Closing was no problem, but minimizing was and I was trying the panel as well as ALT+F9 to see if there was a difference. BUT the solution is simple: I needed to add Windows List to the Panel. I guess it was removed after the most recent upgrade. I know I didn't remove it because as long as I have been using ubuntu I minimized without closing and had no idea of Windows List. I guess it was a default in Dapper, Feisty and Gutsy. Maybe it should be a default setting? In any case, I am glad to know the solution.
