Re: iOS 4.3.2: New Software Keyboard Rotor Option
Hi and happy Easter holiday! Can one utilize rotor options from the ipad keybord dock? I use mostly my ipad from the keybord dock as I like it much that way, thanks. Original message: Hello all, Just one quick note: this new rotor option was added in IOS 4.3.0. This was also when the 4 finger flick up or down to go to the top or bottom of the screen was replaced with the 4 finger tap at the top half or bottom half of the screen, eliminating all 4 finger swipe gestures. Re: iOS 4.3.2: New Software Keyboard Rotor Option
on my iPad2 the containers option of the roter does exactly what people are saying, enables a quick way of moving from one side of a screen, or screen element to another. works very well, although I find it sometimes slower then the older four finger swipe left / right on the iPad1 I used to have running versions of the iOS older than v4.3.0 when this option was removed and replaced. the containers option is only shown on the iPad as the iPhone does not have this display mode. Re: iOS 4.3.2: New Software Keyboard Rotor Option
yes, you can use the roter using the keyboard doc or blue tooth keyboards. enable quick nav by pressing the left and right arrow keys at the same time, you'll hear Voice Over say quick nav on. no =w by pressing left or right on their own you'll navigate as usual, but by pressing up or down on its own you'll jump through content based on the current roter setting. you change the roter setting by either pressing the left and up arrow key at the same time, or the up and right arrow at the same time. or you can do the gesture on the screen, which is two fingers touching at the same time and rotating them 90 degrees left or right. the options in the roter change depending on the type of content shown on the screen. Re: iOS 4.3.2: New Software Keyboard Rotor Option
When I use "container" option on my iPad. it doesn't seem to do what others have said here, i.e. go from section of the screen to another section. It just moves me through all the elements within all sections as I flick right or left with one finger. Am I doing something wrong? Re: extremely frustrated re: reading pfd files
Esther, this is such a helpful description, thank you. I also wonder wehther when reading in iBooks, one can read line by line? I don't ever see that option in the rotor on the iPad. Also, when reading pdf versions of "take control books" if I pause reading with double finger tap, and then switch to reading by word and start flicking, I always get taken to the beginning of the page I am on which is a nuisance if what I want to examine closely happens to be further down the page. Then once I've got the info I want, and switching back to continuous reading, I again get taken to the beginning of the page which is again irritating. Is there a better way of reading than the one I've just described? yes, you are doing that wrong, firstly ensure that the roter setting is set to container, now single finger swipe up or down will move through the various containers, or whatever you've set the roter to... so the rule here is, swiping up and down moves through the objects as defined at that time by the roter, swiping left / right moves item by item and ignores the roter. RE: extremely frustrated re: reading pfd files
Hi Carolyn and Esther. I have the Pages program. It won't open PDFs. After trying to get one open in Pages recently, I wrote to the list and asked about it. Ishe said Pages can only export to PDF. Thank you Esther for that reminder. I do interact with the text in preview. Reading by line works until I want to start examining a line one character at a time. Hi, Sorry i don't use Facebook on the Ipad so can't be of much help here. Maybe someone else who has used the Facebook app on the IPad could tell how it works. But on the IPhone it works great. I don't know anything about that other operating system, but on the Mac, if you empty the trash before disconnecting the device, those hidden files should disappear and the space will be freed up. Text to audio file options [was Re: slow speech with sending to itunes as a spoken track]
Hi Kevin, On Apr 21, 2011, at 21:23, Kevin Gibbs wrote: > What is the value of this service if you have Alex to read text. Is > this the way we got the Leopard podcast on VO read in the voice of > Alex? > The main reason that people want to use the service menu option for "Add to iTunes as a Spoken Track", or other means of transforming text to a spoken recording is to be able to listen to material when they don't have Alex around to read text -- for example, if they want to create mp3 files of text that they can transfer to an iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad for listening when they are out and about, away from their computer. You can imagine quite a lot of other uses: reviewing documents or notes for work or school while you are commuting, creating a set of prompt notes with for when you have to give a presentation, creating descriptive announcement clips for joining onto the beginning of your podcast or music recordings, etc. Another easy way to turn text into a recorded file is to use GhostReader from Assistiveware. This software can be bought as an add-on bundled discount with any Infovox iVox voice purchase for $10. It's meant for the general market as a way to read documents, mail, and web pages with these voices (without VoiceOver), but has some nice additional features, such as a menu option to turn your selected text into an audio file that gets added to iTunes at the speaking rate you're using for the app. There's an undocumented feature that lets you switch voices in mid-text by embedding control sequences. The way the voice/language switching works is by using the sequence: \vce=speaker=newspeaker\ For example: \vce=speaker=heather\I prefer to use English. \vce=speaker=alice\Chacun à son goût.\vce=speaker=heather\ The first phrase is spoken in the U.S. English Heather voice, and the reply is given in French by the French Alice voice. The command to switch voices again follows Alice's reply, so the next text will be spoken in English. If you want to read through a dialog with voices speaking multiple languages, this is great. It only works in GhostReader, and only with Infovox voices of the same quality (e.g., you can't mix the lower quality compressed versions of voices that come with GhostReader, and work only in that app to read mail, documents, and the web, with the higher quality versions of the same voice that you can use system-wide, and which can be used with VoiceOver. Two more options, which I'll paste in from an old post to the mac-access list (from over two years ago, so Automator is easier to use now than in that description). From: Esther Subject:Re: Text to speech and mp3 Date: February 10, 2009 Here are two alternatives: • Apple has a demo Automator workflow that converts text from your clipboard to an audio clip in iTunes. You could download this and modify it to work with a selected TextEdit file instead of the clipboard, and you could change the setting from AAC encoding to mp3. The Apple URL is: http://automator.us/leopard/examples/ex07/index.html and you can get the workflow from the page's download link. It's actually easier to check the components out under Automator. It's made up of 4 steps: 1. Get Contents from Clipboard 2. Text to Audio File 3. Import Audio Files 4. Add Songs to Playlist You can hear these listed if you VO-right to the Workflow area of Automator, interact, and VO-down arrow through the list once you've downloaded it. To run this as is, download the workflow and open it. Select some text and copy to clipboard with Command-C. Then do a Command-R to run the workflow. As it stands, the workflow creates an AAC file called "Spoken Text" that it move into your iTunes library. You can change the format to MP3 by interacting with the "Import Audio Files" action of the Workflow and VO-right to the popup button that specifies using the "AAC encoder" and setting this to "MP3 encoder". There's a trick to getting text to speech to record this at a faster rate -- put the following characters at the beginning of the file: [[rate 300]] That's two left brackets (where left bracket is the key to the right of the "p" key), the word "rate", a space, and a number which is the words per minute, then two right brackets. In the example used above, the rate is 300 words per minute. What you really want to do is replace the "Get Contents from Clipboard" action with "Get Contents of TextEdit Document", but this is a little more complicated, since actions get added to the end of the workflow. You'd have to first select the new action by 1. Navigating (VO-right) to the Actions Library, and selecting "Text" (press "t") 2. Navigate (VO-right) to the Actions table and select "Get Contents of TextEdit Document" (press "g") 3. Add this to the work flow (Interact with VO-Shift-Down arrow, Double-Click with VO-Shift-Space, stop interacting with VO-Shift-Up arrow). At this

Re: extremely frustrated re: reading pfd files
Hi Esther. Once again you've come to the rescue. I can indeed view the very same book in iBooks as you said. Also, concerning preview, I was going about trying to read a character at a time the wrong way. I was trying to set the rotor to character and then using the down arrow key with quicknav turned on. I still have quicknav on, but now I just use VO-Shift-left or right arrow. I use preview for PDFs that I can't get on iBooks. Also, I have to remember to use the bookmark feature any time I leave the preview window because it will take me back to the very top of the PDF if I don't. Again, thank you, Esther. I can see you took quite a bit of time to verify that the book you were talking about was the same book I was reading and how to search for it, etc., not to mention writing the email and even including a link. Hi Tony, I don't know about your specific model of Macbook, but my instinct would be that it is a bit too early for the multitouch trackpads to have been added. Tony, If your MB Pro is 2008 or before, you're out of luck. I'm in the same boat. My MB Pro is late 2008 or second generation. So, I used an Apple gift card I had & spent $69 for the blue tooth Magic Track Pad. I think it's great! But, I admit I've become so used to using the keyboard that I only use the pad for some commands. I'd probably use it more if it were right on the laptop. It is fun to use though, I'll admit. Re: Dashboard
Ezzy: I can help out with Dashboard off list, if you want, via Skype, as we have before. Very briefly: Pressing F4, or Function F-12, depending on how your keyboard preferences are configured, will bring up Dashboard. Dashboard is a series of widgets, mini-apps, which are like tiny little tools you might keep on the dashboard of your car--tweezers, mini-flashlight, cigarette lighter, gold-framed photo of me, whatever. Choosing which widget you want is done by hitting VO F2 (OR VO Function F2, depending on the above keyboard settings) twice quickly. Then, use the up and down arrows until you come to Weather, and press Enter. To change the forecast shown, VO right arrow until you come to an image labeled with the name of the city whose forecast is currently being shown. This is important: You MUST VO SHIFT Space bar on this image, to enact a mouse click, otherwise nothing will happen. If you VO Shift Space on this "(city name) info," image, it should bring up an edit box in which you can type the zip code for your city. Once you type that in, VO navigate to the "DONE," button and, once again, you must mouse-click, or VO SHIFt Space-bar, on it. This should set it up to always bring up your forecast when you hit F4 or whatever your keyboard is set for. Hope that helps--blow up my Skype if not. Slightly O-T: Blind musicians list
Hiya All, I'm sorry that some of the lists I've posted this too, mean the post is slightly Off topic, but I'd like this to get to as many blind / visually impaired people as possible. Does anyone know if there is a central mailing list for blind / visually impaired musicians? I know there are specialist ones, such as the Pro Tools access list, and the Logic access list (which I unfortunately don't have the address for). If anyone knows of one, please let me know. If not, then I'll create one. This all came about, after a very interesting conversation with some good friends of mine, who pointed out that it would be great, to have a central repository for information, pertaining to making music as a blind person, and also, the various software, hardware, and other technologies out there. I thought it was a great idea, but I don't want to replicate someone else's hard work. Cheers, and sorry if I've waisted anyone's time. Switching apps and switching windows [was Re: safari tabs vs windows]
Hi Sarai, A good way to remember the window switching shortcut (Command-Accent) is to think about it together with the application switching shortcut (Command-Tab) -- which is like the similar shortcut for Windows (Control-Tab). On the Mac, Command-Tab will let you rotate between all the currently active applications. Pressing Command-Accent (where the Accent key is just above the tab key on English language input keyboards) switches you between open windows within the current application. In both cases adding the Shift key to your shortcut combination (e.g. Command-Shift-Tab, or Command-Shift-Accent) moves you through the active applications or open windows in the reverse order. Remember that on the Mac you don't quit an application when you close its window (Command-W), but only when you actually quit the app (Command-Q). HTH. Technical AirPort question
All, I hope this will make sense, but this is a little complicated perhaps. Currently I have an AirPort Time Capsule as the main router and an AirPort Express on another floor to extend the range of the network. The Time Capsule has both a 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radio. I learned the AIrPort Express does as well. I have effectively two networks it seems in that devices can connect to the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz network, which has the same name accept the 5Ghz network actually states network name followed by 5Ghz. The goal of course was to segregate the 8211G devices from the 8211N devices by allowing devices supporting 8211N to only access the 5Ghz network. THis seems to work fine, but I noticed that my iPad was loosing it's connection until I allowed it to connect to the AirPort Express by entering the password (which is the same for the entire network). My thought was that perhaps for some reason although the Express is extending the network, the iPad was not making the switch to the extender. So, that got me to wondering if the iPad was connecting to the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz portion/radio of the network. I'm still not entirely sure since it seems the AirPort Express when setup does not allow access to a lot of the configuration options. Well ok, of course you can change anything, but when configured to extend the range of the network, it would make sense that you would not need access to all options (if that made sense). So, once I connected it seem to behave as expected, but at that time I did not realize the AirPort Express had both 2.4 and 5Ghz radios. So, after all that prattle, does anyone know a bit on how these routers work as far as handing off traffic to an extender and how a device knows to make the switch? I suspect I know more than I realize, but just haven't found the best resource to learn. Within limits, yes. There are certain things you don't really do on iPhones, such as interact with controls or tables. Re: trackpad commander
Trackpad commander is not a feature of ios; hence it is not relevant to I-devices. Temporary resolution of Safari hanging
Hi, I've seen some complaints about Safari hanging a lot. I've had it on some sites where Safari will hang perpetually and will not come out of it. I was on snopes.com and i was doing this a lot. I noticed that if I turn off Voiceover and turn it on again, then Safari is no longer hanging when I come back to it. This might help for some people's situations. Thank you, that does help, and actually makes sense when you explaine it that way. Re: Technical AirPort question
This is probably a really stupid question, Scott. But are you sure the IPad has a 5GhZ radio in it? I know Macs do. But do I-devices as well?
