Hi Charlie,

I'm not quite sure either what Kevin meant, but perhaps he is suggesting that
you view the web page listed by topics and subject links? That is, the view
you obtain if you use this version of the macvisionaries web page, with the
topics argument as part of the URL:
http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries/topics?hl=en

Specifically, if you visit the web page URL for the macvisionaries list at
Google Groups that appears at the very bottom of each post, to go to the home
page, if you use item chooser menu to go to the "View All" link and press it
(VO-Space with a keyboard, or double tap on an iOS device), you'll be taken to
a list of discussion by thread, which give a link to the subject, and a brief
summary of the beginning of the post. The View format under the "Discussions"
heading has a link to "Topic List" as an alternative format to the "Topic
Summary" which contains the initial lines of the post.

This is my reconstruction of Kevin's recommendation. Basically, in the topic
list view mode, you'll find posts listed by thread, with columns indicating
"Topic", "Rating", "Messages", "Author", and "Date". At the beginning of each
of these threads you'll hear an initial marker where VoiceOver announces
"Link, click the star to watch this topic". You can use VO-Space to mark
topics of special interest to you. Basically, if you just add a "/" and then
"topic" to the end of the regular Google Groups address you'll get the web page
topic list view format that I believe Kevin was recommending. At this point
you could use the web rotor to navigate to the topics by setting to "links"

My personal opinion, if you're just reading the list for content, is that the
secondary archives at the Mail Archive web pages are far nicer to use:
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/
Since you refer to "auto web spots", I assume that you're using a current
laptop or desktop Mac with TrackPad and keyboard. The really nice feature of
the Mail Archive is that it is a far superior way to search for any item in the
archives (by subject, author, wild cards, and date range if you like), and lets
you read up and down threads with access key combinations that work for any
browser/computer platform. I can find items ten times faster using the Mail
Archive site than I can if I have to use Google Groups. (Basically, the
search algorithms are so good that that I can find posted items in these
archives faster than I can searching my own mailbox, because I can't specify
separate fields (like author and date range or sort order) simply by typing a
few commands in a text box -- and this works way better for me than the Google
Groups pages.)

If you search for related content, in the archive, you can read either up or
down the thread where the post you found appeared using Control-p or Control-n,
and so understand the context of the discussion.

By default, only the most recent 3000 posts show up in the direct chronological
or threaded listings, but your can search for any posts that were archived by
typing search terms in the text box. You can also use wild cards like the
asterisk to match variant spellings. The most recent posts won't be indexed in
the search immediately, but they show up much faster than on the Google Groups
site -- within a few hours, rather than several hours or half a day. The only
thing that you can't do is post from the Mail Archive site, since it's an
archive only.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
