Re: Help me get started running Windows on a Mac
Hello! Just a quick note: You will need to change at least one key since you can't have the capslog key as the Jaws key. You can use a program called: Sharpkeys. It has been reviewed on Mainmenu and it will help you a lot, when you want to use the Jaws key. I have personally decided to use the right option key as my Jaws key when I'm using VMware. . Re: speed of bootcamp vs vmware vs native windows?
Hey, In my experience, the latest vmware fusion is pretty fast! I run a few apps on it, and they all work great. I would say to have more than 2GB or ram, so that you can give enough to windows and enough to OSX and it'll fly. As far as bootcamp and running windows natively, they're both the same. All bootcamp does is lets you setup windows on another partition, and then provides the drivers for the mac's hardware for windows. Mac's tend to make extremely fast windows machines. My macbook with win7... it's almost (almost) as fast as OSX, in both vmware and bootcamp. The thing you want to decide, is if you want windows and OSX apps to run at the same time, or i fyou want to restart. Restart? use bootcamp. side-by-side? vmware. you can always get the trial of vmware fusion once you have your mac and see what works best for you. ash On 03/04/2011 01:05, Alex Hall wrote: Hi all, Just a quick question. there is little to know defragmenting needed, and the mac doesn't use a registry. Repair permissions and check the disk using disc utility. Then under applications in utilities, go into terminal. Yes it does. I picked up a copy of Drive Genius more for its capabilities to repair damaged drives etc. An expensive program, but one that is worth having in the toolkit for sure. I'm also working with Prosoft Engineering on some tweaks to their Data Rescue package, which is again, perhaps a little expensive for some, but another tool well worth having when you consider the cost of data recovery services. :) On Apr 3, 2011, at 12:52 PM, Ashley Cox wrote: > Yes, true. there is a nice program called iDefrag if you really want to > defrag. King's Corner?
Hi All, I recently stumbled onto an app called Kings Corner, which claimed to be voiceover accessible. It's a card game for iOS, but I've been having a lot of trouble actually moving the cards. I'd really appreciate any tips from someone who has actually managed to play and done reasonably well. It seems dragging is the way to do things, but the process doesn't seem consistent. Any help would be appreciated. Best and thanks, Zack. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: King's Corner?
Hi Zack, I've played this game some, and found it to be quite accessible. The way you move cards around is by dragging them. the trick is that the game only reads the stack if you can actually drop the card there, which is a bit confusing at first. mod note
Hi everyone: Hope all are having a great weekend. I would like to post a couple of reminders on behalf of the moderators of the list. There have been quite a few new members, and we could all use a refresher of things to keep in mind when writing: 1. This list is open to people with interest in things Mac/apple. However, the process for subscription has generally been to submit a request via Googlegroups. Please refer potential subscribers there to keep the list from being taken up with matters the mods can manage. 2. This list is for exchange of resources related to mac computers and Apple products. It is *not* a chat forum. If you want to express thanks, or carry on a conversation with another member, please select their address from the header of their note and do this off list. We all don't really need to witness every conversation between individuals on the list. 3. When you are responding to a question, keep in mind that around 800 people are sifting through the large volume of messages here. Please make you post count by indicating to what you are responding, and by making a relevant point. Missives such as, "I'm going to try it." or, "great. Thanks," or "I'm in a hurry but I'll check it out later,.", are not terribly productive for 800 people to know. Please take a moment to consider your audience, and value their time. And lastly: 4. There are currently 3 people actively moderating the group: The list owner, Cara quinn: modelc...@gmail.com, Geoff Waaler: geoff.waa...@gmail.com and Carolyn Haas: chaas0...@gmail.com If you have questions, concerns, or aren't sure about something you want to post, please write to us privately. That's what we're here for. , We have an awesome combination of talents and resources and some great interchange going here. Let's keep it from getting too chaotic by observing a few very simple guidelines. Thanks very much for taking a minute to read this, and for being a valuable contributor to this list. Re: preview questions
Dear Denise, I sometimes run into that problem. I went to a web site to look up directions for a digital recorder. there were two different products and I downloaded both sets of instructions. In one case Preview and voice Over were able to read the instructions in the other case all I had was that the file was open in Preview. I don't have sighted assistance so I cannot tell you if there was actually any printed text either. It has been suggested to me that the issue is that the files may have ben created in a version of Adobe Acrobat that Preview does not support. I don't know how to confirm this. I hope someone else has an answer. accessible preview alternatives
Hello listers. Does anyone know of an accessible preview alternative? My biggest issue is that I have to use the VO and arrow keys to navigate around a document which doesn't allow my sighted peers to follow along with me. I think the speed of vmware fusion is fine, of course, it won't be as fast as boot camp, since it's using a virtual machine, also, fusion allows you to install windows without sighted help. Re: accessible preview alternatives
Hi Matthew! I've got two suggestions! 1, go to vo utility and under navigation change the mouse cursor to follow vo cursor! And if not that! 2, you could set tile visuals with the command vo+f10 This leaves [if you got normal screen] just the vo cursor and caption panel visible on a darkened screen! I do not know if either option would be of use to your problem! Colin Qapla! Preview documents for Denise
Hi Denise, I had the same thing happen to me. I downloaded a document telling my flight info and I opened it in Preview. THe only way that I've found to get these to read is to hit command up arrow, which will place you at the top of the document. THen press option control A which will read the document in its entirety. Sometimes just pressing command option shift and down arrow will let you interact with the text, enabling you to read it line by line. I hope this helps. Have a wonderful day. Re: Best way to navigate mac visionaries with web item router?
Hi Kevin I am not sure what you mean when you say "contracting the discussions so all you see is the watching this topic star and thread subject line" can you explain further please? Selecting all messages from sender or on subject in Mac Mail
Guys, I want to know how one chooses all the messages from a given sender, or on a given subject for deletion or moving to another folder. In the Windows Outlook days, there was a command that said, find all messages from sender, or find all related messages. What is the analog in Mac Mail? I have enough vision to see that when you land on a message which is part of a thread,, or from a given sender, all the other messages that are part of that thread, or from that sender, are highlighted in a given color. But they are definitely not selected in terms of being able to move or delete them. What should I do? Re: preview questions
Dear Cheng Ann, There are two separate questions. One is that Voice Over is unable to read certain .pdf documents. The other question is given that voice Over can read the document what are the keyboard commands to do this. The read all command is vo-a. You must interact with the text first This will read continuously. If you go to the menu bar and move to the "GO" Menu you will find the other keyboard commands I hope this helps. Re: Best way to navigate mac visionaries with web item router?
Hi Charlie, I'm not quite sure either what Kevin meant, but perhaps he is suggesting that you view the web page listed by topics and subject links? That is, the view you obtain if you use this version of the macvisionaries web page, with the topics argument as part of the URL: http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries/topics?hl=en Specifically, if you visit the web page URL for the macvisionaries list at Google Groups that appears at the very bottom of each post, to go to the home page, if you use item chooser menu to go to the "View All" link and press it (VO-Space with a keyboard, or double tap on an iOS device), you'll be taken to a list of discussion by thread, which give a link to the subject, and a brief summary of the beginning of the post. The View format under the "Discussions" heading has a link to "Topic List" as an alternative format to the "Topic Summary" which contains the initial lines of the post. This is my reconstruction of Kevin's recommendation. Basically, in the topic list view mode, you'll find posts listed by thread, with columns indicating "Topic", "Rating", "Messages", "Author", and "Date". At the beginning of each of these threads you'll hear an initial marker where VoiceOver announces "Link, click the star to watch this topic". You can use VO-Space to mark topics of special interest to you. Basically, if you just add a "/" and then "topic" to the end of the regular Google Groups address you'll get the web page topic list view format that I believe Kevin was recommending. At this point you could use the web rotor to navigate to the topics by setting to "links" My personal opinion, if you're just reading the list for content, is that the secondary archives at the Mail Archive web pages are far nicer to use: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/ Since you refer to "auto web spots", I assume that you're using a current laptop or desktop Mac with TrackPad and keyboard. The really nice feature of the Mail Archive is that it is a far superior way to search for any item in the archives (by subject, author, wild cards, and date range if you like), and lets you read up and down threads with access key combinations that work for any browser/computer platform. I can find items ten times faster using the Mail Archive site than I can if I have to use Google Groups. (Basically, the search algorithms are so good that that I can find posted items in these archives faster than I can searching my own mailbox, because I can't specify separate fields (like author and date range or sort order) simply by typing a few commands in a text box -- and this works way better for me than the Google Groups pages.) > The default is to show posts with their subject links in threaded mode, most > recent threads listed first. You can change this to time ordered mode, > latest posts first, by using Control-i, and then use Control-b to read > earlier posts. Here are the access key combinations: > Control-n (Next) Later message by thread > Control-p (Previous) Earlier message by thread > Control-f (Forward) Later message by date > Control-b (Back) Earlier message by date > Control-i (Index) Chronological index > Control-c (Contents) Thread index > > For more information on the Mail Archive search options, see their Web site > FAQ: > http://www.mail-archive.com/faq.html#search If you search for related content, in the archive, you can read either up or down the thread where the post you found appeared using Control-p or Control-n, and so understand the context of the discussion. By default, only the most recent 3000 posts show up in the direct chronological or threaded listings, but your can search for any posts that were archived by typing search terms in the text box. You can also use wild cards like the asterisk to match variant spellings. The most recent posts won't be indexed in the search immediately, but they show up much faster than on the Google Groups site -- within a few hours, rather than several hours or half a day. The only thing that you can't do is post from the Mail Archive site, since it's an archive only. HTH. Re: Best way to navigate mac visionaries with web item router?
Dear Esther and all, yes, I meant use topic list instead of topic summary. That way you can just say watch this topic and then read the subject lines. Your explanation of the archives was very interesting and I'll do my best to learn from it.
