Re: Build breaks in Curl

2013-08-06 Thread Oliver-Rainer Wittmann

Hi,

it seems that my changes for the 'patch' tool causes this build breaker.
I will have a look.

Regina: Could please run 'patch -version' and tell me which version of
'patch' is active in your environment? Thx in advance.

Best regards, Oliver.

ERROR when build AOO

2013-08-06 Thread 張仁瀚
Hello everyone,

My name is Yohey, and I come from Taiwan.I am a "freshman" in AOO.
I use Ubuntu Linux as my environment, which version is 12.04. I follow
the following web to build AOO:
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO/Step_by_step

I followed the two steps under SVN and then jumped to "Install
requirements" to
do the steps under it. But when I got to the step "Build", I had some error.
Here is my error log:

yohey@yohey-VirtualBox:~/Openoffice/aoo-trunk/main/instsetoo_native$ build
--all
...
...
...(Building log)
...

=
Building module epm
=

Entering /home/yohey/Openoffice/aoo-trunk/main/epm

1 module(s):
epm
need(s) to be rebuilt

Reason(s):

ERROR: error 65280 occurred while making
/home/yohey/Openoffice/aoo-trunk/main/epm

When you have fixed the errors in that module you can resume the build by
running:

build --all:epm

yohey@yohey-VirtualBox:~/Openoffice/aoo-trunk/main/instsetoo_native$

-end--

I have tried it for a long time but I can't fix it up to now.

Thanks you for reading my question.
Thanks!

Regards,
 Yohey.

LibO code will be integrated to AOO?

2013-08-06 Thread FR web forum
Hello dev,

Some enhancements exists in LibO and published under MPL v2
Example:
RTF import filter https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58819 [1]
Calc polynomial curve https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35712#c10 [2]
Do you think it is possible to integrate this into AOO next release?

libs for example and can link against it. But we can't use patches on
Apache licensed code that are under MPL only. We can only accept ALv2
patches on this code. Please correct me if I am wrong. This is the crux
with this license conglomerate that makes no sense at all. And I believe
many people don't get the details what it really means.

I personally still believe that the way how LO handle this is wrong but
I am no lawyer. I am happy that I work on a clean code base without this
problems. Makes my life much easier ;-)

That is my understanding as well. But remember, LO is not licensing
these patches at all. The developers who write the code are providing
the license. This is a subtle difference, but it means the developers
are free to license the patch under ALv2 as well. So if there is
something we really would like to integrate we can approach the
developer and ask if they would be willing to license the patch under
ALv2. I believe that some of the independent LO developers are also
frustrated with the LO hoarding that is going on.

This makes sense only if we wish to structure this area with the classic
"trunk/branches/tags" schema. Since I don't expect we will store code or
test versions under "branding/", I think we can start with no structure.
If really needed (but I don't see any possible reasons now, since that

MPL has a very weak copyleft, but it has one. So you can't mix it with
code, which is licened unter a non-copyleft licence like the AL.

The LibreOffice developers don't want to have a management of copyrights
by their foundation. So you have to talk to each developer, whether he
or she is willing to licence his or her code under the ALv2 too.

Good luck!

So long as it is very clear what the new release contains, does it
matter how frequent they are?
A business will update to the next release if it contains fixes for

I will try.
These 10 debugging flags already exist when I joined the OpenOffice

These flags were used for debugging purposes. Search for 'bTest[1..10]'

For example, by bTest5 - No idle format - it can be controlled, if the

These debugging flags were from ancient time. Thus, may be the one or

I think it is more "tact" than "luck". But we have had some success
in making such requests in the past, generally quiet requests directly
to the developer. Most open source developers write code because they
want it to be used and for people to benefit from it. So if you give
them an opportunity for their code to be even more widely used, this
aligns with their goals as well. But such requests must be made
quietly, via private email, since there is a lot of peer pressure to
be uncooperative with Apache.

2013-08-06 Thread Andrea Pescetti

Rob Weir wrote:

a 4.0.1 release in the next few weeks to address the specific
high-urgency issues? [...]

Good plan. I'm adding some remarks below, to see the release not only
from the users point of view, but from the community perspective too.

3) Use the "release blocker" flag to propose defects for inclusion in
the 4.0.1 release.

OK, but by default the "proposed 4.0.1 release blocker" flag (when it
exists) should be set for:

1) All the issues with keyword "regression" found after 4.0 was released
2) All the issues nominated as release blockers for 4.0 and unresolved.

It is important that we don't fall in the "release and forget" trap,
i.e., "this bug was already known when 4.0 was released, so it doesn't
need to be evaluated again for 4.0.1". At least, we should re-evaluate
the old proposed blockers: some of them might have become more relevant.

4) New translations are rolled in, since a new translation cannot
break core code. [...]

Here (and, by the way, the infamous problem for Italian was a broken
translation of style names a few years ago; indeed, this kind of
problems does not affect other translations) it is really important that
we are able to clearly communicate to volunteers that they can target 4.0.1.

This is not the case at the moment: we have volunteers who are ready to
work and Pootle is not ready yet for their language, or it only offers
3.4.1. See http://markmail.org/message/4oxacrviktdbmbcv for more.

The opportunity is now and we should definitely make it a priority for
4.0.1, so we can tell volunteers that 4.0.1 can be released in their
language and that they can start contributing immediately. This has the
potential to motivate contributors.

5) The one "feature" that I'd consider rolling in would be changes to
work with Mac OS 10.9. It is not a regression in our code per se, but
it is a new issue, and a critical one. [...]

A minor and low-risk "feature" is updating bundled dictionaries. As I
explained in a mail to this list, the update behavior is not optimal
from a usability point of view so it's best to update dictionaries just
before the new release. Needless to say, I'd volunteer for that.

in theory and with an idealistic view I would agree but for practical
reason I don't. You should not forget that issues have to be fixed as well.

We should really be careful here and should focus on the most serious
issues only. From my point of view many proposed showstoppers for 4.0
were no showstopper and why should we prioritize them now.

And even regressions have to be analyzed where the root cause comes from.

mmh, I don't like this under the hood tactic, I would prefer a public
blog post to invite developers to provide their patches under ALv2 to
make them available to all users of any OpoenOffice derivative.

Why not asking directly? I personally don't care about people shooting

understanding of open source.

Really open minded people will see the benefit of contributing to the

Code belongs to the person who wrote it. So sending them a note is
the most direct way to request it under another license. The
license(s) that a developer puts the code under is a person choice,
not a community one.

You can try. But I think you would be more success approaching the
developer privately compared to publicly putting them on the stop in
front of their peers with a public request.

And this is true if you approach the developer privately as well.

In any case, I'm just describing the approach that I've seen work

So maybe mark things in BZ as regressions, etc. But only set the
Release Blocker Request flag when a fix is actually available? That
might make the most sense for a workflow. We can then continue to
use BZ severity field and regression keyword to categorize the issues
that don't have fixes yet.

An under the hood tactic wouldn't work, because the AOO sources are
open, so everybody can see contributions coming from "LibreOffice
developers". You can't keep the contributions secret.

So IMO ask them in an open way - hoping to find open minded people.

Actually, it does work. It has happened on several occasions, even
with AOO 4.0.

I think you are mixing up two things: asking privately and
contributing publicly. These are not contradictory.

In any case, I'd challenge anyone to point to an example where the
contrary approach worked: asking publicly on the LO mailing list.

Or maybe the point you are missing is the distinction between a
"quiet" approach and a "secret" approach. These are not the same
thing. I'm not proposing secrecy. But one can be transparent
without drawing unwanted attention to a request.

Or is there another page that is more central to people working on
dictionary development? I don't think our old wiki page is the place most

[IDEA] "Back to School with AOO" blog post

2013-08-06 Thread Rob Weir
It is that time of year now: back to school.

I wonder if this could make a good blog post. Of course, AOO being
free is core part of the story. But even better would be if we had a
"top 10" list of ways in which AOO is great for school.

Maybe specific templates or extensions that are especially useful for school?

Good for students as well as for teachers?

Any special tips or techniques about using AOO for school work?

If we can come up with 10 nice ideas, I can write it up in a blog post.

Pleas share any ideas you might have.

We need to differentiate here, Pootle is just one tool of many. When you
start on a major editing process like a new language, it not fast and
convinient enough, you can edit a lot faster offline, and then upload the
results.

It is another matter if the PO files are not ready, that would prohibit
work. However we have a high volume of langauges that are both available
as PO files and in Pootle, so I think this is a real showstopper, apart
from a single language (which problaly takes more than a couple of weeks to
translate)

I agree to this...lets get those languages that are nearly there completed,
and once we have volunteers working on that for 4.01, and those languages
who are no near complete or miss totally be planned for 4.1

One issue: https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122910

As for the volunteers, I understand that the Pootle update is a lot of
work, as I wrote. Fact is, this lot of work is instrumental in
attracting volunteers successfully and will remain the same amount of
work whether done now or after 4.0.1. And doing it now (or soon) is a
nice opportunity for the project for a combination of reasons:
OpenOffice 4.0 had great exposure, volunteers want to translate it into
their language, Summer is the best period for people to contribute in
their spare time, telling someone that his efforts will be turned into
an official release next month is very motivating... But indeed so far
you are the only one who actually did this Pootle administration work.

I can give a hand, with this work, but reading through the mails it seems
we have quite a few open issues (mainly raised by jsc):
- Should we make 4.01 in pootle or as suggested continue working on 4.0 ?
- Do we want to add languages where we have no translation teams ?
- How do we merge languages changed in pootle and sdf ?

@jsc, I have trunk on my linux, so I suggest the following procedure
(provided you agree):

1) I convert all sdf files to po files (to be sure lets agree offlist on
the actual cmds and parm to use)
2) upload the PO files to a temp dir on translate-vm2.a.o
3) sync db with po dir on translate-vm2.a.o
4) create project 4.01 with content of 4.0
5) compare if Pootle files contain newer info then sdf-PO files (this will

It might be worth having some sub-directories there, with no files in the root.

For example:

/branding/logo/contest --- have the final submission from ChrisR
there, including supporting files

/branding/logo/master -- have the final version of the logo here,
with a name like master-logo.svg. But no unnecessary other files.

/branding/logo/special -- this is where we can store the source
versions of special logos we do, like for International Mother
Language Day or Christmas

Are there other aspects of the brand that have artifacts that we need
to store? Maybe not now, but I could imagine having short video
titles that could indicate an official video on our official YouTube
channel, if we had one. Or an ODT document with our official letter
head. Things like this could fit into this directory structure as
well.

A chart showing the RGB values for the logo colors would be good to
have, as well as instructions for how to use/not use the logo. But
maybe that belongs on the wiki?

Finally, since this is a murky side of OpenOffice.org that has caused
confusion before, I wonder if we should have a /branding/records
directory where keep a simple text log of entities that have been
given permission to use the logo or related trademarks? Or is that
redundant with something Shane already does?

This makes sense only if we wish to structure this area with the classic
"trunk/branches/tags" schema. Since I don't expect we will store code or
test versions under "branding/", I think we can start with no structure.

If

Updated table: Downloads by Country

I just updated the page showing downloads by country. The last update
was back in May.

The ordering at the top has not changed much, except that Poland has
overtaken the Netherlands for the #10 spot.

Same number of countries listed as before. I think we have them all,

at 237.

Introduction & Query on getting started with accessibility coding work in Open Office

2013-08-06 Thread Glen & Nicci Johnson
Hi all,

I had a discussion recently with Steve Lee (of Open Directive), about
my desire to get involved in software development on the accessibility
side of notable open source projects. He suggested I maybe have a look
at the work that's going on in Apache Open Office regarding the
merging in of the IAccessible2 code from IBM's Lotus Symphony. I've
been using Open Office very happily for many years, so I thought it
sounded like a great idea.

- Is there any Java coding involved in this? I'm asking this as Java
is one of my main coding skills
- Would any of you perhaps be able to point me in the right direction
regarding this work?
- Is there any documentation on the WIKI (or elsewhere) outlining this
work and giving a background on the tasks that need to be done?
- Who do I speak to about the work going on in OO regarding
IAccessible2 and any other accessiblity work?

Thanks in advance

Since I'm new here, I thought I'd give a brief background on myself below:

Having worked as a Software Engineer in many different industries for
over 15 years, I'm interested in getting involved in accessibility and
assistive software development - preferably Open Source.

I am passionate about developing accessibility / assistive software
which empowers disabled people to overcome the barriers imposed by the
difficulties and impairments they experience. In so doing, I want to
help them lead fuller lives and have a chance to reach their full
potential.

I have a good general knowledge covering a number of disabilities -
specific learning disabilities, and vision impairments e.g. Visual
Stress / Irlen Syndrome

Please let me know how and where I can contribute to the development
of accessibility in Open Office. Thank you.

Kind regards

I've created some new scripting and the result can be seen here:

That's good to have the size in the main download box.
However, given that the size is approximate, I'm not sure it's

Once downloaded, the Windows XP property page shows:
129 MB (136,201,626 bytes)

OK, I've eliminated the decimal places.

Unhelpfully, the SF downloads page [1] shows 136.2MB - looks as though

Yes, thanks.

The problem with the file size should be a little thing.

The one with the truncated filenames seems more severe. To show the
complete file name via mouse over text is a good step forward. Let's see
what the issue reporter will say.

I've tried to realize that. But I think it's not possible as there is only
one link possible as the whole pper green box has to be clickable: for the

The most important part is the install file. Everything else is secondary.

Well we can adjust as we go along. RIght now, I am still trying to hunt
down actual old "svgs" that may rightfully belong in the new area. So far,
I am only finding saved resized svgs but not the originals for most
items. So, these are cases when sub-dividing into old vs new would be a
good idea.

The information on the wiki is here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+IAccessible2

If this is the first time working on an open source project you might
find some useful background information on the project here:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/

To contribute to the development side of the project a first step is
downloading the code and getting it to build. Most of the program is
C++, so you'll need to get a C++ Windows dev environment set up . Our
Building Guide is the starting point for that, but expect that you'll
get stuck and need to ask questions on the list a few times before you
successfully build. Consider it a way of meeting more people on the
project ;-)

The Building Guide is here:

Hi Yohey --

OK, I am looking at the build instruction page you used. If you are using
the Windows 7 instructions, the epm-url in the configure section was wrong
and needs to be the same url as for the Ubuntu instructions. So, I just
fixed this.

It seems that epm did not build and this is needed to do the actual build.

So, a few things that might help troubleshoot this problem:

-- if you could post more information here about your setup (OS, etc.)
and the configuration options you used, that would help a lot

-- you may want to take a look at the general AOO Build page if you haven't
already:
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO

In any case, we are here to help and welcome your development efforts. And,
of course, we very much welcome any comments you may have on the Building
Guides themselves.

epm location?

2013-08-06 Thread Kay Schenk
It seems we have two different urls in our Building Guides for epm.

The one listed on this page:
(1)
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO/Step_by_step

and the one listed on this page:
(2) http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO

Is there a preference so we can make the epm url the same for all our
building guides.

It is
patch 2.6.1

Thanks.
I also reproduced the build breaker in my environment having patch 2.6.1

my current solution to solve the build breaker:
- 'unix2dos main/curl/curl-7.19.7_win.patch'
- rebuild curl after removing main/curl/[platform]/

Yes, that works for me too. Building is now beyond curl.

Thx for the feedback.

I am now checking build on Linux (Ubuntu 11.10 32bit) and Windows (patch
version 2.7.1).

Re: [Build Environment] Windows - build using Java 7 (JDK 1.7) without having Visual Studio

2013-08-06 Thread Oliver-Rainer Wittmann

Hi,

On 01.08.2013 15:15, Oliver-Rainer Wittmann wrote:

Hi,

Our current documentation about building AOO on Windows [1] (legacy one
[2]) references JDK 1.6 and Visual Studio 2008 Express as needed
software tools in order to build AOO on Windows. You might know that
these are no longer officially available for Windows.
Thus, I decided to work on a Windows build environment _without_ Visual
Studio 2008 and _with_ JDK 1.7. I managed to build current trunk on a
Windows 7 64bit HomePremium system using Java 7 (JDK 1.7) and without an
installed Visual Studio instance.
The problems which I need to solve on my way to the installation set were:
(1) New version 2.7.1-1 of cygwin tool 'patch'.
Version 2.7.1-1 now takes line endings in the patch file and in the file
to be patch serious. Thus, the application of a patch fails when the
line endings are different.
Solution is to tweak the calling of the cygwin tool 'patch'.
(2) Building module accessibility.
In accessibility/bridge/source/java/ 'javah' is used to create a C
header file from a Java class. This does not work with JDK 1.7 as the
classpath does not contain the needed references to our UNO-API Java
classes.
Solution is to adjust the classpath for this 'javah' call.

There are issues 121690 [3] and 121754 [4] regarding building with Java
7 (JDK 1.7) and HSQLDB. I think these issues are the duplicates of each
other [please, can one of the people involved in these issues - e.g.
Fred, Ariel or Andrea confirm this? Thx in advance]. As far as I
understood these issues are solved. Please correct me, if I am wrong.
My build was not hit by any build problem regarding modules hsqldb and
connectivity.

The installation of my build successfully passes the so-called smoketest
- open document /main/smoketestdoc/[platform]/bin/smoketestdoc.sxw and
hit start button.

On a Windows system with JRE 6 the installation of my build does not
recognize installed JRE 6 as an Java runtime environment (Menu - Tools -
Option - Java). This is no problem from my point of view as our Windows
users should not have JRE 6 installed anymore on their systems due to
its security risks. Does somebody contradicts?

I will soon update our documentation [1] in order to enable newcomers to
build AOO under Windows.
I will also update the reference to the Windows SDK, because for
building without stlport on Windows the SP1 of the corresponding Windows
SDK is needed - see issue 122500 [5].

I have already updated our documentation regarding building AOO under
Windows - just forgot to mentioned it here.

Feedback regarding the documentation and its application in practice is
much appreciated - Thx in advance.

Best regards, Oliver.
