Re: Fusion, mapping an insert key on laptop keyboard

2014-03-09 Thread Phil Halton
david, can you be specific? For example, there is no insert key on a
MacBookAir, or any of the portable keyboards, so how do you map an "insert" key
that doesn't exist?
If you read my message carefully, you'll see that the procedure I am using, or
thinking about using. Is this how its done? Specifics would be great, like
which screens I need to get into and what buttons to press if not
self-explanatory. Basically, just the "how to" of it.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Virtual machine help

2014-03-09 Thread Phil Halton
You're exactly right, OSX doesn't pass the caps lock key to the windows VM. The
workaround is to remap another key on the keyboard to act as a caps lock or
insert key. Many people remap the grave accent key (above the left tab key and
below the escape key) to caps lock.
This can be done several ways, one way being the use of a windows program
called "sharpkeys". .
Another way, is to remap the grave accent key to the insert key from within
fusion settings themselves, and then Jaws will respond to the grave accent key
as though it were the jaws modifier key, either caps lock or insert, whichever
you setup.

Remember, you can remap any key you want, but the grave accent is rarely used,
and so makes a good candidate for remapping.

I am currently using the grave accent, remapped using SharpKeys, to act as a
caps lock key with Jaws set to use the laptop keyboard with caps lock as
modifier key. It works great for me. Although, I'm going to switch to the
Fusion key remap method just to simplify things and eliminate the need for a
program like sharpkeys.

There is a podcast on how to use the sharpkeys program on applevis.com, search
for "sharpkeys" and it should come up in the search results. . It can be a
little tricky to understand and use the first time, so if you need help and
specific directions on its use, sing out.

BTW: I find that keeping a full-sized Apple USB keyboard around is a big help
when using these remap procedures. I just plug it in and it gives me a insert
key that jaws and NVDA will respond to as their modifier keys. Its really
indispensable when you start changing the modifier keys and need both a caps
lock and an insert key temporarily.

For example, using the fusion method, I find I need that keyboard in order to
have an actual insert key I can press when trying to make the fusion key remap
as there is no actual insert key on the apple portable keyboards.

Re: Fusion, mapping an insert key on laptop keyboard

2014-03-09 Thread David Taylor
Hi,

You are mapping a windows key to a Mac key, so the insert key comes from
Windows, and you map it to a key on your Mac keyboard. You go into fusion
settings with command-e, find the keyboard tab, and add the two mappings. The
effect is that when in Fusion, your Mac key of choice is turned into an insert
key and lost to Mac, but as soon as you go into a Mac app, you get it back
again. If Mac had an insert key, you wouldn't need to do the mapping at all!

Re: Dragon Dictate VS Mac built-in Dictation and Speech Navigation

2014-03-09 Thread Alex Hall
I'd love to know what you did then. I installed a trial of Dragon a few weeks
ago, opened it up, and Voiceover hardly even saw that a window was there. I
could configure nothing, there were no instructions, nothing. Yes, I enabled it
in my security settings.

As to screen navigation, I know someone for whom that is a must. This person
has limited use of one hand and no use of the other, so relies on speech
commands to do just about everything. A headset is a must, true.

Re: Virtual machine help

2014-03-09 Thread Apple boy
This is just so awesome! I honestly thought you absolutely needed Sharp
Keys in order to use Windows on mac properly with screen readers. Now I
see Fusion alone can do this, I will take the easy way out and use the
remap settings in Fusion. Although I'm coming in late to this thread,
I'd like to thank those for showing us this awesome tip. It may just
encourage those who were discouraged previously, myself included, to
re-visit Fusion again.

caps lock key with Jaws set to use the laptop keyboard with caps lock as
modifier key. It works great for me. Although, I'm going to switch to the
Fusion key remap method just to simplify things and eliminate the need for a
program like sharpkeys.

There is a podcast on how to use the sharpkeys program on applevis.com, search for
"sharpkeys" and it should come up in the search results. . It can be a little
tricky to understand and use the first time, so if you need help and specific directions
on its use, sing out.

For example, using the fusion method, I find I need that keyboard in order to
have an actual insert key I can press when trying to make the fusion key remap
as there is no actual insert key on the apple portable keyboards.

desktop keyboard layout for JAWS but am without an external keyboard
now. I'm wondering how people manage on the Mac keyboard with JAWS.
My understanding is that JAWS should be able to use the caps lock as
the JAWS key but I can't get this to work. I chose laptop layout from
the keyboard layout in basic settings but whenever I press caps lock
Voiceover just says caps lock on or off and JAWS acts if I'm not
pressing the JAWS key e.g. if I press caps lock and t for title, JAWS
just says t. It's as if the caps lock key isn't being passed through
to Windows. But this is strange because it works properly when I use
NVDA instead of JAWS.

Can anyone help? Am I missing something? Any ideas why JAWS/Windows
isn't picking up the caps lock? Any other way round it?

Re: Fantasy Baseball on the iPhone?

2014-03-09 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Mike,

I am a big fantasy baseball guy. Love it as I find it's the best way to still
connect to the game that I love. I am happy to report that I have had a
dialogue going with Yahoo's fantasy app developers and they are hard at work
improving VoiceOver compatibility with the app. I have been talking with them
since August, and now participating in a live draft with the app works
perfectly with VoiceOver. Unfortunately, the in season gaming experience is
still being worked on with VoiceOVer. What I would suggest is going to Yahoo on
your Mac or PC going to fantasy baseball where you can find a ton of free
leagues to play in. Find a league that looks interesting to you as their are a
billion different scoring systems. The only draft format that works in the app
is their live standard draft so you would not be able to do an auction style
draft with VoiceOver on your phone, but I am confident that that will be
accessible soon. For now you will have to manage the day to day of your team on
your computer, but I am also confident that Yahoo will have an update to their
fantasy app fairly soon that will improve the in season following of your team
while using VoiceOVer. The great thing is this app is universal to all of
Yahoo's fantasy sports, so moving forward all of the games should work with
VoiceOVer. Considering ESPN has never gotten back to me, I really have to
applaud Yahoo and caring about making their app accessible with VoiceOVer.I am
continuing to work with the development team over there and offer feedback.
Unfortunately there is no way for us to beta test anything, but considering how
unusable drafting on Yahoo was during football season the app has come a long
way. Hope this helps.

Re: Still Some Pretty Severe Bugs in Mavericks

2014-03-09 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Ricardo,

Thanks. Fortunately the sound outage hasn't happened in a few days after a few
restarts. I guess until I can do the clean install I just have to restart the
computer every time it starts to get sluggish. Fortunately it has been a few
days with no issues except for my Logitech k760 not working but this may be a
Logitech issue. It's a shame as I loved using the keyboard but since upgrading
to Mavericks it will only for ten minutes or so before losing connectivity.

Re: mail columns all messed up now

2014-03-09 Thread Brian Fischler
Ilene if you turn the preview pane off then that first column will tell you
unread or replied or the status in classic view of mail. You have to close the
preview pane to get this status read to you as I believe with the preview pane
open every time you go to a message it is considered as read since the preview
pane sees it.

Thanks David, I understand all that, but how exactly do you do the remapping do

insert key to press on the keyboard. Do you understand my question? I am

When adding a remap, in the screen that comes up, I press the great key on the

Subject: Fusion, mapping an insert key on laptop keyboard

Currently I'm using sharpkeys to remap the grave accent key on my MBA to
the caps lock key and vice versa, for use as a jaws modifier key in
windows7. I want to eliminate sharp keys and have fusion map grave accent
to the insert key. I've done this before but forgot the procedure. I think
 its:
 1) in fusions keyboard and mouse settings, edit the profile and "add" a
 key mapping.
 2) this brings up a window where there is a series of checkboxes for
certain modifier keys, and a combo box where you can type a key.
 3) in the "from" combo box, I type "`" (grave accent), and in the "to"
combo box I press the insert key on an attached full-sized USB keyboard.
this puts "extended numpad insert key" in the combo box.
 4) Press okay and make sure key remaps are enabled.

What are others doing to get an insert key (or a caps lock key) passed to
 windows7 vm's?

Amadeus question

2014-03-09 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'm finishing up a project in amadeus Pro in which I have 3 separate
files/documents and I want to turn them into 1 document by adding them
together. I thought I could just go to the end of each file and append the next
document but this is proving more difficult than I thought. Maybe I should do
it in reverse, adding the earlier files to the beginning of each file as that
seems to be where they end up regardless of what I do.

Any thoughts?

Right, if you hadn't turned on your computer in a few days, it would be logical

You might like Linein for that purpose. Linin is a free app that lets you
actually listen to your inputs.

To get it, go here:

It's free and I don't know how any serious audio user on a Mac can do without
it.

Re: Virtual machine help

2014-03-09 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi again,

Ok so I tried to remap keys in Fusion and can't get it to work. I get
to a list of current mappings and press add. I'm then in a dialog
where it seems I'm supposed to choose the key I want to press and then
what I want it to map to. There are some checkboxes with all the
modifier keys, I leave them unchecked. There's then a combobox which
I press and then I get stuck. It seems like it's listening for
whatever key I press but neither the grave key nor the insert key on
my external keyboard are being picked up by this. Additionally the
only way I can get out of this is to press command q to quit Fusion.

Is it possible to do these mappings with Voiceover? Or is it
impossible, in which case I guess that's why people are using Sharp
Keys. Will look for that podcast then, but it'd be good to hear if
anyone has successfully remapped using Fusion preferences...

Fwd: Instructions for remapping keys using VMware Fusion 4/5

2014-03-09 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello.

I have been reading some of the threads re VM Fusion and I sent a set of
instructions to a friend some time ago but did not send it to the Macvisionary
list.

So for all of those who seem to have problems with Fusion, I'm sending this to
the list.

Please note, this will work regardless of what version of Fusion you have as
the interface is the same.

Hope this is helpful for those who are having problems.

I don't at this time have Windows on my I Mac but am happy to assist if
necessary.

Message below.

Re: Another Amadeus question

2014-03-09 Thread Ray Foret Jr
The trick is to go in to the preferences menu and select pitch and speed, you
will find an individual slider for pitch and another for speed. You will
notice that 50% is the normal setting while 100% is double and 0% is half.
Next to each slider, there is a text box with which you can much more exactly
control what the pitch and speed are. You can choose to lock them, in which
case they move together or to unlock them so they move seporately.

protools with voiceover?

2014-03-09 Thread Brooke Jostad
Hi all,
I am trying to figure out to what extent protools is accessible with voiceover.
Any thoughts and experience would be grately appreciated.

Next to each slider, there is a text box with which you can much more exactly

Unable to rEgister Accounts after upgrading Mavricks

2014-03-09 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I did the Mavericks upgrade for security a couple weeks ago. Since that time
I've tried to register information on two new accounts with companies and no
success either time. In both cases the companies say their sites are working
properly.
I've made no changes in my safari settings. I don't get any error on screen. It
makes the clicking sound like it's going on to the next page but returns to the
registration page. No fields are incomplete, no erros on the page. The first
time I really assumed it was me or the site. Now I'm beginning to think it's
some setting in sAfari. It has only happened since the upgrade. Any ideas on
what I should be looking at? What might be blocking me from going to secure
checkout sites.

Only one thing comes to mind, and I doubt this possibility. Ever since Lion
came out, sometimes, Voice Over fails to react properly to VO+space. What

I don't think that's the case here because the page does refresh.

I've seen places where the VO problem with clicking a button link does occur

Booting Mac in Safe MOde

2014-03-09 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I've been researching my previously reported issue with sites not working
correctly in sAfari. It's a known issue predating Mavricks. I need to boot into
safe mode and then just reboot normally. Before I do, I have to change a couple
of things in safari. NO problem.
Will vO work in safe mode? I don't need to log in, but I need to know when it
is loaded. Of course I can just wait a long time too.
But I've not done this so any advice will be appreciated.

There is a podcast on how to use the sharpkeys program on applevis.com,

can be a little tricky to understand and use the first time, so if you
need help and specific directions on its use, sing out.

BTW: I find that keeping a full-sized Apple USB keyboard around is a big
help when using these remap procedures. I just plug it in and it gives
 me
a insert key that jaws and NVDA will respond to as their modifier keys.
Its really indispensable when you start changing the modifier keys and
need both a caps lock and an insert key temporarily.

For example, using the fusion method, I find I need that keyboard in
 order
to have an actual insert key I can press when trying to make the fusion
key remap as there is no actual insert key on the apple portable
 keyboards.

Re: Virtual machine help

2014-03-09 Thread Phil Halton
Hello Cathrine,

I encountered the same problem of getting stuck in the combo box. I found a way
to do the remapping of any key in the "to" combo box to the grave accent key.
Here's what needs to be done.

1) VO to the first shift check box and park the mouse on it by pressing
VO+command+ F5.
2) VO right arrow to the first combo box and press the grave accent key. Don't
open the combo box with VO Space, just move to it and press the accent key.
3) Now VO right arrow to the next combo box and here you do want to open the
box, so press VO Space on it. That'll bring up a list. arrow down and back up
to select the insert key in the list.
4) now to get out of that list, you need to turn of VoiceOver with command F5,
then do a mouse click by pressing down on the mouse pad (careful not to move
the mouse, just press straight down on the pad).
5) turn VoiceOver back on and you'll be out of the combo box and you can use VO
right and left arrows to read your selections and make sure they're right. then
move to and click the ok button.
6) back in the previous screen , the table should now contain your remap. You
can uncheck the "enable remappings" checkbox and the remap will remain in the
table, but won't be active if for any reason you don't want to use it but don't
want to delete it.

BTW: There's no particular significance to parking the mouse on the shift
checkbox, you just need to have it parked on some element so when you click the
mouse after shutting off VO, it'll snap the system out of that weird combbo box
situation. I successfully followed this procedure twice to test it out and make
sure it works before sending the message.
Good Luck.

Re: Dragon Dictate VS Mac built-in Dictation and Speech Navigation

2014-03-09 Thread Maurice Mines
That afternoon, now then reading this message again you
installed a trial of Dragon. Unfortunately the trial and the full version do
not behave the same. For instance I don't know if in the trial if you can make
many adjustments. Two in the flow version however once the product is installed
the screens leading you through the training work for the most part one just
has to interact with much of the training materials as they are based in a
funny type of HTML. But overall I found them to be usable. The other thing you
might want to know is that Dragon uses the TextEdit interface in order to store
its text before you transfer it into an application. Although this is very
confusing to a voiceover user. I would strongly suggest that when using the
application used to set up whatever profile you're going to use and pick from
the options in the speech menu. For instance, I prefer to start my dictation
from a sleep state. This way I can isolate the Dragon functions from the
voiceover functions. But if one wanted to one could start the microphone
immediately by any least microphone on selection for instance. And these all in
very different windows. The best way I know of to keep track of things, if you
can is get a braille display and certainly keep looking at it at all times
because the bell displays can assure you where the cursor is the most part in
Michigan figure voiceovers burial preferences differently. They stated (if not
tried version for yet. But I'm guessing that it is much like version 3 so once
it is installed a blind person should not have many problems with it.

We further note I don't work for the company, but I do use the product
virtually every day. Because of the written expression disorder that I
mentioned last night, without Dragon I probably would not have a job. Have a
good rest of the evening.

after powering on, yes, Voice Over WILL work. Press the power button and then
emidiately press cmd+r and wait for about one minute then press cmd+F5. Voice
Over will sstart and you can do what you need to do.

Now, if you are talking about the true route level of the drive, my
understanding is that Voice OVer will not work.

Bootcamp and upgrading OSX

2014-03-09 Thread Janine Smith
I am considering putting bootcamp on my mac running 10.9.2. I would be
installing windows 8.1. I was wondering what happens to the bootcamp partition
when Apple puts out a new operating system for the mac. I have read reports
that bootcamp doesn't work properly after an upgrade. After the upgrade to
mavericks some people couldn't boot into windows. Has anyone done an upgrade
with bootcamp already installed and how did you get on? Hoping you can tell me
that it won't be a problem.

Thanks. I'm not even talking about training, though - I cannot dictate
anything. I cannot see how to start or pause dictation, access settings, or
anything else. My understanding was that the trial is a time-limited version of
the full program, so in theory I should have full access to all features.
Either way, just dictating would be more than I can do now.

EBay bidding

2014-03-09 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
Does anybody bid on EBay? I noticed the other night that there is an area
which is updated. The time area where it shows how much time is left on the
bid. It is so active it makes it difficult to use voiceover on the site. It

I'm trying to find a way to silence just that area of the screen so I can
navigate the site. Anybody have any ideas on how to do this?

Yes, I enabled it in my security settings.

As to screen navigation, I know someone for whom that is a must. This
person has limited use of one hand and no use of the other, so relies on
speech commands to do just about everything. A headset is a must, true.

Re: internet keeps disconnecting

2014-03-09 Thread Chris Blouch
The two shouldn't have any impact on each other as they are different
radio frequencies and different chip sets inside the computer running
them. I have a Mac Mini on wifi with a bluetooth keyboard and it works
fine. I did have trouble getting dropped from my WiFi one time when I
'upgraded' to a new wifi router. After much fiddling I threw in the
towel and got an Apple Airport Extreme and all my dropped wifi problems
went away. My old router was the old 802.11g and with time machine
backups it was getting a bit slow. The 802.11N has made that work
reasonably well.

All that said, does it drop on any other wifi network?

it seems like the problem was when i am using my wireless keyboard, i dont know
why. every time i use my wireless keyboard, keeps my internet disconnected.
cani make my internet be the first priorities before the bluetooth?

Wire Headset With Mic On Mac Air Or Other Solutions For Dragon?

2014-03-09 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello There,

This is a separate thread, but a follow up to the Dragon question vs. the
native dictation features on the mac I have a wired headset with a microphone,
which was bundled with Dragon Naturally Speaking for my PC. Since the Mac Air
has a single headphone jack that is duel in nature, is there a adaptor that I
could purchase either to plug into the jack or USB port to split the headphone
and mic input? I also have a bluetooth Voyager Pro Plus, which I mainly use for
when I am traveling. Does anyone know if this BT ear piece will work with the
Air and Dragon? I look forward to hearing list members thoughts about this.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Eileen

Calendar Problems Worsen With Latest Security update For Moutain Lion?

2014-03-09 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello Folks,

I am not sure if if I need to report this to accessibility at Apple. I use to
be able to input my appointments in the native calendar app in Mountain Lion. I
am able to select the date and open the inspector to begin the process of
adding an appointment. Here is where I begin to have problems. I tab over to
the "event details" and try to VO-spacebar on it, which use to open the pop
down list. Now, I have to tab into the area and once there even using the right
arrow will not perform the same behavior before the security update. This was
using the right arrow key to move from the heading to the edit field like in
the first choice of "location." I am also having difficulty setting the "from'
and "to" time parameters, with alerts and having problems getting back to the
"done" button to add the appointment to the calendar. Have others had this
problem also? What kind of steps can one suggest that may straighten this out,
so I can use the calendar again? Please advise, as I have also seen some
changes on my iPhone 4 with the new iOS 7.0.6 update. On the phone, I can't
seem to find the list tab to view my appointments.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Eileen

Re: Notifications Arriving in Big Bunches Every few Days

That could very well be. I limited its CPU usage, but don't remember off-hand
what percentage. 25% seems to stick in my head.

I thought notifications were supposed to go to all the devices you have
registered to your AppleID. So at least the part about getting the same
notification on your phone and your Mac makes some sense. Not sure about
 why there are delays though.

What Does the Voiceover cursor Look Like as Shown in the Visuals?

2014-03-09 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hik, all,

I sometimes have trouble with cursor tracking when my sighted husband is
looking at the screen and using the trackpad. I have the mouse pointer
following the VO cursor. I didn't have the visual VO cursor enabled, and he
couldn't find the mouse pointer at times, even when I routed it. I've turned on
the VO cursor visual now. what should I tell him to look for? Does anyone know?

Thanks,
Teresa
