You can also get to the dock by pressing control+f3. Also, you can gett to
menu extras by pressing control+f8 or vo+m twice.

Airplay iPhone 5S to Apple TV 3rd Generation

2015-12-29 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
When using airplay does iPhone 5S use wifi to directly communicate with Apple
TV or does it use wifi via my wifi router? I hope it uses wifi directly to the
Apple TV and thereby bypasses my wifi router.

I ask because my Apple TV is located where wifi to my router is not good. Hence
the Apple TV keeps dropping out when streaming video from iTunes on my iMac. I
cannot move the Apple TV to a location with better wifi signal without
rearranging the entire room! Hence I am wondering if airplay from my iPhone
would work better.

Best regards….

Paul Hopewell

RE: Best configuration for new mac?

2015-12-29 Thread Bill Holton
Not sure what you mean by virtualization downgrade? Is there a difference
between the old dual core processors from the 2012 mins and the newer dual core
processors, other than clock speed? Will a quad core on a macgbook improve
virtual machine performance since you can dedicate two cores to each Mac and
Windows? Thanks.

I really believe that multicore performance is a good thing to have when doing
virtualisation. No two ways around it: the latest Mac Mini is a downgrade from
its predecessor, because of the dual-core processors. Sure, they’re newer
family chips, but they are still slower. Worse yet, RAM is not upgradable, and
storage is not upgradable without substantial (and very careful) disassembly.
I have no doubt that Apple are, if not intentionally doing it, at least glad
that the Mini will no longer threaten their Mac Pros or iMacs, both of which
now present alternative options. The Mac Mini is such an attractive machine,
and I too have been recently eyeing them up hungrily for their lovely SSD
performance and small form factor, but I just can’t bring myself to buy a
downgraded machine for any purpose other than the one for which my current
dual-core Mini is serving (a simple caching server). Indeed, my previous 2010
Mini could be upgraded `if I chose: both RAM and SSD would bring it up to par
with the best Mac Mini, if you discount the slight clock speed boost (2.6 to
3.0), the change in processor family and the addition of an optical drive. Of
course, as you said, you could also investigate quad-core options in laptops as
well, and get out of the dual-core league entirely. But if you must buy a
Mini, get a maximally configured Mini, so as to save long-term on your
investment: 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM, 3.0 GHz I7 dual-core. This configuration will
let you down a bit in the virtualisation department, but will make up for it in
general use.

Re: Best configuration for new mac?

2015-12-29 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Bill.

I should have been clearer that the 2012 Mac Mini did offer a quad-core option.
And yes, giving just one core to an OS will work, but will not be quite as
fluid as at least a dual-core virtual machine. So yes, if you’re planning on
virtualisation-heavy workloads, look at the portables.

Re: Best configuration for new mac?

2015-12-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche
May I ask further? How many cores would you assign to virtual machine running
windows 7 on my mac pro with 3 GHz Intel Core i7? I'd greatly appreciate your
advice. I don't quite understand the concept of cores, especially that lots of
material on VMWare website talks about virtual cores and I get confused
because I don't know whether the processor on my macbook pro has virtual cores
and therefore 7 of them or physical cores.

Many thanks

iOS 9 voiceover manuals

2015-12-29 Thread Phil Halton
I'm trying to locate somewhere on apple.com the getting started manual for
voiceover.
Can anyone point me to a link or a page where I can just get the iOS voiceover
manual?. It used to be located somewhere in Safari bookmarks, but I don't see
it there anymore.
Thanks

Hi Phil,
Choose, Support, and in the search field, search for user manuals or iOS

Re: Trillian Has Broken Accessibility

2015-12-29 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I don't think being angry about things and attacking them is the way to go.
That said, I do understand your anger. I, like you, hate it when companies
think eye candy is the way to go, so therefore break things.

Though it's tempting for me to publicly on Twitter attack them for this, I'm
not gonna do so. I'll write them, yes, but not disrespectfully. What if
they truly don't know that what they did broke things. For all we know,
Trillion on the mac has been accessible for quite some time, so perhaps this
wasn't something they meant to have happen, and if we let them know, they
might be willing to fix it.

Now, that said, if they then get unreasonable with us, and start not
cooperating, then? our anger attacks will be warranted. I'd not go quite to
that level just quite yet though.

Hey guys. I just updated Trillian and I found a big surprise.
Accessibility is totally broken. Whenever I arrow up or down in the
contact list, all Voiceover says is blank selected. How nice. I'm thinking
of rolling back to an earlier version that I've backed up to time machine
but my only problem with that is it will update automatically to this
inaccessible version. My question to you all is after I do this, can I
turn off automatic updates for certain apps or do I have to choose if
things update automatically or not? Thanks.

Re: Router recomendations?

2015-12-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I'm very grateful to Anders, Sabahattin and others for this discussion. I can
see what I must do now to improve my network setup. I've just ordered the
Draytek v130, and I will make it my modem and allow my Airport Extreme to
handle everything else. I feel that it should improve infinitely the speed and
reliability of my network. At present I have my airport extreme set up in
bridge mode and my modem router handles NaT, DHcP, port forwarding, and it is
not such a great machine but free modem router from my ISP. So my airport
extreme with all its huge potential is sitting there providing just wifi whilst
it could work at the potential for which it is designed. I've never quite
understood these things until now. I'm very nervous though because I've not
configured my airport extreme in this way before, so I don't know what to
expect when my modem arrives. I obviously will have to reconfigure my airport
extreme but I'm not sure how it's going to be, and whether I will be
successful. The last thing I want to do is to mess up my network for everybody
else in the house; they won't be happy! Will I have to reset my airport
extreme to factory setting before I connect it to the DrayTek v130 modem? Or
can I just connect it and then through airport utility change the setting from
bridge to router function? I've searched the internet for instructions but I
find vague references to this and with an earlier version of DrayTek v120. I'd
appreciate any tips or advice.

Many thanks

Re: iOS 9 voiceover manuals

2015-12-29 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
If you’re talking about the iPhone user guide, you can view it online at
http://help.apple.com/iphone . (Incidentally, replace “iphone” in that URL
with the names of other products, for instance “appletv”, to get their
respective manuals.)

The manuals are always published by Apple in the iBooks Store, too. And, as
somebody else mentioned, are available as PDFs from Apple Support. Just search
them out.

The VoiceOver Getting Started guide for OS X is available from the VoiceOver
Help menu (VO-H). Mac specific, of course.

Re: Airplay iPhone 5S to Apple TV 3rd Generation

2015-12-29 Thread Scott Granados
I believe the iPhone uses the main connection so the airplay data would
traverse the router. This makes sense. What I’m not sure is if the two radios
talk together on the WiFi side once the session is established or if the access
point always has to stay in the middle, I’d suspect the ladder.

Try it but expect the router to be in the mix. You might try changing WiFi
channels and settings to improve performance.

Good luck

Re: wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-29 Thread Scott Granados
Ok, Ricardo, I finally got this working but it took some finessing.

Here’s what I did, your milage may vary. First, trouble out T-Mobile I called
them and they were surprised this feature worked but they said they wouldn’t
block other devices like laptops or iPads so the watch should work. After
ruling out the carrier I called Apple.
The problem I had was the following. Under the settings glance, I
would see connected over iPhone and if the phone was disabled or turned off it
would say disconnected and never change. I restarted the watch, no change. I
then disabled WiFi Calling and other device calling on my iPhone and reenabled.
Once reenabled I then opened the watch app and went to phone where a WiFi and
calls subsection now appear. I set this option to on and allow to sync. Still
no go. I then open the iCloud section of settings on my iPhone, click on the
part that’s my name and wait, I’m prompted with a password and a few times I’m
told it fails do to an ID server error. Once it authenticates which I achieved
by repeating the login process 3 times the watch synced. I turned off the
phone and with in 10 seconds it said connected to WiFi. I then opened the
phone app, clicked on recents and picked a number where the call completed once
I tapped on it’s label. It worked perfectly. Incoming calls also work with
the phone off. Once the phone restarts the connection reverts to the phone.
The watch should join any simple access points I’ve joined previously now. It
won’t log in to captive portals or cert based authentication environments etc.

Let me know if that helps at all.

Thanks
Scott

Re: wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-29 Thread Scott Granados
So here’s how that works. The interface between the watch and the phone
appears to be bluetooth. The calls route over bluetooth and notifications are
sent over bluetooth.
WiFi kicks in if the primary connection to the phone over bluetooth is
lost. Once the loss is detected the watch joins any WiFi networks you’ve
previously joined in range. Once the phone is back on or in range the watch
restores it’s pairing automatically with the phone.

Hi, if I want to digital touch someone how do I do it successfully with voice
over on.

On my watch i press the button, select the friend, select the digital touch
option, select the area where it seems there should be input and tap away. Not
much happens. I can also not always receive them reliably. Any pointers on
managing digital touches would besot appreciated.

Thank you

Re: wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-29 Thread Brent Harding
That's what I always thought too. By the time I got my watch around the end
of June or early July, Sprint had wifi calling available on the iPhone,
outgoing calls could be made from the watch, but incoming had to be answered
on the phone. That wifi calling made the watch not receive calls back then.
I only first got the ability to have wifi calling on my phone with incoming
calls passed to the watch in iOS 9 and Watch OS 2. I'm not sure if that was
an Apple bug or sprint's network design. Once I did all the updates and
turned on the other devices stuff in iOS, it added some free extra service
to my Sprint account that blessed the watch with incoming call abilities.

So here’s how that works. The interface between the watch and the phone
appears to be bluetooth. The calls route over bluetooth and notifications
are sent over bluetooth.
WiFi kicks in if the primary connection to the phone over bluetooth is
lost. Once the loss is detected the watch joins any WiFi networks you’ve
previously joined in range. Once the phone is back on or in range the watch
restores it’s pairing automatically with the phone.

I think this is another one of those features that has to be supported by
the carrier. When I first got my watch, Sprint did not have it, so if the
phone was on Wifi calling, the watch would simply not ring at all. If I
was away and the phone was on cellular, the watch did ring. Now that
Sprint enabled this feature, it works on both. I thought this phone
calling through the watch was over bluetooth, but I guess it is a direct
connection to the carrier you have.

I am not in range of a WiFi network that the watch could join though.

2015-12-29 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Scott,

Nearly. The watch and phone will use Bluetooth if available. If Bluetooth is
off or unavailable, the watch uses any existing association to reach the phone
over Wi-Fi. Finally, if the phone itself is off and can’t be reached by any
method, then the watch will do some things independently, including (for those
in the States who can get it) Wi-Fi Calling. An increasing number of apps will
work with no phone pairing, though not nearly enough in my book, including for
example the “Remote” app. Accordingly have a phone on and on your Wi-Fi
network, even if it’s just on charge. Moreover, Bluetooth is always required
to perform a remote watch unlock from the phone.

radio and iPhone 5S

Hi all!
Just curious. I have heard that there is a built-in radio chip in most smart
phones. Is this true and how does it become activated. If this is the case
why do we need special apps to listen to radio?
I have an iPhone 5S and would like to know more about this.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Router recomendations?

2015-12-29 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Andrew.

I have the set up that Sabahattin was talking about as it was on his
recommendation and his help that I have a rock solid network handled by my
Draytech 230 and Airport Extreme. It wasn’t hard to set up but if you need
help, there are plenty of us on this list who will help. I am not technical
but as Sabahattin helped me set mine up, I can’t remember what to do but I know
I had it working within in 10 or 15 minutes. Once it’s done you will have no
problems.

What I do remember is that you need to go in to network settings and find the
router and then put in your information in to the fields.

Kawal.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2015-12-29 Thread Brent Harding
I don't think the iPhones ever had one. The radio might be part of the chips
in there, but Apple disabled it somehow to where we can't turn it on. I
think this is something exclusively for Android phones, but it would require
headphones or a cable hooked to speakers to use for its antenna, so it
wouldn't be real useful when the broadcasters say one would need it most on
those TV ads because most of us don't carry wired headphones around.

Hi all!
Just curious. I have heard that there is a built-in radio chip in most
smart phones. Is this true and how does it become activated. If this is
the case why do we need special apps to listen to radio?

I have an iPhone 5S and would like to know more about this.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

iTunes, automatic behavors

2015-12-29 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

When I start up iTunes, all of this automatic activity occurs, & I don’t know
how to stop it. The Mac wants to open the store, it pops up my iPad, then my
iPhone. I need to wait 30 seconds or so for it to run through it’s little
routine before I can do what I want to do. Is there a way to stop this? I
want to open up iTunes & go directly where I want to go.

Also, is anyone having Voiceover troubles, where the screen reader seems to
hang? I need to navigate away from iTunes then back to get it speaking again.
I’ve found the quickest way, is f11 for desktop, then a quick f11 again to
bring back iTunes & Voiceover talking.

Thank you,
Traci

Hi, if I want to digital touch someone how do I do it successfully with
voice over on.

On my watch i press the button, select the friend, select the digital touch

Not much happens. I can also not always receive them reliably. Any
pointers on managing digital touches would besot appreciated.

If you have reliable Internet access, however, you can listen to any of a
large number of radio stations via streaming. A friend introduced me to the
TuneIn radio application (http://www.tunein.com/), available on the Web as
well as for iOS and Android devices. It works well with VoiceOver under iOS.

The larger story here is that the Internet is gradually superseding other
communications technologies. At the moment, it doesn't handle broadcast
scenarios well: an individual audio stream for each listener is very
inefficient. On the other hand, peoples' listening habits are changing. Unless
it's a news program or a live event, I want it "on demand", on my schedule, not
on a
broadcaster's schedule.

All I have at the moment is a mobile phone and an Internet connection - that's
surprisingly sufficient (and I've been a radio listening enthusiast for

Re: Odd Navigation Results with Web Page under OS X 10.10.5

2015-12-29 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Sabahattin.

I have indeed reported the link to Apple Accessibility with full
particulars of the allegedly locked table. I pointed out that the
page is navigable with the Tab and other keys but that results
produced by pressing VO-left and VO-right arrow are disappointing and
anomalous. They may well tell me to upgrade to El Capitan and Safari
9.0.2, but still, it's worth reporting the problem.

Re: wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi Scott,

Thanks for this. You put me on the right track. Essentially, my issue was a
wifi limitation of the watch, not supporting 5.0Ghz networks if you can believe
that. In 2015. smh. So, I’m also using an airport router that won’t let you
disable a 5.0ghz radio. So, I just connected to my Fios router from my iPhone
instead, toggled bluetooth off/on, and all was good.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2015-12-29 Thread Brent Harding
That's true. I pretty much listen to most stuff streaming these days except
for the little bit of TV, news, etc that isn't always available online, but
the actual AM or FM radio itself isn't something we probably need inside of
a phone. I agree that something has to be come up with to make this way
forward more efficient because using tons of bandwidth to send tons of
copies of the same thing could be what makes things slow once it takes off
to a point where it largely replaces broadcasts.

connection, you can listen to the same station forever if you want, and don't
have to worry about it phasing out just because you're leaving the state. That
was one thing I hated about traveling; we would get used to 1 station, then
about 20 mins or less, I'd have to look again for another station because we
lost the one we were listening to, or just retire the radio altogether and try
to find a tape that we all liked.

Re: iTunes, automatic behavors

2015-12-29 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
iTunes is a pig, isn’t it? It now does many things, a lot of them at startup.

Turn off Wi-Fi sync for each device to stop that happening at startup. This
will of course mean you need to cable up to sync. Or you could try to avoid
syncing by going to the cloud. The option is in each device’s settings. Or
you can reset network settings from the devices themselves: Settings, General,
Reset Network Settings. You will have to reenter Wi-Fi keys if you reset.

Then there’s the store, Genius, Apple Music and iTunes match. Disable the
latter three, if you want. Then make sure, before you quit iTunes, that you
are not on a store page. In the category of media you are in, choose a radio
button other than iTunes Store, for example My Music in the Music section. You
should return there, when you next open iTunes.

iTunes won’t share any content on your network or respond to remote-control
requests while it’s closed. If you need to share (Home Sharing, iTunes music
sharing) or support remote control, the best you can do is leave iTunes
running, but close all its windows. iTunes will still be in the Command-Tab
task switcher, but at least its window won’t distract you. And this is a
quicker way to use iTunes than quitting and reopening the entire app. Press
Command-0 to bring back the window.

Even though I find what you are describing quite annoying, I have learned
patience. The benefits generally outweigh the downsides. You will find that
using the cloud obviates the especially slow process of syncing, although it
has its own downsides too. But there’s nothing quite like going on holiday
with a Mac and a phone and just the lightning cable, where iTunes can’t chatter
away to the network like that, to illustrate what iTunes could be, if it were
only slimmed down a bit. Indeed those other, background processes should not
require iTunes be open to function. iTunes really is a pig.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2015-12-29 Thread Scott Granados
When someone talks about the radio in a cellphone they mean the radio software
and hardware that talks to the tower in the transceiver sense not the radio as
in AM FM sense. Now there’s an exception to that.
Many older phones had AM / FM radio hardware included in the cellular
radio chip. This was because vendors started to use software based radios
which meant instead of building radios out of crystals or phase lock loop clock
based circuits they used digital convertors and software and could make a radio
receive any frequency they wanted just by programming the software to work the
hardware correctly. This meant they included a radio, added a lead to the
headphones for an antenna and bam AM/FM radio. That never was done in the
iPhone to my knowledge. No radio in the software or hardware. Now the radio
hardware is very complex and I don’t think anyone includes that function at all.

Good luck.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2015-12-29 Thread Scott Granados
Few things here, the efficiency point is incorrect. The Internet is much more
efficient for broadcasters. They can use multicast and other technologies to
help manage the streams more efficiently, they get direct confirmable and
trackable access to each listener, they get a lot more demographic and
marketing info, no FCC and associated rules, no engineering transmitter
requirement, no transmitter and high power, tower, etc and so forth. I have a
good friend at Clearchannel that told me they expect someday to have no more
high powered over the air transmitters. The whole thing will be done over the
digital network.
I’m with you, I haven’t used an over the air radio in 5 years. I use
XM or Internet exclusively. I’m not interested in some fat bastard in
washington censoring what I can or can’t listen to on the airwaves. I don’t
want my music bleeped. I want my political content untouched. So a lot like
us have abandoned the public airwaves and more are making the move.

I know, this was the old days, reminds me of old family road trips. XM is
another great solution to the problem of having to change channels. XM got
their start I think being sold in truckstops for obvious reasons.

Re: wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-29 Thread Scott Granados
Ok, so the thing is to make your airport work all you need do is have the same
network name on 2.4 and 5.0 ghz. The SSID and associated hardware addresses
are the same so it joins either way and then uses the best available option
which is generally the 5.0 ghz if available or the 2.4 ghz type N. You
shouldn’t need to change networks entirely.

Not sure the speed FIOS you have but upgrade to the Quantum router if
you haven’t. Much better WiFi including 5.0 ghz and AC.

Good luck

I think this is another one of those features that has to be supported by
the carrier. When I first got my watch, Sprint did not have it, so if the
phone was on Wifi calling, the watch would simply not ring at all. If I
was away and the phone was on cellular, the watch did ring. Now that
Sprint enabled this feature, it works on both. I thought this phone
calling through the watch was over bluetooth, but I guess it is a direct
connection to the carrier you have.

So I’m seeing the lack of watch listed under other devices as well, I just
 tried this.

I am not in range of a WiFi network that the watch could join though.
When I get home this evening I will give t his a more detailed try and see
if I see something different. I’m thinking I may have the same issue
 though but I will confirm.

Macbook Pro and external HDD

2015-12-29 Thread Grant
Hi all,

Is it unheard of to have issues with removable drives after waking a Macbook
Pro? I’ve noticed on occasion my external hard drive appears to be unmounted
after my Macbook Pro wakes from sleep, and I need to disconnect then reconnect
it for it to show up in the Finder. Obviously, this is undesirable as there is
the chance of data loss or corruption, but I wanted to check if others have
experienced this and if there’s anything you guys would recommend checking—for
example, to rule out a hardware issue.

Thanks.
