Re: *Important* New version of ChromeVox released to Web Store, includes bug fixes, improved table navigation, and changes to keyboard shortcuts

2011-11-28 Thread Bob Hill
Hi Kevin and list,

I have updated the Chromevox extension, but have a question.

I haven't been able to figure out how to change the volume.
I'm running an iMac, with an Apple keyboard which includes the number pad.

Thanks.

Re: speech is gone sometimes

2011-11-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Guys.
This happens to me occasionally in TextEdit, and I hadn't noticed it until the
last update. I think I should let Apple know about this, just in case they
don't know. I think it has to do with VoiceOver somehow because if I turn off
VO and wait a few seconds and then turn it back on the problem is fixed. I
don't know, since I can't see the screen, if this has anything to do with
saving files.

Gigi

Re: speech is gone sometimes

2011-11-28 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
the fault is to do with the speech server.

If you have as an example, settings enabled to announce background app
messages, etc, the speech server trips your reading text. this can sometimes
hang. the only way to handle it as you say is to quit and restart voiceover.

this is a problem which spans back from the early days of voiceover. speech
manager servers for screen readers like jaws, window eyes and voiceover in
particular are known to have hickups.

to be expected.

Your project

2011-11-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Louis.
I have been giving some thought as to whether you want me to contact the Apple
Corps of Dallas about your project for acquiring Macs for blind useers who
cannot afford now to get their own computers. The Apple Corps of Dallas is a
group of sighted Apple users who have been in existence for a long time. My
husband was once president of it. There are some long-time Mac users in this
group, along with iPad, iPhone, etc. users. They might be able to help you with
this, and at the very least, I could let people know so they can put out the
word. The Apple Corps publishes a newsletter called the Apple Gram. You can go
to their web site at www.acd.us.

Gigi

Re: Your project

2011-11-28 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
Hi GiGi/

thanks for your offer of help.

the problem is this. I'm based in the UK and you are in the USA. that means if
anyone in the USA wants to donate a mac, thay'd have to pay for shiping to the
UK, then I would have to acquire UK power supplies for certain models.

as kind as your offer is, I don't feel it would help. however if you think
anyone can help on the outspoken 9.2 front, that would be amazing.

thank you kindly for your email and it is greatly appreciated.

by default, the line out source or internal speakers depending on device are
the main settings. Not too sure on that as I don't use different audio sources.
I use a macbook pro with the internal speakers anywhere I go.

Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-28 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hello, all. I've recently learned how to buy music from Itunes, and now, it's
way too easy. When I complete a purchase, it
always advises me to back it up, but I'm wondering how I would go about doing
this. Also, 1 of the albums I purchased was
meant to be a present for my mom, but since she doesn't have any kind of I
device, I need to figure out how to burn the songs
to a CD. I have looked through the itunes menus, and unless I'm missing
something, which is entirely possible, I can't find
an option for burning to CD. If anyone could explain methods for backing up
itunes purchases, I would really appreciate it.
I'm still old fashioned and prefer physical media when possible, but on the
other hand, I'm starting to see where downloading
things can be convenient too. Thanks in advance for your help, and I hope that
everyone is having a great day!
Missy

Re: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-28 Thread John Panarese
Backing up your iTunes purchases is a matter of choice. In the beginning,
it's easier, but as you buy more tracks, it becomes more and more intensive.
Ideally, it is advised to use a blank CD for backing up your purchases. I
don't know if this has changed where you can use an external HD. If you are
using Time Machine or some other method of backing up your Mac, though, I don't
see a reason to have to go throughout the trouble of backing up your purchases.

In regards to burning the album for your mother, just create a playlist
with that album and there should be an option to burn the playlist to disk. I
have made several albums this way.

One reason this happens is when the mail program is open but you do not have a
mail window open. Go to the doc, select mail and you should be fine.

He used a third party software that allows you to set your own key combinations

RE: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-28 Thread Missy Hoppe
Ah! Thanks. So, the question now becomes how to create a new playlist. I will
play around with it a bit closer to Christmas
and see what I can figure out. In the mean time, I am copying music to an
external drive as I buy it. I haven't done the time
machine thing in ages; my external drive runs snow leopard now, and my macbook
itself runs Lion. So, I don't know if time
machine is possible in that situation.
Thanks for your help, though. It is extremely appreciated.

Re: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-28 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
hi john, that's right on the CD settings.

regarding backing up an itunes purchase or an entire library, I'd advise having
a pen drive large enough or a small usb 2.5" hard drive as your backup for
itunes. My own library is about 80GB in full audio quality and it's worth
backing up. OK I don't buy from itunes. I prefer the CD route. the tactile
pleasure of buying the CD, sticking it in your HIFI and chilling out is the way
to go.

RE: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-28 Thread Missy Hoppe
"OK I don't buy from itunes. I prefer the CD route. the tactile pleasure of
buying the CD, sticking it in your HIFI and
chilling out is the way to go. "

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I've just heard rumors that physical
media is going away fairly soon, so am trying
to prepare myself a little bit at a time. Naturally, as long as CDs exist, I'll
buy them, especially for artists I already
own CDs for, but for less important stuff, I don't mind just having it
digitally. Thanks for the suggestions on how to back
stuff up, though. They're all extremely appreciated.

hi john, that's right on the CD settings.

regarding backing up an itunes purchase or an entire library, I'd advise having
a pen drive large enough or a small usb 2.5"
hard drive as your backup for itunes. My own library is about 80GB in full
audio quality and it's worth backing up. OK I
don't buy from itunes. I prefer the CD route. the tactile pleasure of buying
the CD, sticking it in your HIFI and chilling
out is the way to go.

Re: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-28 Thread John Panarese
The easiest way to create a playlist from scratch in your situation is to
just select the entire album and making sure all of the tracks are selected.
Then, connamd-shift-n will create a new playlist from the selection.

As for time machine, you can use any external HD as long as you have the
room to do so. It will create its own backup folder on the drive. It should
not interferer with anything else on the drive.

Hi!
Well I like a good 12 inch myself!
I've recently been tracking down 12 inch collections and have got back a lot of
my old 12 inch collection that I lost years ago!
But I do like all sorts!
Even this modern stuff! :]

anybody else noticed weird behavior with google accessibility search lately?

2011-11-28 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi,

Subject line almost says it all. Last night, I went to use Google's accesible
search and noticed that I could no longer navigate by headings through the
results. Also, every single result I got was related to Google and nothing
else was showing up at all. The regular Google site now seems to work even
better. Any thoughts?

go to voiceover utility VO F8

then voiceover round until you hear enable welcome dialogue. UNCHECK it. now
close voiceover utility, turn off voiceover and restart it.

hope this helps

where can I tips on general usage of safari bookmarks with vo

2011-11-28 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,

I have read through the vo getting started guide about safari. Is there a
resource to read up on bookmarks in safari? I am a bit confused about they are
organized. Bookmarks menu, bookmarks bar, what is the difference. Folders,
collections... a bit much for my poor brain.

Also I have selected a bookmark but cannot find a way to go to it. I press
command o and get in to the open dialog box. Press enter and get to the edit
bookmark name.
So, as you can see, I got some issues with bookmarks.

Thanks for any help.

difference between amadeus light and pro

2011-11-28 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,

I am looking into getting Amadeus to do some audio file remastering. I was
using
in windows and am looking for something similar. If I get the light version
can I upgrade to pro or do I have to buy it if I decide I need more features?

Can I rip the audio track from a video file with it?

Thanks,

adium event for typing a message?

2011-11-28 Thread erik burggraaf
OK guys, I've got a client who misses his clicky "so and so is typing a
message" sound that he used to have on jaws. Whatever I may think of that
personally, it's obsessive compulsive and irritating, I need to know if there's
a pluging or something for adium that will play a sound when the person on the
other end of the conversation is typing a message. I checked the events tab of
adium preferences but it's not there in the standard list.

If any one has this set up, I'd appreciate you letting me know.

New music scares you? I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find some
pretty scary music from the 70s and 80s. Black Sabbath's "electric Funeral"

New music scares you? I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find some
pretty scary music from the 70s and 80s. Black
Sabbath's "electric Funeral" definitely does not remind me of sugar plum
ferries. :)

Any ideas? Could it be a software or hardware issue?

Re: siri

2011-11-28 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
SIRI relies on speech recognition to translate speech to data. kind of like the
days of IBM (spits in bucket... DING) Viavoice.

Bearing in mind that SIRI is new technology, it's got a while to go before
complete stability. There are many instances where people have had issues and
strange functionality with SIRI but on the whole it seems to be doing OK. SIRI
may need to adjust to you.

I'm not a SIRI user (iphone 3-GS DOH!)

all I can say is give things time.

the next ios fix is due soon.

iphone4s and triple home

2011-11-28 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
I still have a iphone4 but I know people with a 4s.
One of the vo features I have red was that any new iphone4s should have the
triple home set to vo on/off by default.
But, on the iphone4s of my friend, the triple home did nothing.

Is any iphone4s prepared with a triple home to start/stop vo?

Thx for your answers,

Re: iphone4s and triple home

2011-11-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
I have been wondering if some of these stores are changing default because I
know two sighted people whose 4S iPhones do not have the tripple home setting
on The phone, and they did nothing to change it. I know for sure the second one
I know didn't because she didn't even know about it. Therefore, we might want
to find out if we buy one from somewhere.

Re: iphone4s and triple home

2011-11-28 Thread William Windels
Hello Charlie,
I have no problem , voiceover is turning on/off with a triple home on my phone
but I have configured that in the beginning when I had my iphone4 with ios4.
My question is if the triple home is by default assigned to toggle voiceover
on/off on a iphone4s with ios5?
This could be very useful if a blind person need a iPhone of someone else and
the iPhone is not set to use voiceover.

On this way, he/she can prepare the phone to use it with voiceover without need
of a computer or sighted assistance.

Thx for all further answers,

Re: siri

2011-11-28 Thread Kevin Shaw
Hi Rachel,

SIRI is still in beta mode and there are service outages from time to time. My
phone in Canada goes through the same thing every so often. the best thing to
do is wait a bit for the service to get less congested and try again. At least,
this is the approach I take.

Re: algoriddim DJ 4 updated and accessible

2011-11-28 Thread Kevin Shaw
Hi Yuma and others using DJ,

I just got the software. Pretty cool. I was a mobile DJ for 7 years using CDs
and Denon CD players with pitch controls. The interface of the program looks
okay so far and I've been having fun playing with transitions and so on.

I've got a couple of questions you may be able to help with:

1. Can you recommend a good and accessible DJ controller? I'm going to
assume that once I get the controller, there is nothing else I need to do when
installing it with OS X?
2. Is there an easy way to set a cue point using the keyboard? I've tried
using the keyboard commands, but it doesn't seem to recognize the downbeat when
I do this, even though I'm trying to be as precise as possible.
3. Has anyone been able to get the sampler to load up different samples?

Thanks,
Kevin

Simply turn it on. what it does is adjusts the perceived loudness of your song
relative to other songs. This way, you're not constantly turning your volume up
and down because the following track is too loud/quiet.

It's great for worry-free playlists and shuffling a wide variety of styles and
genres.

I tend to leave the volume limit off on the iPhone. A good pair of headphones

Hi guys.
I have been wondering if some of these stores are changing default because
I know two sighted people whose 4S iPhones do not have the tripple home
setting on The phone, and they did nothing to change it. I know for sure the
second one I know didn't because she didn't even know about it. Therefore,
we might want to find out if we buy one from somewhere.

Re: algoriddim DJ 4 updated and accessible

2011-11-28 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi Kevin,

To answer your questions:
1-You can grab any usb midi controller and map any function of the application
with midi learn baked into it. If you're looking for turntables, most of them
are now compatible with dj except for timecode vinyl controllers such as the
numark v7s or some other active platter controllers. Personally i have the
numark ns6 and added two pad controllers, the akai series which are pretty good
and affordable too.

2- The cue points using the keyboard were my first testing ground and they
worked fine for me, alas you need sharp reflexes to get the right timing as
though waveforms are present in dj 4, we can't really use them,. Algoriddim is
pretty receptive in adding accessibility so it's worth a shot giving them a
pointer on either their twitter @algoriddim or through their forum where anders
the moderator sifts through all feature requests.

3- I havent extensively looked into the sampler part, though i have 3 samples
record and play pads mapped on my controllers, however the newer sample editor
doesn't seem accessible though i could swear it was there when 4.0 which made
voice over extremely sluggish was there.

This yet another feature to ask the guys there, but i wouldn't bet on it as
most drum kit, pad enabled software never seems to have accessibility, or if it
does, it's not very intuitive as all the dynamic areas are just called buttons.

Best

Yuma
