That's what I always thought too. By the time I got my watch around the end of June or early July, Sprint had wifi calling available on the iPhone, outgoing calls could be made from the watch, but incoming had to be answered on the phone. That wifi calling made the watch not receive calls back then. I only first got the ability to have wifi calling on my phone with incoming calls passed to the watch in iOS 9 and Watch OS 2. I'm not sure if that was an Apple bug or sprint's network design. Once I did all the updates and turned on the other devices stuff in iOS, it added some free extra service to my Sprint account that blessed the watch with incoming call abilities.

So here’s how that works. The interface between the watch and the phone appears to be bluetooth. The calls route over bluetooth and notifications are sent over bluetooth. WiFi kicks in if the primary connection to the phone over bluetooth is lost. Once the loss is detected the watch joins any WiFi networks you’ve previously joined in range. Once the phone is back on or in range the watch restores it’s pairing automatically with the phone.

I think this is another one of those features that has to be supported by the carrier. When I first got my watch, Sprint did not have it, so if the phone was on Wifi calling, the watch would simply not ring at all. If I was away and the phone was on cellular, the watch did ring. Now that Sprint enabled this feature, it works on both. I thought this phone calling through the watch was over bluetooth, but I guess it is a direct connection to the carrier you have.

So I’m seeing the lack of watch listed under other devices as well, I just tried this.

I am not in range of a WiFi network that the watch could join though. When I get home this evening I will give t his a more detailed try and see if I see something different. I’m thinking I may have the same issue though but I will confirm.

So, I turned on wifi calling on my iPhone, and have enabled other devices to use wifi calling. In the watch app, I have wifi calling enabled as well. So I turn off my phone, and attempt to make a call via my watch. The call fails every time. Same when making a call to my cell number. my iPad rings, my Mac rings, but the watch stays silent. The watch does indeed have a wifi connection, I double checked that.

I have notice on my iPhone under settings/phone/calls on other devices, my apple watch does not show up in this list.

Yes and Yes. All I did was sync he watch and everything seemed to work. I’m able to place and receive calls. What have you tried and what issue / symptoms do you see with the watch?

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to get wifi calling to work on my Apple watch and having no luck. It works just fine on my Macbook, Mac mini, and iPad but not on the watch.

Has anyone else been able to get this to work? Especially those on the T-mobile network.

Thanks.
