Re: Pitchfork.com causes safari to crash with VO

2011-03-05 Thread Andre Nuno Soares
Greetings from a fellow music nut,

The problem is with the navigation links at the top, if you immediately jump to
the first header Safari doesn't crash.
Also, the ForkCasts section isn't accessible, or rather the videos aren't, as
it uses an embedded flash player, and Flash isn't accessible with VO.

HTH,
André
PS: I really, really wish Safari's plugin system could support NoScript, as
most of VO/Safari problems seem to be around javascript.

Re: Is there a command to announce the time on a Mac?

2011-03-05 Thread Andre Nuno Soares
Hello Neil/Colin,

My bad, I forgot cursor wrapping was an option in VO. Since in QuickNav the
left an right arrow keys are the same as VO + left or right keys, the behavior
will depend on your configuration.

BTW, this option is configured in Voice Over Utility, Navigation category,
"allow cursor wrapping".

Personally I prefer to have it disabled as I feel it gives a more physical
layout of the screen, and I don't get lost in an Infinite Loop :-)

time-related voice feature I've found is the ability to announce the

there a way to have the time announced when I want to hear it?

Hello Donna,

No, the most you can do is activate restrictions, but those are meant more like
parental control or to make sure someone you lend your device to doesn't do
something you don't want them to.

Still, might be useful to make sure your husband doesn't use the iPad to check
Cristiano Ronaldo's girlfriend in the latest Sports Illustrated :-)

I haven't found anything to consistently work around the "See more stories"
link. However, several times I have clicked on it, then began reading back and
forth a bit with vo+right or left arrows, and magically, it will begin reading
more stories. Although, it doesn't work every time for me, and toggling vo off
and back on again doesn't seem to have the same effect. I'll just have to keep
playing with it.

Ah well, if anyone ever finds one, then please post it here, as it

Re: reading attachments in mail

2011-03-05 Thread erik burggraaf
When you have a message with an attachment,
Press enter to open the message in it's own window.
Press control option left arrow until you hear slideshow button.
Press control option space.
What happens next depends on the nature of the attachment. PDF, word, and RTF
files open in an html area which you need to interact with to read the contents.
Sound files supported on mac OS such as wav and mp3 start to play.
When you are finished with an attachment press space bar or command W.

Hope this helps,

Trade in Macbook Air toward a Macbook Pro?

2011-03-05 Thread Eric Brinkman
I bought the 13-inch Macbook Air sorta on impulse when it came out at
the end of October as I was itching to try a Mac. However, now I'm
thinking that I should've purchased a Macbook Pro, since I'd really
like to use it as my primary computer. I was just looking at expercom
which seems to have a trade-in program that seems promising. Has
anyone dealt with them or know of any other options that might be of
use to me?

Thanks in advance.

Importing Sent mail from Outlook to Apple Mail

2011-03-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I just got my Mac Mini back from having all the data migrated from my
old Sony. Unfortunately they missed my Sent Folder from Outlook 2002. I
really don't wan to send the two machines back to have them try again. My wife,
did some reading and found that Thunderbird or O to M loaded on the PC could
help fix this last remaining glitch. Do any of you have recommendations on
which of these, or other solutions could work? Again, I don't want to redo the
entire thing. I just want to export one Sent Mail folder into a format that
Mac Mail can import and turn into MBOX. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Kevin

When it says that, it means that you have to update the apps. You need to go
to the Apps section of your Library and tab till you hear whatever the number
is and the word updates. Hit vo-space on that button and it'll ask if you want
to download all free updates. Tell it yes, and then all the apps will be
updated.

The inaccessibility of Flash with VO

2011-03-05 Thread Eric Brinkman
After reading the latest response in my Pitchfork thread, I'm curious
how big of a problem people find the lack of Flash support with VO to
be. I can applaud Jobs' anti-Flash position, since I've always found
unlabeled buttons in Flash players to be annoying with Jaws. But
there is so much flash content on the web that total inaccessibility
on the Mac almost seems like a serious limitation. Should I consider
putting Windows on my Mac just to have Flash support with a
screen-reader? How do others feel about the flash inaccessibility?

Thanks,
Eric

Re: The inaccessibility of Flash with VO

2011-03-05 Thread Ryan Mann
If you watch videos on the web, you should put Windows on your mac. There are
videos on the on-demand section of freespeech.org that I cannot play since they
use flash. The problem is that on some videos, there is a play button that you
have to activate. Since the button is a flash element, VoiceOver doesn't see
it.

Speaking personally, I don't use flash enough to mind its inaccessibility with

Re: The inaccessibility of Flash with VO

2011-03-05 Thread Mike Arrigo
Thi depends on what sites you need to use. I use youtube, and though this uses
flash, I don't have to click anything, so it's not as big a deal. On the other
hand, some sites require you to interact with flash content, and at this point,
using windows is the only option. Let's hope that html 5 catches on, if it
does, flash will hopefully be replaced with it.

Re: The inaccessibility of Flash with VO

flash is completely inaccessible with vo. I have been bugging the devs over at
adobe for a while now and all I get is form letter responses. I think they are
actually bit-bucketing my e-nails instead of simply taking a look to see what
they can do.

I don't have a windows box here to dedicate to running something just to
interact with flash. financially, its a waste of resources.

Re: The inaccessibility of Flash with VO

2011-03-05 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Eric,

In March of 2010, almost a year ago, Adobe posted a blog announcing that the
next "major" release of Flash Player will, "...enable
accessibility across all three major operating systems (Windows, Mac, and
Linux)." . Apparently the next major release will be Flash 11, or
whatever they choose to name the successor to Flash Player 10. Unfortunately,
Adobe very recently released Flash Player 10.2 which leads me to think they are
still far away from a new major release. I've pasted the link to this blog post
and you might consider adding a comment to the bottom of the post, as it
appears some other folks on this list have previously done.

http://blogs.adobe.com/accessibility/2010/03/flash_player_and_flex_support.html

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Accessible MUD client

2011-03-05 Thread Andre Nuno Soares
Hello,

Several years ago I used Tiny Fugue in Unix machines, and it apparently also
supports Mac OSX.
It runs in a terminal and I remember it had a mode where the screen wasn't
split between display and input areas, so if telnet and terminal works well
with VO tf should also.

Check it out at:
http://tinyfugue.sourceforge.net/

A quick google only found binaries for PPC, but still... hope this is useful to
someone :-)

What about the safari extension that makes at least some flash accessible?
That's what makes the samples on audible so easy to play compared to Windows,

Re: Accessible MUD client

2011-03-05 Thread Chris Norman
Hi ALl,
I can use telnet, but that's a bit like saying "Why not use a piece of
paper, instead of a computer?" LOL. A MUD client gives you access to a
whole load of stuff you can't get with telnet, trigger, and aliases to
name just 2, although it does work, after a fashion. Voiceover chops
off the ends of lines though, as it starts reading new lines, as the
old ones disappear. In a lot of situations (more than not), this
behaviour would be unpleasant to say the least LOL.

MUD's don't run on SSH, so telnet will have to do! :P

Cheers all once again.

Hello Stephanie,

To enable automatic login", go to System Preferences, Accounts and interact
with "Accounts, Groups and Login Options". Do VO down arrow until you get to
Login Options, and stop interacting.
VO right arrow twice and you have the Automatic Login popup button, where you
can choose which account to login automatically, or to set it to off.

Note that if you are sharing your Mac with them, it may be a better solution to
disable automatic login, and for instance set their account with no password.

Re: The inaccessibility of Flash with VO

2011-03-05 Thread Kevin Shaw
Flash sucks. It's memory intensive, proprietary and made by a company that
doesn't care about universal design or accessibility. The odd time I've
encountered a Flash intensive page, I've managed to find some type of
workaround by getting the information from somewhere else or having someone
fill me in on what I've missed. I'm not certain Flash has a future on the web,
as HTML 5 and other open standards are being adopted quickly.

Having used JAWS on the Windows side with Flash intensive pages, I can
certainly say I don't miss the experience, button labels notwithstanding.
Perhaps, one day, Flash will be deprecated and coded into the pages of history
alongside the Laserdisc, Betamax and 40 meg hard drives.

How can I maximize Safari?

2011-03-05 Thread Eric Brinkman
Since I have some limited vision, I like being able to see the web
pages I view, and I see best when they take up the entire screen. On
the Mac, their doesn't seem to be a maximize button. There's just the
minimize and zoom button. Also, I find it sorta interesting that when
I first got my Mac, the Safari window was centered in the screen.
Then I did something (I think zoomed in and then out) and now the
window is always on the left side of the screen. Is there a way I can
maximize it like hitting alt-space and then X in windows.

I apologize if I seem to be asking tons of questions that have been
asked 80 billion times by newbies.

Thanks,
Eric

Subject: VmWare Fusion, xp and jaws

Hi Everyone,

Just got my new macbook pro yesterday.

I'm trying to configure a virtual machine using vmware fusion and jaws.

I have taken an existing xp machine from my linux install. It appears
to boot up fine, and jaws starts talking, complaining about the video
intercept not being installed actualy :(.

My issue is of course that the capslock key is being captured by VO.
Seamingly the same for alt tab.

I initially tried virtualbox which is what I use under linux, but it's
sound performance was crap.

From the small amount of talking jaws has managed to do sound appears
quite clean in fusion.

Can anyone offer any hints as to how one gets around this capslock
issue?

I've done a bit of a search and have found a couple of people having the
same issue but no good work arounds.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Bart

Re: VmWare Fusion, xp and jaws

2011-03-05 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi,
I use a program someone else recommended on this list by the name of SharpKeys.
I remap left command to caps lock and use ctrl+escape to open the start menu
instead of that key's normal function, which is the left Windows key. Alt+tab
is done with option+tab.
Googling for SharpKeys should get you a download link.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

Re: reading attachments in mail

2011-03-05 Thread Robert Nelson
Dear Denise,

I am totally blind now, so I don't have any use for the quick look button in
mail. According to the Mail Help topic it is used to view images or a slide
show. Well if it is a slide show or image VoiceOver is not going to be able
to read it. It is possible that if the images have captions then VoiceOver may
be able to read them, but I cannot help with that.

If the attachment is a MicroSoft Word file it should end with a .doc file type.
If you click on it with the spacebar it should open in TextEdit and you should
be able to read the file.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely Yours,
robert Nelson

I think that the refresh of the air was done last month, and they don't really

Re: macbook air vs ipad 2

2011-03-05 Thread David Tanner
Well, let's see, the iPad is clunkier to carry around than an iPhone or
iTouch. The iPad is almost as expensive as buying the basic MacBook Pro 13
with two gigabytes of memory, and the processor in the new iPad is only a
1.0 gigahert duel core processor. The MacBook Pro 13 has a lot faster
processor than that and so does the Ayer if you want to pay the higher price
for solid state memory instead of a hard drive.

The iPad makes me think of all the blind folks that have complained about
the size of the PacMate QT. In fact, I don't think that the PacMate QT
would be as large in flat area as the iPad.

Me personally,

If I need to get work done, I would go with a Macbook air. Its a full
fledged computer, and besides the added size, you will find yourself bumping
up against less barriers when trying to get things done. Especially if you
have an iPhone or iPod touch already. What are you really missing in not
getting an iPad?

Yeah, I have an overdrive but canceled the service. It worked ok,
especially when stationary but when moving WIMAX sucks. I kept dropping
connections and other than checking mail at speed it wasn't that great.

Stationary though it was pretty fast. I usually got around 6 megabits.
I'm wondering what the 4G droid users will find since that uses WIMAX as
well.

Re: macbook air vs ipad 2

2011-03-05 Thread Cheree
Cheree Heppe here:
I like the IPad, actually.

I went for the I-devicees first because they open a very intuitive, easy entre
into the Apple environment. No commands and keystroke chording and what seemed
to me a quick start interface.

In a bit, I'm ggoing to get an Air or Mac, but would have done so with much
more trepidation if not having tried the I-devices first.

As to the base measurements of a PacMate being smaller than an IPad, true, but
that's only a single dimension.

Cheree Heppe

connecting my ThinkGeek keyboard

2011-03-05 Thread Cheree
This keyboard has a very long stand by time, so I don't turn it off.
When I first got it, I thought the keyboard had to be re-paired every time
after it went to sleep.
Turns out that if I press the enter key, the keyboard wakes up in connected
mode.

2011-03-05 Thread Eric Brinkman
When I first got my Mac, the main Facebook site didn't seem to work
too well with Voiceover. It seems to work a little better now
although I still find it too cluttered which makes me not want to
check it regularly.

a 1.0 gigahert duel core processor. The MacBook Pro 13 has a lot faster
processor than that and so does the Ayer if you want to pay the higher
price for solid state memory instead of a hard drive.

The iPad makes me think of all the blind folks that have complained about
the size of the PacMate QT. In fact, I don't think that the PacMate QT
would be as large in flat area as the iPad.

 Me personally,

If I need to get work done, I would go with a Macbook air. Its a full
fledged computer, and besides the added size, you will find yourself
bumping up against less barriers when trying to get things done.
Especially if you have an iPhone or iPod touch already. What are you
really missing in not getting an iPad?

Re: Very annoying "Safari Busy" message

2011-03-05 Thread Christina
Ok, I've had major problems with the mobile Facebook site the past few days.
It's like they changed things. I used to get a new page if I clicked "see more
stories". Now it just expands the page and I have to vo plus right or down
arrow down until I get to the next stories. This means I have to arrow through
the ones I just read. What a pain. I also get the busy busy busy thing. The
thing I found that helps is turning VO off and then back again. Someone
already mentioned this already but I just wanted to say that this is the only
work around I have found.

What is Friend Mail?

DVD Ripping software on the Mac?

2011-03-05 Thread James Malone
Hi guys. Does anyone know of a good DVD ripper for the Mac? I've tried
handbreak, but it all seems to put it in to 1 big chunky file. I have a TV
series I'd like to rip, and I'd like each EP to be in a seperate file
