Re: braille and voice over?
There is some more info on Braille displays and a list of supported Braille displays on apple website Accessibility and Voiceover. I have been using Focus 40 I purchased 4 years ago, and it's doing fine. It's a usb model. Bluetooth models are also supported but have a look at the listt. Here is the link Learn more about supported braille displays Archie Robertson and Ann Robertson ffom Cecimac have enhanced the use of Braille displays for those of us who need to work with foreign languages by adding access to numerous languages via their native Braille systtem. If you need this type of support ask for Ann Robertson on the list. Ann and Archie are very busy with work and support for French mac users but they are extremely kind and have done wonders for Braille users who require this medium in other than English language. Hope this helps. Simon On 17 Apr 2011, at 02:07, Scott Howell wrote: > Hi Priscilla, > > Welcome to the Mac. WEll I use a Refreshabraille, which is only 18 cells, but > it works perfectly for me. Re: braille and voice over?
Hi, I use an Alva Satelite 544 which is a quite old display but it works, or should i say worked well until OsX 10.6 when it decided it no longer wanted to play, this was due to incompatibility with the international braille system mentioned below. Now please let me clarify that i think it has nothing to do with the international braille table app that Anne and Archy are working on as such, i just don't remember what to do to get my Alva rolling with these tables. There was some file or other that had to be moved or removed, but i'm damned if i could figure out what and how to make the thing be recognized as a display. If anyone knows, please shed some light as i really want my braille to work, but when it works, the Braille works well for what i do. It would be good if i could be able to let the display run freely, that is, that it isn't tied to the vo cursor. That would be great for reading in places where the vo cursor isn't. Also, i'd love to have the braille display not repeat what the speech just said, it's unnecessary info, at least for me, though others may need it, which is why there should be a toggling possibility for that. Sorry for this rather longish post. /Krister 17 apr 2011 kl. 09.00 skrev Simon Cavendish: > There is some more info on Braille displays and a list of supported Braille > displays on apple website Accessibility and Voiceover. > > I have been using Focus 40 I purchased 4 years ago, and it's doing fine. Re: Jaksta
Chris, here are a few of my thoughts on this. After you authorized the program, did you try exiting it and then reopening it? Also, I'm not sure what you mean when you say you clicked on a file. Were you trying to record something from the internet or were you trying to convert a file that was already on your hard drive? Of course, the way this program works is that when you click the start button, its little nose sniffs around for media and tries to capture it, and then when you are done, you click the stop button and its little nose stops sniffing around for media. One thing that confused me was that when I tried to capture a Youtube video, a few seconds into the capture, it made a sound like it was stopping, so I thought maybe I had the same problem as you, but actually, it did capture the whole thing after all. I just purchased a license for this program yesterday. I did use a program called Replay AV on the Windows side made by the same company, but I admit I've just started working with the Mac equivalent, so I have a few things to figure out myself, but I was able to successfully record a Youtube video just now. Re: Jaksta
Hi Lynn, Yes, I did close the program and then reopened it again and I was thanked for activating it. First, I click on Start, then go to the internet and find the file I want and download it. It only seems to download a little bit of the file over and over again. I have to abort the operation. Other then that, whatwas there, sounded perfectly fine. Thanks for your help. Re: braille and voice over?
Hi, Braille displays are a very personal thing, much like voices and voice settings. What feels comfortable in my hand may not be comfortable in your hand. The shape of the cells and positioning of the keys is extremely important. So, I suggest you feel as many displays as you can to determine which is most comfortable for you. I must say, apple braille support is very good. It's highly configurable. Bluetooth and usb are both supported. computer braille input is supported. There are some improvements I would like to see for the release of Lion, including grade two input and the ability to define mac OS key assignments as well as voiceover key assignments. The edition of return and backspace keys for braille input wouldn't come a miss either. I have personal experience with the braille connect and the focus 40 blue, and I've also heard good things about the alva BC640. I've taught all of these displays, and I prefer the braille connect. It's more expensive, but it's the smallest and lightest in it's class. It's the best built out of the three displays I've tried far and away. It feels comfortable in my hand. The control surface is very streamlined and nice. Plus you can now get a beautiful executive products leather case for it which rocks if I do say so myself. If you have a braille note or a braille sense they will work with the mack very nicely. This would be a much more expensive solution than a braille display but would give you more functionality in terms of note taking in class. I'd love to get a braillelite up and running but it just isn't going to happen. Even if you were to get a nice usb to serial cable and get it all hooked up, there isn't a voiceover driver for the braillelite, so it will just be ignored. On 4/17/2011 4:11 PM, Ed Worrell wrote: My question is pretty simple. Just drag one application on top of another by double tapping then holding the second tap. Move the application you are interested in to another and then a folder will be created. You can then give the folder a new name. Does that make sense? Doug -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Bookshare DAISY files and default behavior of Safari
Hi list: I notice that I have to uncgheck the box to open safe files after download when downloading BookShare DAISY books. If I don't do this, the download reports that it could not decompress the file. If I uncheck that box, the file downloads correctly. After download, the archive utility doesn't seem to want to uncompress the file since it is password protected. I can go into terminal and unzip it manually with no problem, but, I must be missing some step for unzipping the encrypted file. Does Safari and/or the file compression utility have trouble with encrypted zip files, or, am I not doing something right? Thanks! Addictiv games for iPhone...
Hi folks. Games have always been a topic here in this group, so now I'll come back to it :) Have anyone out there tried any addictive time-consuming games that's also accessible for blind players? Is there for example a "blind friendly" Angry Birds-like game out there that someone have tried? Hope to get good suggestions. No Angry Birds -- yet. I enjoy Choice of the Dragon, Aurifi, Tap the Mole, but must say that the exceedingly time-consuming, multi-level, multi-player games are not possible for me. Too much to do. I understand the pull, though. Hi, I download Bookshare books in BRF. I use an app called the Unarchiver. It works great. You just have to type in your password when unzipping, and it'll do it for you. I've never downloaded a book in Daisy, but I don't see why this pp wouldn't work for those, as well. Re: braille and voice over?
Hi Pricilla: Welcome! I didn't notice your scan question before I replied about braille displays. Scaning is an area that in my very humble opinion is not well addressed on the Mac platform. There are some applications that can perform scanning. But, they are not as simple as for example an openbook or krzweil interface. Some people on list have successfully been using a combination of apps very successfully. That is, an app called Vuescan, which can scan well, but doesn't address page orientation, combined with Abbyy Fine Reader, which does excellent OCR, but is very scanner choosy. Top solution for scanning, albeit an expensive one is the eye-pal. It is a good system. But, the Mac interface is currently being re-built. The two applications I mentioned run about $150 US, while the eye-pal is I think, around $1200. Hope this helps a little. If you go to Sarotalk.com, there is a podcast where there is a demonstration of the Mac version of Docuscan with the camera done by Rickie Enger. I just bought the software which is for Serotek customers $199 until the end of April. The regular price is $299. The camera is $499.00. You can't go wrong with that. The documentation for both Mac and PC is available from Serotek and you go to the help section. Hope this helps. Chris On Apr 17, 2011, at 2:40 PM, carolyn Haas wrote: > Hi Pricilla: > Welcome! introduction
Hi all. I'm Tony Hernandez, and I just joined today. I see from the archives that this group has been around for quite some time. I just ordered a not so new MacBook and haven't even received it yet, but I hope to hit the ground running with Voice Over. I can already see this group is full of kind people. I hope to be able to help others soon as well. Now, of course, I do have a question. Proofreading is part of my job, and although I do have a, dare I say it, Windows PC to do it with, I might switch everything to the Mac at some point in the future. I am able to use the windows screen reader to tell when something is either in all caps or in proper case. Can this be done with Voice Over? I'll probably find out the answer to this in due course as I play with the Voice Over Utility, etc., but I've been itching to know this for a long time. I might need to know about it if Objective C has any case-sensitive keywords or variable syntax, etc. Of course if it doesn't give that feedback, it's far from a deal breaker. I have no need to use my Mac for my regular job. I'm very excited to get a Mac. I've been salivating over them since Mike Arrigo demonstrated voice Over. I already have an iPod Touch. the most challenging thing so far for me regarding Apple is resisting the temptation to be the ever-criticized fan boy. Lol. Hard not to be loyal to a mainstream company that would make its own screen reader, do a wonderful job on it, and include it with its $30 operating system at no extra charge. Tony Hernandez http://dutyofman.net/ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Unarchiver works well with daisy books too. The built-in archive utility does not work for bookshare books. Someone else could probably explain why but I don't know. Use VO-keys (control-option)-spacebar to select a piece and the same key combination to drop the piece on the intended square. scrolling through terminal window
Hi list, Just wondering here, i'm rather new at terminal but use it more frequently as days go by, and i had a question for efficiently reading terminal windows and text that scrolls by. So far, when i have large ammounts of text as a result to a terminal command, i usually copy all and paste into text dit to skim through the data. Is there a way within terminal to go back up the ammount of text? the arrow keys only scroll through the previously inputted commands, and there is no way to trace back unto what the results. any help greatly appreciated Yuma -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: scrolling through terminal window
Hi Yuma, I don't have an answer as such for your question. However I might suggest that if you are not using fullscreen terminal apps you may find that shell mode in emacs using emacspeak is much more accessible. you can use incremental search to move back through the output to find what you are looking for. I find it is much more comfortable than trying to use the terminal. That of course may be because I am not that familiar with the terminal. Just another option. Re: introduction
Hi T, Sure, you will love it the day the Mac will hit your doorstep. VO has a way to show that the word is in all caps. You have many ways to know when a letter is in caps, either by the raising of the pitch or a tone. Even deleting words, it will tell you in a low pitch that is unmistakable. Well, about Objective C. Just like all the derivatives of C, it is case sensitive. I hope you won't have any problems here if you'd been used to C, Java, C++ or even the C# on Windows. XCode is the equivalent of Visual Studio on Mac, except that if you want to develop apps, you can also develop those for the iOS devices. It is free to download from the Apple site once you are registered as a developer. However, you only have to pay $100 to Apple so that you can get the developer ID and be able to put your apps in the App Store. Wish you all the best in your journey. Know what? You will find that you will convert full time to Mac before you're aware of it. You will use it for the job and yeah, about you not being a fan, you will be a zealous fanatic of Apple products before the end of four weeks: plus r minus! Hi Priscilla, The Mac software isn't out just yet. They said on the Podcast that it will be coming out very soon. I sure hope so. From what I have seen in the documentation, it is very easy to use. Will let you know when I hear more. Re: scrolling through terminal window
Hi, I believe that vo and the arrow keys will do at least part of what you want. I use them to review terminal output all the time. You need to be interacting with the shell text area for this to work, of course. Beyond that, it depends on how large of an output you're dealing with. I love programs like less for breaking that into manageable chunks. Hope this helps, Zack. Re: Addictiv games for iPhone...
On the mac. it's VO+Space for select then vo+ space to place a piece if you're not using trackpad commander. If you are using the trackpad commander it's double tap on the trackpad to select a piece, then double tap to place. I hadn't played in a while so I even went and verified this. Re: Addictiv games for iPhone...
Hi guys. IMO chess is dead boring when playid alone against a computer/phone. I've actually never succeeded a chess game on my mac, either in Chess Wise, so I won't go further with that. I'd hope there was someone out here that know of any great simple games with short levels that doesn't take too much time to play and learn to play, but still time-consuming due to its addictiveness. -David On Mon, Apr 18, 2011 at 06:48, Pete Nalda wrote: > On the mac. it's VO+Space for select then vo+ space to place a piece if > you're not using trackpad commander.
