Re: Frustration With Groups and Address Book

2011-03-28 Thread Ray Foret Jr
The steps you've listed create much more work for this task than truly
necessary.

1. From the file menu, focus on "new group".

2. Turn Voice OVer off.

3. Press return.

4. Name the group.

5. Press return.

6. Turn Voice OVer back on.

That's it.

To rename a group,

1. Find the group in the group table.

2. Turn Voice OVer off.

3. Press return.

4. Rename the group.

5. Press return.

6. Turn Voice OVer back on.

HTH.

RE: Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

2011-03-28 Thread Gail the U. S. Male
Hi Johnny, if you go to Http://www.blindcooltech.com there is a series of
podcasts on the Mac. If you listen to those, I think you will see that the
Mac is very accessible! I bought my mac after listening to those podcasts,
and I'm using them as a basic training course, learning how to use the Mac.
You can also run windows on your Mac. Either through a virtual machine,
which seems most accessible for a blind person, or through a dual boot
system, using a program called "bootcamp" that gives you the best of both
worlds.

Subject: Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

Hi folks,
I'm not a Mac user yet, but I am learning sooo much by gtleaning from
this wonderful
list.
My question has to do with convincing the PA State agency that getting
VO and the
MacBook for me is a better choice then the traditional Windows screen
reader setup.
But I want to be completely honest with you:
Since I'm not currently an Apple products user, I really don't know if
the Mac is
really the best way for me to go. I'm an educated professional piano
technician
who is also a musician keyboardist. But the State won't purchase
anything for me
based on personal musical ambition. I have joined this list and the
AiPhone list
in order to hear for myself just how accessible the apple platform
really is. I
must say that I am quite amazed beyond words on how much blind folks are
able to
accomplish on the touch screen iPhone. So needless to say, I am looking
forward
to the iPhone 5 when it comes out, and I'll probably be getting
something in an iPhone
for myself at that time. But anyway, getting back to my situation with
the State
getting me some new computer equipment:
Their immediate response to my interests for having a Mac was negative.
Why? Because
the guy hired to do my equipment evaluation has had zero experience
using a Mac and
so he told the agency that he felt that it was in his opinion that it
was a bad idea
to get me a Mac. I immediately came back with saying to them that it
was my right
to make my own choice as to what equipment I would like to have use of.
And that
my choice of equipment was being discriminated against based on their
lack of knowledge
and understanding of the subject. They then quickly changed their tune
and gave
me another equipment evaluator to work with me who they say is familiar
with the
Mac platform and said that they would have to go with his
recommendations thereafter.
I have yet to meet with this second person.
Consequently, in the meantime I am needing to get as much concrete
evidence that
VO on a Mac is perfectly viable and that everything I need to do on the
MacBook is
accessible, or better yet, even better accessible then the Windows /
Microsoft platform
using the latest WE screen reader alone..
So I need to locate information supporting the ability for the blind to
be able to
use the MacBook successfully. Please be so kind as to briefly speak to
this matter
with either your own testimonies of your own success and support, or
negatatives
and concerns concerning the use of the Apple Mac platform for the blind
computer
user.
Thanks much,

Hi, Ray,

I believe the steps you outline assume that cursor tracking is on. I happen to
have it on most of the time, but there are those who don't.

Re: Are two drives alike?

2011-03-28 Thread Ashley Cox

both drives will work fine.
it's just the essential one spins at a faster spead.

you see this a lot, for example, if you search for sd ram on amazon. You
see some cheap SD ram, at about 11.99 each, then you see for "iMac g3 g4
eMac..." advertised ram for about 22.99 each. People seam to think that
just because you own a mac they can get more money.

Greetings all,

Recently a friend found a 500 GB Passport at the Apple store for twice what I
paid for my 1TB drive last year. It said that it was for MacOS, but since my
MBP has no trouble finding or reading my drive, I didn't see this deal as a
bargin exactly.

This afternoon I searched the US Amazon site for the string: "passport tb" and noticed that the
prices for the "mac" drives are consistently higher than their "windows" counterparts.
Two examples follow:

Western Digital My Passport SE for Mac 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard
Drive (Silver) $117.27
vs:
Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable
External Hard Drive (Black) (Windows) $89.99

I'm not certain whether these products are identical. The color varies, as does the fact
that the more expensive drive's description emits the word "essential", and
does not support USB 3.0 (which may not be applicable for MACOS yet anyway).

My older drive came with software that I never use -- is this the only
difference between the two drive models? If so, would I care about the
software in the MacOS platform? I assume I could se either drive with
timeMachine and to store files?

TIA for any input and best regards.
Geoff

Apple script for battery status

2011-03-28 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi All,
Someone posted a while back in search of an Apple script to get the battery
status on a MacBook. I've gone into the list archives and found this, which
I've bound to right-option-b in the keyboard commander. I can' claim credit
for it, but I hope its useful to anyone who wants it. It's pasted below. Make
sure you format it properly when getting this into AppleScript Editor.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

Re: Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

2011-03-28 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Johnny,
I think that overall the Mac should have little trouble doing what you have in
mind for it. I can't speak to database software myself, as I don't use any. I
know it exists though. I'm not a musician, and am in no position to comment
favorably or otherwise on a sequencer, though I'm sure that exists too.
As for my own experiences, they have been overwhelmingly positive. Apple has
done a great thing for the blind community, particularly because the Mac is the
only computer we can grab off the shelf from a store and use without any
special considerations. I can't stress enough how liberating that fact is.
True, the machines do cost a little more than PCs might, but you aren't paying
the $1,000 or so for Jaws or Window-Eyes, either.
I need to second the recommendations of others that you listen to Mike's
excellent podcast series to get the basics down. I did, and they were what
ultimately convinced me to switch. THanks for that, Mike!
I hope this helps somewhat, and that you ultimately decide to join the Mac
family.
Best,
Zack.

Frustrating issues/Needs with Skype 5.1 and Voice Over

2011-03-28 Thread Michael Busboom
I am currently in a rather serious situation where using Skype and its video
feature is a crucial need. Unfortunately, I recently downloaded Skype 5.1, and
its user interface is very very different from earlier versions such as 2.8
which, I believe, was the prior stable version.

Here are my questions and needs:

1. I can't find a way to navigate to contacts that aren't online. I've tried
going through some of the view options, but the best I can do is either get a
list of current online contacts or a history of recent contacts with whom I
have had conversations. It is important for me to gain access to my entire
Skype contact list.

2. I cannot find a way to easily turn on my web camera while conversing with
someone on Skype. In previous versions, I could use the Voice Over Find
command to get to the video button. In the current version of Skype, the
option to turn on and off the video at random is visually there, but I have
thus far been able to get Voice Over to go to it. I know that some people have
had luck, but for me, it has been hit and miss--mostly miss. Unfortunately, use
of the web camera is crucially important for me, and I am at a loss as to how
to configure Skype 5.1 so that I can quickly turn on and off the web camera.
Using the Skype preference of having the web camera automatically be turned on
when I call someone is not always an option, so I need to be able to turn this
feature on and off at will.

3. If it will be necessary for me to go back to an older version of Skype,
where can I find it?

If I sound desperate, I am. For professional reasons, I need these
capabilities.

My best to all,

Mike

Re: Frustrating issues/Needs with Skype 5.1 and Voice Over

2011-03-28 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Mike,
I can answer at least some of your questions. There is a way to see your
entire contact list in Skype 5. Whenever I log in, the first thing which
appears is my entire list, offline and all. It is useful to think of the Skype
5 layout as similar to the iTunes layout, as you have a list of categories on
the left and a dynamically changing list of options on the right, depending on
what you select on the left. I wouldn't mess with any view options until
you've gotten used to the default layout, which does work quite well.
I don't use the web cam much, so I'm afraid I can't help with those particular
questions. All I can say is explore the window using the VO cursor, and don't
overlook the menu bar and particularly the conversation menu.
Best,
Zack.

Re: Frustrating issues/Needs with Skype 5.1 and Voice Over

2011-03-28 Thread Simon Cavendish
DEar Mike,

Regarding your video issue - I'm totally blind so I wasn't aware but those with
whom I was talking told me that they couldn't see me - there is an option in
the preferences for Skype which you activate with command+comma and then you
interact with the toolbar and select the call button and look for the following
"Start video automatically at the beginning of a call checked check box" which
yo you check in order that you may be seen on camera.

The preference pane is probably worth exploring. I know it's frustrating - I've
had a few hairy moments myself.

Hope this helps.

2011-03-28 Thread Colin M
Hi Mike!
You can change the contacts view by command+3 this is the short cut for
contacts monitor or you can just press the contacts monitor button to get the
same thing!
Command+1 for Skype
Command+2 for dial pad!
There is also a command to add people but I do not no if this will help with
the camera!
That command is command+shift+a

Safari issues

2011-03-28 Thread carlene knight
This piece of junk software will hardly run with VO anymore. Sometimes it
won't even load pages without a fight. I improved the situation by unchecking
a box relating to the VO cursor when loading pages. I'm still having a lot of
problems though, especially on dynamic pages like those in Facebook, but right
now I am stuck on Google and a page won't even try to load. It's like I didn't
even ask it too though it says the button is pressed. I tried Chrome, but it
doesn't work quite right either. I've ran permission repairs recently and a
couple of months ago my husband set up a new Mac account entirely, totally
starting from scratch again. Does Web Kit work better? I've got to do
something before I go MacMad. I'm restarting VO several times a day, and
sometimes that doesn't even help. My sighted husband says that a lot of the
problem is VO as he watches web pages load that VO acts like aren't loaded.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have keyboard commender set, and did you make sure to press the right
option, as opposed to the left option or the command key?

Re: Safari issues

2011-03-28 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi,
All I can say is that I'm surprised you're having so many issues. My web pages
always seem to load quite quickly. I've occasionally ran into the issue of
Safari seeming not to want to load a particular page, but only when the site in
question was having problems of its own. May I ask how you are loading your
pages? Are you using cmd-l to get to the location bar and typing there?
That's what I do. I ask mostly because I'm not sure what you are talking about
when you say that VO says the button is pressed. Can you clarify what you mean
by being "stuck on Google?" I experienced a particular problem yesterday with
a page refusing to load, though, again, it was because the site was having its
own problems.
I'm sorry you're having such issues, but I can't reproduce them at all.
Best,
Zack.

Unlabeled Flash Player Buttons on http://bitesizeirish.com [Was, Re: Two unrelated inquiries: Garage band accessibility and unlabeled Flash Player buttons on Web site]

2011-03-28 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Christine,

I modified the subject line to separate this out from your Garageband question.
Flash is largely inaccessible using VO and I've pasted some details about that
at the bottom of this message. But first, here's a method you might find
helpful when attempting to access those flash elements on the Irish Gaelic
language lesson website. These tips came from other listers in the past, as we
all eventually bump up against the inaccessible Flash content issue at some
point. This workaround assumes you either have Mouse Keys turned on (Press the
Option key 5 times quickly to toggle mousekeys) or you have a mouse or trackpad
attached to your Mac and have the trackpad commander toggled off (VO + Rotor on
the trackpad).
1. Install Flash Player.
2. Install the Safari ClickToFlash extension as mentioned in my previous email.
3. Restart Safari.
4. Go to your website: http://bitesizeirish.com
5. Navigate to the "Demo" link and press VO Space.
6. Navigate to the free demo lesson and press VO Space.
7. Press Command + Control + A to tell Click To Flash to load all flash
elements on the current screen.
8. Navigate to item one in the demo lesson.
9. Press VO - Command - F5 to route the mouse cursor to the VO cursor. (Note --
Add the Fn key to that combo if using a macbook).
10. Use your Mouse Keys, trackpad or mouse to move the mouse cursor just
slightly to the left until you hear VO announce "Empty scroll area." This means
your mouse pointer is on the flash Play button. CLick your mouse or trackpad to
activate the play button and you should hear the pronunciation. Repeat steps 8,
9 & 10 for each item in the lesson.

As far as true accessibility of Flash Player under Mac OS, Adobe announced one
year ago that they would be implementing accessibility in the next major
release of Flash Player across Mac, Linux and Windows platforms. That major
release has yet to see the light of day and Adobe has given no ETA. Here's
their blog on the subject and you can add a comment to the blog if you so
desire.
http://blogs.adobe.com/accessibility/2010/03/flash_player_and_flex_support.html

Also, you might consider contacting the developers of the Gaelic lessons
website to ask if they could change from flash or add an accessible alternative.

HTH,
Bryan

Wow. Thanks so much for this; probably wait till this weekend so I can set
aside a block of time to try this! I did write to the developer, but did not
know what to suggest as an alternative to Flash. Are there any resources I
could send him?
Thanks.

Re: Frustrating issues/Needs with Skype 5.1 and Voice Over

2011-03-28 Thread carolyn Haas
Hi Michael:
I'll agree with you that Skype is kind of a mess these days. I can tell you I
managed to find the off-line contacts as "addressbook", which I was able to
expand and make some use of. Be sure to interact with every little thing when
you're exploring the Skype tables.

As far as going back to 2.8, my only suggestion would be to try googling for it.

Hope this helps just a little.

Re: acapella voices

Are the nuance voices available for the mac? I didn't think they were?

I'm using my 30 day demo of the acapela British voices right now and they seem
pretty responsive to me so far. I do get what you're saying about some
languages, though. That would drive me crazy if I had to deal with it all the
time.

Hi Carolyn!
Hopefully you have red my previous post to mike's question!
I forgot to mention last time that I've recently upgraded to Skype Version
5.1.0.914 and it has 2 tabs in the main window!
1st tab Skype
2nd tab address contacts!
So if you now pick the 2nd tab that will give you a list of your address book
numbers for landlines and mobiles and the 1st one gives you your Skype contacts!

Introducing myself, and a couple of questions

2011-03-28 Thread Gail the U. S. Male
Hi List. I just joined over the weekend. Thanks to Mike Arrigo's excellent
podcasts, I'm trying, and switching to the mac, once I'm a bit more
comfortable with it. I have a mac mini running Leopard.I've been a windows
user since 1998, but it's kind of fun learning the mac and voice over. Now
for my questions.
1. I use Magic Jack on my windows machine, and am wondering if it will work
on the mac, not running windows, or is there a good VOIP solution for the
mac?
2. I'd love to upgrade both my RAM and my hard drive. Is the Hard drive a
laptop drive?
3. Also, has anyone opened up a Mac Mini, and if so, could you write me off
list, and tell me how it opens?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me, and I'm sure I'll be coming back
with lots of questions, as I go forward on this journey.

Re: Introducing myself, and a couple of questions

2011-03-28 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Gail,

Welcome to the List! Some Mac Minis are harder than others to upgrade. Can you
tell us what model of Mini you have, the processor, RAM and hard drive size /
interface? You can find all of this info in the System Profiler application
found in your Applications / Utilities folder. Also tell us what exact version
of OSX you are running. You can find this by choosing the Apple menu and
selecting "About this Mac."

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

2011-03-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
I find it interesting that the first evaluator made a recomendation about
something he knew nothing about. It really depends on what you want to do. All
of the common tasks one would use a computer for are useable on the mac
platform? You might also mention that with the mac, there will not be separate
fees to upgrade the screen reader. I have a macbook, and I love it. Is voice
over perfect, no, but no screen reader is perfect. If someone tells you a
certain screen reader is the best, or is perfect, that should raise a red flag.
However, I would put the features and useability of voiceover against any of
the windows screen readers any day.

Re: Bluetooth on Brailliant 40 Display

2011-03-28 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi James,

I get that message sometimes with my Connect 24 even though I'm using it
regularly. I have to forget the device and set up the pairing again.
Obviously a bug that hopefully Apple will fix. Just ignore that message and do
what you need to do to get it to work.

Re: Introducing myself, and a couple of questions

2011-03-28 Thread Ashley Cox

I can answer the last 2 questions.
It is possible to upgrade the ram and the hdd; they are both laptop
components. The harddrive is a 5400 rpm sata laptop harddrive.

how to get inside?
depends what mac mini you have. If you have the 2007-2009 mac mini (or a
power pc mac mini), not one of the aluminium ones, you must use one of
those long flat knives, I forget what they're called. Turn the mac
up-side-down, and press the nice in the crack between the metal outside
and the plastic base. Push up gently, and apply a little more force if
needed, untill the metal pops out. You will hear pops and clicks, this
is normal.

once all sides are done, lift the mac mini out of the top.

teh components you want to upgrade are right at the bottom. There are
some spring-loaded arials for the airport and bluethooth, find and
remove them by pushing the 2 clips (be very, very gentle).

\
then, in each corner of the cd drive is a screw, remove all 4 (the
bottom right is a little longer)

lift the cd drive assembley out, and unplug it. there's teh harddrive in
the cage underneath that. and near that is the ram.

If you have one of the latest mac minis, the unibody aluminium one, turn
the mac up-side-down and feel for the small indentations in the bottom.
Put your fingers into them, and twist to the left. the bottom will turn.
Then, life it off and...

hth!
