Hi Kerri, If you redeem an iTunes gift card for your account, purchases will always first use any available credit in your account before charging your credit card. If you're left with $.50 credit and your purchase is for $0.99, the balance of your credit will be used, and then your credit card will be debited for the remaining $0.49. So there's no need to disable the automatic payment feature.
