In this case, manually removing ngerman (or, if the references are part of
the document, not included via BibTeX, changing the language to English) may
be a last resort.

Generally, I would install and use the language package(s) even for just
one German or French reference title. This ensures proper hyphenation in a
more fail-proof way.

I'd recommend to install languages selectively. Especially if
texlive-lang-all is not in the current Debian distro, rather don't use it.

The order/timing of installation of texlive-lang-* vs. lyx does not
matter. The important point is, that you need to select the required
language packages manually, because the lyx package does no longer
(indirectly) depend on (or recommend) all languages.

It looks like the OP is using Debian/unstable or Debian/testing. This is
"work in progress" and there was a re-structuring of the language support
packages. So I would consider the problem one of the "rough edges" of the
unstable branch, not a Debian bug.

This problem sounds familiar.
It could have to do with default settings (I am assuming that your default
language for LyX documents is “ngerman”) or copying text from an other LyX
document.

I also assume that your English only chapter is a file by itself.

What I suggest is to check the Document → Settings → Language → Language
option to say “English (USA)”. Next select all the text in the file and
open the Text Style dialogue (Edit → Text Style → Customized...) and use
the Language option “Reset” (make sure all other options are set to “No
change”) to “reset” the text language to the language set in the document
settings.
You have to do this also inside of every inset—resetting the language for
all text does not work for the content of an inset, even if it is
selected. If there are multiple levels of insets you have to reset the
language on every level i.e. select all the inset content and reset the
language then go to the next inset level and do it again.
Please also keep in mind that LyX preserves language settings of
copy-pasted text i.e. LyX does NOT apply the destination document language
to pasted text if the source document is also a LyX document.
One final note: I made those experiences on a Windows system and I prefer
“vanilla” TeX Live every time - it causes less problems.

Hi!

It looks like the OP is using Debian/unstable or Debian/testing. This is
"work in progress" and there was a re-structuring of the language support
packages. So I would consider the problem one of the "rough edges" of the
unstable branch, not a Debian bug.

The original poster is running a Debian stable/unstable-mix. I guess that
is the reason for some of the problems.

Wolfgang, is there any reason why you don't want to run pure
Debian/testing or unstable installation?

Debian/stable is intended for systems like servers (or the laptops on the
ISS) where absolute stability is crucial. If one wants/has to use
up-to-date software on Debian/stable, the installation process is very
prone to errors.

This is the reason I switched from Ubuntu to Debian testing. Ubuntu is
based on a more or less dated snapshot of Debian/testing. I spent a week
trying to install a piece of new software which had a very old version in
the Ubuntu repositories.
In the end it was a choice between gnawing of one of my feet in
frustration or trying to install Debian/testing. I never had to regret
that. Debian/unstable is still incredibly stable, and Debian/testing is
even more so.
You seem to be tech-savy, able to read and follow instructions and not
afraid to ask questions. This more than qualifies you to run it.
Additionally, Debian/testing would lead to much less problems.

If I select this for installation, synaptic is going to remove a lot of
texlive and other stuff, which I hesitate to do.

To the actual problem:
My guess is a version mixup between the Stable/unstable packages.

You can try this: sudo apt-get -t unstable install texlive-lang-all ,
telling your Debian it shall install the newer packages specifically.
There has to be a way to do that in synaptic directly, but I don't know
it. Also, you can install the needed language packs specifically,
texlife-lang-all is 850 Mb large.

The texlive you've installed is the newer version, a dependency of Lyx
2.0.6. Texlive 2012 and 2013 are mutually exclusive packages.

For my own problem:

In this case, manually removing ngerman (or, if the references are part
of
the document, not included via BibTeX, changing the language to English)
may

be a last resort.

The text in question is written in English, and I'm not aware of any
German reference in it. I've sent the text to a friend to read it, and she
opened it in a German LyX-installation. Maybe the line was added at this
point, I haven`t exported this particular file to PDF in a while.

I found the cause of the error I was reporting (ngerman)

checking the latex output gave me two places were ngerman is mentioned. In
both cases I had used an index which (in lyx) was underlined blue and the
tex text showed:

...
chronopharmacological\index{chronopharmacology@\selectlanguage{ngerman}%
chronopharmacology\selectlanguage{american}%
} aspects by ...

selecting the index content chronopharmacology and doing in
bearbeiten>textstyle>language>reset
(which makes the blue underline to disappear)
allowed me get the normal pdf output.

I just want to point this out, since other lyx users might have similar
issues.

Thanks for all the help.

Which additional package are recommended on Mac?

Hi

I just upgraded to Maverick and deleted my homebrew directory
installation, so I had to install all tools again.

Now I realized, that there is no real list of recommended packages /
programs available on the LyX site, i.e. I am particularly struggling
ewith the image conversion ones. I now installed

imagemagick

and I could not convert pdf to png.
I then installed ghostscript and reconfigured, and now it is working.

I think a list of additional programs on each platform to do certain
common tasks would be a very useful addition to the wiki - and
possibly even put it into the help file, as under Linux (Ubuntu) these
packages are in the "recommended" section of the package.

One could even add a message to the reconfigure dialog, stating that
the following suggested packages are missing, and that they are needed
for the following tasks.

Thanks,

Rainer

Thanks, Hugo, for your advice and the specific ngerman question remedy.
I posted my findings before reading your mail. Your suggestion is more

This is not related to the class. In recent versions of babel (the
multilingual package), the individual language support files have been
split from the core package (which is a good move from a babel maintenance
point of view). For some strange reason, however, these language packages
are not installed by default by some distros.

I suppose you need to check whether you have the necessary
texlive-lang- packages installed.

The LaTeX class? No, LyX does not ship LaTeX classes in general, it only
ships the LyX layout files (modulo some very rare exceptions such as
broadway and hollywood, which should rather be submitted to CTANm though).

This is about internal labels and references, as for theorem
numbers and section numbers, not about the references at
the end of a paper.

These numbers should appear in an exported pdf, but
at times the pdf will have only ?? instead of the
numbers, at more than a hundred places. The labels
appear, but not the references. Thus, the exported
pdf is useless.

Can you send (to the list) a minimal working example?

Program restart does not help. Computer restart does
not help. The only solution I have found is a complete
reinstall of the program, including MikTek. And even
then, it is necessary to go back to a previous saved
draft, and re-enter many updates. Sometimes
a day's work. Sometimes a crucial line is lost.

Doesn't this suggest that the problem is with MikTeX? Why do you think
it is a LyX issue? I really have no idea and it could still be a LyX
issue (maybe LyX triggers something when a new MikTeX installation is
found), but I'm curious on your thoughts.

Try this:

In preamble:

\pgfdeclareimage[width=5em]{addon}{/Users/uwe/ownCloud/Vorlesung_2013_2014/0_Vorlesung_fundamente/Bilder/Addon}

And then in the frametitle, where you want to have the image:
