Re: pdf and mac question

2016-03-25 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Another thing you should know… According to discussions on the WEB AIM mailing
list, Macintosh generated PDF’s do not include TAGS, which are essential for
proper reading of the alternative text in graphics and various other
structures.

While Preview on the Macintosh also does not interpret PDF tags, for full
understanding by the entire user community of a complex document, you should be
using PDF-UA which is an international standard.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

This is interesting. I had never even heard of the Drag after or Drag before
commands. Good to know there's a way to do this, but I think I'll just stick
to using the contextual menu or the keyboard command.

Re: Getting contacts from iPod touch to iphone 5s

2016-03-25 Thread Scott Granados
Just sync them both to iCloud and they should be available on both devices. If
you have them in different groups you may have to combine them with a cut and
paste move but in general, if you’re syncing devices to iCloud you should be
able to see the same contacts on one as the other and when you add a contact to
one device it populates your others.

Hope that helps.

Problem with imap gmail on Mac OS

2016-03-25 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am using VoiceOver on my 2008 iMac with El Capitan 10.11.4 and Apple mail to
create a new Email for my gmail account which is set up as imap. Note that the
below problem has happened on every El Capitan release and also on every
Yosemite release.

SO I start the Apple mail application and press command+n to create a new
message. I type the message text, and then edit it to correct errors. I then
send the message. If I then look at the contents of the trash mail box I see
numerous copies of the above Email. It seems that someone is saving the Email
after every edit action. This fills up my trash mail box and presumably also
fills up gmail and consumes network traffic. It also presumably uses needless
processing power to do all this and thereby slows down my machine.

Do others see this problem and if so have you found a way to stop this
behaviour?

Best regards….

Paul Hopewell

Re: Starbucks Order And Pay

2016-03-25 Thread Basioli George
ok i just did this on a 6 s+,

opened the app
doubbled tapped on order
flicked to i found grando americona and dubbled taped
on the next screen you need to doubble tap on 1 grand americona
now in the next page you will have a discription of the drink, then a place to
doubble tap to add more water and then another place to add shots and then
another place to add extras like sourps, etc. then move on from there by
doubble tapping on reset recipe.

i have noticed and have talked to the main office since i live just outside
seattle and let them know non of their links, buttons are not labeled as such.
for example the reset recipe should say reset recipe / button or link or what
ever it is.

i even tried now before sending this to you by turning on the hints, and there
is not even any hint for the example reset recipe.

el capitan performance

2016-03-25 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi List,

Ok, so I've just in the past week reinstalled ElCapitan from scratch as it was
origionally an update from Yosemite.

I was finding things like vo M would bring up the menus but I couldn't use down
/ up arrows to scrole up or down the menus.
But could use VO up / down to get to what I needed.

I'm also finding and this could just be a new feature of ElCap
That I'm having to unlock everything in system preferences when I go to make
simple changes such as
I'm running bootcamp also due to needing windows for work and I have to unlock
startup drive when changing to bootcamp from OSX

Not overly worried about this but the bnot being able to scrole down menus is
becoming a pain in the backside.

So I reinstalled from scratch including wiping my drive and the VO up / down
issue was corrected, I then installed Bootcamp and dam it if the issue hasn't
come back.

Is anyone else finding this to be an issue for them at all?

This is 10.11.3 running on a mid / late 2013 11inch mac book air.

And as yet no I haven't updated to 10.11.4
And no I can't drop bootcamp without having to then buy a windows computer
which I don't want.

Thanks for any info

Cheers,

Simon f

If you just tick the contacts box in iCloud on your iPod and make sure the
contacts is ticked on your phone you wont have to do anything it’s all magical

Little cloud people push things out to your devices from the iCloud world.

This is interesting. I had never even heard of the Drag after or Drag before
commands. Good to know there's a way to do this, but I think I'll just stick
to using the contextual menu or the keyboard command.

ok i just did this on a 6 s+,

opened the app
doubbled tapped on order
flicked to i found grando americona and dubbled taped on the next screen you
need to doubble tap on 1 grand americona now in the next page you will have a
discription of the drink, then a place to doubble tap to add more water and
then another place to add shots and then another place to add extras like
sourps, etc. then move on from there by doubble tapping on reset recipe.

i have noticed and have talked to the main office since i live just outside
seattle and let them know non of their links, buttons are not labeled as such.
for example the reset recipe should say reset recipe / button or link or what
ever it is.

i even tried now before sending this to you by turning on the hints, and there
is not even any hint for the example reset recipe.

pdf documents

2016-03-25 Thread Jean
Thank you for the explanation. How does one make a pdf ua? I don’t see any
option for this when I try to export a document. Also, if a pdf is
automatically zipped is it still universal? In other words, what is the best
way to create a pdf document which is both universally readable and small
enough to email if it is large?
Many thanks in advance,
Jean

Using a keyboard with lightning connector cable on a micro USB device

2016-03-25 Thread Mary Otten
I have a very nice keyboard with the cable that has a lightning connector on
it. I have used it to type notes on my iPad mini. I'm wondering if anybody has
ever heard of a device sort of an adapter, that you could use to convert the
lightning plug to a micro USB plug for use on other devices which take micro
USB input. I am thinking specifically of android devices, such as the Nexus
line. Any thoughts?
Mary

Re: el capitan performance

2016-03-25 Thread Terje Strømberg
A mail tips. In the adress field, if you want to send to more than one, you can
hit «enter» and type the next e-mail adress. Enter is the key in the «subject»
field also, therefore i mentioned it, after typing the subject, you can hit
«enter» again and the cursor are right in the main text edit field. Fast and
easy.

If you are in and reading an email in the text field and the vo+j don’t work
sunnenly, you can hit ctrl-option-command + the home key, vo+j, once or towice
and now you are in the mail boxes table, hit vo+j one more time.

OSX 10.11.4 in the classic version of mail.

Take care

Re: Starbucks Order And Pay

2016-03-25 Thread Basioli George
ok my error eariler sory the reset put’s the choices you made back to defalt

i picked the americon again and grondy and then the next screen doubbled tap
on the 3 shots which is rite after the discription of the drink
now you should be taken to the next page and flick right with one finger and
you will hear 3 shots after a couple of flicks, and then keep flicking to the
right and you will hear something minous and flick again and you hear something
plus. sory i can not remember exactually the word before minous and plus and
doubble tap on the plus once and if you flick left you will hear 4 shots.
now you have that comfermed start flicking to the right again and go past reset
to you hear save and doubble tap.
now your taken back to the original screen where you got the discription of the
drink and if you flick right you will now see it is 4 shots.
now flick down to you hear save and double tap.
now you can place the order or i think also save to your favorits

  Hi List,

Ok, so I’ve just in the past week reinstalled ElCapitan from scratch as it
was origionally an update from Yosemite.

I was finding things like vo M would bring up the menus but I couldn’t use
down / up arrows to scrole up or down the menus.

But could use VO up / down to get to what I needed.

I’m also finding and this could just be a new feature of ElCap

That I’m having to unlock everything in system preferences when I go to make
simple changes such as

I’m running bootcamp also due to needing windows for work and I have to
unlock startup drive when changing to bootcamp from OSX

Not overly worried about this but the bnot being able to scrole down menus is
becoming a pain in the backside.

So I reinstalled from scratch including wiping my drive and the VO up / down
issue was corrected, I then installed Bootcamp and dam it if the issue hasn’t
come back.

Is anyone else finding this to be an issue for them at all?

This is 10.11.3 running on a mid / late 2013 11inch mac book air.

And as yet no I haven’t updated to 10.11.4

And no I can’t drop bootcamp without having to then buy a windows computer
which I don’t want.

  Thanks for any info

  Cheers,

  Simon f

This may sound like a weird question. Maybe I'm not completely
understanding, but if you're using what I think you are, could you not just
bluetooth the thing to the Android device instead of connecting it via

I have a very nice keyboard with the cable that has a lightning connector on
it. I have used it to type notes on my iPad mini. I'm wondering if anybody
has ever heard of a device sort of an adapter, that you could use to convert
the lightning plug to a micro USB plug for use on other devices which take
micro USB input. I am thinking specifically of android devices, such as the
Nexus line. Any thoughts?

A mail tips. In the adress field, if you want to send to more than one, you
can hit «enter» and type the next e-mail adress. Enter is the key in the
«subject» field also, therefore i mentioned it, after typing the subject,
you can hit «enter» again and the cursor are right in the main text edit
field. Fast and easy.

If you are in and reading an email in the text field and the vo+j don’t work
sunnenly, you can hit ctrl-option-command + the home key, vo+j, once or
towice and now you are in the mail boxes table, hit vo+j one more time.

OSX 10.11.4 in the classic version of mail.

Take care

No. This keyboard does not have Bluetooth. There've been so many issues with
Bluetooth and iOS that I decided to get this keyboard that has the lightning

Gotcha. I thought you were talking about the Magic Apple keyboard which can
charge via USB. I was like wait. the lightning end goes into the keyboard,
not the device. I'm on the same page now.

No. This keyboard does not have Bluetooth. There've been so many issues with
Bluetooth and iOS that I decided to get this keyboard that has the lightning
connector. It is a great keyboard. It has a full set of vo keys on both
sides of the space bar and a great typing feel, but it is not Bluetooth.

I have a very nice keyboard with the cable that has a lightning connector
on it. I have used it to type notes on my iPad mini. I'm wondering if
anybody has ever heard of a device sort of an adapter, that you could use
to convert the lightning plug to a micro USB plug for use on other devices
which take micro USB input. I am thinking specifically of android devices,
such as the Nexus line. Any thoughts?

Opinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and die?

2016-03-25 Thread Mary Otten
In light of the recent discussion about the new iPhone and 3-D touch, I post
the following.
Mary
Opinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and die?
9to5Mac / Ben Lovejoy

When Apple launched the iPhone 6s/Plus, 3D Touch was one of the headline
features. Apple devoted a full four-minute video to showing what it does and
how it works. Even today, visit the Apple website and click on the iPhone 6s,
and it’s the first thing you see. Apple’s summary of the phone is ‘3D Touch,
12MP photos, 4K video.’

The first tab at the top of the screen is 3D Touch. The first video linked is
the one for 3D Touch. Scroll down the page for the detail of the phone, and 3D
Touch – ‘the next generation of multi-touch’ – is again the first feature to be
shown. Clearly Apple thinks it’s a big deal.

And yet, the company just this week unveiled not just one but two new iOS
devices, neither of which offers the feature. This is perhaps understandable in
the case of the iPhone SE – Apple needed some tech distinctions between its
flagship phone and its new budget model. But it’s an odd omission from a brand
new iPad …

I’ve heard two theories about why Apple hasn’t rolled out 3D Touch more widely.
The first is that yield rates have been poor. That would limit the volumes in
which the system can be produced, and make it an expensive feature to add. If
that is indeed the case, it adds a second reason for Apple to withhold it from
its cheapest ever iPhone.

The second is that there are significant challenges involved in scaling-up 3D
Touch to larger screens, and that this is the reason we haven’t yet seen it on
an iPad.

While both suggestions are unconfirmed, I think they are likely true – because
otherwise, Apple’s behavior doesn’t make sense. There’s no other reason I can
see to hold back from the latest iPad a feature the company champions so
strongly.

But even if it’s manufacturing challenges holding back the wider rollout, it
still effectively places the feature on hold for a large chunk of iOS users.

Nor is hardware support the only issue. While we have seen an increasing number
of apps adding support for 3D Touch, it has still been adopted by only a
minority of them. I haven’t seen any hard numbers, but if you follow the ‘View
3D Touch apps in the App Store‘ link on Apple’s website, it shows only 56.

Clearly there are many more than that, but a random sampling of the third-party
apps on the first two screens on my iPhone shows that just 9 out of 37 of them
support 3D Touch. Whatever the overall percentage, it’s low.

If adding 3D Touch support to an app was a complex task, you could understand
developers deciding not to bother until Apple makes it available on more
devices. But it’s not: adding Home screen actions is extremely easy. For
whatever reason, developers don’t appear to share Apple’s view of the
importance of the feature.

And it’s not just third-party developers who haven’t fully embraced the
feature: there are still native Apple apps that don’t. The Activity app, for
one. That’s a pretty crazy state of affairs.

My sampling of my own apps brings up another big problem with 3D Touch. The
only way I could tell which ones support it was to force-touch each one in
turn. Trial-and-error. There’s no other way to tell.

As Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly put it in a Facebook discussion we were
having yesterday: “For the record, I like 3D Touch, but it needs to be
implemented in a way that removes the guesswork of what is and isn’t 3D Touch
enabled.”

I’m going to be a little less polite than him. Just think about that from a UI
perspective: an app may or may not support a headline feature of the phone, and
the only way I can tell is by randomly stabbing at apps with my finger like a
deranged monkey. That is utterly appalling UI design, and there’s no excuse for
it from anyone – far less from Apple, which prides itself on usability above
all else.

I would argue it’s also poor UI to have an operating system feature that may or
may not be available depending on the device you’re using at the time. Sure, I
understand that older devices may not be able to support all of the latest
features, and that there are some features only practical on a larger screen.
But someone switching between the flagship iPhone and the very latest iPad
should not be seeing a feature on their phone that they can’t use on their iPad.

So 3D Touch seems to be trapped in a Catch-22 situation. App developers are
seeing what looks like half-hearted support for it from Apple, and not even
bothering to do the pretty trivial work involved in supporting Home screen
actions, while Apple can’t really make too much fuss about a feature that some
of its high-end iOS devices don’t have at all, and others have in only a
relatively small percentage of apps.

This seems to me to call into question the future of the feature. Even if 3D
Touch makes it into iPads in the next release,

Hi List,

Ok, so I’ve just in the past week reinstalled ElCapitan from scratch as it was
origionally an update from Yosemite.

I was finding things like vo M would bring up the menus but I couldn’t use down
/ up arrows to scrole up or down the menus.
But could use VO up / down to get to what I needed.

I’m also finding and this could just be a new feature of ElCap
That I’m having to unlock everything in system preferences when I go to make
simple changes such as
I’m running bootcamp also due to needing windows for work and I have to unlock
startup drive when changing to bootcamp from OSX

Not overly worried about this but the bnot being able to scrole down menus is
becoming a pain in the backside.

So I reinstalled from scratch including wiping my drive and the VO up / down
issue was corrected, I then installed Bootcamp and dam it if the issue hasn’t

Cheers,

Hi Mary,

This keyboard sounds interesting, what is the model / brand?

Are you able to disconnect the cable?

I'm guessing not otherwise you wouldn't have had to ask the question.

But it’s an odd omission from a brand
new iPad …

I’ve heard two theories about why Apple hasn’t rolled out 3D Touch more
widely. The first is that yield rates have been poor. That would limit the
volumes in which the system can be produced, and make it an expensive feature
to add. If that is indeed the case, it adds a second reason for Apple to
withhold it from its cheapest ever iPhone.

The second is that there are significant challenges involved in scaling-up 3D
Touch to larger screens, and that this is the reason we haven’t yet seen it on
an iPad.

While both suggestions are unconfirmed, I think they are likely true –
because otherwise, Apple’s behavior doesn’t make sense. There’s no other reason
I can see to hold back from the latest iPad a feature the company champions so
strongly.

But even if it’s manufacturing challenges holding back the wider rollout, it
still effectively places the feature on hold for a large chunk of iOS users.

Nor is hardware support the only issue. While we have seen an increasing
number of apps adding support for 3D Touch, it has still been adopted by only a
minority of them. I haven’t seen any hard numbers, but if you follow the ‘View
3D Touch apps in the App Store‘ link on Apple’s website, it shows only 56.

Clearly there are many more than that, but a random sampling of the
third-party apps on the first two screens on my iPhone shows that just 9 out of
37 of them support 3D Touch.

Just think about that from a
UI perspective: an app may or may not support a headline feature of the phone,
and the only way I can tell is by randomly stabbing at apps with my finger like
a deranged monkey. That is utterly appalling UI design, and there’s no excuse
for it from anyone – far less from Apple, which prides itself on usability
above all else.

I would argue it’s also poor UI to have an operating system feature that may
or may not be available depending on the device you’re using at the time. Sure,
I understand that older devices may not be able to support all of the latest
features, and that there are some features only practical on a larger screen.
But someone switching between the flagship iPhone and the very latest iPad
should not be seeing a feature on their phone that they can’t use on their iPad.

So 3D Touch seems to b

Yeah it's a good question,
I would start with apple and ask if they do a female lightening adaptor to
either micro USB or USB
It would end up being a maze of adaptor cables.

Good luck and I'd like to know about the keyboard make and model.

Well, I did Google for this, and I hadn't come across anything that looked like
what I want. I suppose there isn't a whole lot of demand for such a thing. I
just like his keyboard, do not like dictation on android or editing on android
on the touchscreen. So I thought I would see if perhaps I could use my keyboard
there.

That I’m having to unlock everything in system preferences when I go to
make simple changes such as

I’m running bootcamp also due to needing windows for work and I have to
unlock startup drive when changing to bootcamp from OSX

Not overly worried about this but the bnot being able to scrole down menus
is becoming a pain in the backside.

So I reinstalled from scratch including wiping my drive and the VO up /
down issue was corrected, I then installed Bootcamp and dam it if the issue
hasn’t come back.

Cheers,

 Hi Simon,
The keyboard is macally ikey ltII.
I'm on it some months ago on Amazon. I don't remember what it cost. What I
really like about it is the full complement of control command and option keys
on both sides of thespace bar. Belkin makes one, but it does not have that full
complement. And no, sadly, you cannot disconnect the cable from the keyboard.

Hi Simon,
The keyboard is macally ikey ltII.
I'm on it some months ago on Amazon. I don't remember what it cost. What I
really like about it is the full complement of control command and option
keys on both sides of thespace bar. Belkin makes one, but it does not have
that full complement. And no, sadly, you cannot disconnect the cable from
the keyboard.

No. This keyboard does not have Bluetooth. There've been so many issues
with Bluetooth and iOS that I decided to get this keyboard that has the
lightning connector. It is a great keyboard. It has a full set of vo keys
on both sides of the space bar and a great typing feel, but it is not
Bluetooth.

I have a very nice keyboard with the cable that has a lightning connector
on it. I have used it to type notes on my iPad mini. I'm wondering if
anybody has ever heard of a device sort of an adapter, that you could use
to convert the lightning plug to a micro USB plug for use on other
devices which take micro USB input. I am thinking specifically of android
devices, such as the Nexus line. Any thoughts?

No, there is no separate keypad. I don't believe I have seen a keyboard with a
separate keypad in a long time, except of course the ones that are made for
desktop machines that you have to buy aftermarket. DAS keyboard comes to mind.
But I don't think they make a portable keyboard.

In light of the recent discussion about the new iPhone and 3-D touch, I
post the following.
  Mary
Opinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and
die?
  9to5Mac / Ben Lovejoy

When Apple launched the iPhone 6s/Plus, 3D Touch was one of the headline
features. Apple devoted a full four-minute video to showing what it does and
how it works. Even today, visit the Apple website and click on the iPhone 6s,
and it’s the first thing you see. Apple’s summary of the phone is ‘3D Touch,
12MP photos, 4K video.’

The first tab at the top of the screen is 3D Touch. The first video
linked is the one for 3D Touch. Scroll down the page for the detail of the
phone, and 3D Touch – ‘the next generation of multi-touch’ – is again the first
feature to be shown.

But it’s an odd omission from a brand

The second is that there are significant challenges involved in
scaling-up 3D Touch to larger screens, and that this is the reason we haven’t
yet seen it on an iPad.

While both suggestions are unconfirmed, I think they are likely true –
because otherwise, Apple’s behavior doesn’t make sense. There’s no other reason
I can see to hold back from the latest iPad a feature the company champions so
strongly.

But even if it’s manufacturing challenges holding back the wider rollout,
it still effectively places the feature on hold for a large chunk of iOS users.

Whatever the overall percentage, it’s low.

If adding 3D Touch support to an app was a complex task, you could
understand developers deciding not to bother until Apple makes it available on
more devices.

The only way I could tell which ones support it was to force-touch each one in
turn. Trial-and-error. There’s no other way to tell.

As Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly put it in a Facebook discussion we
were having yesterday: “For the record, I like 3D Touch, but it needs to be
implemented in a way that removes the guesswork of what is and isn’t 3D Touch
enabled.”

I’m going to be a little less polite than him. Just think about that from
a UI perspective: an app may or may not support a headline feature of the
phone, and the only way I can tell is by

Hi Christopher,

Yeah not an issue with setup.

The machine is a later 2013 mac book air,
Purchased late july that year,
Custom build
I7 processor,
8Gig ram and 512 GB ssd drive
11 inch,

Installed now OSX 10.11.3,
Drive divided into half for host OS and bootcamp.

1 user on mac side,
Office 2011 and 2016 both installed,

Other than that, nothing out of ordinary,

Boot camp is running windows 10 64 bit enterprise version
Again nothing out of ordinary
Although I have active directory admin tools installed on windows side,

Everything worked fine under Yosemite

Odd very odd.
Any thoughts appreciated.

So I reinstalled from scratch including wiping my drive and the VO up / down
issue was corrected, I then installed Bootcamp and dam it if the issue hasn’t

Cheers,

Simon f

  Hi Christopher,

Yeah not an issue with setup.

The machine is a later 2013 mac book air,

  Purchased late july that year,

  Custom build

  I7 processor,

8Gig ram and 512 GB ssd drive

  11 inch,

  Installed now OSX 10.11.3,

Drive divided into half for host OS and bootcamp.

  1 user on mac side,

Office 2011 and 2016 both installed,

Other than that, nothing out of ordinary,

Boot camp is running windows 10 64 bit enterprise version

  Again nothing out of ordinary

Although I have active directory admin tools installed on windows side,

  Everything worked fine under Yosemite

  Odd very odd.

  Any thoughts appreciated.

  Subject: el capitan performance

  Hi List,

Ok, so I’ve just in the past week reinstalled ElCapitan from scratch as
it was origionally an update from Yosemite.

I was finding things like vo M would bring up the menus but I couldn’t
use down / up arrows to scrole up or down the menus.

But could use VO up / down to get to what I needed.

I’m also finding and this could just be a new feature of ElCap

That I’m having to unlock everything in system preferences when I go to
make simple changes such as

I’m running bootcamp also due to needing windows for work and I have to
unlock startup drive when changing to bootcamp from OSX

Not overly worried about this but the bnot being able to scrole down
menus is becoming a pain in the backside.

So I reinstalled from scratch including wiping my drive and the VO up /
down issue was corrected, I then installed Bootcamp and dam it if the issue
hasn’t come back.

Is anyone else finding this to be an issue for them at all?

This is 10.11.3 running on a mid / late 2013 11inch mac book air.

And as yet no I haven’t updated to 10.11.4

And no I can’t drop bootcamp without having to then buy a windows
computer which I don’t want.

  Thanks for any info

  Cheers,

  Simon f
