DEar Mike, Regarding your video issue - I'm totally blind so I wasn't aware but those with whom I was talking told me that they couldn't see me - there is an option in the preferences for Skype which you activate with command+comma and then you interact with the toolbar and select the call button and look for the following "Start video automatically at the beginning of a call checked check box" which yo you check in order that you may be seen on camera.
The preference pane is probably worth exploring. I know it's frustrating - I've had a few hairy moments myself. Hope this helps.
