I'm a bit surprised the moderator of the list has not piped up yet. The simple act of copying in itself makes it illegal. There is no such thing as making a legal copy. That's why they have copy encryption, to prevent people from making copies. Having said that, there are lots of ways of getting around the copy encryption and grab the content of the dvd into your hard drive. In order to do that, again, you will have to strip out the copy encryption. So when you put it back onto a blank disc, it will not contain copy encryption. At that point, by definition, is no longer a copy of your original disc. Also, most commercial dvds use dual layer discs, which means it will most likely be more than 4.7GB. You can purchase dual layer blank discs. But if you want to fit the contents on a single layer, you will need to compress the content to fit. A simple Google search should go a long way in helping you find a software that suit your need. Good luck.
