My son has one of these.  there are occasional updates, but there are no apps.

Also, I am fairly confident that the radio does not have voice over, so when 
using that you won't be able to have the radio tell you which freq. you are 
listening too.

The size is quite small compared to my 5GB  ipod classic First Gen... though it 
is still big enough to have a display and a "wheel".
