Re: The Verizon iPhone is not as accessible to deaf and hard of hearing as AT&T's iPhone
No worries. I'm learning too. CDMA only 1 signal or data stream can get in at a time so let's say you are deaf and you make a phone call. that's a data stream. your captioning software is another. that cannot work as that's 2 data streams. on a gsm network I can have my email, my captioning program, my twitter, my texts and my phone call running and no issues as long as the network does not mind. lol! Web Kit navigation getting weird
Okay, This is just too weird. Using Web Kit, (yes, I have the latest build), I went to: www.catholicmatch.com and discovered that, although the page is layed out by heading, it's not possible using Web Kit to navigate by headings using VO+command+h anymore. It is still possible using Safari. What gives with this? Also, when entering my password using Web Kit, (this applies both to BARD and catholicmatch.com), I hear, "bullit" with the press of every character. Can anybody tell me what's up with this and how to get it back to normal? Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now A Very Proud and very happy Mac user!!! Re: Apple Seeds iOS 4.3 Beta to Developers
Lets be honest, the fast speech bug probably isn't going to be fixed. I've noticed and perhaps it's just me beeing picky, but apples bug pattern for ios goes something like: Release new version of ios. Fix 1 or 2 bugs that were introduced in the previous version. Introduce a few more. Repeat. Don't get me wrong, ios is probably the best operating system for a phone that there is, but accessibility must have got hundreds of emails from us about that fast speech bug, so I'm not hopefull. Yeah, I have a flying saucer airport base station sitting next to my UUNET mug and my 5GB ipod with a moving scroll wheel. very strange behavior of keyboard and trackpad
Last night, a glass of wine got spilled on my Macbook Pro15 running OS10.6.6. VO keys still do work, though, and the apps are running just fine. It's as if my cursor focus gets changed or knocked out of alignment, and I've checked all my VO settings and they are not changed. I'm wondering if there is either a way to disable the track pad, since I don't use Track Pad Commander all that much, or a keyboard or track pad setting I can check for change? I'd hate to send this all the way back to Apple just for what is maybe a changed setting or something... • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi. You are right, the combinations work because of the global language of the system. adjusting the order of columns (Mac Mail)
Ricardo et al, following your successful instructions to resolve my list order problem, I have another question. Re: adjusting the order of columns (Mac Mail)
I have tried several ways to adjust the order of columns in Mail and none were successful. I believe I used to do this when I I had sight. I believe the process was to either drag the column headers (which can be found with the trackpad commander) or dragging the line between columns. I would expect the latter would adjust widths and not position. Keep us informed if you find a way. Re: Non english layouts in VoiceOver search
Hi AZ and Anne, > On 13 Jan 2011, at 06:23, AZ wrote: >> >> If i treat them like english nothing happens. >> AZ is using a Russian language localization. When you use other languages with VoiceOver on the Mac there are three components: 1) the voice -- Russian Infovox voice Alyona from AssistiveWare; 2) the input language keyboard -- Russian Cyrillic character entry; 3) the language localization -- determines language of spell checker and grammar checker, window labels, and the language of your Help instructions. AZ should be able to use the standard OS X Mac keyboard shortcuts for "find" and "find next" that are used by other Russian Mac users if he reads in TextEdit. I can't check this without setting up an account with Russian localization, but when I read Russian text I usually use TextEdit. I use the built-in OS X shortcuts for "find" and "find next" by pressing Command+f and Command+g to search for text. My guess is that these shortcuts, or at least "Command+f", work the same way for a Russian Mac user, since AZ mentioned using "Ctrl+f" for Windows and Jaws. In any case, there should be standard OS X Mac keyboard shortcut equivalents for searching for a Mac Russian keyboard+language localization that will work with VoiceOver in TextEdit, even if the shortcut is not "Command+f". When I read Russian text or equations with special characters, I usually do this from TextEdit, which is best at handling extended character sets. I switch voices, and I switch input language keyboards (to move to previous and next input language, which I have set up on my system to be Option+Shift+Space and Option+Space). If the text is on a web page, I'll send it to TextEdit by using a services menu option "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection". This is an option that can be set up under System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts when "Services" is selected in the table of Shortcuts collections, and the "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection" service is checked in the second table of services shortcuts under the list of text services. The easy way to use this is to assign it a keyboard shortcut. Then you can select text, or use Command-a to select all, and use your custom keyboard shortcut for "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection", and a TextEdit window with the selected text will appear. To search for text, I press Command+f, where "f" is located at the position of the "f" for English input, and then either type or paste in the text (which can be in Cyrillic). The shortcut may use a different key for Russian Mac use, but you can probably find out which key is used for "Find" by doing a Google search of Russian Mac sites. The issue is VoiceOver searching and keyboard shortcut commands with non-Roman keyboard input languages (e.g., Russian, Greek, Arabic) rather than non-English layouts. As long as the keyboard can generate Roman alphabet letters, it is possible to issue VoiceOver commands through some combination of typing, keyboard shortcuts, or through the VoiceOver Commands or Help menus (e.g., VO-h-h). For Anne, and others who may be interested, I launched TextEdit with a Russian localization from Terminal with this command: /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit -AppleLanguages '(ru)' & The argument with "ru" to the AppleLanguages switch specifies the languages localization to be Russian -- it would be "en" for English, "fr" for French, "de" for German, etc. The ampersand sign at the end of the line indicates this command should be spawned as a background process. That means that when TextEdit starts up in the GUI, I can continue to use Terminal to type commands. If I don't include the ampersand before pressing the return key after typing this command, I won't regain control of Terminal until TextEdit closes in the GUI. If you launch TextEdit this way from Terminal, you should not have TextEdit already open in the GUI. The difference in choosing the Russian language localization here, is that the windows will be labeled in Russian, and the dialog windows and pop up buttons will display the commands for the options to "Find", "Replace", etc. in Russian rather than in English. And by default spell checking and grammar checking will be done in Russian. Again, my account is set up with a U.S. English localization. Also, I'll just mention that there is a Russian phonetic input keyboard option. This won't be of interest to native Russian users, but it might be of interest to users who are used to touch-typing on English input keyboards. This places the keys for Cyrillic letters where their English phonetic equivalents would be -- so the first letter in the alphabet is associated with the "a" key on an English keyboard, the second is associated with "b", and the third (a "v" sound) with "v", etc. HTH. Re: The Verizon iPhone is not as accessible to deaf and hard of hearing as AT&T's iPhone
Actually that's a pretty ignorant comment. CDMA has lots of advantages over GSM. First, CDMA has power adaptation. This means if you're near the cell or in clear range the transmitter uses less output than say in low signal settings. The cell tower also has this funtionality. You can use fewer towers, CDMA has much better propegation characteristics than GSM and while the cost of a GSM cell is lower than CDMA the higher number of Cell sites required by GSM more than offsets any cost increase by the CDMA gear. CDMA has better priority control. This means emergency services can use CDMA and have a higher call priority than say average users so that in the event of natural disasters or public emergency the first responder calls will complete ahead of average users. CDMA cell hand off is more efficient. This means that you tend to drop your session less swapping cells than with GSM. Latest revisions of CDMA support sim cards called ROOM cards so you can swap phones easily. (not available in the US yet to my knowledge) CDMA call quality is far better than the current GSM / UMTS standard. More CODECS are available and unlike GSM take advantage of variable bit rate technology. Look at EVRC or SMV to learn more about this. It's not as cut and dry as you'd make it.:) On Jan 13, 2011, at 12:41 AM, Chris Moore wrote: > God! sounds crap! Why the hell would anyone want CDMA then? Re: The Verizon iPhone is not as accessible to deaf and hard of hearing as AT&T's iPhone
Great questions. CDMA uses a spec where voice and data are not available at the same time. This means if you're on a voice call you can't pull down wb pages or mail etc. This is a problem for the deaf because they use call captioning services. What these do is provide a just about near real time written transcript of what's being said by the far end. I believe voice recognition is used for this and the output text is displayed on a web type interface that the deaf user views while on the phone. As you know many if not most deaf people can speak very well it's just hearing the far end that's the challenge. On GSM / UMTS devices you can easily see the web content and talk at the same time bcause that facility is provided as part of the protocol, CDMA this is not the case. Hope that clears it up a little. On Jan 12, 2011, at 11:44 PM, Chris Moore wrote: > Sorry for coming across a bit thick here. Safari weirdness.
Greetings, I'm having varied symptoms browsing on my MBP. Perhaps the two are related -- I'm guessing so. It all started when Webkit randomly hung up. I would press the submit button in a form and then Voiceover would repeatidly announce "safari busy" and "safari ready". Pressing a key did not take and I had to close and reopen the browser. Next, I was unable to update Webkit. Since that problem appeared to be unique to me I erased webkit.app and attempted to download the current build. For several days now I click on the download link and after about 30 seconds I receive the following message: Safari can’t open the page “http://nightly.webkit.org/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding. I can't load that URL on my XP machine either, but can't imagine that my ISP is blocking it? I'm also having problems displaying other pages. For example, I'm attempting to register at the Apple developer site and it hangs after I press submit. I killed my cookies, but this had no affect. Could not find how to clear any other cache that could be a factor? Is it time to reinstall Snow leopard? Btw, version 10.6.7 is installed, but my problem began before this update was available. TIA for any suggestions. Geoff -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. could current Web Kit weirdness signal serious browsing issues ahead for VO users?
Okay, For those of you who use Web Kit and who have noticed the recent weirdness of passwords fields saying "bullit" instead of clicking when text is typed in to them, and, in the case of some sites where navigation by hot keys such as VO+command+h or VO+command+n is no longer possible, I just wonder; with some concern whether or not this will cause major issues for browsing with future versions of Safari. I know that every time I try to log in to: www.verizonwireless.com with Safari and then try to tab from place to place, Safari will always crash; yet, when I log in with Web Kit, I don't get crashes, but, navigation is much more tedious. I'm not much caring for the picture that seems to be emerging and I wonder what will happen when Lion comes out. Will accesible browsing be broken because of these changes, or, will we see even better browsing experiences than we know now? Frankly, I'm a little concerned here. Re: adjusting the order of columns (Mac Mail)
H, Let's see if I can explain how to do this. You will need to do this for each mail box that you are in. Well, at least I think. Go to the view menu, then columns submenu. Then uncheck all of most of the columns you want except for the column you want to be first. Then go back into the view menu, then the columns submenu and recheck the columns you would like but do them in the order you want them to show up. For example, if you want the from column first. You will uncheck all but the from column. Then if you want the subject column then you would go back into the view menu and then check subject. Then you would continue to check the columns in the order that you want. I hope this helps and that I did not confuse you too much, Good luck, Christina On Jan 13, 2011, at 8:46 AM, Neil Barnfather - TalkNav wrote: > Ricardo et al, > > following your successful instructions to resolve my list order problem, I > have another question. > > I have five mailboxes configured in Mail, all good so far, one problem is > that for certain mailboxes I like to know the sender, subject and finally the > date sent, yet others I like to know the subject first. say for my forums > account. > > Is there a way of adjusting the columns order as shown, and secondly, can > this be done mailbox independently, i.e. so that I have multiple view types, > or will one view arrangement apply across the board? > > many thanks. > > > > > Regards, > > Neil Barnfather > Talks List Administrator > > Twitter @NeilBarnfather > > TalkNav is a Nuance, Code Factory and Sendero dealer, for all your > accessible phone, PDA and GPS related enquiries visit www.talknav.com > > URL: - www.talknav.com > e-mail: - serv...@talknav.com > Phone: - +44 844 999 4199 > > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "MacVisionaries" group. > To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > macvisionaries+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries?hl=en. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Scott. You buy Nike trainers. Underneath the left sole which you lift up, there is a small hole. In the hole there is a small foam which is round. You lift it out and put your sensor in it. In praise of OSX and VmWare
Hi All, This is just a quick message to say how much I'm appreciating OS X in general since switching to it, and VmWare in particular. I find that I seem to have the best of both worlds here, and am pleasantly surprised by the speed and responsiveness. For what it's worth, I've recently switched to Webkit and have encountered no problems, and am confident that any I do find will be addressed in due course. Thanks, Mike, for excellent podcasts, and thanks to everybody here for a friendly and helpful community. It might just be easier to arrow down to the podcast you want to download, then press vo/shift+m and then arrow up once to download episode. Press return, and you're good to go. That's what I do. change your online presence on the Skype website. also, change your privacy settings to "requires approval" and the other setting to "only accept message from users on your contact list". those changes often cut spam to nothing. Re: could current Web Kit weirdness signal serious browsing issues ahead for VO users?
I note that With BARD, I can still navigate by headings; but, with: www.catholicmatch.com I can only navigate by headings using Safari. Navigating Verizon wireless's site is much slower using Web Kit; but, if I use VO+command+n rather than tabbing, (in Safari), I don't wind up crashing it. On the other hand, Tabbing through the Verizon Wireless site using Safari will crash it. Web Kit won't crash with the Verizon wireless site; but, navigational hot keys just don't work. web browser speed

Re: web browser speed
Same here, no problem running it but its a bit sluggish running the pref pane. However, viewing the options it seems to have some interesting bits in it, namely putting all web caches to RAM disk. Since RAM right now is at about 1.4 gbps, i can safely assume this would boost load times comparatively since HDDs are at about 80mpbs and SSDs at 160 to 220 mbps thats like from 5 to over 10 fold the speed for loading. It is said though that internet connections also need to be speedy for a mind blowing effect. Slower broadbands can still benefit this. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
