backing up iPhoto library?
Okay, so I see an export feaature in iPhoto, and I did it even though it says the size was only 10 gb for 22000 photos. Also had some presets for quality and format that I just left alone. My question is, is that the way to do it,or will I lose some quality or features if I go to import in to another iPhoto library, should I back the whole thing up from within pictures, or was this the right way? For a quick example we’ll get rid of Samantha – sorry Samantha, you sound lovely but you take up too much space – so we will be deleting Samantha.SpeechVoice. Select that folder and either drag it to the Trash or hit Command+Delete to place it there automatically. Because the voice files are contained in /System/ you will need to authenticate with the administrator password in order to delete the file, so type that in, then you can empty the Trash. No need to really copy the entire Pictures folder. The iPhoto Library is packaged up nicely within the Pictures folder and it's all you really need to copy if what what you're wishing to do is make a copy of your same Library on another machine. How do you guys deal with mail msg storage? I understand the benefit of storing my msgs on my mac with spotlight and all, but is there a way to keep an eye on how much space they are taking up? Re: mail storage
Not sure I would worry about it. Compared to modern computer disk space it's probably not worth your time to weed out mail all that much. For example, your email was about 8k of text. That means if I get 50 simmilar messages in a day we have 400K. At that rate, a full year would take about 150MB. Most folks nowdays have hard drives sized somewhere north of 100GB, so you could store 7 years of email with 1% of your disk space or less. Even if you take more space than that, if would have to be significant before having much impact on your disk space. Even if you do have a smallish hard drive, a 250GB 2.5" laptop drive is running around $65, so what is your time worth? CB On 5/4/12 1:35 PM, Traci wrote: How do you guys deal with mail msg storage? Re: backing up iPhoto library?
True, there might be some other folders in there, but they will be a very small amount of stuff compared to iPhoto. So if you just want a backup and to do it manually when needed then you can just copy the iPhoto folder to your backup location and you're done. No need to export stuff or do other fiddling. Next thing to figure out is how you're going to move them and that depends on how they can be connected. If the destination machine is a laptop you can put it in target mode and just use it like a big expensive external hard drive and copy the iPhoto library to it. If it's on a network you can share the backup machine's hard drive, mount it on the machine with photos and then copy the iPhoto library to it. If that's wireless then it could take a while depending on how much stuff there is. You might think about going wired temporarily just during the copy to speed things up. Then you're only limited by whatever network hub you use. If the machines are close together you could even connect them directly to each via Cat5 and share over that at Gigabit speed, which is basically faster than most hard drives can go. Re: mail storage
That sounds like storage on the Gmail server. A lot of that gets weeded out by Google (trash, spam, etc.) You can set the Mail client not to leave messages you download on the server. As for storage, I use Time Machine backup. I have had to restore mail folders from it once, but it works pretty reliably. I also make a habit of creating a mailbox right in the folder list for messages I want to save for later, which I call "Archive." I've done this for years. Re: Keyboard Layout Questions
Hi Earle, If this is a recent iMac purchase, the answer depends on what your friend bought. When you order an iMac on line, you can configure it with either a full size wired keyboard that includes the numeric keypad or an Apple Wireless keyboard. If the Apple Wireless keyboard was selected, then the layout of the keyboard is exactly the same as on your MacBook Pro and any other laptop except the latest model MacBook Airs, which do not have an "eject" key in the top right corner. If this is a wired keyboard with numeric keypad, then there's no Fn key in the bottom left corner of the keyboard, and the bottom row of keys has the three Control, Option, and Command keys to the left of the space bar, with the same three keys mirrored (Command, Option, and Control) to the right of the space bar. The arrow keys are moved to a separate group to the right of the main keyboard and are full height instead of half height keys -- the up arrow is lined up with the Shift keys. There's a six-pack of keys that are Fn, Home, and Page Up level with the delete key and number key row in the main keyboard area, and forward delete, End, and Page Down level with the qwerty row of letter keys. The half-height keys for F13, F14, and F15 are just above this six-pack. (Note: this assumes this is the latest model keyboard from the last year or so). To the right of the set of controls with arrow keys and six-pack of home, end, page up and down, etc. keys is the 18-key numeric keypad with an additional 4 half height F-keys (F16-F19) above it. The enter key in the bottom right corner is double height. You can have your friend enter keyboard help mode (VO-k to enter, exit by pressing the escape key in the top left corner), and find out all the keys. I think that as of two years or so ago, the default is to give you an Apple Wireless Keyboard with the iMac unless you request the full-size wired keyboard. You can get either, but you have to know to ask if you want the full-size keyboard with number pad, and that is only available in the wired option. HTH. Mail problems explained.
Okay, a bit of work ahead but I do feel vindicated on both accounts. First, regarding the problem, not being able to send mail consistently, as some of you suggested early on, guess I'm going to do what Apple wants and switch to imap because the pop mail is definitely busted somewhere. So as soon as I figure out what to do in Eudora on my windows systems, I'll be switching over and then I'll be able to send mail consistently. Second, the problem I've been describing since last week, VoiceOver not reading all the icons in the messages table after changing to a different mailbox? VoiceOver bug. So thanks for the help, Mark. Now I'll go learn about imap. And then I can get back to playing the optimist again and eagerly await the next update? Hahahaha! Thanks again. Re: backing up iPhoto library?
It's strange, because when I do an export, the 21833 photo's are only 10 GB, but if I go into pictures, and attempt to copy the folder called iPhoto library, it's 115 gb. Can't figure out what the major difference is here. Another thing is, when I copy the iPhoto library istead of exporting, it takes almost 5 hours for it to copy only 500 MB, and says the entire thing will take 56 days to complete. Anyone know why? I forgot how to delte an ical event that just won't go away
Someone told me how to delete an ical event, but I didn't really understand the way they said to do it and it still keeps coming back three days later. Help! deleting reminders from the I phone 4S
Hi, I just got my 4S, and serie says she can't delete reminders, so how do I do it manually. I never could figure out reminders when I had 5.1 on the 3GS. Now I've got the 4S, and I still can't figure out how to delete reminders. the only difference is, that I can make them and make them work now. Also, does it do me any good to make location reminders, or are they more for those who can see. I don't think I can do it via serie can I? If so, will she tell me when they are checked off. I don't think she has told me yet about anything reminder related unless it's the reminder itself popping up. Any help would be appreciated. Just keep in mind I need step by baby step help with this as I have no clud what I'm doing. Jenny -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: deleting reminders from the I phone 4S
Jenny It's really easy. Go into the reminders app. Find the reminder you want to delete. Just double tap on the reminder where it says "double tap to edit details. ". Then there's a delete button pretty much in the middle of the screen. One more question about Ical. Something I'm seeing but not understanding
OK, I deleted the reminder I had for today. But I tried to click on previous, which just gives me a completed button or box or something. I click on that, and it gives me nothing. How do I delete all my reminders that I had in the ap? How do I go and find them all so I can delete them. thanks again. OK, another question? There is a list in Ical, Ah what does all that mean?
question. I have another question. If I'm in the list that is in the top center that says list, and I click on it, then at the top left it says shows list, which I click on that it has things like friends and family, completed, and reminders. I get what reminders are for, but what's completed, cause I know I had some completed things in my list of reminders that I can't find anymore, and friends and family, well, not sure what that's for, but I did find just the reminders on that list and can pull up my reminders coming up. Can someone give me a baby step explanation of this? Serie is no help:) Jenny -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Jenny, Recently I did two podcasts on using the Reminders app in iOS 5.1 with Voice over. I think you might find them helpful. The links are below. They are at applevis.com. Sound studio questions
Hi I just recently got this programme and understand it's accessible. Sometimes I can get the space bar to work as the play button, and sometimes not. The command p does work consistently. The manual says 3 is supposed to work as the record button but it doesn't. And sometimes the 1 and 2 buttons don't work as rewind and fast forward. Clearly there's something I'm not doing right as people report great success with it. Do you have to interact with any of the tables in order to make editing easier. I have turned cursor tracking off, but the editing functionality is by no means consistent. How do you purchase/download the Lame mp3 encoder so you can save as mp3 files? The manual doesn't tell you where to get it. I already have an app called mp3 converter which uses the lame encoder, so do I need to get anything else? I don't understand how to link Sound Studio with the lame encoder. Has anybody else successfully done this? I found Robert's podcast on basic editing with Sound Studio really helpful, but if anybody had the time to write a more detailed tutorial, or do a podcast on how to set it up to work best with VO I would be very grateful. Like do you zoom to selection, or to window, or doesn't it matter? What table do you have to be in for the editing to work best? Disableing the lock screen in Lion
Hello all, I was wondering where you go to disable the lock screen in Lion or change when it comes up? I looked in system prefs under energy saver but only found stuff for Putting the computer to sleep and dimming the display. Its quite annoying when it locks while doing a say all on a page with an article, for example. Its not the same thing. It locks and I have to reenter my password. When it sleeps it turns off and goes into a low powered state.
