Great questions.

CDMA uses a spec where voice and data are not available at the same time.  This 
means if you're on a voice call you can't pull down wb pages or mail etc.  This 
is a problem for the deaf because they use call captioning services.  What 
these do is provide a just about near real time written transcript of what's 
being said by the far end.  I believe voice recognition is used for this and 
the output text is displayed on a web type interface that the deaf user views 
while on the phone.  As you know many if not most deaf people can speak very 
well it's just hearing the far end that's the challenge.  On GSM / UMTS devices 
you can easily see the web content and talk at the same time bcause that 
facility is provided as part of the protocol, CDMA this is not the case.
