I had a similar problem after an Alpha 5 update yesterday. After the update, I had an error message for gnome-applets keyboard. The update had a problem with the keyboard indicator I use in my panel. In addition to the error message, the update icon mentioned that there were dependency problems. I fixed the dependencies in synaptic, but I could not add the keyboard indicator without error messages. Since the update also installed a new kernel (24-10), I rebooted, same error message. I then thought I should remove the old kernel (24-8 generic), but it removed gnome and I had to reinstall everything.
