Re: Is it true in Mavericks that iTunes contact syncing has gone?

2013-11-14 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi Tim, many thanks for your detailed email. I have a couple of questions I'd
like to clear up.
1. You say "the On My Mac section" could you explain what this is?
2. I have gone into my contacts app that is placed on my doc, and have
navigated to name table and have highlighted them all with CMD a.
Then I went to file, export, export V card…Then saved the VCF extension to
location I can remember.
This is in the hope that should something mess-up would I be able to restore my
contacts back into iTunes/contacts with this .VCF file?
The last thing I want to do is lose all of them which I'm sure anyone will
understand.
If you could confirm if this method will restore my contacts if something
should go horribly wrong that would be great.

Thanks

Re: Help with OS 10.9, VO and Navigating Website with Frames

2013-11-14 Thread Steve Holmes
I have also experienced this but I am not on Mavericks yet. I think it
came with the most recent version of Safari regardless of OS
version. The main place where I experienced this was on the safeway
shopping site and I have to login to demo this. thus, I would have a
hard time reporting this to Apple without giving them access to my
account.

I wasn't sure if it was a Safari issue or something funky with that
particdular site.

Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I was checking my Twitter feed today, when I came across a link that I think
might help. It is a way to basically reset finder so that it no longer consumes
so much CPU. I have not tested it yet, I have a feeling this might help with
the problem that a lot of us are experiencing where Finder goes busy in certain
views. It is worth a try, if nothing else, but be advised that you will have to
redo all your settings. This would include file extension views, custom views,
tab and window preferences, sidebar and desktop preferences, and more. Still,
if it works, it would be worth it. Here's the link so you can give it a try.

Reading a lengthy document in Text Edit

I have a rather lengthy document that I am reading in Text Edit. If I stop
reading the document in order to do something else and then want to resume
reading where I left off, how do I do this?
When I press VO A the document starts reading from the beginning again.
Thanks.

Re: Reading a lengthy document in Text Edit

2013-11-14 Thread Alex Hall
It took me a while to figure this out, but the answer is pretty simple. When
you open it TextEdit document, you don't actually interact with the text
automatically. Make sure to hit the interact keystroke before you leave
TextEdit, so that VoiceOver will remain on the last place you stopped. If you
don't interact, voiceover will always start at the beginning, as you're seeing.

dictation on Mac locks up the system

Hi all,
Most of the time, dictation on the Mac is amazing. Twice now, though, I have

Re: Is it true in Mavericks that iTunes contact syncing has gone?

2013-11-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

1. The On My Mac may have been removed in Mavericks as I can’t locate it
anymore either. Or, it could just be not there in my situation since I have no
contacts stored locally. The best thing is to check in the Groups Table, in
the All iCloud section to make sure all your contacts are present. If when you
go under the All Contacts section instead, and there are duplicates, then
you’ll need to search out where those duplicates are hiding. If there aren’t
any when in the All Contacts area, then you’re good.

2. Your procedure should work fine. Those vCards can be restored into the
Contacts app using the Import menu item.
syncing was simply a service within iTunes so that your contacts could be moved
over to iDevices.

Later…

FYI, the iTunes app really has nothing to do with contacts, these contacts are
stored independently of iTunes. The Contact

Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
Below is what I received from Apple Accessibility concerning this issue. I had
written in about this because it was driving me crayy. I have a lot of files on
my Mac, and if I do the wrong thing then I have to deal. I know what I can do
to work around it, but I just had a frustrating time trying to copy a folder
because of this. Personally, instead of setting things over, I'm just going to
keep going like I am until this bug gets squashed, I hope ASAP. I think doing
work arounds is better than trying to redo your system to work around this.

  Greetings Eugenia,

Thanks for contacting Apple Accessibility. Unfortunately this is an issue that
our Engineers are already investigating. This only happens with VO enabled and
browsing in Column view. It can occur if a folder has anywhere from 30 files or
over 500. I apologize that there is nothing that can be done at this time to
fix this issue. Not even a reinstall will help. You will have to browse the
Finder in another view such as List. The only real fix for this issue will come
packaged in a software update. I also apologize that I am unable to provide if
and when this update will be released. I hope you're at least able to get used
to List view until we can take care of this one.

Apologies,

Apple Accessibility

Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Alex Hall
The only other view that seems usable is List View. I tried it today, though,
when I was copying 36 files from one folder to another. Despite VO telling me I
was two levels deep into a folder, I ended up pasting those files into the
top-level folder and had to go erase them all from there, then paste in Column
View. Still, given what Apple said, it seems a clearing of the preferences
won't help, unfortunately. At least I read your message before I tried it.
Thanks.

Navigating Listview, was Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Teresa Cochran
Where in the folder structure do you go in list view to copy and paste? I
understand that you have to be inside a folder. I’m actually getting used to
list view now, and the arrow keys work the same way as in column view.

Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Phil Halton
don't forget that pasting is different in list view than in column view. In
column view, you can just highlight the folder you want to paste into and hit
command v. In list view, you have to first open the folder. A good way to make
sure you're on the right destination folder is to check what folder name finder
shows in the title bar by vo left arrowing past the toolbar. Whatever name is
reported there is the folder that will receive your pasted items.

Re: Navigating Listview, was Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Alex Hall
I haven't worked that out, but I do not find arrow navigation to work as well.
Sometimes folders refuse to open or close entirely, and even if a folder does
close, I have to press the left arrow two or three times to get that to happen.
Ialso don't like how VO will keep reading, and worse, searching as you type,
past the end of the folder you are currently viewing. You can be browsing way
down inside a folder structure, then one wrong letter and you've been jumped
back out to land somewhere else in the top level. Yes, you can arrow up or down
to try to find where you were, but it is still incredibly frustrating.

Hi!
OK just in case did you open the folder with Command+O or with the arrows?
If with arrows you might find the items pasted like it did for you!
But with Command+O that should open that folder and be the only place you can
paste into!

Wow! You too? The thing is I can't even get my Type2phone thing to work at all.
I can do as much as go home and lock my phone with it, and that's it, and I had
this problem with the old OS already too for awhile; it worked great at first,
but then it wouldn't work, and now mavericks for sure doesn't work with mine at
least, except to lock or unlock the phone (press the powerButton), or the home
button. Nothing else works, no typing, no moving around, nothing. What's up
with that? I know I had the latest update too, so that's not the problem, at
least not if it was doing this on Mountain Lion already.

God Bless!!!

May The Lord Bless you and keep you; May his face radiate with joy because of

Re: Navigating Listview, was Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

In List view, the right arrow expands the folder you’re on which is confusing.
To open the folder you should use either Cmd-Down Arrow or Cmd-o. To go up a
level, press Cmd-Up Arrow.

You can collapse all the expanded folders in your window by pressing Left Arrow
repeatedly.

I always use List view as I find it more logical than column view.

Cheers,

Anne

Oh, that’s a great tip. I also just discovered that command-left-bracket will
take you back to your previous folder view, with the folder closed.

Slow down; you'll get there faster.

Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks for the tips everyone. No, I only used the arrows to open the
subfolders, so that was probably my problem. I still want Column View back, but
at least this should help me deal with List View better until then.

don't forget that pasting is different in list view than in column view.
In column view, you can just highlight the folder you want to paste into
and hit command v. In list view, you have to first open the folder. A good
way to make sure you're on the right destination folder is to check what
folder name finder shows in the title bar by vo left arrowing past the
toolbar. Whatever name is reported there is the folder that will receive
 your pasted items.

Re: Possible Fix for Busy Finder

2013-11-14 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again Alex
That's why I out the message in a big hurry. I didn't want you to spend a lot
of grief after the message Apple sent me.

Now let me offer a suggestion, although it's a pain, for dealing with this. I
finally figured this out after I kept copying files and couldn't find them. I
had to keep doing command z to undo what I had done since I knew that if I did
it right, the new files would be right next to where VoiceOver said I was.

I have found that i I go to my desktop, go to my hard disk and if necessary
press command 2 to get list view. If you're lucky, you won't have everything
expanded, but if not, you might want to press control option backslash so that
everything collapses from the top. In my case, I go to Users by pressing down
arrow. Then get next one. If you want your documents, uncollapse with the same
command and try typing in the first letters of the word documents. Oh, yeah, I
forgot to say to interact before you start this.

I know you can go to Documents other ways, but I have found that with this
problem, you are always where you think you are. Also, Finder busy may happen.
I have found that if I start at the top then I end up in the right place to
copy files. I have also found that in the long run, it saves me time because I
don't copy stuff where I can't find it.

I have also found that if you have a small number of folders so that Finder
doesn't go into busy, that column view does let you copy your files into the
right place. However, I don't know for sure until it's too late.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: How well is terminal working in Mavericks?

2013-11-14 Thread Peter Durieux
Hi Garry,

Just a quick note, I just use a vm with Debian wheezy and brltty to do all my
console tasks.
terminal is accessible, but jumping to cursor position is missing for me as
well.

Looking forward to what the mavericks guys here will tell us :)

Re: getting to the top of a page or document

2013-11-14 Thread Alex Hall
There are two options. Command-up arrow will move you to the top of a text
area, such as an email or file you are writing, and is not a Voiceover command.
Function-vo-shift-left, if memory serves, is the "top of window" Voiceover
command and works anywhere. That latter one may move you out of a text area
though, since it is only trying to jump to the first thing in the window and
has no concept of text, whereas cmd-up (or cmd-down) will move in only text and
have no concept of the overall window.
