Re: question about Apple wired keyboard with num pad.
You need to be careful though. This applies to the modern thin wired keyboard supplied by Apple. I hated this and replaced it with the old chunkier IMac keyboard. This does not have an FN key and there is a help key instead where the more modern FN key is placed. not to my knowledge. there are some concerns about internet download managers though from a security point on the windows side anyway. a port is left open and if found, unknown connections can enter and connect to your machine. have come across this a lot. lew On 2 Apr 2012, at 13:45, Venkatesh Potluri wrote: > Internet download manager also improves the download speed. Hi, Marc, As long as you're willing to jump right in, and not make many screen-reader comparisons between Mac and windows, and you enjoy learning new ways of doing things, then just dive right in. This is what I did, and I haven't regretted it. I got my Mac Mini about two years ago, and I was like a little kid with a new toy. Also, there is always this list if you get stuck. Re: Questions about switching from PC to Mac
I suspect doing this in today's heightened awareness of consumer tracking and privacy, probing people's machines to discover if they were using voiceover would be full of legal landmines. Many do not want to self-identify as having a disability or have that info pried out of their system config and a company that did that secretly or otherwise would probably have a PR mess once it was found out. Just have to tackle each task one at a time and ask here if you can't find a tool or technique. As far as networking goes, it's all TCP/IP on the internet so there really is no such thing as a 'mac' network or a 'windows' network. Granted Windows does some proprietary things for discovery but for anything internet related the protocols and such are all standardized. I'm not 100% clear on how your network is set up but if you are advertising a wifi network with some kind of WEP password your Mac should be able to join that just like anything else. If it's a wired network running DHCP you should be able to just plug in your Mac and go. Just one hint for list help, best to address one thing at a time in emails, unless they are something with a short answer. That way people with expertise in some area can jump in easily. A long email asking for help on 22 things will get less responses than one or two email threads at a time talking about how to accomplish one or two specific tasks. One you have those one or two things worked out, start an email thread on the next thing. With that being said, I have a variety of different questions to ask on here. I just wanted to know what the best way to go about it was. They cover a wide range of topics and I don't want to spam the list. On the other side however, putting them all in one e-mail would probably deter people from viewing certain questions they could answer because of other questions. So erm... I guess I'm asking what standard practice is around here for such things. I bet you guys get the same questions from new comers all the time so I don't want to be repetitive either. Thanks for any advice you can lend and I look forward to learning about the wonderful world of Mac! :) -Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: What is the difference between the reminder and the calendar on the new update on the IOS 5.1
One nice feature of Reminders that people aren't always familiar with is the geofence trigger. You can not only set a reminder to ping you on a certain date or time but you can also trigger it when you leave a location or arrive at a location. I was in a brainstorming session for a new accessible iPhone GPS app with a company and a couple people were asking for this until I piped up and pointed out that it already existed. Hi Jennifer, I did two podcasts on how to use the Reminders App from a VoiceOver perspective. You can find them at applevis.com. My purpose in doing the podcasts was to show a person just like you how to use the app and what the features were. I hope you will try them out. Hi Buddy, I had similar issues for a while and it had something to do with my old MobileMe account as the iPhone was originally synced with MobileMe contacts. If I remember correctly, I first fixed up everything on the Mac like you did, then I turned off iCloud syncing on the phone, made sure that all Contacts on the iPhone were gone then deleted and re-added my iCloud account to the iPhone. If your iCloud account used to be a MobileMe account, it doesn't appear to work properly until you delete then re-add it as an actual iCloud account. Everything works perfectly for me now, I can add something on my iPhone, it syncs to the iPad and all my Macs just like it should. This hopefully does something for you as well. Later... Re: Questions about switching from PC to Mac
Hi Marc. People have said that you have to forget everything about other screen readers when learning VoiceOver. I agree with that, and I don't. Interacting is a different concept but once you understand that interacting is a way of restricting where the screen reader's cursor goes, then it makes sense. However, a screen reader, whether on Windows or the Mac, basically has the same job. Before I got my Mac, I downloaded the brf file on the Apple web site that was the documentation for VoiceOver. I am famous for sitting down and reading the software documentation before starting on the program. I usually read all the way through at least once. That way, I can kind of remember something is " the book I want to find, even if I don't remember all the details. My first computer was an Apple II E, so I have been doing computer learning this way for a long time. I will say that I had a few bad moments before i learned about command-Z. That's to cancel what you did. My husband was not too happy the time I copied 50 files to his computer because I didn't know where I was. That's computers for you. Re: hard time reading man pages in terminal
I'm always forgetting about bwana. It really is nice but old habits die hard. CB On 3/30/12 1:44 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Eric, Chris, and Others, My suggestion for reading man pages for terminal commands is to download the freeware program bwana: http://bruji.com/bwana/ This program lets you use your browser to read man pages, and for the example that Chris cited of reading the man page for "bash", you'd simply navigate to the address bar of Safari with Command-L and type: man:bash When you press "return", the man page for the command you specified will be displayed in your web browser. You can also navigate to linked man page entries within that web page, and activate those links to display and read their man page entries. For the general case, just substitute whichever command you want to query after the colon that you type immediately after the word "man" in the address field. Bwana will let you read man pages in your browser for all versions of Mac OS X back to Tiger, and is a universal binary so it can also be run on the old PowerPC Macs as well as the current Intel Macs. If you want another variant shell command to display man pages in TextEdit instead of Preview, you can use: man bash | col -b | open -f -a TextEdit In the same thread from last month that discussed various ways of displaying man page information, I summarized how you could create definitions for both the above way of piping to "col" to reformat and then opening in TextEdit, and also for the command format that Chris referenced for using Preview. So if you want to set up your own Terminal command definitions for a "pman" or a "tman" command that would display in Preview or TextEdit, you can read my archived post: • Re: terminal: prompt: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg60660.html However, as I stated at the end of that post, it's really easiest to just use bwana instead. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Mar 30, 2012, at 6:26 AM, Chris Blouch wrote: This was posted previously on the list to load up man pages using Preview: man -t bash | open -a preview -f Maybe that would do a better job. Of course you would replace bash with whatever command you actually wanted man pages for. I found it was somewhat readable with VO but sometimes jumped around a bit. For example, it sometimes would jump to the footer to read that and then come back up to where I was reading elsewhere on the page. CB On 3/30/12 7:17 AM, Eric Oyen wrote: is there an easier to get info on a command in terminal. the man pages read, but in a broken fashion that makes finding the relevant information frustratingly difficult. the page won't read every line when the down arrow is depressed. this forces me to interact in word mode to find out what was not said. there has to be another, better way. I have also tried the online html pages that are recoded man pages, only to get a similar result (meaning that the reading of these pages is not smooth and feels entirely broken). -eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. I think if it came out that Apple was probing your system to figure out if you are using assistive technology (which probably means you have a disability) and did this without asking you first, the press and various advocate organizations would have a field day around violation of personal privacy. But, I'm not a lawyer and, in this case, it's all conjecture. I do know that I was contacted by some folks from a large web advertising company about my coding an MSAA detector on web browsers. Re: What is the difference between the reminder and the calendar on the new update on the IOS 5.1
Hi, The thing is, I don't know how to use any of those features. I'm still having a hard time making it set for a certain date. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to make it, well, I'm not even sure what all of that means that you said. Sorry if I'm a little ignorant but I'm just starting with IOS 5.1. Could you give me a baby step version on how to set it for a particular date for a reminder and also explain what you mean in the email above. Thanks in advance for you great patience. No Carbonite on the Mac
Hi all, recently I asked if Carbonite online backup could be used on the Mac with no reply. I wrote to Carbonite and asked the question if Carbonite worked with VoiceOver. I have received a reply from the company. They say that Carbonite will not work with the Mac Screen reader. I have asked them to let me know if and when it will. As Carbonite is a wonderful backup service that many of you could benefit from, you might like to write to supp...@carbonite.com and ask that they make it accessible with VoiceOver. A Question Regarding OCR
Hello Everyone, In addition to being the proud owner of a Focus 40 Blue, I also obtained Freedom Scientific's Pearl camera along with OpenBook 9.0. To put it simply, I am stunned with the OCR performance in both OpenBook and the accuracy of the camera along with the dazzling speed of the image acquisition experience. I think what blows my mind the most is the motion detection that allows one to turn pages and when the new page is in view of the camera, it automatically takes a photo and begins the OCR process. I swear it feels as though I have a sighted person reading for me. I could go on and on but ... I realize that the pearl has been out for quite some time and am wondering if anyone knows if it will work with anything on the Mac. I know one thing for sure, with the Pearl in my toolbox, I have put my scanner away for good. Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. RE: A Question Regarding OCR
Hi Mark, The Pearl will only work with OpenBOok 9.0 and will only work under windows. The two options that work with the Mac are the hoverCam with DocuScan Plus from Serotek and the EyePal. Personally I like the Pearl and OpenBOok as the accuracy is fantastic from everything I've scanned. Cheers. Re: A Question Regarding OCR
Congratulations on getting the Pearl, but I would suggest to you that you not do away with your scanner completely. You will find times when a thick book or so;mething that you cannot keep flat without applying pressure is going to do better on a scanner. The Pearl has a fixed focus, meaning that if the document or book is to o thick it will be somewhat out of focus, and thus you will not get a good picture for recognition. Your choices then are to find something about the same thickness to place the camera on in order to get the text back in focus or place the document on a flatbed scanner to scan the document. The Hovercam with the DocuScan Plus works very nicely on the Mac once you get familiar with how to adjust the camera to just the right height to get the best picture. DocuScan Plus may not do everything that OpenBook does, but it does a lot and has many great features for $299, and once you purchase it you can use it both for Windows and Apple. - Original Message - From: "Scott Erichsen" To: Sent: Monday, April 02, 2012 5:41 PM Subject: RE: A Question Regarding OCR Hi Mark, The Pearl will only work with OpenBOok 9.0 and will only work under windows. Re: Eloquent
Mark, Unfortunately, the NIV doesn't seem to be available. Eloquent is powered by the Sword Project. The Sword Project is a cross platform that is provided by cross wired.org for various non-profit Christian ministries to afford them the capability to share God's word & study it on a free basis. Hence, while the versions available are extensive, some of the publishers of the more modern versions are not willing to make them available for this application. Anyway, it's a great study tool & I just keep the Blue Letter Bible open in Safari for times when I need the NIV, NLT SE, NKJV, or The Message. I do enjoy the NLT & miss having it on my system, but I'm not willing to pay the out rageous prices for some of the other available software. Hope this helps, CJ On Apr 2, 2012, at 3:16 PM, M. You can use the included voices in garageband, and then switch them to see what they would sound like as a different instrument. You also can copy midi tracks into Garageband an play around with the different voices to change the effects. Hi all! Has anybody used Abby fine reader express for the mac? I just downloaded a trial version and it was much better than a few years ago. It worked with my old epson perfection scanner and I was able to scan and edit a document. I guess it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of kurzweil but for basic stuff it seemed fine. I am seriously considering a purchase of fine reader. Jim On Apr 2, 2012, at 8:21 PM, David Tanner wrote: > It is alive and well... Do you have version 12 patch 4? Re: A Question Regarding OCR
No, I haven't upgraded in many years, didn't think the accuracy of OCR really improved all that much necessarily, only used it for scanning mail once in awhile, but all in one printers sure scan slower than any scanner I've used before. I wish I knew where I put the big box that probably had version 6 in it, but if it's like Jaws or anything else I'll end up with a new disk when I purchase the upgrade. I hope those are still reasonable yet. - Original Message - From: "David Tanner" To: Sent: Monday, April 02, 2012 8:21 PM Subject: Re: A Question Regarding OCR It is alive and well... Re: A Question Regarding OCR
Well, Kurzweil upgrades are quite reasonable. Regardless of what version of the software you have the upgrade price is $125. So, if you are at version 6 you can go all the way to version 12 for $125 and if there is a new version within a year I believe that you get it for free, but don't take that for absolute fact . I am not a Kurzweil dealor and I may be wrong on the free upgrade to the next version if it comes out within less than a year. But I do know the upgrade price is $125. - Original Message - From: "Brent Harding" To: Sent: Monday, April 02, 2012 10:00 PM Subject: Re: A Question Regarding OCR No, I haven't upgraded in many years, didn't think the accuracy of OCR really improved all that much necessarily, only used it for scanning mail once in awhile, but all in one printers sure scan slower than any scanner I've used before. Re: A Question Regarding OCR
Hi Mark, I envy you acquiring the braille display especially. I really wish I were incorrect, but I know I am not missing anything or out of date in my understanding that the price of braille displays are just rediculously out of sight in price about 3 to 4 times over and then some. Still being a common man and feeling blessed and lucky to be able to achieve a few thousand in savings at any point in time at best I don't think a braille display for personal use is anywhere in my near future. Maybe I have already said too much, but what it takes to be able to obtain such technology just makes you throw your hands up in frustration.
