That is a software process that allows the phone to work on other carriers if you put in a new SIM card or want to take the phone to another carrier for service. If that sounds complicated to you and like something you wouldn't bother with, then today's news won't matter to you. But if that's something you've done before or have thought about doing, then you should know that starting today it is illegal to unlock a subsidized phone or tablet that's bought through a U.S. carrier. Why now? Starting today, the U.S. Copyright Office and Library of Congress are no longer allowing phone unlocking as an exemption under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). You can read the full docket here but, in short, it is illegal to unlock a phone from a carrier unless you have that carrier's permission to do so. If you're wondering what this has to do with copyright, it turns out not much. "It wasn't a good ruling," Rebecca Jeschke, a digital rights analyst at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), told ABC News. "You should be able to unlock your phone. This law was meant to combat copyright infringement, not to prevent people to do what they want to do with the device they bought." Of course, the carriers prefer the new rule because it ties your phone to their network. U.S. cellular carriers sell phones at a subsidized or discounted rate with a contract. You pay the network for service on a monthly basis and they give you the phone for a cheaper price than it actually is worth. When it was legal, people may have unlocked their phone to resell it when they upgraded to a newer model or to use it with an overseas carrier and take advantage of local rates when they traveled abroad. If your phone has already been unlocked, you are grandfathered in and won't face any legal issues. But what could happen if you unlocked your phon

Re: accessing dictionary
Also, you can highlight a word with shift option left or right arrow, VO shift m for context menu and the first option is look up + the word highlighted , EG, I just selected "Context" so the option is "Look up Context".Choosing this lets you use dictionary, thesaurus or wikipedia. This is wonderful. Any word you want info on, bang. You write a word but find your using it too often, go look up the thesaurus for an alternate word choice. Google search is another option from the context menu so it's all very quick and easy. My daughter says she has extra dictionaries on her school MacBook and I'd love to know where and how to get them. I'm always trying to remember what letters American words skip. :-) Now I'm off to play with the dictionary. Re: Accessibility of tax Filing process
Hi Cheryl. First, how far have you gone in this process? If you have not already started sending through your state's web site, you may be able to send both your federal and state at the same time. Although there are some issues with accessibility which I can further explain if you need to know, I have been using Tax Act at taxact.com for the first time this year. I finally figured the best way do it to make the process work better. If, however, you have gone far enough in the process where you're ready to send in the papers, it sounds like you could scan them and send them. However, I for one would be a little skeptical about doing that because it would be difficult if not impossible for you to check the accuracy of what you sent in. I guess our sighted friends get to look at the image before they send it in. (The state should be yelled at for doing it this way because it's not the best accessibility choice. It's been my experience, as a former blind IRS employee, that the federal systems are usually more accessible than the state's. At least that true for Texas.) If you use a web site like taxact.com however, you can type in the W-2 information yourself so that, although it's a pain to edit, you can do it if you make a mistake. If you get all the information together first so that you can input it all at once, the process is easier. Presumably you can do the same with the state information although I have not tried it since Texas doesn't have a state income tax. But I notice there is a choice for state questions and answers for putting in the information. I hope all this makes sense. If I can help you further, please ask. That is all you would get from single user mode. single user mode only has the very basic of programs running. It will not even set up your network. So, you could run single user mode, configure the network with ifconfig commands. Start sshd and then start terminal on a second machine and ssh into the first machine. Re: Single user mode?
Overview of Single user mode: Think of DOS in 1984. Or Apple 2 computers. More details: Single user mode is the mode where UNIX operating systems only have access enabled on the console and have just enough processes running so a sighted person can interact with the computer. If there are additional disk drives, network connections they are not started. Essentially when the operating system startup gets to the point where daemons are started it does not start those daemons but instead starts up a UNIX shell. When the UNIX shell is exited with command-D, then the rest of the operating system startup will be processed. It is really only useful for running some specific utilities. In older UNIX systems where it was essential that there be multiple Disk drives present then when one of those essential disks failed automated boot checks the UNIX system would come up in single user mode. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. RE: [IDevices] It's Now Illegal to Unlock Your Phone
Chris, This is what I understand from Iblog. It's fine to jail break but unlocking the device is illegal. They passed a law in 2010 to allow the jail breaking of the devices. But in turn this means that just cause they passed a law the Apple technicians that work on the devices do not have to accept the device with jail brokien code on it so the word is if you want your device fixed just restore to the Apple stock firmware. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Christopher-Mark Gilland Sent: January 28, 2013 1:45 To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [IDevices] It's Now Illegal to Unlock Your Phone So, then does that mean if I jailbroke, then used a tool to unlock via the jailbreak it's illegal, or only if I do it through other means? Re: Accessibility of tax Filing process
Thanks for the information; I had been planning to use Taxact but saw the state's free e-file and wanted to investigate it. I haven't done anything yet except go through the forms manually and figure everything out as to refund amounts so I will know what I'm doing when I actually file. So if you input the information, which is certainly possible, does this eliminate the need to send attachments after receiving the acknowledgment of the receipt of your return or does Taxact do this for you? I definitely do intend to complain about the inaccessibility of this system; there is plenty of information on these documents that can be validated by directly inputting instead of having to send the attachment with scanned files. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. "It wasn't a good ruling," Rebecca Jeschke, a digital rights analyst at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)

Re: program that will back up macintosh drive and bootcamp drive on osx?
Time machine is a file-copy backup solution which means it has to have the OS running to read the files and stash them away. If you want to backup multiple partitions and partitions that are not OSX format then you're going to need a disk-based backup that just reads the raw blocks and mirrors them elsewhere. Probably Carbon Copy Cloner. The CCC FAQ says it will backup a bootcamp partition but it won't be a bootable backup: http://help.bombich.com/kb/troubleshooting/can-ccc-back-up-my-bootcamp-windows-partition They point to some windows backup software to run on that side. Re: accessing dictionary
Hello Danny and Kerri, First of all, you can access multiple dictionaries on your Mac. If you open the Dictionary app using any of the ways Rachel described earlier, such as using spotlight (Command-space bar, then type the first few letters of the app, such as "d i c t" and press return) or from Finder, by using the Command-Shift-a shortcut to move to the applications folder, again typing the first few letters of the app you want, like "d i" to move to the app, then pressing Command-down arrow to open, you can open your preferences menu for that app with the Command-comma shortcut. Under your app preferences you can check boxes for any of the dictionaries that you want enabled. For example, while the New Oxford American Dictionary is selected for U.S. users, I can also check the box for the Oxford English Dictionary which uses British English conventions. Mountain Lion also added a large number of dictionaries in other languages. Once you've checked any additional dictionaries you want added, close the preferences window with Command- w. Now any additional dictionary or thesaurus that you've checked will appear as additional sources you can check, along with the your default dictionary, thesaurus, Wikipedia, etc. However, if you only want to check "what letters American words skip", you don't need to add other dictionaries to look this up. Highlight the word you want to look up using Option-Shift-Right or Left Arrow as previously stated, but when you bring up the context menu with VO- Shift-M you want to show spellings and grammar. That window has a pop up menu button that you can navigate to and change from "Automatic by Language" to specific languages like "U.S. English", "Australian English", or "British English". You can also move to the last entry with Command-Down arrow and, if you were typing in TextEdit, choose "Open Text Preferences" to set the specific language pop-up button you want to use for spelling. (I have multiple languages and voices set up on my Mac, so my settings may not be typical.) You probably don't want to change your preferences permanently to look up alternate spellings, though. And there's also a "Learn" button in the previous spelling and grammar window if you want to add words or abbreviations and not have them flagged by the spell checker. The Multilingual Mac blog posted on Sunday that as of OS X 10.8.2, the Dictionary.app has modules for US English, British English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese, and provided links to a few sites for adding other (language) dictionaries. (Not all these sites are in English, and some of the modules may not be up to date.) Re: the amazing slowdowner for IPhone
I found it quite good with vo. I wrote a little review on the blind-guitarist list that may show up on google. It's been a while but from memory the sliders are like some position sliders. Double tap and hold and with out lifting your finger off, moving left or right moves from low to high or along the timeline and moving up or down sets how small or large an increment you move. Have a play with the sliders and if it doesn't make sence, I'll play with the app and write proper instructions. Danny. Hello, Honestly, I've been using an IOS device since 2009, when 3.0 was released. Ever since then, I've read or, come across 1 report that mentioned some battery draining issue. I'm not saying the bug has never existed for some people on, some devices. But, I honestly don't remember it ever being a big issue except for the standby bug where devices weren't properly going into standby. I really wouldn't worry about it. Re: how do I remove a mailbox from my favorites bar in apple mail?
Move vo to the mailbox in the favorites bar, then route the mouse there (vo-cmd-f5). Disable cursor tracking with vo-shift-f3, then lock the mouse down with vo-cmd-shift-space. Move vo to somewhere in the mail window that has nothing in it, like a splitter, and route the mouse again, then unlock the mouse button with another press of vo-cmd-shift-space. That should do it, but if it fails, close Mail and re-open it, then try again. Also, don't forget to turn cursor tracking back on with vo-shift-f3. Warning about Apple TV Update. Do, not, pannick!
OK, I wanted to let people know based on my experience not just of this update, but the prior update as well... if you go to update your Apple TV, 2nd or! 3rd gen, it doesn't matter as in both cases you'll probably see this... if it seems on step 2 to just sit there at about 65 percent and hang, don't? pannick! It'll take about 30 minutes, but eventually, I promise! it will? move! Don't unplug it, or you might risk bricking the thing. Also, once at about 75 percent, it's gonna hang for all eternity, literally most likely. I mean, this sucker sat there and basically seemed to stall for at least! a good 2 hours on my end. It might just be a connection issue at that time. It took me about fifteen minutes for both on mine, but I have a friend who had a similar experience as you. Can't comment on Apple TV since I don't have one but my iPads took only about 15 mins to complete and my iPod took well over an hour, all on the same network with a couple of iPads being further way from the router than the iPod. It's really just a guess more than anything else, to be honest. What I do also is I actually connect my Apple TV to my Apple Time Capsule directly via an ethernet cable instead of using the wireless method for updates. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but it's how I was advised to do it when I first got my Apple TV. Take Care John D. Re: Warning about Apple TV Update. Do, not, pannick!
Another thing to consider prior to considering that it could be an issue on your end, is the time that you actually perform the update. For example, if for example 10,000 people were downloading the update well you started the update, it may go fast and tell 70,000 people connect at about 65% of your download. This will densest slow your download down. Just something to consider. http://empoweringtheblind.com Empowering the blind, one step at a time. thanks, Esther, I do want to change some of the dictionary preferences you listed as I'm Canadian and we sometimes use British English conventions. Re: iTunes gift card
Hi Kerri, If you redeem an iTunes gift card for your account, purchases will always first use any available credit in your account before charging your credit card. If you're left with $.50 credit and your purchase is for $0.99, the balance of your credit will be used, and then your credit card will be debited for the remaining $0.49. So there's no need to disable the automatic payment feature. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Jan 28, 6:19 pm, Kerri wrote: > Hello, all. RE: Warning about Apple TV Update. Do, not, pannick!
Hello Chris, I experienced the same hanging problem on my Apple TV, just as you described. Earlier this evening, my Apple TV got stuck at 60% for about 40 minutes. I got tired of waiting and unplugged the device. After waiting 30 seconds or so, I plugged my unit back in. The Apple TV started without a hitch. Next, I went back into settings and selected the Download update option, again. This second time, the update went through without a hitch. Thanks for posting the warning as I am certain there are many who will think their device is broken. Re: Buying Acapela: This? is driving? me? Crazy!
Hi Chris, The Assistiveware site still lists Origin Instruments Corporation as a third party vendor. They were the designated sellers for purchases in the U.S. and Canada whenI bought Infovox voices. I'll paste in the contact information for their customer support and the web page URL for buying the voices at their site. Origin Instruments customer support: Voice: 972-606-8740 Fax: 972-606-8741 Email: supp...@orin.com Address: Origin Instruments Corporation 854 Greenview Drive Grand Prairie, TX 75050-2438 Their web page URL for the voices is: http://www.orin.com/access/infovox_ivox/ HTH. At least you'll have a contact point if you have questions. Actually, rebooting definitely helped tremendously, but it still after about 30 minutes started it's big mouth again. Chris Gilland. I'm just shocked that you didn't brick your device by unplugging as you did. Shwieuw! you were lucky! Chris Gilland.
