Another scan possibility.

2013-11-25 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Hello,

A couple years back I looked a little at a document organization package
recommended by Tidbits.com (actually I think they sponser Tidbis tooo). It
includes a copy of ABBY Fine Reader as a OCR engine and indexes documents as
they are imported into the database. I never took the time to read the Take
Control of and could not fully appreciate the process. At that time the only
version with OCR was the professional priced around $150 I think now it is
included in more of their products. I doubt I could get another 30 day demo.
But perhahsp we should see if this is a solution that wourks for us.

Tidbits has also had great comments about some of the sheet feeder scanners
that can process 12 pages a minute. Imagine going through all that Snaiml mail
in almost the same time as a sighted person!

Best wishes,

Jonathan

worth the cost to me, but everyone will have a different opinion, as I think
you can see from this thread.

Downcast for Mac is fully accessible and easy to use. The settings are all
easy to configure, and the syncing works really well. The syncing and the
playlist features are why I switched to Downcast from iTunes and Podcasts. I
know Apple has now included smart playlists for podcasts in iTunes, though I
haven't had a chance to use these. Not sure how syncing between iTunes and
Podcasts is working now.

A couple of people have reported problems with Downcast becoming busy and
unusable. I haven't had this problem. I suspect it has something to do with
very large numbers of subscribed feeds. I'm subscribed to around 45, and it
works fine for me. I believe Robert Carter has over 60, and perhaps he can
let you know if it works well for him.

Given you already have Downcast for iOS, when you ask is it worth it I
suppose you mean does it offer you anything the iOS version doesn't. People
have already mentioned storage space, and that's a good point. I also find
it easier and quicker to manage podcasts and podcast settings on the Mac. I
am subscribed to a lot of feeds, and I don't always want to listen to every
episode from every podcast. I can move through the episodes quickly on the
Mac, marking as played or deleting those I'm not interested in. I also have
my Mac hooked up to better speakers, so if I want to play the podcast out
loud I prefer to use my Mac rather than my iPhone or iPad, as their speakers
while good, are sometimes just not as loud as I'd like.

So ultimately only you know whether you want to access your Downcast
podcasts on your Mac and whether that's worth $10 to you.

Cheers,
Nic

Random Walk Simulationin Numbers

2013-11-25 Thread Kevin Shaw
Hi friends,

I'm running a random walk simulation in Numbers with a number of cells
generating random numbers and these cells in turn being referenced across
multiple sheets. In other words, Rows 5 and 7 of sheets 1, 2 and 3 are
generating the random value and every other cell that refers to these cells
fluctuate, including cells in other sheets.

Now in my last sheet, I have 3 values that are the bottom line calculation in
my simulation.

I want to create another sheet that generates this simulation 100 times and
then crete a scatter plot to show a Gaussian distribution so I can generate a
reasonable idea of where the average distribution points are for the 3 values.

So, the easy way to do this is to create a cell that equals the final result.
This is the first simulation. What I need is to create 99 more of those, but
each having a different result. Can anyone recommend how to do this?

Kevin

transferring word tiles through i tunes

2013-11-25 Thread jean parker
Hello All:
No I am not transferring them as spoken files.
I want to read them in pages on my I phone. When I go to the options to import
files it only gives i tunes and some other web service I never heard of as the
options for importing these files.
As I explained, I was able to do it once through i tunes but have not been able
to replicate it again. I don't know why.
Everything is selected correctly in i tunes but the ad button is dimmed.

VLC and Airplay question

2013-11-25 Thread David Taylor
Hi,

I'm having a wierd issue with the latest version of VLC running in Mavericks
where it simply won't play when I select Airplay. It will play to all other
devices. The other thing is that in its Airplay setting, I don't see any way of
configuring which of my airplay devices it uses. Can anybody give any tips on
this please?

Thanks

Re: Paprika Recipe Manager for Mac and iOS on Sale today (November 24, 2013)

2013-11-25 Thread Esther

Hi Jessica and Others,

Here are the download links for Paprika Recipe Manager for the iPhone (and
iPod Touch), iPad, and Mac. All theses apps are on sale in celebration for
(U.S.) Thanksgiving, so they should be good through at least Thanksgiving
Day, and maybe through next weekend. I briefly panicked when an attempt to
check the dates of the sale by Googling their blog turned up an old entry
from last year, when the sale started just around Thanksgiving and lasted
through the Sunday. Had me thinking that these deals would expire last
night!. I've corrected the link to the Mac App Store given in my first
post (and under the AppleVis pp Deal listings) so that this will work
internationally. Also note that the latest version of the iOS apps run on
iOS 7. If you are still running iOS 6 (or earlier), you can purchase the
iOS apps using iTunes on your computer, then when you try to download the
app on your iOS device, you'll get the latest version that is compatible
with your operating system version, and it will be accessible since this
app has been supporting VoiceOver users for a while.

There's also an Android app that is on sale, but that only supports
English, while the iOS apps support English, Bokmål, Norwegian, Chinese,
Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian,
Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish, as well as supporting a
host of international recipe sites.

Not impressed with VMWare…

2013-11-25 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Someone yesterday told me to call VMWare since I cannot use Fusion, which I
just bought, on either of my machines. I did, and I'm shocked. They basically
told me how to submit a request online (which I could have done anyway) and
said I'd have to wait until someone could email me back. I asked if there was
anyone who could just answer me over the phone, and was told that if I wanted
phone support I could buy a single incident support request for $30… That's
half of what I just paid for the entire Fusion program! So now, even though I
haven't even started using Fusion due to their own website/program not working,
I'm waiting for an email from an engineer which will, I strongly suspect based
on my experience so far, be some form letter that may or may not answer my
question. I could see this if I'd been using the program successfully and just
had questions, but I can't use it at all and just want to get started. This is
ridiculous, and I really wish there was another product I could use instead.
Unfortunately, Fusion seems to be the only accessible choice, so let's just
hope I can get this answered relatively soon.

Vuescan 9.4.02 released and fixes the recent problems with Vuescan and Voiceover

2013-11-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Listers,

I’ve been talking to the developer of Vuescan since last night, and he has
fixed the Vuescan problems. Both the 32bit and 64bit versions of his latest
release are now working with Voiceover as they used to. You can download them
from;
http://www.hamrick.com
Please note that the “download’ link will normally download 32bit version. If
you want to get the 64bit version, scroll down the page to find a table where
you can find the 64bit version. It takes a bit of effort to find it since the
table has versions for linux and windows too so be careful. I hope I’m not
going to offend anyone by saying that the mac version must have .dmg extension
at the end of the file name. You also want to see the number 64 in the name of
the download file for the 64bit version. The file name is vuex6494.dmg for
64bit version and vuex3294.dmg for 32bit version. Once you copy the
application file to the application folder, and launch the application, you
should hear Voiceover announce vuescan 64 9.4.02. That’s the most recent
version that fixes our woes.

I’m delighted that Vuescan works again! The developer is a sympathetic guy. He
knows how important Vuescan is to so many of us.

Best wishes

Andrew

Shortcut key for adding e-mail sender to contacts

2013-11-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I thought that once in a message, one could add the sender to contacts with
command+shift+y. But this doesn’t seem to work any more. Is there a different
shortcut key now that would accomplish the same task?

Thanks

Just one of the many reasons I flatly refuse ever ever ever ever ever to
install windows on my Mac. IF I want to use windows, I’ll let Best Buy fix my
Acer windows lap top.

I bought my Mac to use it as a Mac, not clunky crashy unstable windows.

Re: Not impressed with VMWare…

2013-11-25 Thread Teresa Cochran
I started using Fusion to experiment with various Linux distributions. About
three months after I purchased it, there was an upgrade, and I couldn’t swing
the full price of the upgrade, which was the same as what I paid, so I gave it
up. as for Windows, I’ll probably go the Bootcamp route if I really want it,
though I haven’t so far.

Hi Alex:

Can you tell us what happens when you try to run the program? Did it not
install, or did you have problems downloading? Or, some other problem?

Won't hurt to run it by us. Maybe one of us has experienced something like the
problem you're having.
Just a thought.

Unfortunately Vmware are one of those companies despite doing excellent

Re: Not impressed with VMWare…

2013-11-25 Thread Alex Hall
I have a person calling me back at 1500 today, so we'll see how that goes.

On my Mini, I have a version of Fusion that is who knows how old, that says my
key is invalid when I try to paste it in (no, there are no extra spaces). I
can't check which version it is, or check for updates, because all those
options are dimmed. On my Macbook, I can't download Fusion at all - the EULA
agreement seems to not work correctly and the "accept" button is never enabled.
I've even had a sighted person try to get past that, and nothing works. My Mini
is using Bootcamp, but my Macbook is for demonstrations for clients and has
very limited space (64gb). I figured that Fusion would be better on it so i
would not run out of space or anything and so I could quickly switch from one
to the other to compare them during demos. Since Fusion comes with three
licenses per purchase, I figured I may as well put one on my personal Mini so I
could play audio games (the only time I use Windows) without having to reboot.

Could Use some Automation Advice

2013-11-25 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi everyone, I’d be very grateful for any advice from people with much more
knowledge of Automater and Apple Script than I have.
I have what I think is quite a simple task but I’m not sure about the best tool
or method for achieving it.
What I want to do is set up a key in VO so that when in the edit field for
typing a tweet in Night Owl/YoruFukurou, I can press a single key that sends a
specific string, then presses Return to send the tweet. I want to do this to
send a hashtag I use regularly so the string is always the same.
The idea is that I would write my tweet, then include this hashtag at the end
by pressing this single key.
I’m not sure if using Apple Script or Automater is the best way of getting this
done, and what the process would be for either. I know how to use the commander
to assign either a workflow or a script to a key, but actually getting the task
automated is where I’d appreciate the advice.
If anyone can provide some advice and examples, I’d really appreciate it,
thanks.

Boot Camp partition

2013-11-25 Thread Antonio M. Guimaraes Jr.
Hi all,

I have an instance of Boot Camp running on my Mac. it is only 50 GB in size,
and I am running out of space.

I am looking to run music production software in windows, cakewalk, and keep
talking scripts with jaws. These are huge resource hogs, and I will need boot
Camp for them.

Will I be able to repartition my drive including the 50 gigabytes I already
allocated to my existing instance of Boot Camp?

I would like to give windows 100 GB or so, but would hate to lose the 50 GB
already used up.

I will scrap my current instance of Boot Camp for a brand-new one.

Thank you for all your help,

Antonio

Re: Could Use some Automation Advice

2013-11-25 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

How about setting up a dictionary shortcut? Like for example, many people use
this feature on there iPhone when texting. You would write I don’t know., and
it would expand out to I don’t know. You could use 2 symbols like gl and would
expand to your hash tag. I know its not very elegant, but, I think it would
work for you.

Re: Not impressed with VMWare…

2013-11-25 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Everyone.

I can only say that VMWare have been very good to me so far.

Although I have the latest Fusion, I have not put Windows on my I Mac.

Last year, I accidentally bought 10 copies of Fusion 5! At that time my basket
said 1. So once I realised that I had bought 10 copies, I was frantic.
Imagine, over 900 pounds.

So I went on to their website and acquired a local number for the UK.

I rang them at 10 in the evening and thought they would be closed. But they
were not.

So I got through to someone and explained everything and they were only too
happy to help.

Once I rang off, they sent me an e-mail and said they would make it a high
priority request due to the amount of money and because as they pointed out,
other customers had had the same problem.

After that, they e-mailed me a few more times to tell me what was happening and
eventually after a few days passed, I called again to ask if there was any
progress.

Soon after that, some one rang me up specially to tell me that my request was
being dealt with and after six business days, my money was returned to me.

So I have been very careful when I purchased Fusion 6.

Well done. I am happy that we can update vuescan again.

Ripping own dVDs using Handbrake

2013-11-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I wonder whether someone would be so kind as to write off list to me with some
tips regarding ripping one of my own dVDs using Handbrake. I’ve tried to
convert a dvd of mine so that I could import it into iTunes but I’ve failed
miserably. I have chosen a source, i.e. my dvd and I’ve pressed the start
button, and I’ve got a file on my disk. But it plays with a stutter, so it’s no
good really. There must be more to it than just pressing “open” and “start”.

I’d appreciate any tips.

Best wishes

Andrew

Will Safari be continuing support for Mountain Lion for a while yet?

2013-11-25 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all, I know 10.9 Mavericks is out and that It has the latest version of
Safari which is 7 on the new OS. However, I am still using Mountain Lion and am
going to stick with this previous version for a while yet. I have my reasons
for this.

What I'd like to know is that after a newer OS update comes out, will the
version of Safari for Mountain Lion which currently as of this writing stands
at 6.1 be the last version or as I am hoping does Apple continue moving Safari
forward on older OS's for a while before dropping them.

I have my reasons for not liking the new changes in the area of Voiceover and
am thinking next time I like an update to Safari then I'll just stick with that
version. Yes I'd rather use a version that is fully functional and working with
Voiceover rather than features added which I'm sure are bugs but at times I
think I'd rather sacrifice usability to security. If you know what I mean in
the ways of updates.

I hope people understand this and respect where I am coming from.

Looking forward to learning the answer.

p.s.
Would be great to know as well for those who linger on older Mac operating
systems do you still recieve updates and if so what kind of updates are they?

Re: Shortcut key for adding e-mail sender to contacts

2013-11-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

1. You need to know the exact name of the menu item. I believe in this case
that it is “Add Sender to Contacts”.
2. Go into System Preferences and choose Keyboard.
3. In the Categories Table, choose Application Shortcuts, down near the bottom
of the table.
4. Stop Interacting with the table and navigate to the Add button then press
it.
5. Change the application to Mail from the Applications pop-up menu.
6. Enter “Add Sender to Contacts” into the Menu Item field.
7. Enter the key combination you want. Be careful to not choose one already
used by the application or system. * chose cmd-option-shift-c
8. Press OK.

That should do it.

Later…

Re: Will Safari be continuing support for Mountain Lion for a while yet?

2013-11-25 Thread eric oyen
well, if Apple keeps true to form, it won't be long before they update beyond
where we can go. I made the mistake of upgrading to Safari 6.1 here on my Lion
system and now if behaves oddly. When browsing through web pages, the Headers
don't get read properly (half of them don't show up in the web item rotor).
Surfing to some pages that are heavy with Java now cause voiceover to reset
when attempting to load items in the web item rotor. Other issues include text
being read 3 or more times, web links in google search also get read outside of
their domain (such as in detailed results, etc.).

My system is just old enough not to support Mt. Lion and, from what it sounds
like, Mavericks will be even more problematic. I have yet to receive any
meaningful response on this from apple (all I get is the typical form letter
response). What does it take to get someone at apple to realize they really
screwed up?

anyway, thats my rant.

The FN Key

2013-11-25 Thread Scott Rumery
Hello,

I have just received my new wireless keyboard that I am loving except for one
thing. On the right side of the spacebar the 3 keys are: Command, F/N, and
Control. Now me being right handed and all I would prefer to have an option key
on the right side of the spacebar so that it would make using VO a bit easier
when I need to press a key combination that is on the left side of my keyboard.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the F/N key into an option key?

Thank you,

Scott Rumery

FIX FOR DOWNCAST BUSY

2013-11-25 Thread Jesus Garcia
Okay, folks for those who are having this issue see below. this worked
for me, and as the tech support folks say they are trying to work this out.

NOV 25, 2013 | 04:23PM EST
George replied:
Hi Jesus,

We're working on this and hope to have it fixed in the next release. For
now, I suggest trying this:

1) Close Downcast
2) Open Terminal
3) Run this command in Terminal: defaults delete
com.jamawkinaw.downcast.mac

That will delete your Downcast preferences. The next time you start
Downcast you should hit CMD
+ R after it starts up to refresh all your podcasts. Since this is
deleting your preferences, you'll need
to then re-enable iCloud settings so you get back in sync with your
other devices.

Thanks,
George

Hi

Has anyone tried to install VmWare Fusion on an external SSD with Thunderbolt

Take care

Re: Paprika Recipe Manager for Mac and iOS on Sale today (November 24, 2013)

2013-11-25 Thread Alex Hall
Thank you. I got the iPhone version earlier today and have not yet added
anything to it. I have about thirty recipes in Pepperplate, so I really hope
I'm able to export them somehow! I also looked at the Mac version, but it is
$10, way more than I want to pay. Thanks for the information, though - the
iPhone version looks really nice so far.

VMWare questions

2013-11-25 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I finally got VMWare Fusion running! I guess I complained enough, because they
called me back within an hour, had me set up a remote access program, and did
everything for me. I'm still not overly impressed with their support,
but at least they fixed this.

Now, though, I have some questions. This is on a Macbook Air with 4gb of ram
(total, not for the vm only). I will set up Windows on my Mini soon, but want
to iron everything out on the Macbook first since my Mini is my primary machine.

1. According to Fusion's preferences, ctrl-cmd should toggle keyboard/mouse
control between Windows and Mac, but that does not always seem to be the case.
Voiceover usually grabs keystrokes, almost randomly at times, and the caps lock
modifier does not work at all. In addition, keyboard commander keystrokes are
grabbed, so windows-b executes my battery script instead of jumping to the Task
Bar. This, of course, means I cannot reliably control Windows, and cannot
access the NVDA menus.

2. The default behavior for closing Fusion is to suspend open VMs. Is that
okay, or is it recommended that I shut them down instead?

3. Windows seems quiet relative to OS10. Is there a way to turn it up? It may
well be Windows' volume, I haven't managed to check yet (see #1).

Thank you in advance, and I am sure I will have more questions as time goes on.
As I said, I really want to nail down any possible problems before trying this
out on my main machine. However, I am demoing Windows to a client tomorrow,
using the Macbook, so it would be nice to have better control over Windows
before then. (Yeah, I put this one off, but in my defense I never expected so
much trouble with VMWare).

Re: Installing OSX on a 2TB WD Drive

2013-11-25 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I have done this in the past week though using the Lion OS. The disk does have
to be partitioned very specifically and Disk Utility hides the partitioning
scheme in the option button.

Take a look at the partition tab of Disk Utility and hopefully you will
understand.

Best wishes,

Re: Could Use some Automation Advice

2013-11-25 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I looked at the Night Owl program and it does not accept Apple Events. For the
dictionary idea if you go to keyboard system preferences there is an area to
set up keyboard expansion. I understand this also syncs with the iPhone too.
Quite a few folks like Keyboard Maestro which interacts directly with the
Apple's accessability API's to add task and text expansion.

I don't know any blind folks that currently use non-Apple keyboard expansion
utilities at the moment.

Adam Angst did write up how he automated publishing e-books to PDF and ePUB
using a keyboard macro tool. You should be able to find that article in the
TIDBITS.com archive.
Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Another scan possibility.

2013-11-25 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Sorry about being vague yesterday. I was thinking of DEVONthink but I did not
know how to spell it. There is a Take Control book on the product that came out
at the same time as Take Control of Your Paperless Office. Both books were by
the same author and shortly after they came out I got DEVONthink as a demo and
found the scanning worked but was confused as to how to actually organize
things. There have been several releases since. Also, I believe it is one of
the products that you can get a discount for if you are a tidbits.com paid
subscriber.

Can you let the list and myself know how well your trial with this works?

Thanks,

Can't Expand Conversations in Mail

2013-11-25 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi everyone, I'm stumped by an issue my partner is having on her Macbook Air
and wonder if anyone can tell me what I'm missing?
When I'm in a list of email messages grouped by conversation, pressing
right-arrow on my Air expands that conversation and lets me down-arrow through
the individual messages. But on my partner's computer, group by conversation is
selected in the View Menu, and conversations are collapsed. When we press
right-arrow to expand the conversation, we get the error ding. I've tried
enabling and disabling the toolbar, hiding and showing the mailbox list, and
all kinds of other stuff, but no matter what I do I can't get right-arrow to
expand the conversations. Yes, quick-nav is definitely off, and I've tried both
interacting with the table and not. I can't immediately see a difference
between my system and hers and it works for me and not for her. We're both
running Mavericks.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks.

I’m also having this problem but am able to expand the message with VO+Space.
Left arrow works to collapse it. Not sure why this is happening.

Re: Can't Expand Conversations in Mail

2013-11-25 Thread Les Kriegler
Jonathan, I experiences from time to time as well. When this occurs, I am Lord
voice over with command F5. Then I start using the down arrow and right arrow
keys. Once the right arrow does not result in a dang, the problem is usually
resolved. And then reload voiceover with commander five and all works until I
happens again usually several weeks later.

2013-11-25 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Whenever this happens to me, which is very rare, what I do is turn off voice
over, then, press the option key plus the white arrow. Then, I turn voiceover
back on, and all is well. I hope that helps.

Hi everyone, I’d be very grateful for any advice from people with much
more knowledge of Automater and Apple Script than I have.
I have what I think is quite a simple task but I’m not sure about the best
tool or method for achieving it.
What I want to do is set up a key in VO so that when in the edit field for
typing a tweet in Night Owl/YoruFukurou, I can press a single key that
sends a specific string, then presses Return to send the tweet. I want to
do this to send a hashtag I use regularly so the string is always the same.
The idea is that I would write my tweet, then include this hashtag at the
end by pressing this single key.
I’m not sure if using Apple Script or Automater is the best way of getting
this done, and what the process would be for either. I know how to use the
commander to assign either a workflow or a script to a key, but actually
getting the task automated is where I’d appreciate the advice.
If anyone can provide some advice and examples, I’d really appreciate it,
 thanks.
