Re: deleting old time machine disks

2015-11-11 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yes, this is a bit fiddly. You’ll have to employ the VO mouse commands to
route to the label that says “Add or remove” with VO-Command-F5 and then click
with VO-Shift-Space. Now you’re in a table listing current and available
disks; choose the one you want to drop and press Remove. Repeat until done.
The backup disks are listed under “Backup disks”. Use Disk Utility to erase
any backup disk you no longer use, if you haven’t already, since those will
have sensitive data on them.

Good luck.

I recommend Pro because it does give you more control and more OS choices.
There again, if all you want is to get a Windows VM up, it hardly matters which
edition you choose. The completist in me is always happy for the extra
flexibility though—things like whether the network adaptor can be promiscuous
or not, or whether the virtualised CPU will have Intel VTX in the guest. It’s
all good.

I cannot remember if this is or is not the case as it has been a while.
However, I think I recall that you must keep the Bootcamp partition when you
use that option. As I say, I cannot remember if that was truly the case or
whether I just elected to keep it but check it out just in case you either
don't have the space or don't want to have to do that and it is an issue.

I also remember having some trouble with this kind of installation with regard
to updating OS X since it relied on Bootcamp and there was a driver issue or
something. It was all during my early days of Mac use so I was struggling to
get a handle on things so I'm not as clear on it as I should be.

Maybe I am just lucky, in that perhaps the apps I have deleted don't have 3D
Touch. But I have definitely deleted apps recently on my iPhone, which is
running the latest version of iOS 9. And deleting apps was no problem.

OK, how about this.

Could it be that you have the 3D touch sensitivity set too high? I mean,
it's unlikely? Yes? I agree, but could it even remotely be possible?

Donna, if you would like, I can try to find out for you where this setting
is, I think it's under settings, general, accessibility, but you can
actually set 3D touch to not be quite so sensitive. Would that be something
you'd be interested in me teaching you how to do?

Re: How to delete apps on an iPhone with 3-d touch?

2015-11-11 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Ditto! I have thus far resorted to using Settings to remove apps (General,
Storage). Clunky, but it works.

Since I don’t use 3D Touch at all, it’s also been very tempting for me to turn
the feature off entirely.  And yes, I already have it set to maximum firmness;
I still keep hitting the blasted thing. But since I have this iPhone 6S, with
its greater weight and thickness, it smaller battery, and also its better
radios, I can’t bring myself to do it without trying at least to make better
use of the 3D Touch feature.

Re: How to delete apps on an iPhone with 3-d touch?

2015-11-11 Thread gs
Hmm. Isn't the default a medium firm press? I left it set to the default and
feel that I must press pretty hard to get it to activate. I'm not trying to be
critical but it might be good to start training not to press so hard. It's a
waste of energy and might contribute to unnecessary issues if one is already
sensitive to something like carpal tunnel or whatever. Double tap and hold
requires only that the finger remain on the screen with a very light touch. Now
maybe there is a hardware issue that is contributing to the problem and I am
not trying to insinuate that this is not the case.

Something To Consider When Updating Your Mac

2015-11-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

You know, I almost hesitate to post the following supposition for fear of
unleashing a firestorm of debate but after my recent experiences updating
several Macs from Yosemite to El Capitan, I am compelled to proceed.

For the life of me, I cannot fathom why some who upgrade from Yosemite to El
Capitan do so with virtually no negative results while others, experience
countless and, according to them, almost catastrophic consequences, from an
accessibility perspective.

I have long suspected the following supposition but have recently begun to
test my hypothesis, said hypothesis being the following:

During the upgrade process, using VoiceOver too soon, can interrupt the
installation and that it is this interruption that leads to the increase in
the number of VoiceOver accessibility problems.

Scenario:
A totally blind person begins the upgrade process or even performs a fresh
install of El Capitan. During this process, several screens are displayed
but near the very end of the process, VoiceOver can be used even though the
installation is not yet complete. Visually, the screen may display
something like Completing Update. This screen is not comfortably accessible
and, as a result, the totally blind person may not realize that there is
still a progress bar that has not yet reached 100%. As a result of this
lack of knowledge, the user begins performing VoiceOver actions including
switching screen focus, etc. When this happens, I believe that the
extremely final installation tasks are not properly completed.

Whenever I install a copy of the OS, I am very careful to allow the
installation process to complete and, sometimes, that final screen can
remain on the display for what appears to be a remarkably long time,
relative to the entire installation process.

During my testing, in each instance in which I did not wait for the screen
to disappear or I began using VoiceOver to interact with the OS before the
screen disappeared, I noticed a significant degradation in the performance
of VoiceOver.

Now again, let me emphasize that this is just a guess on my part and in no
way do I hold that it is a correct one.

Be that as it may, I suggest that this is something to consider when
updating your Mac.

Mark

Re: Something To Consider When Updating Your Mac

2015-11-11 Thread Blee Blat
I had no idea that had an impact. I'll try a reinstall here as I did activate
voiceover during the installation and I do notice some weirdness here. But
that's an obscure bug that we should report if that is the case. They should
find some other way to let you know the installation is done or still
proceeding then if this is a problem.

Re: Something To Consider When Updating Your Mac

2015-11-11 Thread Blee Blat
Except that it reboots part way through the install, if I recall it correctly
then it does some progress bar thing which is inaccessible, which is what I
think is being discussed here. So I don't recall it restarting after that
completes.
So the question seems valid still. How to tell which stages of installation
is it safe to use VoiceOver?

Re: Something To Consider When Updating Your Mac

2015-11-11 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
It's kinda odd that you would have to enable Voiceover yourself during the
install. I don't know if I'm the lucky one here, but Voiceover automatically
turns itself on during that process.
