Re: help with itunes and syncing podcasts please?

2010-12-27 Thread Daniel Montalvo Charameli
Hi:

I hoped that the new itunes 10.1 would solve this problem, but it did not. AS i
told you in a prior message, I have the same problem since Itunes 10.0. I
restarted my Iphone, deleted all the podcasts from my mac and subscribed to
them again. The problem was still the same. I came to a solution, which is not
very accessible but at least I get it to work. I connect the Iphone to my
mac and Itunes launches automatically. Then I select my device from the sources
table, after that I select the podcast radio button, then I interact with the
podcast area and then with the podcast table. When I reach the podcast I want
to sync, I just press the space bar, without interacting with the group which
checkbox is deemed. By pressing the space bar, you toggle the selection status
between on and off. The lack of accessibility here is that voice over does not
tell you that! You have to infer whether or not you have selected anything by
going to the number of episodes that are about to sync, which is to the left of
the podcast table.

Hope it helps.

Re: deleting wireless connection

2010-12-27 Thread Jon Cohn
First make sure the network control panel is unlocked. the Lock is the last
item in the control panel.

Now, select the advanced button and you should find under the Airport tab a
table of defined networks.

Select

the networks from that table that you want to delete. Then stop interacting
with the table and move right. You should find: "Airport preferred Network
Control Group" Within this group are add, remove and edit buttons.

Best of luck.

HInts on terminal usage.

2010-12-27 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I believe I have found why the terminal app is flakey when using it for long
sessions. It appears the default memory to keep scroll back is infinate. And
since there is a ever growing text region for VoiceOver to handle it gets more
and more slugish. I suggest going into the terminal preferences and setting
scroll back to a value under 5000.

I get far fewer busy messages and terminal / voice over crashes.

Best,

Jon

Dear Laura,

I am sorry I cannot help you. I have an IMac and whenever I update my VO
settings either through Voice Utility or the keyboard shortcut of
control-option-command right arrow, left arrow etc or using the control VO+v
verbosity dialogue box it saves the settings forever or until I make any
changes. It saves them automatically when I close the dialogue box or
utility window.I have no idea why your system reverts to the default

Select the jump menu in the table of commands, then pick bottom most item!
Then pick a key for it [ I've picked the number 2 key]
Then just repeat but pick top most item not the topmost visible item or bottom
most visible item!
And of course I've selected number 1 for the top!
So in the subject field if I now press right arrow+2 I get to the last message

Re: Finding out Battery status

Hi Colin.

Well, I just copied Hai's script and then brought up the apple script app in
the utilities folder, pasted it in and chose save. It defaulted to documents.
I made a copy of that and put it into the apple script utility folder but that
didn't work either.

Thanks for trying to help. At least I am now beginning to ask questions from

Re: IPad questions

2010-12-27 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi Garth and list:
Back on the MBP for the moment. Well, apparently, it did sync some contacts,
and some songs. My daughter just went thrugh and organized my contacts on the
iPad, which would've taken me several months, a ton of gray hair, not to
mention several rum and coke binges; none of which sound like fun.:)

Now I just have to get the address book on the mac to look that nice.:)

I have to say, observing her do that really brought home to me how much of a
struggle things like contacts and address books can be when they get balled
up. They take us far more time and effort than sighted folks to fix up.:)
Anyhow, I'm still wondering why my contacts wouldn't complete an email address.
For example, I put in Mac for macvisionaries, and nothing would happen. Is
there an auto complete or smart address feature I'm missing on the iPad?
Also, I don't really see my whole music library on the iPad. So, I'm not quite
out of the woods yet.
Since I'm still pondering, I'll ask one more: Is there a way to now copy the
corrected contacts back from the IPad to the mac, rather than rebuilding again?
Thank everyone so much for your help and your patience.
A little more, and I won't need an Apple genius for setup.:)

Thanks

considering iphone

2010-12-27 Thread Greg Aikens
Hi all,
I'm looking at getting a new phone because my current one is dying. I love my
ipod touch and think that an iphone would be great, but I'm a stingy student
and need to be able to justify the $200 for the phone and the additional $15 a
month on the phone bill. If there are ways that having an iphone could
significantly increase independence or help with personal organization etc. I
would feel that the cost was justifiable.

Most of the articles I have found about the iphone for blind and visually
impaired users offer vague assertions that the iphone increases the
independence of blind people but not a lot of specific info. My guess would be
that apps like digit-eyes, saytext, and gps apps could be extremely helpful and
would be worth the investment if they worked well. I have read mixed reviews
on digit-eyes and saytext though. How viable are these apps? Are there other
apps that might make my life easier as a totally blind person?

I would appreciate any thoughts or resources that might help answer these
questions.

Have a great day,
Greg

Re: considering iphone

2010-12-27 Thread Scott Granados
So, having a truly accessible phone definitely can't hurt in terms of
independence. You'll have access to the apps and most services that your sited
counter parts use so interoperability with their devices will only make your
life easier.

GPS is another tool that you'll find valuable. Over all though, just being
able to participate fully in the mobile landscape is a real plus if you make
the leap.

Hope that helps

Re: saving VO settings

I think I know the answer to this mystery. root account voiceover
settings override user account voiceover settings. Probably to date, no
changes were ever made to the root account voiceover settings, so on
reboot voiceover settings revert back to those in the root account. On

RE: off topic kindle question

2010-12-27 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi there,

I have been using the kindle for a few months. I needed someone to turn on
the voice guide initally but hav enot required any sighted assistance since
that time.. When purchasing a book make sure it is a book that says text to
speech enabled. I have over one hundred books on my kindle and have only
come across a small handful that were not text to speech enabled.

There are a number of books that are available for free and llways
promotions of books that are free for limited times.

The kindle also allows you to download any sample of any book for free. So
in essence, you can read the chapter to see if you are interested in the
book before you purchase.

I find it easiest to order from the computer rather than using the kindle
itself.

You can turn your wifi off to save power.

The text to speech has two settings for a normal speech rate and a faster
speech rate. I prefer a faster reading speed.

I have also linked my kindle to my audible account so I can read audio books
on the kindle.

I really like being able to buy the latest books of interest rather than
waiting for years for our CNIB library to send it out in audio. Here in
Canada we don't have access to bookshare, NLS or the range of RFB and D so
the books selection might not be as intriguing for those in the USA.

Enjoy the kindle.
Sharon

Hello list; I just got the surprise of my life. my family went and
bought be the latest version of the kindle. I've been doing some
reading, and I'm starting to get encouraged. It has a query keyboard
and the website says it has text to speech and spoken navigation. You
have to get a sighted person to turn it on, but it says it has it. I
have it charging right now and am looking forward to trying it. I
hope it does work as it has a browser in addition to the kindle

Re: considering iphone

2010-12-27 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi Greg:
Well, I think you would probably really enjoy the iPhone immensely. I have
just given mine up because of my hearing issues, and I miss it terribly. I'm
transitioning to the iPad, but my whole life seems to have become so
intricately tied into that iPhone in terms of keeping track of people, things,
emails, even my prescriptions that a day doesn't go by when I don't lament
having to give it up.

Probably the most difficult thing for me was doing things with phone calls,
because of the amount of dexterity required. Combine a tendency to screw
things up when trying to hurry with a severe hearing loss, and you have a
little idea what was a struggle for me.
My best advice: Go into an Apple or at&t store. Get someone to set up
Voiceover, and link up with someone you can call and talk with. The sister
group to this one viph...@googlegroups.com is an excellent resource.
A lot of people make good use of things like voice command to get the phone to
call contacts, and also some use bluetooth headsets for more private operation
of the device.
Good luck.

solve my safari instability problem

2010-12-27 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
Hi list; for the last few days my computer has been acting very weird
opening webpage links that i didn't click having the cursor bounce
around while entering text. I thought it was the most recent software
updates, but there really wasn't anything in there to cause the
problems i was having. when speaking to my brother this morning he
diagnosed my problem. it was a bad keyboard. We verified this by
hooking up an external keyboard to it. he says it might be cured by a
good cleaning, so I was wondering how you would do that. he told me
he'd use a vacume with the small brush attachment. he says if that
doesn't fix it, then he'll replace the keyboard for me. well, its so
nice to have a cooperative macbook again. take care, max

RE: locking the iPhone screen in horizontal layout?

2010-12-27 Thread Robert Hooper
Just for future reference (and to avoid possible confusion), the layout in
which you are locking the phone is "portrait"--that is, with the phone
vertically positioned. The closest equivalent to the aforementioned
"horizontal" layout would be landscape, which is active when the phone is being
used on its side (with the home button to the left or right as opposed to the
bottom center).

Re: Keyboard commander helps

Hello Colin and everyone,

Keyboard Commander only offers VO commands and not standard Mac shortcuts.

There is a shortcut to go straight to documents it's Command-Shift-O.

Standard shortcuts can be found beside their menu item.

Have you somehow uninstalled Click to Flash?

Playlists questions

2010-12-27 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
All:
I was able to create a playlist on my Nano, while the device was connected to
my Mac; however I have some questions.
1. How can I manually sync the playlist to my main iTunes library? My iPod is
set to manually sync content. Where do I paste the playlist to?
2. How can I rearrange songs in my playlists?
3. If I delete the playlists, or the songs from with in the playlists, will the
songs be removed from the albums on the iPod, or iTunes library?

Re: locking the iPhone screen in horizontal layout?

2010-12-27 Thread Donna Goodin
Sorry, my error. I was in a hurry, and meant portrait but somehow typed
horizontal.

Re: Pairing a Phonak Icom hearing device with a Macbook Pro via Bluetooth?

2010-12-27 Thread Nicholas Abrahamson
Hey Mark,

Ok, hopefully I can describe this well enough, but please feel free to Email me
back with any questions. The bluetooth pairing button is separate from the
reset button, and if you've someone sighted helping, it's right next to a
bluetooth symbol my girlfriend says is microscopic, but there if you squint...
smiley, If you're doing it with out sighted help, hold the Icom with the
induction loop facing away from you, with the big flat button facing the floor.
Facing the ceiling, on the bottom right is a square metal plate, it'll have
your cereal number, a place to right your name, and below that, is your reset
button. This isn't the one we need to pair. If you find that reset button,
it's just above a screw hole, and run your finger to the left, you'll find a
line of the metal square I was talking about earlier, run your finger past
that, and you'll feel a small hole, this is the bluetooth button. It happens
to be the only button on the bottom left side of the Icom, when it's held in
this position. If you hold down this button for 1 minute, it will put the Icom
in pairing mode. If you're using someone sighted at this point, they will see
the bluetooth indicator flashing blue. This will stay in pairing mode for a
few minutes. On the PDF of the manual, it's popping up on pages 26/27, just
encase you need to refer to it. The pass code is 4 zero's . Remember to first
put the mac in pairing mode, the hit the bluetooth button for the Icom. The
manual says that if you're asked which headset to choose, choose stereo, but it
works just the same for me if I choose mono. Hope this helps. If you
want/need, I can send you a PDF of the manual.

Peace,
Nick

Re: apple tv and choppy speech

2010-12-27 Thread Justin
I'm running my Apple TV through the optical audio out, and the speech
is definitely choppy for me as well. That is a real bummer, as the
audio from the tv is definitely a no go.
On a related note, has anyone using the new Apple TV noticed any
loss in audio quality when streaming from the Mac? I have both the
Airport Express and the new Apple TV, and the audio quality is
noticeably worse with the Apple TV. I'm wondering if I'm the only one
with this problem?

Re: apple tv and choppy speech

2010-12-27 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Justin,

I have not noticed any difference in the quality of the audio from Mac to apple
tv, as opposed to Mac to airport express. Admittedly, the speakers that are
attached to the receiver that has the a tv connection are not the most
wonderful speakers in the world, but they're decent. So I think a really
notable drop in audio quality would be noticed. That chopping speech problem is
still very much with me, though, and I don't guess there is a cure, short of
purchasing a different surround receiver, which is definitely out of the
question. I also found out that there are times when you must have the tv
turned on, or you can't play a stream from netflix. This happened the other
night when I was trying to stream a movie that my sighted husband wasn't
interested in, so I didn't have the tv on and kept getting an error message
about the requirement for a certain type of hdmi capability. I can't remember
the letters that followed hdmi. Turning on the tv solved the problem. The whole
thing seemed quite strange, since the netflix signal was coming from the net
and shouldn't have had anything to do with the presence or not of a tv.

Mary
