[Bug 250533] Re: Suspend stopped working on Dell Latitude C610 in recent Hardy update

2008-11-03 Thread Michael Losonsky
Intrepid had problems with network cards -- I had to
a mess with one computer and didn't want to
risk it. So Ignored this. And in any case, why
should I try it in Intrepid when I want it to work
in LTS. Suspend still doesn;t work, but I just
don't use it. You just learn to live with the
bugs.

In general, I am ignoring bugs and bug reports because
I haven't found the process very satisfactory. There
are certain applications that are persistently buggy and
the basic treatment of them is denial and workarounds.
Examples are dial-up, sound recorder, and suspend/hibernate

[Bug 250533] [NEW] Suspend stopped working on Dell Latitude C610 in recent Hardy update

2008-07-21 Thread Michael Losonsky
Public bug reported:

Suspend used to work in Hardy Heron but after a recent update (
and I cannot remember which one), it stopped working. It will
suspend, but it will not resume. Need to force shutdown and
reboot. Same problem using suspend button, suspend on
close lid, or from log off menu. Hibernate works, and if I set
power manager to hibernate on close lid, this resumes without
a problem.

[Bug 172599] Re: Evolution Will not send mail via Exchange 2007

2008-02-07 Thread Michael Losonsky
Do you receive mail? If not, then see bug Bug #25106 and references to other
bugs.
Just tried to set-up an Exchange 2007 account in Evolution 2.21.90
in Hardy Alpha 4 without success. This is a confirmed bug, but upstream.

I see you are using an SMTP server so I should assume that the account
is set-up with IMAP for receiving and SMTP for sending. In Feisty I can
send and receive to an Exchange 2007 account using IMAP and SMTP.

Question: While incoming mail uses encryption and password authentication, the
outgoing server does not require encryption and authentication and would not
work
if so configured. Try changing that.

[Bug 193334] Re: Hardy Alpha 5: "Minimize window" acts like "CLose window"

2008-02-19 Thread Michael Losonsky
Closing was no problem, but minimizing was and I was trying the panel as
well as ALT+F9 to see if there was a difference. BUT the solution is simple:
I needed to add Windows List to the Panel. I guess it was removed after the
most recent upgrade. I know I didn't remove it because as long as I
have been using ubuntu I minimized without closing and had no idea
of Windows List. I guess it was a default in Dapper, Feisty and Gutsy.
Maybe it should be a default setting? In any case, I am glad to know
the solution.

On a Dell C610 running Hardy Alpha5 the dimmer works on AC,
but not on battery. I assume that's how it's designed.

On AC it indicates that it dims from 100% to 0%, but this is
not quite right. The lowest setting (0%) does not blank the
screen, but puts it at where the screen is on battery power.

[Bug 194495] Re: package gnome-applets 2.21.4-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

2008-02-28 Thread Michael Losonsky
I had a similar problem after an Alpha 5 update yesterday. After
the update, I had an error message for gnome-applets keyboard.
The update had a problem with the keyboard indicator I use in
my panel. In addition to the error message, the update icon
mentioned that there were dependency problems. I fixed the
dependencies in synaptic, but I could not add the keyboard
indicator without error messages. Since the update also installed a new
kernel (24-10), I rebooted, same error message. I then thought
I should remove the old kernel (24-8 generic), but it removed
gnome and I had to reinstall everything.

[Bug 172622] Re: Invalid audio capture settings in gnome-sound-recorder

2008-03-19 Thread Michael Losonsky
My reasoning was that this wasn't a fix really but a coincidence that
it now worked for gary with an upgrade. The problem he mentioned
was that there is an unhelpful message to average users when there
is a problem with the gnome sound recorder, and from my experience,
there often are problems with it after updates, for example.

A frix would be a more helpful message, for example instructing
users to enter gstreamer-properties in the terminal and check
the settings. There is no way to enter those settings from System
Preferences or Administration, not in any obvious way I know. How
could an ordinary user know to do go to the terminal and enter
gstreamer-properties from the error message?

I happened to solve my problem by installing the pulse audio device
chooser applet and tinkering with that until I got the sound-recorder to work.
I don't mind wasting my time obsessing about this sort of
stuff, but an ordinary user will give up much sooner. So that's why I
thought marking this as "fix released" was inaccurate. Garygar got
his sound to work, but not on the basis of any correction to the
message that he got. There was no fix released for that!

So it is not a "similar issue," it is strictly speaking the very same
issue.

[Bug 228066] [NEW] Sound Recorder does not work

2008-05-07 Thread Michael Losonsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Release: Ubuntu 8.04
gnome-media: 2.22.0-0ubuntu3

No matter what I do (and I have tried everything I can think of, followed
all How To's I could get my hands on), but I cannot get the Sound
Recorder to work. Now there was a time it worked -- in Feisty, but
since Gutsy I cannot get it to work.

The microphone works. It works in Skype and if I go to the
PulseAudio Manager -> Devices and highlight this input
device:
ALSA PCM on hw:1 (USB Audio) via DMA
and click on the recording meter, the meter indicates the mic is
responding. But no matter what I do in the VOlume Control,
gstreamer-properties, System->Preferences->Sound,
Alsamixer, and more, I cannot get the SOund Recorder to
work.

WHat I expected is that I could open the SOund Recorder, record
and playback given the usual settings or making a few obvious
changes. That's how it was in Feisty.

[Bug 60394] Re: screensaver starts but shows only a black screen

2007-03-30 Thread Michael Losonsky
I have the same problem on two different computers
running Edgy. The screensavers play in preview, etc.
but after the appropriate idle time I just get a black
screen. This happens no matter what saver I choose.
However, occasionally, the screensaver does start, but
not usually and I have no idea why. Cannot detect a
pattern.

[Bug 22119] Re: [network-admin] Dial out does not work

2007-05-04 Thread Michael Losonsky
In the final Feisty release, the modem in Admin -> Networking now works enough
to let you configure the modem and dial out and connect. However the modem
now keeps disconnecting. This also happens with wvdial in Feisty (which was
not the case in 6.10 and 6.06). The disconnecting seems to be related to the
ppp daemon.

[Bug 88413] Evolution freezes after installing IMAP account

2007-02-27 Thread Michael Losonsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution (in 6.10) freezes after installing a large account IMAP.
Once it freezes, it has to be force quit. Rebooting
and reloading (as the same user) returns the frozen
screen. Reinstalling evolution still returns you to
the frozen screen. Only if you log on as another
user do you get a new set-up menu and you can
start over again, as long as you don't try to set-up
the same IMAP account.

[Bug 88413] Re: Evolution freezes after installing IMAP account

2007-02-28 Thread Michael Losonsky
This happens only with dial-up connections (56k). I
am assuming it freezes when it is downloading my
large IMAP files and inbox. However, neither
Netscape nor Mozilla have a problem with this when
using dial-up.

[Bug 88413] Re: Evolution freezes after installing IMAP account

2007-03-01 Thread Michael Losonsky
This has been resolved. I was impatient. On
dial-up, it takes a while to load IMAP accounts
first time, and the window freezes while the
account loads. It takes a minute or two to load,
the first time. Thereafter it is faster, but the
window still seems frozen and partial (just
frames visible) during this time and will frighten
the newcomer.

Perhaps a little warning that dial-ups need to be
patient when loading IMAP accounts the first time
would be helpful.

Re: [Bug 88413] Re: Evolution freezes after installing IMAP account

2007-03-09 Thread Michael Losonsky
Thank you! Merci! Danke schoen.

I found that it doesn't freeze if you
let it download everything and not
try to do anything else in evolution.
It always takes about 3 - 4 minutes
to load all IMAP files and folders on
dialup.

[Bug 22119] Re: [network-admin] Dial out does not work

2007-03-19 Thread Michael Losonsky
>Networking for dial-up needs fixing in Feisty

Yes this still is an issue in Feisty and it was an
issue in Edgy.  System->Administration->
Network still does not allow you to enable a
dial-up modem. Also, the problem with it
reverting to pulse after you set it to tone is
still an issue.

It is not a problem with the modem. Wvdial
recognizes the modem and you can dial out
with it. But the dial-up in Network should really
work!

[Bug 25106] Re: evolution-exchange: unable to setup exchange account

2007-03-19 Thread Michael Losonsky
Evolution-Exchange does not work with Microsoft
Exchange 2007. I had the same problem and it was
confirmed on the Evolution site and by one of our IT
folks who manages our Exchange 2007 server confirmed
this. He filed a bug report and apparently some folks
started working on this in the past few months.
I wish I had the links, but they are easy to find
with google.

[Bug 94301] Feisty 386 live cd does not boot on slower machine

2007-03-20 Thread Michael Losonsky
Public bug reported:

A live cd (build March 19) will not boot on a 733Hz machine but boots on
three other faster machines (1gHz and faster) with the same memory and
all are Dells. I was able to boot an earlier build (March 17) without
this problem on all four machines.

I have tried it 4 times now on the 733gHz machine and every time it boots very
slowly (over ten minutes) and then I get a window with the following message:
"There was an error starting GNOME Settings Daemon.

 The last error message was:
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application
did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply,
the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was..."

I connected with wvdial (since the dial-up modem in system tools does
not work) and tried to send a bug report, but this did not work. I also
tried to run /.xsessions-error in various directories without success.
