as a gift and want them to be at a similar volume level. I hope this makes more sense now. Thanks in advance for any help! -Marc On 4/26/13, Alex Hall wrote: > I'm not sure what the original question was, but if it's increased volume > you want, try VLC (videolan.org). Good speakers for mac mini
Hi all, I've been making due with my mac mini's internal speaker since my old PC speakers, a 5.1 set that hadn't worked properly in years, went kaput. After grieving the loss for months (not really,) I think I'm finally ready to move on and get a nice set of speakers. Now I throw it to you for any recommendations you may have. I do have a certain criteria though: - I listen to music... a lot. I want it to sound good coming out of these things. - I will most likely be setting this up to watch DVDs since, when I move out eventually, we'll be hooking up a TV as a display with HDMI. We're getting a futon so our office will double as a movie room. - I'm moving into an apartment building and don't want something too bass heavy because of that. I don't think the neighbours would appreciate it. ;) - The less space it takes up, the better. I am not opposed to 5.1 but don't want huge speakers since we'll have other stuff taking up space. - I don't want to spend tons of money on these. $500 is my absolute limit but I'd like to keep it quite a bit lower than that if possible. - I'm in Canada... any links provided would be even more useful if they're from Canadian sites. - I want something easy to set up on the mac mini... I don't want to mess with a bunch of adapters. I think that's about it. There's a couple of two-speaker sets from Bosse on the apple store but reviews are so varied that it leaves me unsure. Many say that it has tons of bass too so I am reluctant to put out the cash for one of those. I have had a hard time finding other options though so I am hoping some of you may have recommendations and/or experience that could help me make a decision. Either way, thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer! -Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Just to double-check, these speakers you're talking about should run on the mac mini with no problems? Re: MP3 amplifier
That's why I liked mp3 gain on the PC, it just boosted the file's volume without requiring a re-encode. I am lucky though, I can get wav files of these particular tracks, amplify them and then encode to mp3... so it works as a stopgap solution for now. I really wish I had something like what I had with mp3gain on Windows though. -Marc On 4/26/13, Chris Blouch wrote: > True, but each time you re-encode an mp3 the sound quality gets a little > worse. Re: described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions
I'm pretty sure it's up to the movie studio in a lot of cases to provide a script or audio track for described content that's made available officially through channels such as these. If online streaming/rental services don't have permission or rights to use these scripts or audio tracks, they're not allowed to create their own, as far as I know. I know with descriptive video in Canada at Cineplex theatres, they can't provide the service if they don't receive this content/permission from the movie distributors. I do know, however, that Disney in particular is starting to offer described content on their DVD releases. Examples of this include Toy Story 3, The Muppets and -- most recently -- Marvel's The Avengers. I'm not sure if this same feature is available on the digital copy though (its in the languages section of the DVDs.) Gestures on iMac?
Hey all, Excuse the ignorance, but I'm looking to get an iMac in the near future. I was under the impression that the track pad gave you the ability to perform gestures or navigate as if you were using an actual mouse -- not unlike the iPhone, for example. Last month however, I had someone come and give a demonstration with a MacBook. She admittedly preferred jaws but said that you couldn't do gestures like on the iPhone (which is something that disappointed her.) I'm just looking for some clarification as far as what I can do with the track pad on the iMac so I know what to expect. I know iMacs aren't bound solely by keyboard shortcuts but what function does the trackpad serve and what are its potential limits? External Blu Ray DVD/CD CDR or CDRW
Hey all, I am most likely getting a brand spankin' new iMac when they start shipping in December (I'm only going for the 21" so I'll be waiting a bit longer) and heard that neither version will have a built-in CD/DVD drive. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good external drive that can play Blu Ray DVDs and also play/write CDs and DVDs. I don't totally need to write Blue Rays and want to play them with the external at least but need to have CD read and write capabilities above all. Lower prices are prefered but any suggestions for something that meets the criteria listed above would be grately appreciated. Re: External Blu Ray DVD/CD CDR or CDRW
Whoops, my bad -- I got the dates mixed up. :P I do need to wait for an assessment from the government either way though. I live in Canada and the province I'm in has government programs that cover pretty much the full cost of any new computer with assistive technology. I am elligeable every five-years, pending assessment and approval. So that's when I am going to make the switch from a PC to a Mac... and when I'll need the sort of optical drive I'm looking for. -Marc On 11/1/12, Dave wrote: > Why are you waiting until December for the iMac if you're getting a 21.5" > model? Re: External Blu Ray DVD/CD CDR or CDRW
So um... no one has any recommendations at all? I don't mean to be a pest about it but I really need this for my iMac and have no clue where to start. As mentioned in previous messages, I am looking for an optical drive with Blu ray and CD read/write capability. I am assuming any device that can read/write blue ray can do normal DVDs just fine too? Any help would still be grately appreciated. -Marc On 11/1/12, Marc Rocheleau wrote: > Whoops, my bad -- I got the dates mixed up. :P > > I do need to wait for an assessment from the government either way > though. Monitors for the mac mini
Hey all, I am not sure whether or not to buy a new monitor for my mac mini but was wondering if anyone had some recommendations. I should be getting the computer in the next few weeks and have heard some of the benefits of some mac monitors having a built-in camera but wasn't sure if this was only with the iMac or if you could get separate monitors like this. I came across the 27" Thunderbolt display but A) I am not willing to spend that kind of cash on something I can't even see and B) It's way too big for what I need anyway. My fiancee is really the only person who would need this monitor so I'm looking to keep it relatively cheap and around the 20" range. Built-in camera for facetime, OCR or even iTunes gift card redeeming purposes would be nice too if that sort of thing exists. Any help/advice would be grately appreciated! I just want to make sure anything I potentially use runs smoothly with apple's ecosystem too. -Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Monitors for the mac mini
My main question is whether or not you can get a monitor with a camera. I know the 21.5" monitors with the iMacs have one and are equipped with a microphone too if I am correct? I was just wondering if there was any way of getting something similar for a decent price with a Mac mini, I guess. Sorry, I wasn't really clear in my first e-mail post to the list. -Marc On 11/30/12, Bill Holton wrote: > Hi. > Do you already have a monitor for another computer question is so why not > just get a keyboard/monitor a beast which? > On Nov 30, 2012, at 1:11 AM, Marc Rocheleau > wrote: > >> Hey all, >> >> I am not sure whether or not to buy a new monitor for my mac mini but >> was wondering if anyone had some recommendations.
