yes, you are doing that wrong, firstly ensure that the roter setting is set to container, now single finger swipe up or down will move through the various containers, or whatever you've set the roter to...
so the rule here is, swiping up and down moves through the objects as defined at that time by the roter, swiping left / right moves item by item and ignores the roter.
