Ok, so the thing is to make your airport work all you need do is have the same network name on 2.4 and 5.0 ghz. The SSID and associated hardware addresses are the same so it joins either way and then uses the best available option which is generally the 5.0 ghz if available or the 2.4 ghz type N. You shouldn’t need to change networks entirely.
Not sure the speed FIOS you have but upgrade to the Quantum router if you haven’t. Much better WiFi including 5.0 ghz and AC.
