Hi everyone,

2013-03-27 Thread Johnny Angel!

I goofed something up in mail. Now whenever I either close or delete the last
message in a conversation, mail places me back to the top of my inbox list.
Does anyone know what I must do to correct this annoying behavior?

Blessings,

JC

Right. That turns off the backlight which saves a bunch of power. F2 to bring

Main problem I've had with using Windows keyboards on the Mac has not
been connecting them but that the option and command keys get flipped. Normally
from left to right on laptops it is function, control, option (alt), command but
on windows keyboards they probably won't have the Function key and the
command/option keys switch places. I think there is a way to remap those keys
so the go back to their normal places but I eventually got tired of it and went
with an Apple keyboard. To be clear, non-laptop Apple keyboards also lack the
function key since that is usually for doing things like change the speaker
volume or dim the screen. Speaking of which, you can get a lot more battery
life out of your laptop if you turn the brightness all the way down by hitting
F1 about 16 times.

Re: The Rotor Option.

2013-03-27 Thread Eugenia Firth
Yes, the rotor works like it does on the iPhone if you have one. When I can,
I'll look it up and tell you more but yes if you turn the trackpad commander
own with the control option and then take two fingers and twist them to the
right on your trackpad, you were here a little musical tone and voiceover were
satrap pad Cmdr. on. I have found that I need to turn it off if I'm doing
typing on my MacBook Pro. This is because things tend to happen when I don't
want them to. So, I turn it on and off as needed.

Hi,

In writing, an ellipsis is used as an "an intentional omission". The
detailed text can be omitted either for reasons similar to the one Pam
gives, where the writer doesn't want to go on listing details, or
because the content of the quoted text is familiar, and the writer
doesn't want to quote it in its entirety, such as CB's example in
giving the opening words of the Gettysburg address. It can have the
sense that Chris uses, of there being more content that follows (which
for reasons of length are not described). In written essays,
articles, or reviews, you might use an ellipsis where you're quoting a
source, but are omitting parts that are secondary to the main point
being made.

You can't turn this feature off in VoiceOver, because it's giving you
information that is part of the menu options, but you can always press
the Control key to keep VoiceOver from announcing the whole phrase.

Strange problem with iPhone 4 S

2013-03-27 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I have had my iPhone for S do something weird twice, once today and wants
yesterday. I had gotten the low battery at 20%, and I ignored it. I figured I
was going to go down to 10% and then plug it in. I was lazy, and I didn't want
to get up out of my chair. However, my iPhone when I got to around 13% never
made it to 10%. Voiceover said and he was in the middle of saying the word
malfunction I think. All of a sudden, my iPhone was dead. I tried Plett
pressing the PowerKey five times, and that didn't work. I tried pressing the
power key and the home key together, and that didn't work either. So, I plugged
in the charger, and after about 30 seconds or so for a minute, voiceover came
back on and everything was fine. Has anybody had this happen with an iPhone 4S?

GG

To be clear, non-laptop Apple keyboards also lack the
function key since that is usually for doing things like
change the speaker volume or dim the screen. Speaking of
which, you can get a lot more battery life out of your laptop
if you turn the brightness all the way down by hitting F1
about 16 times.

Re: Wireless Keyboards.

2013-03-27 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I'd also like to point out, since the subject is about wireless keyboards, you
can only turn down the keyboard backlight on your macbook with the actual built
in macbook keyboard. You can't use the function keys on a wireless keyboard to
do this.

Spell Check Just Stops Working in Pages

2013-03-27 Thread Brian Fischler
Yet another unbelievably frustrating problem with Voiceover and PAges.
This happens all the time, as spell check just stops working. When it
works properly I can go trhough a document click VO shift m, drop down
to spelling and go through my document and spell check will pull up
the words I have mispelled and offer suggestions for the misspelled
words. Then what happens when it doesn't work, like now, is I do the
same exact thing, and spell check doesn't offer any word corrections,
and will not move through the document from word to word that might be
mispelled. It just stops working, which is so amazingly frustrating
when I am on deadline for an article. Anyone have any ideas as to why
this happens or a way around it? I am a pretty good speller, but type
pretty fast and sometimes the keyboard doesn't register a letter, and
I can't turn my work in with misspellings. Would be nice if Apple
Accessibility actually finally got around to making some voiceover
upgrades in mountain lion, as it has been close to a year with zero
improvements or updates. Thanks

Re: Spell Check Just Stops Working in Pages

2013-03-27 Thread Brian Fischler
Just figured I would let the list know I called Apple Accessibility,
and although they couldn't figure out why my way of spell checking
wasn't working, they did suggest the command semicolon way of spell
checking a document. Of course, the funniest part about calling the
accessibility line is the customer service reps try walking you
through things while they themselves are not using voiceover, so it
kinds of defeats the purpose, but after explaining to them how to use
voiceover, we were able to figure out how to navigate the spell
checking menus using command shift semicolon and then VO and the
arrows to navigate the menus. Hope this helps someone else if they
have the problem I ran into.

Finder acting strangely.

I've just noticed last night, that for some reason when I do the

Make sure you're on your finder desktop, then try that command. Also, if you go
into preferences for Finder, you should be able to check off the boxes related

Re: Help with RSS and Twitter feeds

2013-03-27 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Brian, it's not your lucky day I'm afraid. Twitter has phased out RSS
support, and yes Google Reader is being discontinued at the end of June.

In terms of alternatives to Reader, there's a lot of flux just now. Digg is
supposed to be building an alternative platform, and there is another called
Feeddly. I had some accessibility issues with their iOS app though.

The developer of my iOS RSS reader of choice, Feeddler, indicated that Feeddler
wouldn't be going away and that we should await further developments. So it may
pay to stick with Reader until closer to the time to see how things pan out.

Hi folks,
I don't know, GG if you have any vision, however, I do have some, though not
much. As your phone runs down or is charging, A box in the center of the screen
when it is locked gives a visual rectangle showing battery percentage. When it
gets below 20% it changes color. My theory is that it is running on its reserve
much like your mac would when its battery is down, it will tell you it is on
reserve power. My ipad II & my 4S do the same as you describe when their
battery is nearly dead. Hope this helps.

It comes with a Chess game, but I've never played it before, considering the
fact that I'm not good at Chess, but aside from that, I've tried the Rsgames

I'm not really sure aside from that sense I don't get a chance to play games

I think the only game the Macbook Pro comes with, is Chess, in your
Applications folder. The best place to find more games is the App Store, which
probably is on your dock. Both PokerHD, and BlackjackHD, are accessible.
Don't remember the cost of each right off hand, but that's 2 that I know of
that are accessible. If you have some vision, you might also enjoy
McSolitaire, which I think is free, but the free version only offers Klondike.
Anyway, check out the App Store for more ideas. Hope this helps.

Re: E-mail Questions.

2013-03-27 Thread Brandon Olivares
A few ways. If you go to the dock (VO-d), then hit right arrow until you get to
mail, if you select it it will open it up. I usually just use spotlight, and
type in mail, then press enter, or I have some keyboard shortcuts set up for
common applications like Mail, Safari, Messages, etc.

There are rules available in preferences for performing certain actions when
messages are received. You'd probably want to look there.

God bless,

voiceover reset

2013-03-27 Thread May and Noah
Hey there everyone.

Some how my mac voiceover settings reset and I can't remember how some of them
are suppose to be set.

Whenever I press the tab key now it doesn't go to the next item for example, it
jumps to the search field. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

Thanks.

Re: E-mail Questions.

2013-03-27 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi Anita,
I really would strongly urge you to take the advice of many on this list
regarding listening to the David Woodbridge podcasts from Applevis. By
listening to him accomplish various tasks, you will learn how to open
programmes, use the dock, and navigate VO utility etc. It really is worth
taking some time to quietly listen to these things and you will get a real feel
for the Mac. That's what I did and really helped me learn those basic things.
People are happy to help, but part of that is helping yourself too.
www..applevis.com and search for mountain lion.
even if the particular task he is demonstrating is not what you need, the
principles he uses of how to get around and how to open programmes etc will
really help you.

Re: Help with RSS and Twitter feeds

2013-03-27 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Jonathan, Yes, since posting this I have done some searching and
discovered that the latest code Twitter is using has destroyed
receiving RSS feeds of Twitter accounts. I guess Twitter really wants
to keep you on their page for those advertising bucks. My main reason
for using RSS is so I can read important twitter accounts on my own
time and not miss anything, like all my blind tech news. What do you
use for a Twitter client? I have been using Night Owl Yourufiroo but
unfortunately lists don't seem to work well with that client as it
will only load the last 20 RSS feeds. It will load all of the tweets
but you get some really loud annoying chirp once you get beyond the 20
most recent tweets when it goes to read the tweet. I know there has
got to be another way. Thanks

Hi Anita,
This is a very helpful guide to getting started with voiceover directly from
the apple website. It will introduce you to voiceover along with basic OS10
commands. Hope it helps.
