Vmware Fusion

2012-10-16 Thread Chris
I want to tell you all that I finally bit the bullet and purchased
Vmware Fusion over the weekend after contemplating whether to go down
the Bootcamp root or not. I felt unsafe doing it on my own and not
having sighted assistance all the time that I decided against it and
went down the Fusion root.
I have to say I am very pleased with the product. My virtual machines,
if set to 4 processors and the recommended memory when setting up the
virtual machine run near natively to say the least.
So if you want the best of both worlds and you are in a similar
situation then I suggest you spend the 40 quid and get Fusion.

Deleting messages in mail on iPhone

2012-10-16 Thread Beefcakes
Hi everyone, why is it that there are some messages in my email program that
came with my iPhone for S that I cannot delete certain messages. I've tried
different places to delete the messages and they don't go away! Any ideas for
this? Thanks a lot, John

Re: Removing VIPs

2012-10-16 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

If you have an I phone, go into your mail. Not the inbox but in the list where
all your boxes are displayed such as sent items, drafts etc.

If you move through the list of boxes, VIP will be displayed.

Press enter on it or double tap using your I phone. then you will find the
option to add VIPS. Your contacts will open and you can search in the normal
way. Once you have found what you want, double tap it and you will see the
contact has been added.

Re: Please teach me how to... legally!... copy a DVD

2012-10-16 Thread Shen
I'm a bit surprised the moderator of the list has not piped up yet.
The simple act of copying in itself makes it illegal. There is no such thing as
making a legal copy. That's why they have copy encryption, to prevent people
from making copies.
Having said that, there are lots of ways of getting around the copy encryption
and grab the content of the dvd into your hard drive. In order to do that,
again, you will have to strip out the copy encryption. So when you put it back
onto a blank disc, it will not contain copy encryption. At that point, by
definition, is no longer a copy of your original disc.
Also, most commercial dvds use dual layer discs, which means it will most
likely be more than 4.7GB. You can purchase dual layer blank discs. But if you
want to fit the contents on a single layer, you will need to compress the
content to fit.
A simple Google search should go a long way in helping you find a software that
suit your need.
Good luck.

Re: Vmware Fusion

2012-10-16 Thread Cheryl Ann Homiak
Yes, i have to say that I am pleased also with vmware fusion. I was
frustrated when I was running xp on Fusion 4 just because it seemed slow but I think part of
that was because I had been running it on my mac mini and should have
changed more settings when I transfered it to the new Macbook Pro. Knowing
that the demise of xp is near, and not being brave enough to wait and grab
windows 8 right away, i just bought and installed Windows 7. One of the
things i like about VMWare Fusion is that I can install totally
independently as long as I have the product key, and if I have a major
problem I can delete the virtual machine and either drag and drop an
earlier backup of it or simply reinstall it. I tried to help a friend with
a problem she had with Windows last weekend and was once again reminded
that, at least for most of us, simply reinstalling native Windows
independently isn't an option; I've heard there is a way to set things up
to do this but it definitely can't happen out of the box. My Windows 7
installation in VMWare is running very nicely, especially since I upgraded
to vmware 5, and so now I am thinking that I won't decide to do bootcamp
at this time. I also have an Arch installation of linux as a virtual
machine; I am mostly a debian user, but Arch worked better with vmware
fusion for me because I could first boot into the cd I had burned and be
in the linux environment and then run the install. It is possible to
install debian on vmware also, as I did that at one point, and probably
various other linux flavors as well. Again, when I ran into a problem in
upgrading my linux vm, I simpy dragged and dropped a working backup as
another vm until I could figure out how to remedy the problem. Both with
linux and Windows vmware installs, one can also have as much or as little
sharing with the Mac system as one wants and I do find it convenient to be
able to share some things. At any rate, I am at this point very pleased
with vmware fusion, especially because I like the independence. I'm also
considering purchasing memory from Crucial and upgrading from 4gb to 16gb,
which might not be necessary right now but should help performance as more
developments occur. I know there can be advantages to bootcamp and even to
separate linux machines (I still have some old Thinkpads running debian
linux) but I would say that vmware fusion is well worth some consideration
and particularly if sighted help isn't easy to obtain.

Hi,

This isn't necessarily true. Yes, it is illegal to make copies for mass

Re: iOS6 alarm sounds very quiet

You know, I think that was the problem. I haven't tried an alarm yet, but the
volume was set to 12%. Oddly, I had change with buttons on, but the volume was
still that low even though I used the buttons to turn the volume up to well
past 12%. Oh well, hopefully this fixes it. I'll check my sister's phone later

 Hi all,

With vo on, alarm sounds are turned way down, so that I could easily, say,
sleep through an alarm clock or miss a timer alert. As I said, I'm hoping
this is a vo setting of some kind, but I have a bad feeling it's an iOS6
problem. Anyone else found this? I find calendar sounds to work normally,
though admittedly I haven't heard many since the upgrade so could be
mistaken. However, alarm sounds from the clock app and a third-party alarm
app both don't work. Clock sounds (timers and alarms) are very quite,
while the third-party app seems to mute itself after a couple seconds. As
I said, this is a big problem as I use my iPod for an alarm clock. Any
 advice would be great. Thanks.

Re: Vmware Fusion

2012-10-16 Thread Phil Halton
I'm about to go the VMWare Fusion route myself. I have bootcamp running
great, but want to have them both. My question: How does setting four cores
affect the Mac side? I have an iMac with an intel I5 4core processor running
at 2.5 ghz and 8gb ram. I want to find an optimum for VM and Mac. So, I'm
wondering, if I give ample resources to VMWare, will it adversly affect the
Mac side? Like, if I give two cores and 4gb ram to VMWare, does that hinder
Mac performance? I guess I don't completly understand the whole Virtual
machine thing.

Can you expound on this a little?

Subject: Vmware Fusion

I want to tell you all that I finally bit the bullet and purchased Vmware
Fusion over the weekend after contemplating whether to go down the Bootcamp
root or not. I felt unsafe doing it on my own and not having sighted
assistance all the time that I decided against it and went down the Fusion
root.
I have to say I am very pleased with the product. My virtual machines, if
set to 4 processors and the recommended memory when setting up the virtual
machine run near natively to say the least.
So if you want the best of both worlds and you are in a similar situation
then I suggest you spend the 40 quid and get Fusion.

Re: looking for an accessible radio app

2012-10-16 Thread Jacob Schmude
Hi
Sounds like a job for Airfoil from:
www.rogueamoeba.com
It can take any audio from your Mac and send it to any Airplay device. It
actually uses some of the same code as Audio Hijack Pro, so if you already have
that installed, you won't need to install the system plugins. Alternatively, if
you have a new enough Mac, you may be able to use Mountain Lion's built-in
airplay functionality, though I'm not sure if that works for any airplay
devicesw or just the Apple TV.

problem specifying criteria for smart playlist in iTunes

2012-10-16 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I'm trying to create a smart playlist in iTunes. I want to make sure that all
of the songs by a prticular particular artist are automatically added to this
list. Here is my problem. The artist is not British and I have albums which I
purchased from iTunes which in which his name and album name are spelt with
Latin characters but also albums where his name is spelt in non-Latin
characters.

Now I have specified the criteria to be artist is and the name in Latin
characters and that works but only for the albums where his name is spelt in
Latin characters. If I add another criteria which specifies: artist is and name
in non-Latin characters then my smart playlist is suddenly empty with no
entries and iTUnes gives me a warning that some of my criteria clash. Can't I
specify two different artists in my criteria? What am I doing wrong?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew

Re: messages question

2012-10-16 Thread Jacob Schmude
Hi
You'd have to do the same thing that you did to get MSN on iChat, namely run it
through a jabber gateway. There's still no MSN support, and I wouldn't hold
your breath waiting for it. Microsoft keeps the MSN (now Windows Live
Messenger) protocol tightly closed, and third-party clients only work with it
due to reverse engineering which isn't strictly legal (although it's a grey
area in US law since there's no encryption and it would be done for
compatibility purposes). As this isn't something Apple is likely to risk, you
probably won't ever see this in Messages. If you still need support for it, I'd
say your best bet is still Adium at this point.

As far as I know and iMessage is a text message. I have not seen a way to tell

really annoyed: videos still not playing in Safari

2012-10-16 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm really getting frustrated with Safari. For weeks now, it has refused to
play videos, such as ones embedded in articles. I've found the frame with the
video in it and tried the original player, the 720p or whatever the highest
option is, and nothing ever happens. Is there some magic I need to do to get
things working again? I used to be able to play videos fine, but now nothing
works. Any ideas? I know I wrote about this a little while ago, but I am still
having the same trouble. Yes, I can use Mactubes for youtube browsing, but that
does not help if I get a youtube link or find a video on some other website.
Thanks.

I didn't see whatever you posted before; I probably wasn't on the list
then, so I am sorry if this is repetition for you but can you please
tell me the following?

What do you mean by the "original player"? Can you please specifically
give the name of it and the version.
Can you play youtube links when you search for them in google and activate
the link that tells the length of the video? If so, some videos are
playing.
Can you send a link to a specific website where you can't get video to
play?
Are you running Mountain Lion and the current version of safari? if not,
what are you running?
You say that videos used to play. can you recall anything that might have
happened, an upgrade or change in your system, that occurred around the
time they stopped playing?

Flash is certainly a possibility. Usually you will notice a warning
about that eventually though. If in doubt it doesn't hurt to go to the
adobe website and check what the newest version is.

Re: really annoyed: videos still not playing in Safari

http://features.slashdot.org/story/12/10/16/1919237/jonathan-coulton-re-records-code-monkey-for-us?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=twitter

I just tried Youtube, and it does work. As I said, though, I use Mactubes most
of the time for straight youtube browsing. I guess, then, that it is embedded
videos that don't work, sorry for the lack of proper testing on my part. So,
flash is obviously working in some way... As to the "original player' thing, I
meant it literally: I see a bit of text in the video frame that reads 'use
original player". When I vo-space, Safari is busy for a few seconds, but
nothing happens. I've also tried the links to the different quality videos a
bit further in the frame with the same result. I am running the very latest
everything on a 2011 Mini and have a resonably fast wifi connection with few to
no buffering problems, and I'm the only machine pulling significant data on the
network most of the time. I can't recall anything at all that would have
contributed to the problem.

Re: i message on iphone was: messages question

2012-10-16 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi
My understanding is that you just send a message as if it were a text message.
If you are connected to wifi, and your friend has an iPhone, it will send as an
iMessage automatically. You can't determine it yourself.
So just connect to wifi and ensure you are sending to an iPhone and you'll be
sending as an iMessage.
Hope that helps.

I've never found a way to accomplish this. They can be sorted by subject, but
the from line is still read first.

Hi.
If you go into classic view this is possible. The mail grid becomes a

but I'm guessing with a bit of work it could be done with voiceover.

Re: I Am Not Alone and Resolution To Mail Problem Discovered

2012-10-16 Thread Steve Holmes
Humm, that's strange. I have two gmail controled accounts here and I just
looked in my Mail setting preferences and I keep all messages on the server.
When I send messages, they normally will be kept in the Sent folder on gmail
and that is mapped to my Sent box in Apple mail. I also have filters set up on
gmail for all my lists and when I send a message to the list, I end up with a
copy of that message in the respective folder for that list. All has been
working fine for me. I use IMAP and am running latest version of Mail under
Mountain Lion.

It seems that there are so many different ways to configure Mail on the Mac; no
wonder people keep having issues and others can't duplicate them due to
configuration differences.

NLS on the mac?

2012-10-16 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Quick question: how, if at all, can NLS books be read on the mac? I know
there's no iOS solution yet, but I'm hoping there's something out there for the
mac. I'm not an NLS user (yet), but am asking on behalf of a couple people who
have/may soon switch to the mac. Thanks.

Hi Alex, At present there is no way to read nls bood on any computer, that I
know of. You need a player such as a victor stream. you can download books
from the mac to an sd card. or, a card from nls or a thumb drive and then play
them with the player. hdh

Battery announcing script

Hi all.
I was wondering, i just purchased a macbook air. I really enjoy the machine and
it is very speedy.
I have taken the script that somebody gave me to announce the battery but i am
having the strangest problem.
I have looked up at the status bar and the percentage is much greater then the
script is reporting.
Is this a normal thing?
Should i just not use the script?
Thanks for any help.

Re: problem specifying criteria for smart playlist in iTunes

2012-10-16 Thread Esther
Hi Andrew,

What's happening is that you have created two rules for your smart playlist,
and there are two possible ways to apply them: by matching "any" of the rules
or by matching "all" of the rules. By default, when you create the second
rule, which might be "Artist is " and avoid the artificial
distinctions of having the artist's name spelled different ways by different
labels. The other advantage is that you would be able to use the column
browser, and specify the option to "Use Album Artists" under the "Column
browser" sub-menu under the "View" menu on the iTunes menu bar. In instances
where there is an "Album Artist" field entry, this entry would be used instead
of the "Album" field, and you could also make your selections in the column
browser according to a single spelling for the Artist's name. You may find
that simply being able to use the column browser to select by "Album Artist"
that you supplied may remove the need to create a separate smart playlist.

Incidentally, while use of Unicode characters for non-Latin characters should
work perfectly for iTunes on the Mac, there used to be some instances where
importing non-Latin characters to iTunes on Windows didn't always handle
characters correctly. This was true some years ago, and I don't know whether
the problem still exists. So if you wanted to export a playlist to use in
iTunes on Windows and were using non-Latin characters in the tag fields, these
wouldn't always appear correctly.

I usually work directly with a single set of rules when creating a smart
playlist, but another way to approach this process is to create separate smart
playlists (e.g., one for each spelling of the artist's name that was used), and
then to create a smart playlist out of your existing playlists. The criterion
would be "Match any of the following rules", and the individual rules would be
"Playlist is ". The intermediate step makes it easier
to check your individual playlists before combining them with the final smart
playlist, and can help troubleshoot complex smart playlists which have many
different levels of rules, and where the final result may depend on the order
in which those rules were applied.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Best braille display

2012-10-16 Thread Emrah
Hi folks,

What is your recommendation for a braille display that is well suited to
mobility, offers excellent warrantee, is discrete and has good battery life?
I guess I am looking at something under 20 characters, and I don't need braille
input / typing on the display.

Along with your recommendation, a pricing range would be most appreciated…

Thanks in advance and all the best,
Emrah

Quickly Accessing Websites with Shortcut Keys

2012-10-16 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi everyone,

I need to be able to quickly access various online dictionaries and translation
resources, and I know there is probably a way to do this. I know, for example,
that you can press cmd+1, cmd+2, cmd+3, etc. to access things like Wikipedia,
Youtube, etc. How can I either add to this list or modify an existing
assignment?

I looked under "Help" but the shortcut keys didn't seem to have what I needed.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,

Harry

Re: NLS on the mac?

2012-10-16 Thread Jacob Schmude
Plenty of rumors along that line, but I can't really credit them. They've been
flying around ever since NLS made their position and their support for
specialized devices clear. I personally don't use them even though I'm in the
US. There are plenty of other sources for books that work on far more
mainstream devices (Bookshare, iBooks, Audible, etc). Some are equally as
proprietary in their way, but at least work on mainstream devices as opposed to
ridiculously expensive book players that cost more than a 32 gigabyte iPod
Touch and can only do one function. I refuse to pay that kind of money for what
is, essentially, a glorified talking mp3 player with technology five years out
of date and with absolutely pathetic sound quality even compared to an iPod,
which isn't exactly the winner in that category.

Re: Quickly Accessing Websites with Shortcut Keys

2012-10-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Harry,

To put a new item in the Bookmarks bar, just do the usual Cmd-d but select
Bookmarks bar in the pop up menu. As you add an item, it shunts the last one
out of the Bookmarks bar. You can see which is where by going to the Bookmarks
menu and looking under Bookmarks bar.

Cheers,

Anne
