Re: Abisee?

2011-06-07 Thread Jon Cohn
IT sounds like from my recent readings that the fujisu scanners are well liked
by the OCR manufactures of Mac software.

I have been playing around with devInc pro office which is a paperless office
solution which costs about $150. It uses Abby as its OCR engine, but can
automate with any scanner that Image Capture works with. THere are also
special notes about fujitsu. Also Mac Update today has a "paperless" solution
inclculding support for OCR off a fujitsu printer. I didn't take time to look
at the package, but mostly I think you can demo the software that MacUpdate
sells.

If you can't find the offer write me at jonc...@cox.net and I will forward you
the flyer.

Best wishes,

Hmm, you can not purchase any version of Apple software. You can purchase the
right to use it. This is true with almost any software you "purchase". THough
I believe what you are trying to say and believe me we have heard you and at
some level I expect 95% of the readers of this list agreee is that you feel
more comfortable having a 30 cent disk that you own with Lion on it. I still
have 7 versions of MacOS X CD and DVD's hanging around my office along with a
few earlier versions.

But when you get down to it, it takes 2-3 hours to install from disk and then
download all the updates and then re-install the other applications. Hopefully
the e-partition (asTech Tool Pro calls it) will be safe, though Eric B has
indicated he has had problems in the past. In any case every apple with an
optical drive that can support Lion can also burn DVD's

Be warned there is a older version of Abby that is distributed in such a way
that it shows up as a folder in your applications directory. It also for some
strange reason has the word "Sprint" in its name. I had bad experience with
this one. The buttons did not respond to VO, but there was a command shortcut
to scan and OCR... But then when I clicked on that button the TWAIN driver that
came up with a window that was fairly inaccessible. Most sighted scanner
packages seem to bring up a preview of the scanned image before a complete
scan, and this screen generally is not very blind friendly.

Re: Itunes error message

2011-06-08 Thread Jon Cohn
Have you recently done a permissions fix in disk utility. I know folks that
swear this helps, but I have doubts that it really should.

I would expect that doing the following might be more useful but a bit
dangerous.

In terminal run the following commands.
1. cd /Users/
2. sudo chown -R

The second command will make sure that all of the files in your "Home"
directory are owned by you. The should be replaced with your Unix
user name. In my case it is "joncohn" so the second command would be
sudo chown joncohn joncohn

Ask you for your password. You need to be very careful with sudo commands as
they have full UNIX administrator privileges.

Also the sudo command will

Re: Boot camp questions

2011-06-09 Thread Jon Cohn
IN terms of boot camp, I am not the expert but nobody else has answered yet.

In the Utilities directory there is a program called bootcamp assistant .

When you run this program it will partition your hard disk and perhaps do a
little more setup.

At that point you will need to install the OS just as you would on any other
system.

After installing the OS there is one additional step to get all the drivers in
place which is done with the SNow Leopard disk.

To switch between MacOS and BootCap you can select the boot partition from the
control panel and that is 100% accessible.

There is also the possibility of hitting the option key at boot which will
bring up icons that are not accessible of all the boot partitions that are
currently available.

Re: Time update on network

The MacOs has the standard UNIX suite of commands.

ntpdate - set the date from an NTP server.

if you use ntpd you should ensure it gets autostarted via launch or rc init

ntpdc and ntpq - commands to query and control ntp daemons both locally and

I use to run ntpdc status 127.0.0.1 on login each morning to ensure my

Re: junk mail

2011-06-16 Thread Jon Cohn
Are you having issues?

First of all there is not always a junk folder. By default the Mac just puts a
flag indicating the message is junk, but leaves it in the inbox.

However if you enabled the junk folder in your preferences then command-6
should open the folder. Note: however that GMAIL has a "SPAM" folder which is
not (by default) linked to your Junk folder on the Mac. If you want them
linked which might get confusing since both hte Mac and Google can put items
in the folder and learn correctly or incorrectly from each other what to
expect as Junk.

So if the previous sentence makes sense and you do want to link Google's SPAM
with Mail's junk then do the following.

1. Find the SPAM folder and select it.
2. from the Mailbox menu find Use this mailbox for and select junk.

After you do this there might be a new folder in your google account with the
messages you had marked as spam. It is also possible that the "Mailbox
behavior" section of the account preferences has an option dealing with
local/remote storing of junk.

Ok, go into the mailbox list and listen for "collapsed" expand that folder and
see if the new one is there. By default MacMail puts the folder crated as a
sub-folder of the currently selected/opened Mail folder.

I believe you should be able to do most things in Safari. I haven't seen that
message this year. Last year I did quite a few Federal applications. Some of
the sights that are using the Monster based application tool did refuse to let
me go any further until I faked them into thinking I was running Firefox.
THere is a version of Firefox available for the Mac if you have enough vision

Re: resetting password on my mac?

2011-06-17 Thread Jon Cohn
Read the warning near the bottom before you proceed with this procedure.

There is an option when you boot from the DVD.

1. put DVD in computer while it is on.
2. Reboot the computer and hold down the "C" key until it starts to boot.
3. I believe that Voice Over will come on after a few moments if not then
start it with command-F5
4. Pick your language for the setup program (I recommend sticking with English)
5. In the "Utilities" menu you will find a "Change Password" option.

Note however: that if you use the Apple KeyChain to remember your Internet
Passwords this tool does not change the KeyChain password so none of your
KeyChain passwords including Mail, Skype, and web will be available.

Re: Setting priority and return receipts

Well, setting Priority is fairly easy.

. When composing a message click on the "customize header button" There is an
item to check in there for priority. I suggest using High priority minimally,
To get a return receipt there are actually two styles of return receipts if you
read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_receipt
which also will point out the associated RFC standards for creating receipts.
If you just want to drop a
"return-receipt-requested" header into outgoing e-mails, and hope the far end
replies (there is no standard that says tthey must reply) then an AppleScript
or Automation could probably be created to drop in the header and also send the
message.

user that started the program running. There are several programs that need to
be SUID so that they can have administrative powers on your computer, but any
SUID that is not expected should be tracked down to its origin to make sure
you do not have a piece of malware on your computer. Especially if the owner
of the SUID file is "root"

I am fairly confident this is just a incorrectly registered file that the
Macintosh Operating system uses if you enable remote control of your Macintosh
in the system preferences. I believe one of the Security updates that has come
out this year changed permissions on this file. Are your software updates up
to date?

Re: Adding RSS feeds via an OPML file

2011-06-23 Thread Jon Cohn
The terminal command

open -a Mail TheFileName

should do the same thing. And you can get theFileName by selecting it in the
finder and then typing command-c for copy. Then when you hit paste (command-v)
in the terminal the POSIX path of the file should be entered.

Oh, and the apple Script would be something like
tell application "Finder"
set aFileName to the POSIX Name of the selected file
end tell

tell Applcation "Mail" to open aFileName

With the full facebook client just one or two "clicks" and you can remove
Friend and/or application updates. I believe it might be an unlabeled link,
but if you click on it then wait a second a list of choices appear asking if

Re: weird problem with airport extreme

2011-06-27 Thread Jon Cohn
I once got this and it was resolved by rebooting the cable modem. If you have
COX they won't directly help you fix the problem because they don't support
routers. Also you did not perchance change where the ethernet cables are
plugged in did you? There is one place that is marked as WAN and it should
have the cable modem connected to that port.

If you need help send an e-mail directly to me at jonc...@cox.net

I probably won't be back on until 8:30 AM Eastern US time.

Re: Update on mac running hot, from bad to worse!

2011-06-29 Thread Jon Cohn
I wonder if you are having issues with one of the preference files? I looked
around on my Macintosh, and did not find anything in ~/Library/Preferences with
"spell" in the name. There is a "spell" directory within the library that has
your private dictionary. Perhaps if you move that directory temporarily to a
safe place and then try to get the spell check to go hot.

Esther also recommended that perhaps you want to turn off Spell as you type
option. This would mean you would not get blips or other notifications as soon
as you type a mis-spelled word, but does take that whole spelling check out of
the keyboard input stream.

I hope all of the above makes sense.

The last step in installing bootcamp is to insert your Snow Leopard disk into
the system while you are running windows. This should ask you to install the

Did you do this?

Re: Apple Mail or gmail, pop or imap

2011-07-09 Thread Jon Cohn
If you like to keep your folder structure of e-mails the same on all of the
systems then IMAP is the only stand solution. POP just allows scanning,
downloading and deleting of e-mails on your e-mail providers server. Actually
my first sentence is a bit off, IBM and Microsoft provide Domino/Notes and
Exchange/Outlook respectively which also synchronize items. Both Domino and
Outlook also provide synchronization of contacts notes, tasks and todo lists in
addition to e-mail. The Macintosh Address Book, Calendar, and mail program
have plugins that minimally support the Exchange protocols.

Now to your question of which to use... If you will always read e-mails using
the same client then it does not really matter. Only advantage to IMAP is that
if your computer dies your e-mail provider has a copy of every message. One
disadvantage of IMAP if you do not go into the deep configurations, is that
the Mac mail client will only download partial messages when it connects to the
server and then once you ask to read the message there is a usually slight
delay while the Mac gets the rest of the message.

Another case where you can use POP is when any secondary locations where you
read e-mail, you do not care about any messages other then the most current.

Re: Apple Mail or gmail, pop or imap

2011-07-09 Thread Jon Cohn
Two more quick notes specificallly about GMail...

1. In addition to the previously mentioned Tidbits.com article about using
IMAP with GMail, there was a more recent series of three articles about how to
handle large amounts of e-mail using the GMail web client. The Web client
updates things a bit too much, and by default it uses flash for uploading
attchments, but I sometimes do find it quicker then my IMAP client. It does
however highlight an area where the Safari / VoiceOver do not work well with
some dynamic elements. A great example is the "move" message in the when
reading a message. This brings up an edit box that I seem to only be able to
find when I turn off cursor tracking.

2. GMail does support a simulation of the Outlook protocol for use on Windows
5/6 version cell phones. If you are a user of Mobile Speak then I suggest you
contact me off list if you want to know how to configure this.

Re: complex networking question (double nating)

2011-07-15 Thread Jon Cohn
Scott,

I would suggest using the bridge mode on the Apple routers. Generally only
tunnelling will cause you issues, but any VPN will probably use tunneling. You
should still be able to block MAC addresses in one of the manual airport
controls even with DHCP turned off.

My problem with NAT is that the router needs to keep a mapping of all traffic
and on a busy network it will eventually decide to drop that mapping. So if
you are double natting then you are going to have twice the chance that a long
not very active session will get dropped by one of your routers.

Re: Stop Using Headset Annoying.

2011-07-15 Thread Jon Cohn
In the blue tooth system settings you will find a table of known devices.

Select your headset and hit the delete key.

I usually get to the blue tooth system settings by going to the bluetooth
status menu and selecting the last item in the menu.

Jonathan

Just for completeness there is another way of doing this...

1. Go to the system status menu VO-m twice
2. Use option and arrow keys until you find the bluetooth menu.
3. go through the menu and find your device
4. the last item in the device sub-menu will be remove device.

Best regards,

Jonathan

Auto start of bt sound devices.

2011-07-15 Thread Jon Cohn
Mark,

My blue tooth headset has decided to stop working on me, so I have nothing to
test with right now. My memory however is that there is a helper program of
some kind that is started when you select a bluetooth audio device.

Some possibilities

1. The volume / sound status bar item will allow you to change audio output if
it is selected with the option key. (I described this process earlier today in
my note about bluetooth but for the bluetooth menu.
2. You can use User Agent Appel Script to do this.

I got as far as turning on / off bluetooth on my mac using an apple script.
doing User agent scripting is almost like jaws scripting...

tell application "System Preferences" to activate
tell system events
selectmenu item "Bluetoot" of menu view
...

end tell

The above is not supposed to be a real applescript program, just an idea of
what would have to be in it. Just like in jaws there are ways to find all the
elements in a window. There is an example of this that is somewhere like
/system/library/applescript/userAgents/
but you don't need to look for it there, since you can almost jump to the
right place from the help menu in the AppleScript editor. If you feel this is
really beyond your comfort level but something that would make your Macintosh
life easier, I might be convinced to help you. :-)

In any case since I am not consistently reading my MacVisionaries feel free to
contact me offlist.

Re: can't get my macbook to stay shut down

2011-07-16 Thread Jon Cohn
I do not think this is your issue, but take a look at the following:

1. Open up the System Preference Pane for energy Saver.
2. Click the schedule button near the bottom.
3. Review all the settings in this dialog.

Re: getting back old emails

2011-07-16 Thread Jon Cohn
This depends on if you are using IMAP or POP for your mail protocol.

Check in theaccounts section of mail preferences if you don't know. Also when
setting up your gmail did you follow the instructions from the tidbits.com
article that Esther and I have referenced before?

Best,

Re: getting back old emails

2011-07-16 Thread Jon Cohn
OK> In your list of mailboxes you should have one that is called the name of
your g-mail account. (use the VO cursor not the arrow keys to find it)

Make sure this box is open .

Below that you should find a folder with sub-folers called either "Google Mail"
or "Gmail". after expanding that folder you should find a few folders.

Perhaps Bin, Starred, All, Important

The All folder should have every mail item that has not been deleted from the
GMAIL account. Once you find the messages you are interested in, you can move
them where you want by using the messages->move menu.

Jonathan

Re: setting boot options before restart?

2011-07-24 Thread Jon Cohn
1. This is not really new to Lion.
2. There is the unix "reboot" command and there is also another command line
commmand that supports configuring next boot options.

But I believe that the command-R boot is almost like the C boot, except it will
boot off the restore partition in your hard disk The Restore partition has a
directory with boot options and a compressed filesystem containing a minimal
set of Lion applications including VoiceOver.

Scripting functionalities ...

2011-07-29 Thread Jon Cohn
How much have you actually looked at AppleScript? The Voice Over set of
commands just allows you to script the various VoiceOver functions if you want
access to the menus or different graphical widgets an application that has been
available in the Macintosh environment longer then VoiceOver has been around.
I have not seen anybody try to merge the VoiceOver scripting and the UI element
scripting, but doing this should give you the same level of control that jaws
scripting gives to jaws users.

OK. 90% of the items you listed can or should be able to be done with
Hotspots. I wish hot spots were a bit more configurable:
1. ability to change some hot spots when application or focus changes.
2. Ability to have the HotSpot indicate only what changed when tracking is on.
persistence in hotspots when used with AREA regions of a HTML 5 page.
 1. I an not quite sure about Skype chat, since I have only used it a couple of
times, but for most chats turning off cursor tracking (which I would expect can
now be done on a application basis ) should solve most of the issues. I find
the jump command often does the right thing (though not innumbers)
I don't have any documents with footnotes / endnotes, so I can not truely
discuss these, again since a foot note is a reference to a specific spot in the
text, using the jump-to function might make sense.

 .

Jonathan

So an interesting request to the iWork accessability team would be to have VO-J
jump from formula to table. Though it might even be possible to do this with
an apple script.

Re: custom sounds?

2011-07-29 Thread Jon Cohn
Yes, you can select play sound as one of the items in the Mail rules. Just
select add new action and then there should be a drop down for play sound.
Once you select that a second drop down will appear with the sounds in your
library sounds directory. THere might be a browse button too, but I am not
sure.

Re: Option click?

2011-07-29 Thread Jon Cohn
I assume you are talking about getting extended options in the bluetooth,
airport and other status menu bar items?

I do this by the following process:
1. Hit vo-m twice to get to the status menu items.
2. Make sure quick nav is turned off.
3. Hold down the option key with your left hand and use left and right arrow
keys until you get to the menu you want extended information on.
4. Release the option key and use the down arrow key.

This provides signal strength information in the Airport menu, a selector for
input and output sound in the sound volume menu, and bluetooth diagnostics and
hardware addresses in the bluetooth menu.

I think that is an option with the option key. :-) though I also believe that
Esther's solution might be a bit easier to control.

Re: just curious

2011-07-30 Thread Jon Cohn
iTunes gets updated anytime there are interesting new features for iPhones or
new media types or a security hole is found. The problem with iTunes right now
is that it has to manage too much...

1. Sync music, contacts, photos, home page, and applications to every type of
iPhone and iPod touch.
2. Manage song / music / application / iPod / Mac University / TV showpurchse
and download.
3. Act as a player for all the above media types.

There are some rumours going around that iTunes is being re-engineered as
separate programs or perhaps just completely being rewritten.

It really doesn't make much logical sense that you go into a music player to
control application installs and refreshes to iPhones,so I could very easily
see them migrating this code out of iTunes and into iSync (does iSync still
exist in reality?) Once upon a time iSync was used to push bluetooth contactts
to your phone.

Re: mail filter

2010-09-08 Thread Jon Cohn
In the accounts section of Mail Preferences there is a "e mail address" field.
Setting this will change what happens with replies. Note: some SMTP mail
servers (the systems that send mail out) limit what you can place in the from
line. Google for example only lets you use your gmail account unless you reply
to an e-mail from the non-gmail account to prove that you own the address.

Wait a while and try again. The Apple always says try setting the password
when the login fails, even if the mail server says I am too busy to handle your
login, or account locked because of too many connections to account.

If problem continues for more then 1 hour, and there is no friendly person to

Re: something I'm contemplating

2010-12-03 Thread Jon Cohn
My son has one of these. there are occasional updates, but there are no apps.

Also, I am fairly confident that the radio does not have voice over, so when
using that you won't be able to have the radio tell you which freq. you are
listening too.

The size is quite small compared to my 5GB ipod classic First Gen... though it

Re: nifty trick for jumping to top or bottom of message list in mail

2009-12-25 Thread Jon Cohn
I have often used the JUMP mode within voiceover.

If you type VO shift J while in a table. This puts you in jump cursor
mode.

Jump cursor mode gives an error for almost every key, but the
following keys work.

Left move to the begining of the colum
right move to the last column.
Up move to the first visible row (but stay in the same column)
shift Up move to the very first row (again stay in coumn)
I bet you can guess what down does...

I think they only other key in this mode is escape which will drop you
out of this mode.

I hope all my christian friends are having a wonderful holiday.

Re: Face Book Light

2009-12-25 Thread Jon Cohn
The chat is accessable w/ VO if you change from Group to DOM mode. For
whatever reason, DOM mode works much better for HTML content that is
getting updated. This might be one of those places where using
AppleScript with VO might make sense. If there is a call back when
windows change that is available to VO, then one could change the HTM
L navigation mode appropriately rather then assigning it to a hot key.

Re: how do I share my ethernet connection securely?

2009-12-28 Thread Jon Cohn
I believe that the macintosh's firewall is advanced enough to be able
to support this ability, but the simplified interface to it provided
by "System Preferences: is insufficient to do this.

Your choices are:
1. Look at a separate piece of hard ware (ie Airport Base Station ) or
other wireless router. I think you might even be able to manage with
the Airport Express.
2. Install software that controls the firewall ie I believe there are
at least three packages out there. I have never reviewed them.
3. Learn the configuration file for the internal Apple Firewall and
configure as you feel appropriate. Tidbits.com's Rich Mogul had a
long piece about the Leopard firewall changes shortly after Leopard
came out. I have not specifically seen any discussions about Snow
Leopard changes to the core firewall.

Re: bluetooth headsets for apple products

2010-05-19 Thread Jon Cohn
I use and am quite happy with a Jabra Halo headset. There are a few reviews on
line. In terms of voice over however, I can not really recommend its use.
This is I believe because of a Apple issue.

Essentially the problem is that the connection drops to save power and then a
half word of text does not get spoken as the BT connection is reestablished.
It works great with my Windows Mobile phone and CF MobileSpeak 4, as a
listening device for iTunes, and for Skype.

Best wishes,

Re: Chat on the Mac

2010-05-22 Thread Jon Cohn
I don't Quite a few folks on the list use a dedicated multichat program. There
is also a area within the iChat application to tell it to read aloud new
messages using the default TTS. 1. Start iChat
2. type command-, to bring up the preferences pane.
3. Interact with the toolbar and select alerts.
4. There is a drop down box to select an event. Choose"Message received"
5. Find the check box speak an announcement and check this.

I believe the program "growl" also can watch for events in various applications
and then take actions. I have this as a item to perhaps look into, but it is
pretty low on my list right now.

Best wishes,

You might want to see what google can provide you for address syncing if you

1. There is an option within the Apple Address Book preferences to sync with

Re: naming groups in address book

2010-05-23 Thread Jon Cohn
Frank

Selecting the rename group option actually works, though you have no feedback
that it is working.

Try this...
Select rename group ]
2. type a right arrow several times and then hit the delete several times.
3. Type the new name
4. quit address
book
5. start address book.

I am pretty sure you will find that your changes have taken place. This worked
better the last time I tried this, which might have been in Tiger days.

Re: Audible.com site with safari 5

2010-06-10 Thread Jon Cohn
I have not tried either s5 or Audible, but a couple things to try:

1. Turn off cursor tracking. Some sites do a lot of javascript when the mouse
moves over a specific point, or the insertion point changes. This can wreck
havoc when all three track each other. Facebook is on my bad behavior list
because of this.
2. I believe I heard something about disabling javascript could prevent the
crashing. (which would make sense if the statement above holds.)

Note: if you disable cursor tracking, then you need to ensure that you move
cursors where you want them to be.

Best regards,

Jon

Re: Browsing Address Book

2010-04-18 Thread Jon Cohn
I have no idea what the standards are for export / import in CSV... But with
regard to your problems with being unable to read the columns.

You can either interact with the column or use regular arrow keys (quickNav
off).

You should also be able to type a string match when the Keyboard focus is in a
column.

There is always the "mv" command in theterminal. I don't believe you can move
directories, but there might be a "-R" or "-r" option that would do that.

Bring up terminal, and type
man mv
and the command will be described for you.

file sharing setup.

2009-08-09 Thread Jon Cohn

I just set up file sharing and noticed that the buttons are mislabeled
if you attempt to customize what is shared and to whom.

If anybody has a need to know about this let me know and I can walk
you through the steps.

By default when you turn file sharing on it is only enabled for
computers running the AFB protocol and for the "public" folders under
each user. This can be adjusted by you to allow SMB (Windows style)
file sharing. There is also the ability to allow NFS, but I think
this only works when using the Command Line Editor. NFS is the file
sharing used by almost all varieties of UNIX including Linux.

Re: Questions about mac mini

2011-08-29 Thread Jon Cohn
My memory about the new mini's is that the server version and the low-end
version do not have a GPU and that the mid-tier version does have thededicated
graphics processor.

So it might be that the only the medium tier mini has issues with no display

If folks who bought mini's after Lion came out send me an e-mail

Re: getting MBP ready to sell

2011-08-30 Thread Jon Cohn
There is one other option for deauthorization of computers.

If you have five (the max) authorized computers then you can deauthorize all
computers in the Apple Store. This is described in the iTunes help.

I hope this helps.

So the process of making a computer safe for resale should be.

1. Make a backup with a cloner, and verify the cloner disk will boot the system.
2. Migrate software and documents to the new system as you feel appropriate.
3. Deauthorize iTunes and other services from the old computer.
4. Reinstall the OS with a jump to tools->Disk Utilities and reformat the
primary partition using a write over deleted items.
5. Sell your old system as you prefer.

Note: now that Apple is buying back some systems at its stores, it might be
that they could handle all this for you.

Re: difference quicklook and preview?

2011-09-01 Thread Jon Cohn
Quicklook can also be used to listen to audio files...

When you quicklook an audio file the playback will be paused if you switch to a
different application on the Mac and then will resume when you jump back to the
finder. Quicklook can also be used for HTML files in exactly the same way as
PDF's. THis is fine for reading, but does not allow any editing and has only
primitive controls.

Best wishes,

Re: iWork Accessibility

2011-09-01 Thread Jon Cohn
It is fairly straight forward in textedit to do non-stylized changes ie there
are shortcuts to Bold, Underline, Italic, Center, Justify, increase font and
decrease font.
(Most of these shortcuts work in any richtext based Macintosh application) What
pages does is set up or allow you to setup several styles which modify all of
these parameters at once. I am not sure if any of these styles will map into
the HTML H1 - H6 header tags that are so useful in skimming web page content.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Subscribe to Vision Australia podcasts [was Re: How do you use autocorrect/fix a mispelled word]

2011-09-01 Thread Jon Cohn
There are a few options. The easiest is to use the Subscribe to podcast in the
advanced menu of iTunes.

If you goto the feed: url in Safari, then you should be able to review the
podcast there. there will also be a subscribe in mail button on the Safari
page. If you subscribe in mail then the a/v material in the podcast will
appear as an attachment to the text of the RSS blurb.

Best wishes,

Re: VO, what I have written?

2011-09-01 Thread Jon Cohn
I generally use VO-L (read line) some of what you want to use will depend on if
you are interacting with the input field. If you are not-interacting with the
input field then VO-F3 should work. If you are interacting then the commands to
read from beginning will give you the entire field. (VO-B or two finger flip
up)

Re: Disabling start up programs on the Mac

2011-09-02 Thread Jon Cohn
I am afraid you will have to be a little more specific.

1. In Lion by default every program that was running when you logout or
shutdown the computer will be restarted.
2. You can mark programs to start at login via the DOCK and/or system
preferences.
3. Several utility programs are started by init / Launch / cron including file
sharing and printer queueing systems.

Which of these are you trying to work with?

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: putting mail into folders

2011-09-03 Thread Jon Cohn
OK, just to make sure you are using GMAIL right?

If you followed what appears to be current best practices and configured your
systems to retrieve e-mail via "IMAP" and not "POP", then where ever you create
the folder it will appear automatically in

a) Your GMail WEB Client
b) Your iPhone / iPad / iPod touch
c) Your Macintosh
d) Any IMAP based e-mail reader for the PC.

What is more, if you can easily distinguish your college mail then you can
create a filter in the GMAIL web page so that mail will automatically be placed
into your college folder as it comes in.

This is just the possibilities, either Ester will come in and fill in all the
details or you can ask additional questions about your specific configuration
and we can help from there.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Hardware Growler, was more system sound feedback?

2011-09-10 Thread Jon Cohn
The two sets of instructions do exactly the same thing, they modify the
properties file of the application which is sorta kinda like the registry in
Windows, though by no means as global.

So using the defaults command adds a new item to the appropriate plist file
using Apple standard operating procedure and editing the plist and adding in a
couple of XML codes will do the same thing.

There is also a program in the developer tools that allows you to examine and
edit a plist file as though you were perusing an Outline.
Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Such a small selection of sounds

2011-09-10 Thread Jon Cohn
I believe you can also put MP3 files in your sounds library with success if you
don't feel like converting them. The worst thing that could happen is that the
sound file does not work.

In snow Leopard, I usually select a chunck of text and then do a contextual
menu select and find create task. I am not sure if this is a mail contextual
menu, or a general text one.

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-10 Thread Jon Cohn
I don't believe you need to actually use lynx for this...

And if you don't need lynx then you don't need the developer tools and a UNIX
port program (macport and/or fink). The Macintosh has built-in for the command
line the curl command that can take a ftp and/or an http request and download
(and possibly upload) a file or set of files.

So you should be able to replace the lynx command with a slightly different
curl command. Also, AppleScript has had for over 10 years the ability to
directly retrieve URL's in the standard suite.

Hope this helps and best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: strange mail behavior

I find that sometimes a disclosure triangle is "part of a group" (like in the
mailbox list in Snow Leopard. In these cases, you need to interact with the
group before the right arrow will work. (It might be that there are ways the
developer could have the group just feed the arrow keys to the disclosure

So the VO command to toggle a disclosure triangle is VO-\

Re: creating extended journal encrypted partition on ntfs drive

Does disk utility not understand the partition map, or can you not find the
option to partition the disk?

Usually disks have 2 or more icons in Disk Utility, and only the first one has
a tap to modify the partition table.

Re: This has brought up library questions

2011-09-11 Thread Jon Cohn
OK. Information in

/System/Library is only supposed to be Apple items.
Items in /Library/ are items available to all users of the computer.
Items in /Users/myUserName/Library are generally only available to myUserName

If the computer is only being used by the owner, then there is no real
difference between items in /Library and items in those in your personal
Library. In some cases like sound files it will search the 3 Libraries in
order (I don't remember the order) and use the first file it finds. I believe
with plist files like preferences it will read in all the files and have the
later files override settings from the earlier plist files.

Re: VO reading message list?

2011-09-11 Thread Jon Cohn
Some Snow Leopard folks actually deleted all the fields in the messages table
and then re-added them in order they wanted. Tables including this one have a
column header that a sighted person can see, and that VO's trackpad commander
can access if you go to the top of the column with a single finger. When you
are in the column headings you should be able to drag and drop them in the
order you want. I would try drop before / drop after commands. VO- less and VO
greater respectively.)

Re: Tax Program

I reviewed some of our taxes in Turbo Tax last year using VoiceOver. I did
very little data entry, so I am not sure about how well that works, but
TurboTax 2010 certainly was navigatable using VoiceOver, and our family will be
using the 2011 version too, so I can report back on that in a few months.

Re: making a website on the mac?

2011-09-11 Thread Jon Cohn
Sorry for the additional post, my last one was a bit unclear.

There is a program called sandvox sandbox but the b as in bravo has been
changed to a v as in Victor. This program seems to allow some interesting HTNL
editing, but I did not spend much time on it. You can download it for free,
and I believe it is shareware.

Re: moving mail messages to new system

2011-09-13 Thread Jon Cohn
On Snow Leopard, the mail messages are stored in the "~/Library/Mail" folder.
This folder defintately has all of the e-mail messages and I am fairly certain
that the Database that indexes the folders is also stored there. If it is not,
then it would be in the folder that "Application Data" folder in your Library
folder. Some programs use sequences like "com.apple.mail" as their names.

Re: parallels?

Version 7 just came out and I have seen no mention on the Blindness lists about
it, so it is probably too early to say. Earlier versions of Parralel did not
allow display chaining or as I understand it, and so were useless for jaws
users.

1. If you hold down the control key during boot, I believe it will first eject

Second, Don't you have Lion installed? perhaps you can use the Lion recovery

Re: smart mail boxes

2011-09-17 Thread Jon Cohn
Well, there are actually "Smart Folders" in Mail app directly too. They are
just a way to merge several Smart Mailboxes much the way that the Inbox folder
collects all of your different Inboxes into one view. If the "Smart Mailboxes"
allowed a bit more control in their selection criteria then you would not need
to have Smart Folders.

For example if you want a grouping of all unread e-mail messages from your
Address Book groups friends, Interesting People, and Family that are older
then 3 days. You have two choices:

1. Create 3 separate Smart Mailboxes 1 for each group, and then merge them
together into a smart folder.
2. Create a Smart Group in your address book contain all members of Friends,
family and Interesting people.
2. Create a smart mailbox for the smart group and unread and received more then
3 days ago.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

If there is a command line interface to compress the files but no GUI and the

Re: finder document, what is this?

2011-09-17 Thread Jon Cohn
It is a document that the finder does not have a translation to describe what
it is. Generally every application has a "plist" file within the application
that lists file extensions that the application supports and also gives a
descriptive name to the file extension. This is how Word documents get
associated with the .doc extension.

THere is a command line tool called file which might be able to tell you what
kind of file you are looking at. The file command looks not only at the
extension, but also the first 100 or so bytes of the file looking for a "magic"
token describing the type of file.

The file command is a standard UNIX/Linux commands.

Jonathan

Well, this is not exactly what you want, but default folder X is supposed to
allow you to have keyboard shortcuts and additional neat features in the file

Re: Mail questions

2011-09-19 Thread Jon Cohn
Are you running Snow Leopard? I don't know theconfiguration of signatures
for Lion.

To create a folder there is a button at the bottom of the list of folders.
Clicking this button is the easiest way to create a folder. I believe you can
also create one using a contextual menu on any folder. The match patter for
items with a completely blank signature would be "Subject" "is equal to" ""

Where the last item would just be a blank entry. (hit command-a to select all
and then hit delete)

After typing a bit of a name I stop. Voice over then announces "new window" I
then make sure quick nav is turned off and just use the down arrow key. Also,

I have had Snow Leopard ask me if I want to apply rules to the currently active

After creating the rule there is also a menu around I think in the messages

Re: Recording system audio and microphone with audio hijack pro

2011-09-25 Thread Jon Cohn
Actually if you are going to set it up as a key stroke, you might want to go a
little more complicated.

property RunState

if RunState is equal to "stop" then
tell application "AUdio Hijack" ... .. to run
set runState to "running
else
tell application "Audio Hijack" to stop recording ..
set RunState to "stop"
end if

Note: I haven't tested this. Once you have this checked then save it as a
compiled apple script and then assign it to a key.

Then hitting the key will toggle the state of recording.

The property field at the top of the applescript says to remember the
information between separate runs of the program.

Best wishes,

I'm looking for instructions how to set up hijack pro to record both

Does anyone have any instructions how to do this or any link to any
