A question about iTunes syncing

2012-07-27 Thread James Malone
Hi there folks. I am about to download and install ML here on my
macbook, but I had a question. If an iTunes library gets erased, but
you still have all the stuff on your iPod, is it possible to make it
so that the stuff goes from your iPod to the iTunes library instead of
the other way round? Sure I can backup, that's no problem. Just
wondered if it could be done.
Cheers.

Installing Drivers after installing via Bootcamp?

2011-06-29 Thread James Malone
Hi folks, yesterday I decided to install Windows on my Mac Mini. The
installation itself went smoothly, but my screen will not display when i boot
into Windows. I assume this has to do with my screen drivers. Anyway, that's
not the issue. Seeing as I don't have a screen that a sighted person can read,
how do I install the Windows drivers on to my Mac?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
James

Yeah I did, but how would one be able to interact with that

for whatever reason, seeing as even the most basic screen opperations
can be done without drivers. Therefore, I can't get anyone to read it

Re: [Bulk] Re: Will It Be Easy To Install Lion?

2011-07-08 Thread James Malone
Not trying to screw round with anyones hopes here, but I heighly doubt
it will be out today. I'm thinking next Thursday (14th July)
I could be wrong though, at which point you can all point, laugh and
all that. If you have one on hand, I would personally burn it to a
blank external HD, and do it that way. Reading and writing marginally
faster. However, you could also burn it to a DVD in case you should
lose your HD or otherwise. Voiceover should function as previously in
earlier installs, I see no current reason why it shouldn't. Make sure
that you have your favourite beverage on hand, and go! :)

Re: Porting qwitter to mac?

2011-07-10 Thread James Malone
While I appreciate the work you are doing there Jonothan, I still
don't completely see the need for something that doesn't display
tweets as you read them, and focus on the blind comunity. I for one
refuse to use blindness apps for the most part, because it sort of
makes us look stupid. Its almost like saying,
"Hey, apparently blind people can't use my twitter app, because there
is one little checkbox that isn't where it should be and its not
described enough, therefore I need to waste pointless time looking
then changing it, just so there can be that perfect kept in a shell
zone once more."
and I mean really, does anyone really care these days if your tweeting
at work? Hey, I know heaps of people that do this, and most people
aren't stupid. As long as you get your work done and can have a good
tweet, then why not. Hell, apple will probably end up integrating a
Twitter client into Mac OS at some stage. Anyway, rant over.

Re: [M-A] Lion being released tomorrow july 20th

2011-07-20 Thread James Malone
Well in all fairness, the site is what it is, roomers. As for what
time, its here when its here. For us Australian's, that will be
tomorrow, July 21st. I might do some sort of podcast, but someone will
probably beat me to it. I won't be able to try it until at least later
tomorrow afternoon, unless I be a rather sad person and get up early.
However, being in pecific time and all that, I can tell you now that
it would be almost pointless. Besides, what's a few more hours,
really? It will be nice when all this crap about release dates and
such are over. If you look at what Apple seem to have relayed to the
public in regards to June/July, you'd probably think it makes a lot of
sense to be out round this time. I never even try and get excited
about Mac roomers info. Also, a lot, and I mean a lot! Of info was
given out this time round as aposed to all the previous times. Anyway,
that's that.

Re: The lion sleeps tonight

Once I learn it a bit, I'll probably do a general overview, opinions
and thoughts. From what I'm hearing, it sounds great, but something
that will be a bit of a cakewalk. Also, don't forget that this really
is 10.7, and no updates have been posted yet. Still, we will see.

I'm a little reluctant to just download Lion because it is there.

Not that I know of. I don't think anyones ever sure why it happens,
but yeah. DVI or VGA should work fine. I know VGA does for a fact,

just have to have the screen plugged in. However, if anyone finds a

Re: Voice over lag and other lion issues

2011-07-25 Thread James Malone
Alright alright, here's my rant/chat about Lion. I have my mixed
opinions on the OS as it were, and mainly Voiceover. I do to some
extent, feel that Apple didn't give as much thought to Voiceover, or
didn't focus more on important areas and major bugs and correcting
them. For someone like me, Item Chooser is a really big deal, as I
frequent lots of web pages with thousands of items. I really only
started to use the Mac the day SL came out, and I certainly don't
remember seeing this many issues. I've had some pretty major things
like VO refusing to go into menus, and sometimes even the dock.
Turning VO off then on again still didn't cut it. The only thing that
resolved the issue was to restart the OS itself. iTunes... Well, I'll
rest that one a bit, due to issues really starting to hit in 10.3.
mail: Well, for the most part its ok, and the viewing options can be
changed really, so that's a user descression thing, and something I
haven't played with enough to go striking that app down with opinions.
Safari in general: Again, not sure. I'm not sure if I really like the
downloads window on the toolbar, seeing as it seems to screw round
with Voiceover focus when I move it back to the page. However, that's
probably a bug that Apple overlooked. I do find it kind of irratating
that Apple feel the need to stress new Voices as a feature, when there
are other more broken things they could have spent time fixing, or at
least somewhat considering. There is no way that I'm expecting the
thing to be free of bugs, simply because that's just not the nature of
new stuff. Take for example, a new kind of chocolate. You don't know
how it will taste, so you are a bit unsure. You take a bight, and you
don't think you like it as much as the old brand. However, you stick
with it. After a certain time, you develop a fondness for it, and
leave the old one dead in its tracks. End conclusion is, give the OS
an update or two, then see how it goes. If much of this stuff is still
not addressed, then its time to get worryed.
P.S
I can't say I'm all that impressed either with the Scansoft voices,
especially the compact ones. What's the point of them anyway? I dunno
why Apple didn't just make a bunch of new Voices of their own, and
just leave that to iOS. Maybe its just me, but I think Realspeak is a
rather over-used synth in general, and sounds very over priced. If
Apple were to use something like Ivona instead, then I would be more
than happy. Once an update comes ouut, I might post back another
review.
Catcha later,
James

Hi! I'd definitely be interested in learning how to disable spotlight
 the
safe way. Those instructions sent earlier were way
over my little head, that's for sure! I have no doubt that they'd work,
but as I read them, all I could think was: "Or... Go
back to SL until Lion is fised." If spotlight can be disabled simply and
safely in sl too, though, I'd love instructions on
that. Might that be something you'd cover in an up-coming podcast?

I actually have spot light disabled in snow leppard as well. If cocktail
works with lion, I will use it to disable spot
light, it will do this by unchecking one option. I know where I keep
everything on my computer, so I have no need for
spotlight, those resources are better used for other things.

page, and then click on the link that says that (There will probably be a
number after the word chat)
Then just keep scrolling down, and you should find a list of your friends who
are online. Sometimes they will read out the code of the display pictures that
your friends have on the facebook page before they actually read out the name
of the person you are trying to access. Give it time though, and you could use
it. Justclick on the person's name who you wish to start a chat with, and you
will be placed in to an edit box. Just type what you want to say and press
enter. Once you hear a popping sound, it means someone has sent you a message.
just go to the top of the page, and it will have all the links to the chats you
have open. Click on the person name, and you will be placed in to the edit box.
Have a look round nere by, and it should display heading with the dylog of the
conversation.
HTH, James.

Re: Adium has new window

2010-10-04 Thread James Malone
Hi. Once in Adium, hit VO f2 twice, and it will bring up a menu of windows.
Then just arow down, and press enter on the window you want. It could be a chat
message, or Growl could be sending in pop up notifications. If the window says
something about a system alert, then Growl is probably set to bounce and pop up
the notification window whenever an event has occured.

Bringing back an iTunes library

2010-10-16 Thread James Malone
Hi all. I deleted my iTunes library by mistake. All my library is still on my
iPod. If possible I would like to avoid recreating my library, there is
probably over 30 gigs of stuff in there, so I really can't be bothered going
through all that again if I don't have to. So is there any way to get your
library off an ipod and sync it back in to itunes so nothing gets deleted?
Cheers,
James.

Re: iMac VS Mac Mini

2010-11-05 Thread James Malone
I would personally say a Mac Mini. I Don't really see much difference between
the Mac Mini's processor and the iMac.
Another thing to note is that for most things, a mac is not really that
processor intensive at all. I recently bought a macbook pro, but it was the 2.4
instead of the 2.6. My sister has the 2.6, and I've noticed really no
difference. The fact that apple create both the hardware and softwear also
helps a bunch.
Hth,
James.

The iMac offers more options in terms of processing power and hard drive
space. Of course you do get the monitor included. My advice is this:
 1. Determine what you need. In other words, what are you going to use the
machine for and plan this out over at least three years as a minimum.
UNless your one of those folks who upgrade frequently, you want to get a
machine that will grow with you and I tend to keep machines forever, but
if I consider upgrading, it usually is on a three to five year cycle
depending on what my family needs. :) Yeah, I'm really nice, I give them
 the well tested machines. :)
 2. Price out more than one option. For example, if you are leaning toward
a MIni, but you want more drive space and ram, do the math and see if it
would make more sense to go with an iMac versus a Mini.

Of course others will have different opinions, but hope this helps.

Oh ok. Thanks for the correction there, because I was only basing my

A question regarding itunes store

Hi all. Is there a way to set the bitrate of files that you buy from the iTunes
store? Not only that, but the format. I'm also wanting to know this in regards
to ripping CD's as well, because I have a bunch of CD's that I want to rip.
I haven't had much of a chance to play with all that sorta stuff in iTunes all
that much yet, seeing as I've been busy with stuf.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: skype on the mac

2010-05-15 Thread James Malone
Hey. I'll try and answer your questions as best I can. 1. By default, skype
will automatically play a sound to indicate that a contact is on line. 2. Adium
won't impact in any way on skype, if that's what you mean. 3. When it comes up
with the show weppage, cancel and open button, click the open button, and that
message will not appear again, unless you reinstall skype. 4. As for when to
contact someone. Try sending them a message, or giving them a call. Unless you
t-up a time with them at some stage earlier in the day to have a chat or
something. HTH, James.

Re: Strange issue with roland juno G and windows side

I actually think its a driver issue. Roland did say that you couldn't
actually use it on a Mac running Windows, and that they won't support
it. That goes with any Roland driver.

Hey, one simple question here. Have they fixed the item chooser, if

Adium and Facebook chat

2010-12-29 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. I'm having a slight problem with Adium and Facebook chat. When I sign
on to msn, all works fine. However, if I am signed in to both, it will only
show my msn contacts, and will not hsow any of my facebook ones. The only time
it will show a facebook contact, is if they start a conversation with me first.
Is there any way I can get round this?

A dropbox issue.

2010-12-29 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. I'm having a slight drop box issue on my MBP, which I've never had on
my Mac Mini. I just downloaded and installed the latest version of dropbox, and
all went well. Once I tried to open dropbox, almost nothing happened. When I
say almost, I mean almost.
Dropbox opened, but voiceover treated it as if there were no windows, and
nothing I did worked. I tried to click the mouse, but voiceover said it
couldn't bring the mouse into that area. I turned cursor tracking off, but it
still didn't do anything. It was as if voiceover was focused on 2 things at
once. Both the partly opened dropbox, and finder. The only thing I could do,
was press enter. Once I pushed enter, dropbox would completely close
altogether. I tried to go into the menu bar with this partially opened dropbox,
and VO just treated it as if I was still in finder. Therefor, it showed me all
the finder menus. Has anyone else had this issue? and most importantly, how do
I fix it?
Cheers, James.

iPod and ogg?

2011-01-02 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. I've been wondering this for a couple of years now, but I've never
found anything yet. iPods don't support the Ogg format, and apple don't look
like they will. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure. Anyway, onto my question.
Is there some sort of plugin that will make my iPod touch play ogg files? I
know there is an iTunes plugin for ogg, but I've never installed it. I've got a
perfect media player that plays things in ogg. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Cheers,
James

Format conversion software?

2011-01-04 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. I have some stuff to convert from avi to an audio format, most
probably ogg. I've tried to use switch, but it doesn't seem to do any good.
I've tried converting them about 4 times, but each file seems to convert
themselves in to files that are about the sise of around 33 KB. Sometimes a
file will be bigger than that, but not much bigger. The only one that seemed to
reach a decent sise was a file that converted to about 34 meg. When I played it
back though, it sounded horrible. Squeaky, clippy, choppy, you name it, it was
there. Is there an alternative option to this that is accessible?
Cheers,
James

Wow. I love this. I just checked out the App store just now, and bought GB 6.
It was so much nicer. I was actually going to go out and get the DVD later
today, but I'm so glad I could just buy garage band. i don't use iWeb and

A General question on Soundfonts in Garage band

2011-01-07 Thread James Malone
Hi once again. I've been curious about how Soundfonts work on the Mac as a
posed to windows? Do soundfonts play through the Mac soundcard, or do you have
to have an external audio interface connected that supports them. Or, do the
sound come through a midi keyboard assuming it will load soundfonts?
Take care,
James

Hi there. There is indeed a couple of chat clients out there. One of them is

Re: VLC app removed from App Store

2011-01-08 Thread James Malone
Its people like this that frustrate me greatly. I'd be quite interested to know
just how much of Nokia's stuff really conforms to the GPL, seeing as they don't
do an aprooval check, as far as I know. I also think that Nokia phones,
especially the new ones, are the most unstable piece of shit. Or at least, the
new ones anyway. I can't say I liked VLC for iPhone much, but I am still
completely against this. Anyways, that's just me and my thoughts.

Jailbreaking and some solutions?

2011-01-29 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. Recently I Jailbroke my phone, but have run into an issue. I tried to
start Cidia so I could go grab an app, but Voiceover doesn't seem to like it.
Suggestions have been made to get Icy, but everything seems to point in the
direction of downloading it with Cidia. Besides, Icy isn't being made anymore
either, so I've heard. Can anyone suggest what I should do? If worse comes to
worsed, I'll grab some sighted asistance. But still, something that was made by
the apple Dev team really should be accessible. Anyway, thanks guys.

Re: Dropbox accessibility

I'm not happy with the Dropbox team at all. I can't do anything at all
with dropbox on my mac. I can't even install it. There wasn't an
install screen for me anyway. If there is, voiceover isn't showing it.
Dropbox is installed, but I can't log in. The only reason I know it is
installed, is because I have seen the prefs menu with the mouse. Maybe
its just my Mac, but still...

A LIttle Issue with Mail

2011-02-01 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. A while ago I setup mail on my Mac. I seem to notice this issue. If I
delete all my messages out of one folder, quite often they'll come back when I
move the voiceover focus to another mailbox. An example of this is:
I have a folder for all the Mac Visionaries emails. Sometimes. Say I wanted to
select all and then delete. So, I do this, and al the messages in there are
deleted. Now, lets say the amount of messages in the mailbox was 230
Voiceover then reports that 230 items have been selected, and then I push
delete, and the mailbox shows up as empty. However, say I go to my inbox folder
to see what's there and come back, I will find that all the 230 message I
deleted before in Mac Visionaries are all still there. This seems to be
happening with a few of my mailboxes. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

DVD Ripping software on the Mac?

2011-03-05 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. Does anyone know of a good DVD ripper for the Mac? I've tried
handbreak, but it all seems to put it in to 1 big chunky file. I have a TV
series I'd like to rip, and I'd like each EP to be in a seperate file

Accessibility of Cidia?

2011-03-08 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. I recently jailbroke my phone on my Mac. I was told a while ago that
Cidia was apparently now accessible. However, I found this to not be the case,
at least with me. Is there some way I can install jailbroken aps on my Mac? or
is there an update to Cidia? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
James

Yeah, that's how I installed it as well. I was more meaning how could I
install other Jailbroken apps on my phone without using Cidia? I know there is
a way on windows, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks guys. Yeah Rose, I saw your article on the subject, but I just assumed
that Cyder 2 was only for windows. Never the less, I'll give it a look.

Moving the partition slider in bootcamp using VO?

2011-04-02 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. The subject pretty much says it all. I decided last night to install
Windows on to Mac so I could use things like VST. However, when it got to the
point of partitioning my Hard Drive, I found that I could not in any way shape
or form move the slider with VO. I can get sighted assistance if needed, but
I'd like to think there is some sorta work around for this. :) If anyone knows
how to do this, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
James
