Hi,

Mark's Answer:

My answer is a simple one:
There are 2 things I strongly recommend to anyone regardless of his/her
computer usage history:
1. Remain open-minded about all that you encounter on the new operating system.

2. Do not consider abandoning your previous operating system for there will be
aspects of it that work more conveniently than on the new operating system.

In short, there is no reason why one should be either a Mac user or a Windows
or for that matter a Linux user. True power comes from diversity.

Do not limit your possibilities by switching from one to another but rather
expand your options by adding a new tool to your proverbial toolbox.

Good Luck,

Mark

RE: iPhone signal loss

2010-07-16 Thread Bryan Smart
Well, 4.01 came out, and I tried to install it. Half way through, iTunes gave
me error 3004 (what-ever that is), and stopped. Now, the iPhone won't talk,
won't reboot (black screen), and, when I attach it to the Mac, and iTunes
starts, iTunes says that it is unable to connect to the iPhone software update
server. I'm obviously online, since I'm sending this message from the same
computer where I was trying to update. Looked online, and some other people are
having this problem, too, with no solution. Been trying to re-update for about
3 hours now, but no luck. Doesn't look like there is any way to back out the
update, or reset the phone and restore from a backup, since I get this error
every time I attach the iPhone. Looks like my phone has been successfully
bricked.

Maybe Apple tech support will have a suggestion tomorrow, but, since it appears
that the phone isn't actually turning on anymore, I'm not sure what they'll
have me do. Take out the battery and put it back in? That will be a trick.

I'm out of town on business. It was a stupid stupid thing to do to let anything
of mine be updated while I'm out of town. I suspect I'll be wasting expensive
time tomorrow tracking down an Apple store, instead of working.

This sort of stuff is what we supposedly pay more to avoid with Apple products.
Extremely disappointed.

Bryan

The feedback from the software update will be interesting to say the least.
People will appear to be getting less signal all the time, regardless of if
they are left handed or not. The issue of signal los will still be present, but
since everyone will appear to be getting less signal all the time, it won't be
as noticeable.

Hi Sarai,

THe only way I know how to do it is to interact with the message headers field

Re: Voiceover training manuals

The reason the paid version of MS Word doesn't work with Voiceover is that
Microsoft didn't abide by accessibility guidelines when creating the
software. Shame on them.

Thanks for doing these manuals - what a great service! Will there be
a central location where users can find them?

I think a VO wiki is a great idea.

Also, is there any hope of developing a fix so that VO will someday
work with the paid version of MS Word? It's such a key program, so key
that there's a Mac version. Is VO access an issue to take up with
Apple or with Microsoft?

Agreed. I'd much rather see the law suit challenging the monopolistic
exclusivity deal between A T and T and Apple go forward rather then this silly
law suit. As you said, you have 30 days to return the iPhone if you're not
happy with it. On the other hand, the fact that Apple and ATT will not unlock

Looks like my phone has been successfully
bricked.

Maybe Apple tech support will have a suggestion tomorrow, but, since it
appears that the phone isn't actually turning on anymore, I'm not sure what
they'll have me do. Take out the battery and put it back in? That will be a
trick.

I'm out of town on business. It was a stupid stupid thing to do to let
anything of mine be updated while I'm out of town. I suspect I'll be wasting
expensive time tomorrow tracking down an Apple store, instead of working.

This sort of stuff is what we supposedly pay more to avoid with Apple
products. Extremely disappointed.

People will appear to be getting less signal all the time, regardless of if

since everyone will appear to be getting less signal all the time, it won't be

Hmm. I just updated mine to 4.0.1 with no problems. The updater mainly
said it was to address the incorrect signal bars calculation. I was
hoping to have it fix a couple bugs. In particular:

1. If I'm sending and SMS message or a new email, I get stuck in the To:
field. I start by making a new SMS message, I go to the To: field, type
a few characters and pick from the autocomplete list. I flick to the
message text field, and then decide to change the To: field. I go back
there and double tap and then realize I didn't want that. So I try to
flick back to the message field. It says 'text field message is editing
character mode' but I'm actually still in the To field. I can't input a
message no matter how much double-tapping I do. The only way out is to
delete a couple times to get rid of the current to: entry and do it
again. After that I can flick to the message fields and enter/edit text.

2. In the contact list, when I add another phone number I can't change
the type. Without voiceover running the user just taps "mobile" or
"iphone" or whatever the current label is and they get a picklist of
options such as "home" or "work" but with voiceover I can only edit the
phone number.

Neither of these are fixed in 4.0.1 and, yes, they have been sent to
accessibil...@apple.com.

Well, 4.01 came out, and I tried to install it. Half way through, iTunes gave

starts, iTunes says that it is unable to connect to the iPhone software update

The feedback from the software update will be interesting to say the least.
People will appear to be getting less signal all the time, regardless of if

since everyone will appear to be getting less signal all the time, it won't be

I couldn't find a simple single step way to do it. Had to download the
video first, which is just mpeg4. Then loaded it into Quicktime 7 (which
has a lot more Save As options) and saved it as Audio AIFF. That gave me
a standalone sound file which I could load up into itunes to make into

Re: youtube to mp3 converter

2010-07-16 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

Well, there is something called Tooble which will allow you to download YouTube
videos. Unfortunately, when you preview the application seems prone to crashing
quite frequently, and the developer is not responding or fixing this issue even
though it is being continuously updated. Also, the button called "Audio only"
does not only make it into audio, but still downloads the video as well as
makes an audio file. THis applies to either button, whether it is "Download" or
"Audio only". Unfortunately, for some weird reason, it uses .wav format but, if
you can deal with that, you can just convert.

To download, however, you will need to purchase Tooble Pro which is $5 I
believe. That is the only one I was able to find, and I'm actually pretty happy
with it as it allows you to download videos, search, and brows your
subscriptions on your YouTube account. Despite its shortcomings, it works
nicely when it wants to.

Re: youtube to mp3 converter

2010-07-16 Thread Chris Blouch
If you have the video loaded on the youtube page in Safari, open up the
activity monitor with option-apple-a. That is the list of all the pieces
that make up the page in a table. If you hunt through there there should
be one very large item (size is the second column) which is the video
file itself. For example, here is one:

http://v17.lscache8.c.youtube.com/videoplayback?ip=0.0.0.0&sparams=id%2Cexpire%2Cip%2Cipbits%2Citag%2Calgorithm%2Cburst%2Cfactor%2Coc%3AU0dWTlNNVl9FSkNNNl9LR1pF&fexp=907027&algorithm=throttle-factor&itag=35&ipbits=0&burst=40&sver=3&expire=1279328400&key=yt1&signature=C635179F80C22DA2B15C5E1E3C46184E36A5DAFE.B1C972DD07DA59410E03086FE7CD1CB30C5C3392&factor=1.25&id=964e7f392b1ac33e

It was 21.8MB while everything else was 100KB or less. Copy that URL, go
to the download manager, command-option-l, then paste the URL. It should
now download the video file to your desktop.

I noticed that not all video files are mp4, but most seems to be. While
I was hunting around I also found this site which seems to do all this
and make an mp3 file much easier:

http://www.gazzump.com/

You paste in the youtube url, such as this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5_OSsawz4

and click the download button. On the next page find the Choose a Format
popup and select MP3 then VO right to the Convert button. After that you
have to wait while they download and convert the file. After that you
should find a "Click here to download YouTube- 'Star Wars (John Williams
Is The Man)' medley - Corey Vidal and Moosebutter - a cappella tribute"
or whatever video you did link. Clicking that should drop an mp3 on your
desktop.

Re: youtube to mp3 converter

2010-07-16 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

That activity Monitor is an interesting approach. I'll have to see if it's
actually possible for Danish keyboards to do the Apple and the A
simultaneously, as we sometimes have issues with this.

It's also under the Window pull-down menu so you don't have to do it via
shortcuts.

It was 21.8MB while everything else was 100KB or less. Copy that URL,
go to the download manager, command-option-l, then paste the URL. It
should now download the video file to your desktop.

I noticed that not all video files are mp4, but most seems to be.
While I was hunting around I also found this site which seems to do
all this and make an mp3 file much easier:

http://www.gazzump.com/

You paste in the youtube url, such as this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5_OSsawz4

and click the download button. On the next page find the Choose a
Format popup and select MP3 then VO right to the Convert button.
After that you have to wait while they download and convert the file.
After that you should find a "Click here to download YouTube- 'Star
Wars (John Williams Is The Man)' medley - Corey Vidal and Moosebutter
- a cappella tribute" or whatever video you did link. Clicking that
should drop an mp3 on your desktop.

That URL could be different based on where you are. They have a content
distribution network so if you were in Toronto you would hit a server up
there rather than hauling data from SanFranciso. The main thing is to
look for a row which has a very large size. That should be the video
content.

That's a good step forward. At least you have the file now, even if it

It was 21.8MB while everything else was 100KB or less. Copy that URL, go to the
download manager, command-option-l, then paste the URL. It should now download
the video file to your desktop.

I noticed that not all video files are mp4, but most seems to be. While I was
hunting around I also found this site which seems to do all this and make an
mp3 file much easier:

http://www.gazzump.com/

You paste in the youtube url, such as this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5_OSsawz4

and click the download button. On the next page find the Choose a Format popup and select
MP3 then VO right to the Convert button. After that you have to wait while they download
and convert the file. After that you should find a "Click here to download YouTube-
'Star Wars (John Williams Is The Man)' medley - Corey Vidal and Moosebutter - a cappella
tribute" or whatever video you did link. Clicking that should drop an mp3 on your
desktop.

Re: Using a Mac Mini without a monitor

2010-07-16 Thread Chris Blouch
I had written up a lot of detail on this some time back which you can
find in the mail archives. Short version is that in the most recent
minis they now bog down unless a monitor is detected. The cheap fix used
to be to get a mini to NTSC/PAL adaptor which made the mini think it was
hooked up to something, but the analog stuff has been dropped from the
modern minis. I was able to work around this by getting a DVI->VGA
adapter and a VGA->NTSC adapter. Worked out well since we did want it
hooked up to the TV anyway so the kids can get their Elmo fix. The
detect is actually done by sending signals down certain pins and getting
something back on other pins. With nothing hooked up this detection
fails and weird stuff starts happening. A cheap used VGA display is
probably the cheapest solution. They used to sell VGA terminators but
every place I found on the web had them discontinued. There are
tutorials out there on how to make your own if you know somebody who is
good with a soldering iron. I think these might be the right things for
$33, which is really steep for what should be a $5 plug.

Please, spare us this!

While I think it would be nice if the mini worked without a monitor, please,
don't give us this stuff about being forced to buy something you don't need.
Personally, I have a vary old monitor which I keep around just in case I get
in to trouble where sighted assistance is necessary. I am sure that most of
us who came from windows know that does happen from time to time to even the
best of us. So, even though I have never yet had a problem on the mac where
sighted assistance was definitely necessary, I have learned that having a
vary inexpensive monitor around is a good idea regardless.

You can buy a used 1 for $50 or less, especially an old 15 inch LCD or
something like that.

On my mini, I have found that any old monitor would solve the problem and
didn't even have to be turned on. So, I hope we don't go off on the whole
needing a monitor thing, because, it's really trivial!

 Hi,

Well, there is something called Tooble which will allow you to download
YouTube videos. Unfortunately, when you preview the application seems
prone to crashing quite frequently, and the developer is not responding or
fixing this issue even though it is being continuously updated. Also, the
button called "Audio only" does not only make it into audio, but still
downloads the video as well as makes an audio file. THis applies to either
button, whether it is "Download" or "Audio only". Unfortunately, for some
weird reason, it uses .wav format but, if you can deal with that, you can
 just convert.

To download, however, you will need to purchase Tooble Pro which is $5 I
believe. That is the only one I was able to find, and I'm actually pretty
happy with it as it allows you to download videos, search, and brows your
subscriptions on your YouTube account. Despite its shortcomings, it works
 nicely when it wants to.

Hi,

As for the first bug, their is no need to go through that deleting process to
move the cursor to the message field. Just do a pass through gesture in the
message edit field. This is done with a double tap and hold. Similar to the
gesture when wanting to delete an app.

Re: converting mp4 to mp3

2010-07-16 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Chad,

THe only way I know how to do this is through Amadeus. DOesn't Switch or
Handbreak convert to mp3 also? I don't use Switch anymore, but I believe it
does the trick. It's either Switch or Handbreak that will convert it from mp4
to mp3. I hope that helps.

Allison

Experiences with iBank?

2010-07-16 Thread Alfred Puzzuoli
Hi,
Just wondering whether anyone has had experience with iBank Financial
Management Software? The initial setup process seems relatively accessible, but
my bank isn't supported for Direct download, so I haven't gotten very far in
terms of configuration as of yet.

Thanks for any info,

Backing up Boot Camp with Time Machine

2010-07-16 Thread Justin Kauflin
Hey, while changing the disc I use with Time Machine, I noticed that I
could add my Boot Camp partition to the list of partitions to back
up. Has anybody done this, and would this actually make it possible
to restore the Boot Camp if I needed to?
Just wondering. Thanks for any feedback.
Justin
